We spoke to MR. AVIJIT GHOSH, Vice President (Distribution-Services), about how CESC is preparing

itself for Durga Puja 2014.

change in the entire process for the last three-

four years. The nodal officers proactively

communicate with the Puja organizers. Two

special helpline numbers are operational for 24

hours, for a month from 30th August till the end

of the Pujas. Nodal officers also give necessary

technical support, particularly in terms of

adopting better and modern electrical practices.

Safety is the top-most priority for us.

Communication is greatly focused upon.

Centralized communication meetings are

organized with government agencies. Nodal

officers meet Puja committee members at local

police stations. Senior officers in the ranks of

ED, VP, GM, DGM visit important Puja pandals.

Puja organizers also meet at CESC House and at

each regional office.

We have a host of soft and hard services for Puja

applicants. These include spot billing, e-payment

facilities, and enhancing emergency breakdown

groups placed at strategic locations to reduce

down-time in the event of outages. 162 mobile

vans operate round-the-clock during the Pujas

to strengthen the service. Large and small

generators are placed strategically. Duty officers

report at Command Station and other district

offices for continuous monitoring. Officers are

placed at Lal Bazaar and Bhabani Bhaban, police

control rooms, in order to overview the situation

and co-ordinate with the various government

agencies.

Based on footfall, stand-by teams are placed at

some major Puja pandals.

Customer-care stalls are

also put up to spread

awareness.

Preparation for

Durga Puja 2014

received 3657 Puja applications, majorly from

Kolkata, and also Howrah, 24 Paraganas North

& South, and a part of Hooghly. CESCs offer

during this time is 24 x 7 power supply, beginning

post Mahalaya till the end of the Pujas. We aim

to fulfill two essential criteria by our service:

firstly, to provide stable, uninterrupted supply

for the entire festive season; secondly, to

implement an adequate and simple process for

ensuring quick resolution of the Puja application

process. The application process can take as

little as 10-15 minutes.

The scheduled day of connection is intimated

to the Puja committee through text messaging

and tele-calling. The process can be tracked

online and communication is carried out at every

step. Based on history, we start functioning

before the applications are submitted. Officers

from CESC visit the local police stations. An

officer is assigned the nodal position for each

pandal, who acts as the contact person for any

assistance required. This concept of having a

nodal officer has bridged the gap between CESC

and the Puja committee, adding a valuable

CESCs role during Durga Puja, the most

celebrated festival in West Bengal, is not aligned

along the lines of service only, but is a concern

of responsibility and prestige. Last year, we

We also spoke to Officers and Supervisors from the Mains Department, and they discussed with us

in detail about how they are preparing themselves for Durga Puja.

execution. For cases that are unmatched with

respect to load requirement or supply point, an

inspection report is submitted and the job flows

back to the initial point.

We receive around 3700 Puja applications which

incur a demand of approximately 50 MW.

Applications are made in a particular format,

through SWOC (Single Window Operating

Centre). This is a common platform where

representatives from CESC, KMC, Police Service,

and Fire Brigade Service, are placed together,

for the convenience of the applicants. All

connections are wholly unmetered.

Based on KMC borough divisions, 3800+ forms

are ready and have been sent to the local police

stations, from where those will be collected by

the Puja organizers. SWOC will be operational

from 8th September to 20th September.

Forms are simplified, easy, and uncomplicated.

Communication points with the applicants have

been increased immensely. As many as three

contact numbers are taken from each Puja

committee.

A test form is also given out by which a licensed

Government electrical contractor certifies that

the electric installations on part of the consumer

are maintaining all safety guidelines and

standards.

If all supply points match, the applicant is given

a bill right away. A database is constantly

maintained where the payment is updated

immediately. The application is then ready for

Once the payment formalities are done, the

Application/ MR number is generated. The

implementation of the connection is carried out

in three areas: the supply effect, preventive

maintenance of network, and monitoring. The

new load to be supplied via existing network

requires tough monitoring. Text message is sent

to the applicant about the scheduled date of

execution. The job flows into the online site

office system for execution. A set of workmen

are allocated for the job, who send information

regarding any discrepancy. Durga Puja

preparation becomes the priority for us.

After the supply is effective, a text message is

again sent to the applicant informing that the

process is completed. Applicants are also given

telephone calls. The feedback system is very

strong. If the call center gets any negative

feedback, the job is sent back to the system. It

is a closed loop feedback system and there is

constant monitoring on our part.

Additionally, a nodal officer from CESC is attached

to the Pujas under each local police station. The

Puja organizers can contact the nodal officer

regarding any query or information about break-

down of power supply at any time of the day.

The nodal officer acts as the precise contact

point, for any communication from the Puja

organizers end.

Foremen operate in three shifts during this time.

Popular Puja pandals are concentrated upon.

Network diagrams are given by us to the junior

engineers at the regional depot. Communication

can make or break the situation. We constantly

communicate with the Puja organizers

electricians, so that fault for unbalanced load

can be avoided.

Mithileshwar SinghJunior Engineer, Mains

South West Regional Depot

For the process of execution, supervision is in

the hands of technical supervisors or junior

engineers. Based on previous years status

updates, we keep our inventory ready. Materials

are delivered to respective set of workmen who

are accordingly directed by us. Frontline feedback

is given by us on the online system. Verification

has to be done at multiple levels on a case-to-

case basis.

In co-ordination with the electricians of the Puja

organizers, our workers execute the connections

and give feedback to the supervisors. It is our

duty to ensure that safety is maintained. In case

of any anomaly during connection, the change

is supervised and implemented depending on

the intensity of the problem. Any such change

is intimated to senior authority. Throughout the

Pujas we have to ensure that network and assets

are balanced as per requirement to cater to the

additional load. There is a limitation from the

borough end because we cannot dig roads during

the Pujas owing to footfall. Maintenance is pre-

panned and preventive checking of assets is

carried out by junior engineers.

After everything has been implemented, and

the festivities have begun, our job is to

concentrate on prevention and restoration of

faults. We study the diagrams given to us, and

accordingly replace cables. The physical challenge

we face during the Pujas is that movement on

the roads is restricted, which is a major hurdle

in the fault repairing process. Well-equipped,

skilled man power is placed on stand-by at

strategic points. Instant back-up and proper fault

remedy equipment is kept ready to ensure

instant replacement in case of any fault. Payment

is looked into later.

Overall feedback about the supply is with the

technical supervisor operating in general shift.

Post-evening, specialized feedback has to be

addressed by us. All data is analyzed and

prepared in advance. Back-up generators are

placed at strategic locations as per previous

history. The presence of these back-up

generators has led to a radical improvement in

our service over the years.

I have seen in London, peopleare warned against installingswitch board inside toilets whichcan be easily accessed by hand. Its always installed above thenormal access point. Its tough to make kidsunderstand why they should not touchswitch boards, which they think arefancy playing objects. When the hugemoving billboards were parked in frontof my home, I made them realise whatcan happen to them and I think for fewdays they will be hesitant to touch theswitch boards.

SEPTEMBER 2014

CESCs Central Safety Day event at the Science City

Auditorium in Kolkata on 9 August 2014 was its largest

ever, with over 1,600 workmen, supervisors and

officers participating. Until date, Safety Day has been

observed at CESC in the form of separate events at

its generating stations, district offices and the

HT-Mains. This was the first time when personnel

from all locations congregated in a mega event aimed

at promoting safety awareness across the

organisation. Over 60 officers of the Administration

division were also part of the proceedings, working

tirelessly to manage the huge gathering and ensuring

that everything was executed in an organised manner.

The day started with a welcome address by Gautam

Ray, Executive Director (HR & Administration), CESC.

Aniruddha Basu, CESCs Managing Director, addressed

the gathering as the keynote speaker. He also

requested everyone to stand and observe a minutes

silence for CESC workers who had lost their lives to

unfortunate accidents. This was followed by the Chief

Guest, Moloy Ghatak, Minister for Labour and ESI,

Government of West Bengal, delivering the inaugural

address. The other dignitaries who were special

invitees included Ram Chandra Dutta, Director-CIF;

Abhijit Naskar, Deputy Director & Honorary General

Secretary, National Safety Council (West Bengal

Chapter); Dr. B. Sikdar, Deputy Director (Medical)-

Factories; and Prof. Bidyut Bhattacharya, Director-

School of Safety & Occupational Health, BESU.

All senior officials of CESC attended the event.

Speeches were delivered by Sanjoy Chakraborti, ED

(Generation) and Abhijit Bose, ED (Distribution-

Technical). Sadhan Ghosh, Professor of Jadavpur

University and a safety auditor, also addressed the

gathering. The general secretaries of CES Workmens

Union, CESC SKU Union and CESC Officers Association

also made short speeches. Two safety films, Safety

is Our Way of Life and A Life Saved, were screened.

Both films featured CESC employees in the cast. The

second film is inspired by a recent real-life event and

is focused on the story of a worker who was saved

in the nick of time because of CESCs adherence to

correct safety and first-aid procedures. This was

followed by a play, entitled Jagoron (Awakening),

which highlighted the importance of using appropriate

PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) for safe working,

and included well-known television actors, CESC

employees and their family members in the cast.

A prize distribution ceremony was also part of the

event. The CESC Managing Director and S.K. Goswami,

GM (Employee Relations), gave away the prizes to

employees who had excelled at adhering to safety

principles and suggested innovative ideas for working

safely.

We interacted with two Lady Secretaries at CESC House, who

have been working as Telephone Operators with the company

for years. Here are snippets from the conversation.

Margaret DNacioLady Secretary, Grade 5

CESC House

Tell us about how the calls were operated

back then.

It used to be a big cord board. The receiver

looked like the present day head phone. Every

time a call came the indicator on the board

would light up. We had to insert the cords into

the board to answer calls.

How many of you worked on the operations?

We were three ladies who worked together

attending the calls. Two of us worked for two

hours at a stretch followed by a fifteen-minute

break. Lunch was rolling as we could never leave

the board unattended.

So, you literally received calls every second?

There were 100 extensions and 40 lines, all

manned by just the three of us. There were no

direct lines at CESC at that time. All calls,

incoming or outgoing, had to be through the

operator. We received calls from customers

within Calcutta, and national calls from Delhi,

Bombay, and so on.

Considering how basic communication was

in those days, operating calls for an organization

like CESC was indispensable to the functions

of the company. What do you have to say about

that?

Yes, we always knew that we had to be

responsible in our job. When we went for

training, we were told how important our work

was. Our importance was always acknowledged

by the company.

Do you feel nostalgic at how the process has

changed in these years?

There has been a sea change in the

communication area. With the coming of direct

How long have you been working at CESC?

I have been working at CESC since September

1988. I was interviewed by Mr. A. L. Sarkar, who

was then Chief GM (Admin.), and Mr. Framjee,

then Dy. GM (Admin.). I was excited and nervous

about beginning work. After 26 years in this

company, I will be retiring from service this year.

We have been told that call load was very

high back in those days. Your comments on

that?

Oh yes! The telephone board used to be

extremely busy back then. From 1988 till about

2004, the board was especially busy. There was

a time when we did not even have time to sip

tea.

Could you anticipate the work pressure

before joining office?

I knew it would be a very busy call board at CESC

since we were working for the general public.

Hello...Welcome to CESC Limited

36

lines, call centers, and most importantly, mobile

phones, the calls have reduced drastically. We

still receive calls from customers. We either

connect the call or give the caller the relevant

contact number.

You have received so many calls down these

years. Any particular call(s) that you remember

for its peculiarity or that took you by surprise?

We received the usual complaint calls from

customers. I cannot remember any exceptional

call as such. One call that really surprised me

was the one I received from Mr. Jaideep Basu

Roy, Manager (Admn.), this July when he

informed that I had been promoted to Grade 5.

I was not expecting that call (smiles).

Your thoughts on your retirement.

CESC is my first home. I dont feel like leaving

this place.

Daphne DomingoLady Secretary/ Telephone Operator

CESC House

and outgoing calls went through the boards. We had

to book trunk calls all the time.

How did you like your work in those days?

We really enjoyed working because we kept busy.

How was the career in telephones back then?

We did lightening booking and quick calls. I doubt

these terms exist anymore. All these have been cut

off with the advent of mobile phones.

How has the communication system changed

now from the point of view of Telephone

Operators?

It is an enormous change. Now there are only STD

and ISD calls. At times, there are intervals when we

do not receive any calls. Earlier we couldnt even

breathe. Incoming calls are still there but outgoing

calls have dwindled.

Do you think this change has been for the better

or worse?

It has surely changed for the better. Communication

has become much easier now.

Who are there in your family?

I have four sons and one daughter. My daughter

and two of my sons are married. I have five

grandchildren.

Do your grandchildren fiddle with mobile phones?

Oh yes! Kids these days! My grandchildren are always

fiddling with smart phones. They play video games

all day. My youngest grandchild is 3 years old and

she is too much on the tab.

Your profession is operating calls, considered a

job of responsibility, and now phones are

available even with toddlers. Your comments on

that?

We could not imagine handling telephones when we

were three years old. Technology has enhanced

greatly and so has knowledge. My grandchildren

know how to operate mobile phones much better

than I do.

How has your experience working at CESC been?

I love talking to people, so my job makes me very

happy. I get along with everyone here. My experience

at CESC has been very good.

When did you join CESC?

I joined this company in 1997, and have been working

here as a retainer for 18 years.

How was work eighteen years back?

The call boards were very busy. The board was always

lit up! We couldnt get up from our seats. All incoming

String of awards for CESCs power units

Two projects of CESCs 135 MW Southern Generating

Station have been awarded the Innovation Award

2014 by the IPPAI (Independent Power Producers

Association of India). Anupam Datta, VP (Technical),

and Suprakash Ghosh (Manager-SGS) represented

CESC at the award ceremony held on 2 August 2014

at Goa.

The awarded projects are:

Installation of micro hydel turbine to extract energy

(45 kW) from circulating water outflow. This is the

first project of its kind in India

Application of cryogenic isolation as a maintenance

practice. The project aims at doing away with the

practice of shutting down a pressurised water line

during maintenance and freezing the pipeline water

with dry ice instead.

Asian Power Awards

The Southern Generating Station (SGS) has also been

selected for an award at the Asian Power Awards

2014. The awards were presented on 11 September

2014 at Kuala Lumpur.

The SGS has been selected in the category of

Innovative Power Technology of the Year for its

Micro Hydel Power from Condenser Return Circulating

Water to River project.

The 9 MWp solar power project at Pratapgarh,

Gujarat, has also been shortlisted for an award in the

Solar Power Project of the Year category. The project

will be winning this award for the third successive

year, having bagged the Gold in the earlier years.

Editors Note: MWp=MegaWatt Peak. It is a measure

commonly used for solar plants and refers to the maximum

power output from a solar panel under standard test

conditions.

On the 1 August, CESC held a communications

meeting at Indian Management Institute,

Kolkata. The meet was an initiative taken to

improve internal communication, based on the

feedback received. Although this was the second

meet being held, the concept was fairly new

and an excited buzz was palpable throughout

the auditorium. The meeting began with Mr

Aniruddha Basu and Mr Goutam Roy establishing

an informal mood, and encouraging free flowing

conversations. They also spoke about the

direction which the company aims to take this

year, that is, transformation. In every sector, the

company is looking to transform itself to be

better, be it distribution, communication,

customer relations or employee interaction.

The meet continued with employees putting

forth their points regarding the Performance

Management System which were readily

answered. Some enthusiastic participants

brought up certain customer related issues which

they thought needed to be discussed. An overall

interactive, informal occasion, CESC hopes to

organise more of such events.

The Confederation of Indian Industry held their

annual Energy Conclave at The Oberoi Grand,

on the 12 August. The meet began with a

welcome address by Mr. Aniruddha Basu, MD,

CESC Ltd. The Chief Guest for this meet was Mr

Manish Gupta, the Honourable Minister-in-

Charge, Department of Power & Non-

Conventional Energy Source. The main point of

focus was the state of the power sector, which

encompassed not only the growth witnessed

since the 1990s, but also the projected capacity

which hopes to be added in the 13th Plan (2017-

2022).

The main concern which reverberated in all

the speakers words was definitely the

shortage of fuel. Availability of domestic coal as

well as the quality of the coal available posed

a serious threat to the power sector. There

was a silver lining, however, in the form of

renewable resources replacing coal and other

initiatives being taken in order to meet the

shortage and improve quality. Looking

forward, this sector aims to become one which

can help in making profit, once all the issues are

sorted.

Mr. Sanjoy Kumar Chakraborti, ED (Generation)

Since its inception, CESC has always had its own

generation for the supply of power to customers.

In the early days, power was supplied to localised

areas by means of diesel sets. Our first coal based

power station was commissioned in 1912, in the same

place where New Cossipore Generating Station stands

today. After independence, CESC was self-sufficient

in power supply. Owing to the change in policy post-

independence, CESC was not allowed to enhance its

generation. Titagarh Generating Station was

commissioned to combat our citys load shedding in

the late 70s. Budge Budge Generating Station came up

due to liberalization of Government policy. Presently,

we have four generating stations, namely, Budge Budge Generating Station (BBGS), Southern

Generating Station (SGS), Titagarh Generating Station (TGS), and New Cossipore Generating

Station (NCGS). NCGS, being a very old station, will be closed down this year. Our own generation

caters to about 85% of the system demand.

CESCs goal for the generation division is to attain maximisation of efficient, reliable, cost-

effective power in safe, environmental-friendly way, towards which we are continually striving.

Maximisation of production: We keep high plant availability to maximize output to meet our

consumer demand. Our Plant Availability factor (PAF) is 94-96%, which is best-in-class. This has

been possible by reducing annual overhauling time to 10 days (industry practice being 25-30

days), through parallel activities, modular replacement, and forced air-cooling of turbine. Our

Plant Load Factor (PLF) in summer is 98-99%. All three generating stations appear in CEAs list

of top 10 power stations in terms of production.

Continuous improvement in performance parameters: Efficiency of a power station is

measured by the factors like Heat Rate (heat required to produce each unit of electricity), Auxiliary

percentage (percentage of energy consumed within station), Oil figure (oil required to produce

each unit of electricity). A number of improvement projects have been carried out which have

made us the best or among the top three performers in our country in all these parameters.

Reliability: We reduce boiler tube leakages, unit trip, and partial loss due to non-availability

of equipment through continuous root cause analysis and corrective action of each failure.

Cost initiatives: The major areas of cost are coal and repair & maintenance. We have saved

Rs. 200 crores in the last three years by burning inferior grade of coal and lowering the consumption

of imported coal. At the same time, repair & maintenance cost has been kept at the same level

for the last three years by ways of OEM Substitution, reduction of OT, rationalisation of job, and

import substitution.

Mr. Sanjoy Kumar Chakraborti, ED (Generation)

Safety: We consider safety as an integral part of our operations and maintenance. All our

power stations are OHSAS certified. Any accident is reported up to the highest level in management

and proper corrective & preventive actions are initiated. We have reduced the number of accidents

by 80% in the last five years.

Environment consciousness: We are considered as the best power utility in India in this field.

SPM level Actual Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) discharge from our power stations

is less than 1/3 of normative limits. All our stations are completely zero-effluent. We reuse all

processed water outlets internally for various purposes.

Ash utilization We utilize all our ash in value-added products like blocks, bricks, and cement.

Fly ash from BBGS is carried by riverine route to the cement industry in Bangladesh. From SGS,

fly ash is sent to Ambujas cement plant. For TGS, a fly ash brick factory and a bagging plant are

in place, besides the overseas export. Ash utilization is now a source of revenue by which we

earn approximately Rs. 20 crores annually.

Planting of trees Each year we plant trees in a systematic manner. There are more than

1,10,000 trees in our generating stations.

Carbon credits CESC has earned more than Rs. 30 crores through trading of the carbon

credits earned from in-house improvement projects for carbon reduction. BBGS is the first power

station in the world to get UNFCCC certification for carbon credit.

To maintain our performance standards and to excel in all functional areas, we pursue improvement

initiatives on a daily basis. We continuously benchmark ourselves with the best-in-class power

companies in India. We have undertaken different break through initiatives like installation of

micro-hydel turbine which generates power from free flowing circulating water outlet. We are

the first power utility in the country to implement forced cooling of turbine which reduces down-

time for cooling.

Kaizen is recognized in all generating stations, whereby all permanent and contractual employees

are engaged. As many as 150 Kaizen initiatives are carried out in a year.

To further reinforce the improvement drive and enhance performance parameters, we have

recently formed a centre of excellence team. This dedicated team will implement all improvement

projects, technology absorption and will have systematic approach to identify and correct any

deviation in efficiency parameters of our stations. For our performance and environment standards,

we have received several state, national, and international level awards.

Normal time: scoreline 2-2, after tie breaker the scoreboard was showing 3-3, sudden death situation,

score line poised at 3-3, spectators at Kurukshetra

University Ground could feel the beat of their

heart, they were witnessing stick craftsmanship

of highest order. Punjab versus CESC, head to

head, eye to eye, no one was ready to accept

defeat, high voltage aggression, intervention of

referee, everything was happening on field.

Edmond Kerketta of CESC was a worried man. The

dream of his team and the company rested on his

shoulder. One look at the clear blue sky of Haryana,

the veteran of many battles slowly composed

himself, turned his head down and took a shot which

foxed the goalie and hugged

the net.

Punjab State Board was stunned into silence, the

entire CESC team led by Anil Praful Ekka was in

raptures. It was a long day at field, time to savour

the cup which came back to us after four long

years.

CESC team displayed exemplary team spirit in

by Ankita

Ankita Ghosh, daughter of

Arindam Ghosh, Junior Engineer

in the CESC Mains Department,

has ranked 10th in the 2014

Madhyamik Pariksha, the Class X

board examination of the West Bengal

Board of Secondary Education. About 6.5 lakh students appeared for this years Madhyamik Examination.

Ankita, who is a student of Katiahat BKAP Girls High School, near Basirhat, West Bengal, scored 673

out of 700 in the examination. She was recently felicitated by West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata

Banerjee.

We spoke to Ankita about her outstanding achievement and her aspirations. Here are snippets from

the conversation.

Congratulations on your remarkable achievement! You must

have been asked this a number of times, but how do you feel

on accomplishing this feat? Were you expecting such a result?

Thank you! I had a target in my mind, that of attaining 670

marks in Madhyamik. To have scored marks higher than that,

which is very gratifying. I am very happy. At the same time,

I dont want to be over confident. There are many more

examinations in future that I have to perform well in.

How did you prepare yourself for the examination?

I Put in regular hours of study throughout the year. I maintained

a particular standard of preparation in every subject.

Your sincerity and hard work have brought success to you.

Would you like to give credit to anyone else for this

achievement?

I Wouldnt have been able to deliver such a performance without

help from others. My parents have always supported me. I

cannot thank my teachers enough for their constant guidance.

My teachers, at school as well as at home, are greatly responsible for my success. I would like to make

a special mention of the contribution of my teachers of English and History respectively.

What are your future aspirations?

Physics is my favourite subject. I want to pursue Physics

in my higher studies. Everyone in my family wants me to

be a doctor. I personally aspire to be an astronaut, but I

reside in a remote place, almost 10 kilometres into the

interior from Basirhat. The facilities available here are too

limited to contain my dream of becoming an astronaut.

What do you do in your free time?

I love drawing. I used to learn art earlier. I sketch whenever

I get time off from my studies. I also love listening to music.

good gesture on CESCs part. The programme was

very inspiring for students like us, who have just

begun to pave their way ahead. I had to cancel

two classes to attend the programme but it was

worth every moment.

Besides professional aspirations, do you have any

personal desires?

There are so many people around us who cannot

dream for want of money. When I become

financially stable, I would want to help others in

their need.

What is your message to your juniors?

It is important to focus on results but results should

not supersede your actions. Do not waste time

pondering on things of the past. It should be a

priority to be a good human being. Always respect

your teachers and be honest in everything you do.

Most importantly, believe in yourself. The result

will invariably be taken care of.

You have a younger sister. How do you guide her

in her studies?

My sister is presently in Class IV. I used to personally

teach her Mathematics till last year. I dont get the

time anymore to teach her on a regular basis. But

I mentor her all the time in her studies in general.

In our leisure, we also sketch together.

How was your experience of meeting the Chief

Minister?

Ever since my results were declared, I had been

hearing from many that I will be felicitated by the

Chief Minister. It was an honour to meet Mamata

Banerjee. She was very friendly and her close

interactions with us showed her to be humble. She

didnt have any air of being such an important

public figure. I really enjoyed her company.

Your comments on CESC Ankur Samman 2014?

Ankur Samman deserves every praise. It was a very

importance, I did live up to the expectations in the

board exams coming out with flying colors (Secondary-

18th in State with a 100% in Mathematics, Higher

Secondary-25th in State with a 99% in Mathematics

among over 7 lakh examinees in each),a performance

flooding me with scholarships and honours (National

Merit Scholarships).

Chance and choice:

Destiny is a word you can

either believe or ignore

it altogether. Unlike

other Indian students of

similar merits usually

pursuing engineering or

medicine, I felt I was

destined to do

something else.

Somewhere inside me

resided a rudimentary

mathematician, an

inquisitive research mind willing to discover and think

beyond the obvious that often got me indulging in

Olympiad problems and coming up frequently with

startling ingenuous solutions. This subliminal passion

for mathematics made me do away with all ranks in

Engineering like IIT-JEE, AIEEE and WBJEE and to take

the most challenging decision of my life when I got

selected among the top 31 candidates all over India

for a berth in the B.Stat(Hons.) course in Indian

Statistical lnstitute(ISI),Kolkata one of the premiere

institutes in mathematics & statistics in the world

producing stalwarts like C.R.Rao and at the same

time was offered admission by Prof. C.S.Seshadri,

FRS, the then Director of Chennai Mathematical

Institute in their combined Mathematics and

Computer Science B.Sc.(Hons) programme where

only 30 mathematical minds were selected all over

India. However, the lure of applying mathematical

principles to solve real life enquiries using statistics

forced me to go for the former.

Meeting stalwarts and learning the subject:

ISI is an oasis in many a ways - being a physically

beautiful and quiet place amidst the noise of the city

A good guidance:

