HELLO!And welcome to the 2nd Pre-camp for Seminar Camp Iceland 2012. In this pre-camp you will find information concerning the immediate basics of a seminar camp and also what YOU need to do next.

We know that many of you are eager to get started and are full of questions, but please take time to read this document thoroughly and if you still have questions then ask them. However, quite a few practicalities will be answered in this document and what is not you don’t really need to know just yet. After all, we do want to keep you excited for more information! ;)

So, without further ado, enjoy the Pre-camp and give us a shout or an e-mail so we know you’re out there!

Sincerely, Your staff

WEL-

COME

WHAT IS A SEMINAR CAMP?Seminar Camp is a three-week programme for 24-30 international youth aged 17-18, plus Staff. For the duration of the Seminar Camp, the experience is not only about being with each other but also learning from one another; about themselves, each other and the rest of the world. Seminar Camp is and opportunity for the participants to be exposed to ways of thinking other than their own and to discover their own responses to the problems and issues faced by people in general today.

Seminar Camp is mainly driven by the participants, with the Staff serving as a support. Even though activities are an important function in achieving the aims, it is the living together that is key to serve its educational purposes.

The atmosphere of Seminar Camp should be constructive and open minded, which does not mean that everybody has to be friends with everyone else, nor does it mean that people will be smiling all the time.

A Seminar Camp offers many possibilities. The quality of the experience depends on the translation of aims to practice. It can be a very rewarding experience which is followed up at a local or national level.

THE AIMS OF THE CAMP1. TO DEVELOP A UNIQUE ATMOSPHERE which helps the participants to discover and formulate their own opinions about international and intercultural problems by exposing them to the ideas of young people from other nations and cultures.

2. TO PROVIDE A GROUP LIVING EXPERIENCE in which young people examine their own motives, gain insights into their own behaviour and that of others and appreciate the responsibilities involved in group living.

3. TO CREATE A SPECIAL ENVIRONMENT which teaches the participants to accept conflicts as a part of daily life and to stimulate a non-violent conflict resolution attitude.

4. TO STIMULATE IN YOUNG PEOPLE an interest and a sense of responsibility for the world as a whole.

All required forms are found in the Forms section of the CISV Resources Website.

CISV International recently updated all the forms so it is easier to fill them in. They are looking pretty awesome! We strongly encourage you to use the new Health Form.

USE QUOTES (AND STATISTICS) - WITH CAUTION!Quotes can be very helpful, particularly in publications, letters or funding bids – but be careful! As with statistics, use them with caution and only include them if they are truly useful and support what you want to communicate about CISV. For instance, using a quote in which someone talks about the great time they had participating in a Programme and all the good friends they made might sound lively and fun. However, it may not actually tell the reader anything about how CISV educates and inspire action for a more just and peaceful world.

A quote in which someone speaks of what they have learned and what they have been inspired to do as a result, is far more effective and supports CISV’s purpose - and it can still be lively and fun.

MAKE IT PERSONALWhen you are writing or talking about CISV think about the person you want to speak to and speak to them directly. When you use the second person ‘you’, you are directly engaging that person and getting their attention. You can see the difference between the 3 pairs of examples below.

CISV needs support for its educational ProgrammesWhen you help CISV by supporting one of our Programmes, you are helping us to make a difference

CISV participants gain knowledge of Peace EducationCISV educates and inspires you to act for a more just and peaceful world

CISV offers volunteers training and development opportunities When you volunteer with CISV, we give you the training and support to match your enthusiasm and commitment

VOLCANOESIceland is volcanically and seismically active. Grimsvötn volcano erupted on 21 May 2011 and caused disruption to Icelandic and European airspace. The effects of the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull volcano, on 21 March 2010 are well known. There is always the possibility that another volcano could erupt, although constant monitoring by the Icelandic authorities means that there should be notice of an imminent eruption.

VISA REQUIREMENTSENTRY REQUIREMENTS - PASSPORT VALIDITY

You must hold a valid passport to enter Iceland. Your passport must be valid for a minimum period of three months from the date of entry into Iceland.

ICE-

LAND

AIRPORT TAX Airport taxes are included in your flight ticket.

SPECIAL THINGS TO BRING In July the sun rises at 03:04 am and sets at 11:57pm, but it only just kisses the horizon so don't expect any darkness.. so bring an eye mask for sleeping if the light bothers you.

Mosquito repellent will not be necessary to bring as mosquitoes are very scarce in Iceland - as are most insects.

Variety is the key to a nice trip to Iceland.Pack for all weather and you won't be caught off guard.

Make sure to pack rain gear and a swim suit. A jacket is also advisable due to often cold nights.

WEATHER Iceland in the summer is very unpredictable. It can be around 23°C-27°C during camp but it can also be 5°C-10°C. There is no way of knowing so best bet is pack for both options.

The average temperature in Reykjavík in July is 11,2°C so most likely we will get somewhat warm days and chilly nights

ELECTRICITYVoltage: 220 VoltsIceland uses the Europlug/Schuko-Plug (CEE types)

Page 10: [S-2012-010] Pre-camp 2

MEDICINEBring a prescription of the medication you may need. Medicine can be very expansive in Iceland so bring enough for your whole stay.

Also remember to bring a prescription for extra glasses/contact lenses if you wear glasses/contacts. And don't forget to bring the contact lens solution :)

FOODWe are going to be cooking ourselves, so bring ideas and good will! Cook books may be helpful, but it would be nice to have some regional, old-fashioned recipes to develop our “grandma” cooking skills

If you are vegetarian or have some kind of allergy or special need you need to tell us as soon as possible!

MISC.SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENTTHEME OF THE YEAR 2012

This year CISV programmes are focused on sustainable development. Sustainable development combines economic and social well-being with protecting the environment by using natural resources responsibly.

Let us contribute to sustainable development in our camp along side CISV camps all over the world. To get you started you can go to this website and browse through the different projects and ideas.

More specifically, here is a list of activities on sustainable development related to the Seminar Camp programme.

Since we will be cooking together we suggest that you take a look at the sustainable cooking site on CISV’s international resources.

For more resources related to food an sustainability a CISV project between Colombia and Norway called I Have A Mango has created a helpful publication called the lunchbox.
