Excellence for mission - The South Asia Institute of Advanced Christian Studies (SAIACS) stands for exactly that. Excellence will mean hard work with personal integrity. You will deepen

your understanding and confidence in evangelical Biblical faith. You will enhance your skills in sharing in God’s mission. Upholding the uniqueness of Jesus and the authority of the Bible, we offer academic education that helps you balance scholarship and Christian spirituality.

At SAIACS we live to learn and learn to love - to love God with all our hearts, minds and strength, love our neighbours as ourselves, and care for our environment. We want a vibrant community with no discrimination in gender, social class, race, colour or culture. Students, faculty, staff and gardeners eat lunch together. Cell groups offer small group fellowship, prayer and recreation.

God provides SAIACS with well-qualified teachers and visiting faculty, some of whom are world renowned in their specialty. My vision is that SAIACS grows from good to great. SAIACS began with Missiology, and the mission of God remains our focus. Whether God is calling you to serve in college, church, mission or marketplace, SAIACS offers cutting-edge training to suit. Our MA degrees build in context-based learning to complement classroom studies. University recognition of your degree is yours if you want it. The real question, however, is “Do you want to prepare yourself to serve God?” If you do, make SAIACS your choice to study for God’s sake and his mission.

Aim high. Aim to serve. I hope you’ll pray about your decision. You’ll find God leading you.

Dr Ian PaynePrincipal

There is only one God, the Creator and Sustainer of all things, infinite in being, perfect in holiness and love. He

exists eternally in three Persons: The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, who are of one substance and equal in power and glory.

The sixty-six canonical books of the Old and the New Testaments are inspired by God, hence infallible and entirely trustworthy. They are the ultimate authority for faith and practice.

Human beings, created male and female in the image of God, through disobedience fell from a sinless state. This fall subjected humans to God’s wrath, and brought upon the human race the sentence of eternal death. The human race can be saved from this state only by the grace of God, through faith in the finished redemptive work of the Lord Jesus Christ, and by the agency of the Holy Spirit.

The eternally pre-existent Son became incarnate, without human father, by being conceived by the Holy Spirit and by being born of the virgin Mary. In Jesus of Nazareth divine and human natures were united in one Person, both natures being whole, perfect and distinct. He lived a sinless life in total obedience to the will of the Father, and died on the cross as the sinner’s substitute, ransom and sacrifice, shedding His blood for the remission of sin once and for all. On the third

Statement of Faith

day He rose from the dead in the body which had been laid in the tomb but which had been changed gloriously. He has ascended to the right hand of the Father, where He is our perpetual mediator and intercessor. He shall come again, personally, visibly, and in great glory as Lord and Judge to consummate the eternal plan of God. He will raise all humankind from death and judge them in righteousness. Those who are saved will enter eternal blessedness and those who are lost will experience “the second death.”

The Holy Spirit brings individuals to repent of their sins, to trust themselves to the Lord Jesus Christ, and to experience the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and assurance of salvation. By that indwelling the believer receives light and power to live a holy life to witness and work for the Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of the Church.

The Church is the company of all who have become children of God through faith in Christ and have been knit together by the Holy Spirit into one body of which the Lord Jesus is the head.

The Church is given the mandate by the Risen Lord Jesus Christ and is under obligation to demonstrate and proclaim the wholeness of the Gospel and its implications to the whole creation.

VISIONWith God’s help and our commitment to evangelical faith, our vision is to be a world-class post-graduate theological institution in South Asia, greatly serving the mission of the Church of Jesus Christ globally.

MISSIONSAIACS trains Christian leaders to demonstrate Christ-likeness and excellence in academics, ministry and missions, by offering biblical and contextually relevant postgraduate degree programmes in a caring and egalitarian community.

CORE VALUESWe encourage Christ-like service, faithful study of the Bible, excellence in reflective thinking, equal acceptance of all people, the ability to communicate contextually, accountability, respect for advanced theological education for the church, and care for the environment. We want our graduates to zealously bring the Gospel and make disciples for our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

LOGOSAIACS’ logo is an artist’s impression of the top of the institute building where the dome represents the world, surmounted by the Cross, pointing to the message of Christ for the world. Below the dome is the Chapel of the Fishers of Men, reminding us that prayer, the power of the Holy Spirit, and personal holiness are invariably required in ministers of the Gospel.

