SCHOOL NEWS

News from the Technological Education Department

This month in the Technological Education Department, students have been working on a number of exciting tech

projects! Mr. Depaolis’s classes have been busy creating photo editing projects, building computers and editing sound

and video. Mr. Wineberg’s classes have been engaged in photo editing projects, creating movie trailer videos and

exciting hands-on sound and audio editing projects. Later in the semester students will be participating at our board’s

international Quest conference in a media production capacity as part of our school's Comm Tech SHSM program. Also

as part of this specialist program, senior grade Tech classes will be visiting the University of Toronto (UofT) for a tour of

the technology courses available to them upon graduation, and junior grade Tech classes will be hosting a guest speaker

from Skills Ontario to learn about planning for careers in technology. Consider encouraging your children to take a Tech

course before they graduate! Descriptions of all Langstaff's courses in Technology can be easily found by logging onto

Career Cruising and looking under, Technological Education. All Tech course codes start with the letter, “T”. Please

visit our technology classroom labs during this month's Parent Night to see some of the great work your children have

been engaged in creating!

Become a Host Family

YRDSB operates a robust homestay program where hundreds of international visa students are placed each semester for their study duration. These students are interested in a full immersion experience where they can improve their English skills and experience Canadian culture first hand.

Our board is looking for families who wish to host an international student. Can you provide ...

a caring, comfortable accommodation for a student

an English speaking environment

opportunities for the student to participate in family life and local activities

integration of an international student into your family

a private room, 3 meals per day plus snacks (it is recommended that Canada's Food Guide is followed to ensure that nutritious and well-balanced meals are provided)

easy access to a public school in York Region on foot or by public transit

If interested, please contact the Homestay Coordinator at [email protected]

ATTENDANCE REPORT

There is a positive relationship between regular attendance and success in school. Students at LSS are required to

attend regularly, to be punctual, and to participate in all scheduled classes.

VALID ABSENCES include illness, bereavement or family emergency.

AUTHORIZED ABSENCES include dentist/doctor appointments, driver’s test, and court appearances.

EXCUSED ABSENCES refer to field trips and school sanctioned events. Students are still considered to be at school.

EXTENDED ABSENCES of four days or more require the completion of a “Special Leave” form at least one week in

advance of the leave. This form may be obtained from the Main Office. A parent/guardian signature is required. It is the

student’s responsibility to catch up on all work missed.

DO NOT plan absences or family vacations during culminating and exam periods as the evaluations CANNOT be

rescheduled.

Type of Absence Parent/Guardian Responsibility

Absent for a Full Day Phone the school with a valid reason the same day or send a note upon

return

Absent for One or More Classes Phone with valid reason indicating the time of absence or send a note with

the student

Leaving Before the End of the Day Student signs out in attendance office with a note from the parent/guardian

In the Event of an Emergency Contact the office as soon as possible.

For safety reasons, students who have signed out must leave the building as they will not be

directly supervised.

Want more information about student attendance?

Students under 18 and/or their parents can pick up a detailed attendance report from the main office.

The weekly attendance summary below includes all of the semester one absences and lates from

Monday, October 9 through Friday, October 13, 2017.