Before starting, I would like to give cent percent credit

of my success to my parents Sri Gautam Kumar Ghosh

and Smt. Putul Ghosh, who sacrificed a lot in their

lives to bring me up from my childhood till date and

it is still going on. They took the toughest and most

challenging decision of

their life -to make me

eligible for having the

entry pass to an

institution like

Ramakrishna Mission

Boys Home, Rahara (the

school rated among the

most prestigious in our

state as well as in the

country) .The long

journey of 15 years here

has injected a lot of

things into me - starting

from the ideology of

Ramakrishna-Vivekananda to academic excellence,

my school, as I feel, is a sacred place of calmness,

peace and sanctity. When I was in Junior-basic school

(grade one to five] I used to participate in various

competitionsdrawing, recitation, sports and won

prizes (but never in sports !!!) but suddenly from

class 6 , I lost interest in these and instead, Math-

riddles and Quizzes occupied that place. The faculties

in my school were very caring, co-operative; I hardly

felt bored in any class even at that age due to their

teaching expertise. One thing needs a special mention:

the Mathematics culture in our school is excellent;

we can boast of that we had some stalwarts in our

school as our teachers. When I was about in class 6,

I was so influenced by them that I readily finished

my prescribed Math-syllabus and started solving

some advanced level math problems. One of the top

scorers throughout my school-life, I had the

opportunity of representing my school in the Regional

Mathematical Olympiad in the 10th standards. I have

been selected to participate in the prestigious Indian

National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO) and that

too in my 10th standard. Born in a Bengali Indian

aptly described as a liberal science or liberal

statistics degree. In analogy with liberal arts, this

can be defined as a college or university curriculum

aimed at imparting general knowledge and developing

intellectual capacities, in contrast to a professional,

vocational, or technical curriculum (Encyclopedia

Britannica) . Apart from curricular work, the academic

structure of ISI also provided me ample project

opportunities to satiate my thirst for research. The

ISI surely taught me to be scientifically independent

and critical. It gave me a professional degree but,

more significantly, its teachers gave me an education.

Immigrant to a New Wonderland:

After completion of B.Stat(Hons.) and M.Stat from

ISI, now I am eagerly looking forward to join unique

program in Statistics (PhD.) at Texas A & M University,

which is among the pioneers in the research of

Statistics endowed with renowned researches and

excellent academic environment. This year I am the

only Indian who has been selected in the PhD.

programme in the Department of Statistics of this

university. I sincerely believe that hard work, coupled

with a deep thirst for knowledge, is the hallmark of

a successful researcher. On one hand, he must be

endowed with perseverance and ability to do

independent thinking on a research problem. I wish

to contribute to the enrichment of the fine work in

Statistics and related areas that is being carried out

there.

Before signing off, I would like to take this opportunity

to convey my heart-felt gratitude to all my good-

wishers including my parents, teachers, friends,

relatives and others.

with so many trees, shrubs, ponds, Amrapali (a name

given by Rabindranath Tagore and was the residence

of Professor P.C.Mahalanobis and his wife Rani

Mahalanobis) as well as its brilliant and curious

students, a faculty having an international recognition

for their research and so many guests all over the

world visiting the campus. Thus, it was altogether a

smooth transition of me from R.K.Mission to ISI. But,

most importantly, I came across some giants of science

like Prof. C.R. Rao (without whom statistics would

not have taken modern shape) ,Prof.Amartya Sen,

Prof S.R.S. Varadhan (a Padma Bhushan and Abel

Prize winner), Prof. M.S. Raghunathan (F.R.S.), Richard

Matthew Stallman (President of the Free Software

Foundation and known for free software movement)

and so many.

Nowadays, every institution wants to be a research

institute and teaching has been a burden to both

the teachers and the students. Fortunately, we are

lucky enough that this is not the philosophy here in

ISI. Also there is no unhealthy competition among

students due to the unique grading system practiced

at ISI. I am privileged to get some of the most brilliant

researchers and teachers, like Prof K. K. Roy, Prof.

Somesh Chandra Bagchi who are among the best

teachers in my life. I will definitely try to mimic their

style when I will be a teacher. The unique aspect of

their teaching was their familiarity with other sciences

that we were taught. Altogether in B.Stat and M.Stat

we had courses in Statistics, Probability, Mathematics,

Computer Science and the other half ran the gamut

of sciences courses like Biology, Genetics,

Anthropology, Public Health, Physics, Geology,

Economics, Demography, Quality Control and

Operational Research. The B.Stat curriculum can be