HISTORYSAIACS began with the conviction that the churches in India needed a reputable mission focused centre of higher theological learning to equip people to meet the challenges of the twenty-first Century.

In the summer of 1981 in Kodaikanal, Dr Bruce Nicholls and Dr Graham Houghton shared their dreams. Like-minded people in Chennai agreed on the need for an MTh in Missiology. Dr Graham Houghton, the Dean, set up the two-year course, and classes began in 1982 amid enthusiastic support from church leaders and prospective students. In 1984, the programme moved to Bangalore with Dr Graham Houghton as the Principal, based in several houses until a suitable land was located near Kothanur, on the northern side of Bangalore. The present SAIACS spreads over 10.5 acres of beautifully landscaped campus.

Following founding Principal Dr Graham Houghton’s 20 years, Dr Ashish Chrispal and Dr Fanai Hrangkhuma served consecutively as Principal. Dr Ian Payne took up his duties as Principal in March 2008.

RATIONALE FOR SAIACSThree concerns prompted the founding of SAIACS.

» Too often Indian students studying in Western countries do not return.

» Understandably, Western education is in some areas irrelevant to the Indian context, while SAIACS can address the issues of South Asia.

» Third, offering postgraduate education in India rather than the West is better financial stewardship (about one tenth the costs per student).

SAIACS is located 15 kilometres north of Bangalore city centre, and easily reached by road, rail or air. Known for its computer software industry, Bangalore is a metropolis of over 8 million people. At an altitude of 1000 metres (3000 ft) from sea level, the city enjoys a mild climate throughout the year.

SAIACS has modern buildings which are enduring and eye pleasing. The lawns and hundreds of trees provide park-like surroundings, giving a spirit of peace. Indeed the architecture won acclaim in the journal Architecture and Design (Sept/Oct 1996).

NEW DEVELOPMENTS

UNIVERSITY RECOGNITION OF MPHILFollowing on the heels of recognition from the University of Mysore for the SAIACS Master of Arts in Theology, MA (Th), we now have recognition for the MTh programme. Students can opt to do the same content but with the award of Master of Philosophy in Theology, MPhil (Th), from the University of Mysore. The MPhil (Th) is offered in all seven areas of specialization - Old Testament, New Testament, Theology and Ethics, Missiology, Pastoral Theology and Counselling, History of Christianity and Study of Religions. The MPhil (Th), we believe, is a great step forward in opening up the employment prospects of the graduates to include universities as well as theological institutions that particularly value university degrees.

DISTINCTIVES » SAIACS gives priority to the spiritual

nurture and development of the whole campus community.

» On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays we have chapel led by members of the faculty, senior administrative staff, and of the student body. Students attend classes in Spiritual Formation to enlarge their prayer life and examine their accountability to God and to others. They also form prayer partners or prayer triplets to encourage each other in their spiritual growth.

» We encourage students to contribute to the ministry of local churches.

» Students, staff and faculty pray in groups at given times and each year we set aside a Day of Prayer.

» Friday evenings offer a community dinner, recreation, fellowship and prayer in Cell Groups.

» Our MA studies increasingly focus on context-based learning, so students can see the relevance of biblical answers to classroom questions and sharpen their ministry skills in practice.

CREDENTIALS » The Asia Theological Association (ATA),

a member of the International Council of Accrediting Agencies of the World Evangelical Alliance, accredits all SAIACS degrees.

» In 1997, SAIACS was recognized by the University of Mysore, a premier state university, as a research centre for study

leading to the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree of the University of Mysore, Karnataka (No. CDC/F-153/96-97).

» On 8th June 2011 University of Mysore recognised SAIACS as centre for Specialised Studies to offer MA in Theology. The University of Mysore has indicated (No. PMEB/ 13 - South/ 2010 - 11/13) that the same Memorandum of Understanding meant for Masters in Theology will also hold good for the MPhil programme launched this year.

» SAIACS MA and MTh degrees have been given entry into PhD programmes in the UK and USA.

