No The NHW does however work in partnership with many privateand public organisations 7. The NHW StrategyBroken Windows Theory 8. As illegal activities keep on going and brokenwindows becomes a problem in the wholeneighborhood, people who live in the area begin to feelvulnerable. They become less involved in thecommunity and are less willing to intervene tomaintain public order. 9. The NHW StrategyBroken Windows Theory 10. Our Broken Windows Graffiti &SquattersNeighbors helping neighbors 11. Our Broken Windows Gangsters, DrugDealers, Prostitutes, Kidnappers, HumanTrafficking & Thieves 12. Kidnapping in Milnerton has increased by950 % over 10 Years (SAPS Crime Stats) 13. NHW Incident Database & Stats We want to set up a reporting database of all incidents acrossthe Milnerton suburbs To track trends, hot spots, all incidents and crime stats Why, cause most crime is not reported to SAPS! How can we improve on something if we cant measure it?Neighbors helping neighbors 14. RCW consists of concerned residents ofFarnworth Street & Lincluden StreetOUR AIMFoster relationships with neighboursClean up our streetsMake our streets less attractive to criminalsSecure our properties betterAssist authorities with information where possibleCreate a network of like-minded, interested neighbours who look out for each other andthereby build a real community 17. RCW PROJECT #1 - VISIBLE PATROLS OF OUR STREETS We patrol on foot, each night &vary the times We pick up litter& unblockdrains & gutters We connect with neighbours We alert the COCT to problems(refuse, burst pipes, dumping, street signage & lighting) We liaise with the police & sendalerts & updates 18. RCW PROJECT #2 SECURITY OF OUR HOMES, STREET We do pamphlet drops with safety &security hints & tips we suggest lowcost, high impact DIY tips We alert each other & police to suspiciousstrangers / regulars We are petitioning the COCT to installmore lighting in the street & possiblycameras too We will be installing signage warning ofCCTV coverage We are researching bulk purchases of LEDlighting for front & rear of housesTIP 1: set a lamp and radio on a timer in afront room, to switch on and off during theday and nightTIP 2: If you have windows which arevulnerable, consider covering them in Smash& Grab film this slows down entry andmakes the glass difficult to remove.TIP 3: Never leave boxes from newappliances on the pavement onrubbish day! This is a menu for robbers!TIP 4: Dont broadcast vacation plans onFacebook its all too easy for the badguys (many of whom are tech-savvy) totrack plans. And never pack your car for avacation, in the street it screams stealour stuff once we drive away!TIP 2: Always change all the locks in yournewly bought house you never knowwho has keys from previous owners!TIP 3: Even if you dont actually HAVE adog, keep a couple of used doggie toyslying around in your front yard makethe baddies wonder HOW big your dog is 19. RCW PROJECT #3 MARK-IT DAY Publicize the fact that items in your communitys streets are clearly marked. Thieves are opportunists they will steal what is most easy to resell. Make your possessions undesirable. The trick is that the would-be thieves must KNOW that the items in yourhouse/street/neighbourhood are marked! Contact/email/fax ALL of the surrounding pawn shops so that they dontaccept items from your streets. Have signage made for your home & streets saying All home contentsmarked, trackable, traceable 20.
