Corporate Safety

"Safe kid" is an achiever

• Safe kid is aware about...

Crossing the road Importance of being seen by other drivers while on the road Giving and recognising signals Road etiquettes while cycling, playing, walking Riding on the left side of the road Whom to wait for, while in traffic Need to be considerate towards vulnerable road- users Importance of personal protection (helmet,

seatbelt) Hazards of playing on the road How to maintain his / her vehicle

Corporate Safety

Concept ofDefensive Driving

Let us see history first !

Corporate Safety 4

• On 17August 1896, Bridget Driscoll 44 year old became the first person ever killed by a motor vehicle in London. She was struck by a car which was going “at a tremendous speed.” (12.8 km/h), and the speed limit was 6.4 Km/h only.

• At the inquest the coroner said “this must never happen again”

• In spite of the warning what has happened?

First Road incident !

Corporate Safety

Every 3½ minute one person dies on Indian Roads

•About 1,68,000 deaths and

half a million plus road

accident injuries annually in

India

•The social cost of road

accidents is computed at 1.5 -

3% of GDP

•India records highest road accidents in the world.

Corporate Safety

Defensive Driving is essentially driving in a

manner that utilizes safe driving strategies to

enables motorists to address identified

hazards in a predictable manner.

These strategies go well beyond instruction on

basic traffic laws and procedures

What is Defensive Driving ?

Corporate Safety 7

Then who is a Defensive Driver?

One who cares - •Safety of his own life

• Safety of his family

• Safety of the other road

users

Corporate Safety

I am one who cares about

• Safety of my own life

• Safety of my Family

• Safety of the other road users

ARE YOU ?

Corporate Safety

Road Safety is a Culture

• Have we adopted it……….and if so to what extent ?

• Have we ever paused to consider how much time we spend

on the road in our lives ... and how safely do we do it?

• This is the right time to think !

Road Safety paradigm shift -a new understanding

“Road crash injury is largely preventable and predictable . It

is a human made problem amenable to rational analysis

and counter measure"

-World Bank

Corporate Safety

Some of the main factors for roadaccidents (WHO)

Risk factors influencing being involved in a crash

• Inappropriate/excessive speed

• Presence of alcohol and drugs

• Fatigue

• Being young and male

• Being a vulnerable road user in rural/urban /residential areas

• Traveling in darkness

• Poor vehicle maintenance

• Road design, layout and maintenance defects

• Inadequate visibility (weather condition)• Poor eye sight

Corporate Safety 14

• Driving is not a physical act …….. but instead a MENTAL act !

• How you think is how you will drive.

Defensive Driving & Safety on the Road

Corporate Safety

Defensive Driving

What is the Guru Mantra?

DRIVE BEARING IN MIND

THE ERRORS OF

OTHERS !

Corporate Safety

Be a Defensive Driver

• If you are very ANGRY

• If you are very TIRED

• If you are very UPSET

• DON'T DRIVE

• DON'T DRIVE

• DON'T DRIVE

Top reasons of Road incidents

1.Distracted Drivers

2.Driver Fatigue

3.Drunk Driving

4.High Speeding

5.Aggressive Driving

6.Weather

Distracted Drivers

common driver distractions included:Driver fatigue

Looking at scenery

Other passengers or children

Adjusting the radio, cassette or

CD player

Reading the newspaper, books,

maps or other documents

Another increasingly

serious cause of driver

distraction is cell

phone. Driving and

talking on a cell phone

at the same time

quadruples the risk of

crashing.

Driver Fatigue

What to do?•Take a break from driving at least every

two hours.

•Get a good night's sleep before a long

trip.

•Avoid long drives after work.

•Pull over and stop when drowsiness,

discomfort or loss of concentration

occurs.

•Find out whether any medicine you are

taking may affect your driving.

Symptoms: heavy eyelids Frequent yawning

varying vehicle

speed for no reason

Misjudging traffic situations

Drunk Driving

Drunk drivers are responsible for 30 per cent of all fatal crashes and percentage rose significantly over the weekends, The only way to prevent this type of accident is to not drink and drive. Whenever alcohol is involved, choose a designated driver in advance. This person should not drink at all before driving.

High Speeding

Speeding is a multi-tiered threat as it reduce the amount of time necessary to avoid a crash

it also increases the risk of crashing and makes the crash more severe if it does occur.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), when speed increases from 40 mph to 60 mph,

the energy released in a crash more than doubles.

Simply slowing down and obeying posted speed limits can go a long way toward making the roads safer.

Aggressive Driving/ Rash Driving

An aggressive driver operates a motor vehicle in a selfish, bold or pushy manner, without regard for the rights or safety of the other users of the streets and highways. This includes behaviours such as:Aggressive TailgatingFlashing lights at other drivers because you're irritated at themAggressive or rude gesturesDeliberately preventing another driver from moving their vehicleVerbal abusePhysical assaultsDisregarding traffic signalsChanging lanes frequently or in an unsafe mannerFailure to yield the right of way

Use these tips:•Remain calm

•Keep your distance

•Change lanes once it is safe

•Do not respond hostile Gestures

Weather

heavy rain, high winds and fog can make

driving more difficult.

It need more time to stop and may have

trouble seeing the road clearly.

so when the weather gets bad be sure to

leave extra room between the car in front

of you and slow down.

FIVE KEYS OF SMITH SYSTEM

AIM HIGH IN STEERING

5

GET THE BIG PICTURE

KEEP YOUR EYES MOVING

LEAVE YOURSELF AN OUT

MAKE SURE THEY SEE YOU

AIM HIGH IN STEERING

1 AIM HIGH IN STEERING (SET YOUR SIGHTS HIGH)

Eyes designed to work for us at walking speeds

Average driver does not adjust to gather information at the higher speeds of driving

AIM HIGH IN STEERING

1 AIM HIGH IN STEERING (SET YOUR SIGHTS HIGH)

Need to look ahead where vehicle will be 15 seconds from now to pick a safe path through traffic

15 seconds lead time for safer/efficient/economical driving

GET THE BIG PICTURE

2 Get The Big Picture

Maintain a 360 degree circle of awareness

Avoid distractions in your thinking

– relevant vs non-relevant objects

Check your mirrors every 5 to 8 seconds

Avoid vision barriers

GET THE BIG PICTURE

2 Get The Big Picture

Keep a minimum of 4 seconds following distance

Position your vehicle to maximise visibility

While glancing ahead don’t forget the sides & rear

Recognise and avoid drivers who seem distracted

KEEP YOUR EYES MOVING

3 Keep Your Eyes Moving

Use your central & peripheral vision

Avoid a fixed stare

Avoid Blank stare

Keep your eyes moving at least every 2 seconds

Observe things in quick glances

KEEP YOUR EYES MOVING

4 Leave Yourself An Out

Stay out of groups/clusters

When possible surround your truck with space

Always keep an escape route

KEEP YOUR EYES MOVING

4Leave Yourself an Out

Choose the clearest legal lane, and adjust speed accordingly, to maintain space cushion

Anticipate the actions of other drivers

When stopped behind another vehicle, leave about 8 metres/5 meter's e.g. truck/car

MAKE SURE THEY SEE YOU

5 Make Sure They See You

Detect the presence of potential danger early

Communicate, use clear, well timed communications

Get eye contact by using:-

Your horn [ a light, friendly tap or two ]

MAKE SURE THEY SEE YOU

5Make Sure They See You

Your lights [ the human eye is attracted to light }

Use your brake lights [ a light touch ]

Be ready to quickly alter your plans, if your warning signals are not heeded

DO Follow Rules of the Road

•Understand Road Signage's &Road

Markings

• Traffic signs and road markings are silent speakers to the road users.

• Traffic signs give advance information about road conditions ahead.

• Road markings also give orders, warning or guidance to drivers or riders.

• Learning the meaning of these signs and markings help not to surprise by a bend, a one-way street or a junction ahead.

• Good drivers and riders are always prepared.

Road Signage

Type of Road Signage's

• Mandatory Signs

• Cautionary Signs

• Informatory Signs

Mandatory Signs

• These signs are used to inform road users of certain laws and regulations to provide safety and free flow of traffic.

• These include all signs which give notice of special obligation, prohibition or restrictions with which the road user must comply.

• The violation of these signs is a legal offence. Some of the signs, which fall under this category, are provided as follows.

Mandatory Signs

Cautionary Signs:

These signs are used to warn the road users of the existence of certain hazardous condition either on or adjacent to the roadway, so that the motorists are cautious and take the desired action

Cautionary Signs:

Informatory Signs

• These signs are used to guide road users along routes, inform them about destination and distance

• It helps to identify points of geographical and historical interest and provide other information that will make the road travel easier, safe and pleasant.

Informatory Signs

Road markings are a special type of traffic signs which are marked on the surface of the road.

Like traffic signs they can give orders, warning or information. Sometimes they are used with traffic signs.

Corporate Safety

Safety On The Roads

• Remember, accidents do

not occur - they are caused !

• Human error is the primary

causative factor

Corporate Safety

You are vulnerable !Rider`s skill improves

performance NOT bike specs.

Motorcycles require more skill to control compared to cars. (balance, loading, road grip etc.)

80 % of crashes result in death or serious injury (compared to 20 % in cars)

Very few active safety features (no seat belts, airbags etc.)

Very low visibility to others

No protection from weather or ambient conditions.

Corporate Safety

Stick to your lane

Do not change your lane unnecessarily. Change your lane only if it is necessary and safe to do so.

Procedure to follow : MSM

M (Mirror) – Observe 360º using mirror

S (Signal) – Give indicator well in advance

M (Manoeuvre) – Gradually move your vehicle

Corporate Safety

Intersection approach

Reduce speed

Observe and position

Lane selection

Proper halting - Stop line, gap, stand parallel

Avoiding blind spots