Our living credentials are our graduates and our resident and visiting faculty now serving the Lord Jesus and His Church in Asia and beyond. Hundreds of our graduates are faculty of theological institutions. In fact, SAIACS is the largest provider of faculty in different disciplines to evangelical theological institutions in India and many more are missionaries, pastors and leaders in mission organizations.

People from all over India and other countries have studied at SAIACS – Australia, Bhutan, Brazil, Canada, China, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Kenya, Korea, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, New Zealand, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Thailand and the USA. They return to their home areas or other lands as leaders in churches, mission movements, theological education, and key Christian organizations.

“Coming to SAIACS was a dream comes true, studying here - an experience of academic excellence. Missiology which earlier seemed undemanding after studying here I found quite challenging and worth exploring.”

Academic Programmes

SAIACS offers doctoral and masters programmes. They are largely residential, with some of the students

opting to be day scholars.

Normally, the programmes at SAIACS follow a modular system. Each module runs over four weeks. A typical MTh/ MPhil module entails 36 classroom hours of lectures and seminars, with assignments and examination added. Similarly, a typical MA module entails 36-45 classroom hours. MA includes Context Based Learning in which students are placed in a supervised ministry context so that they experience practice of classroom learning.

DOCTOR OFMinistryDMIN This programme is intended for people who are engaged in part or full-time vocational Christian ministry and exhibit Christian leadership skills. Students maintain their ministry involvement and work while pursuing this In-Ministry programme. As such, it is non-residential. SAIACS offers DMin specializations in Missiology and Pastoral Theology. DMin is the highest

professional degree for those engaged in local church and para-church ministries, world missions, and applied training, but it is terminal, and does not lead to PhD. The programme is accredited by the Asia Theological Association.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS » A three-year MA (TS) (Advanced), or

MDiv, BD, MTh, or the equivalent from a recognized institution, done in residence with at least second class (minimum 55%; B+ average) or equivalent.

DOCTORAL PROGRAMMEPHD, DMISSOf the SAIACS doctoral degrees, the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Doctor of Missiology (DMiss) have two components: (a) the Pre-Doctoral Programme (PDP) and (b) Candidacy, which entails thesis writing.

THE PRE-DOCTORAL PROGRAMMEPrior to formal acceptance as a PhD/DMiss candidate, students join the Pre-Doctoral Programme (PDP) under a Supervisor. The PDP has several objectives:

» To develop the student’s comprehensive general knowledge of their discipline;

» To reach reading competency in research languages as relevant to the specialization;

» To identify a possible topic for research; » To allow the Supervisor to assess the

student’s ability to engage in PhD/DMiss level research.

» The PDP will normally take 6-12 months when the student will:

» Read at least 1500 pages per month; » Meet every two weeks with the Supervisor,

bringing a written report or paper for discussion;

» Credit or audit modules (at MTh level) deemed relevant;

» Attend and participate in departmental doctoral seminars;

“What is important is not just my personal education and growth; valuing and learning to respect the other students is equally important.”

Towards the end of the student’s PDP, the Supervisor will submit to the Doctoral Committee an assessment of the student’s progress and abilities for research. Upon a positive assessment, the Supervisor will invite the student to submit a dissertation proposal and study plan, thus reaching Candidacy. If the assessment is negative, the student’s studies will be terminated.

The purpose of the MTh programme is to train the student for teaching in theological institutions and for

leadership in various church related ministries. The programme is designed to enable qualified graduates in theology to broaden and deepen their knowledge and sharpen their research skills and competencies beyond BD / MDiv level. This goal is achieved by taking a limited number of courses in their area of specialization, and by doing a thesis at an advanced level in that same area of Specialization. Thus, a student who completes MTh with a first class or high second class will be well prepared to enter a doctoral programme.

In 2013, the SAIACS MTh programme offers seven specializations accredited by the Asia Theological Association: Old Testament, New Testament, Missiology, Pastoral Theology and Counselling, Theology and Ethics, History of Christianity and Study of Religions.

SAIACS offers an alternate award option by the University of Mysore, where the same programme is called Master of Philosophy in Theology, MPhil (Th). MTh and MPhil (Th) are identical in content and compare as follows:
