Morpeth Footpaths Society.

The final Morpeth Footpaths Society evening walk for 2012 took place on a (rare) fine summer’s evening in July. Leaving the Ridley Arms car park we walked down a lane and through some woodland before crossing a field which two weeks earlier had been very muddy and boggy due to incessant heavy rain. Although still ‘clarty’ in places the walking was much easier, and we were grateful to the landowner for cutting back and strimming some of the overgrown grass and foliage. At Bellasis Bridge we could see evidence of how high the water level had been during our wet summer. We continued along the road admiring the wildflowers and hedgerows before taking the road down to Make Me Rich Cheese Farm. We had a short break here (sadly the cafe was closed for the evening) and were startled by a heron who swooped over our group before landing on a tree in a nearby garden. Eventually the heron departed and so did we, continuing along the permissive path to Bog House where we could see the evidence of the open cast activity which is taking place in the area and changing the landscape. Turning left towards New Kennels we passed the kitchen garden and cottages belonging to the Ridley Estate, Blagdon Hall. The Hall and estate was built in the mid 1700s for Matthew White and the Hall is still occupied by his descendants, the Ridley family (the 5th Viscount Ridley took over the Estate earlier in 2012 following the death of his father). We passed a tree and commemorative plaque to generations of the (aptly named) Hudson family who were in service to the Ridley family until 2001. After passing a field inhabited by free range pigs, we then found ourselves walking for a short while along the busy and noisy A1 before taking the gate into Stan-nington Vale and returning to the Ridley Arms after 2 and a quarter hours and 6 miles of walking. Some of the group enjoyed the hospitality of the Ridley Arms (it was still warm enough to sit outside) before making the short trip back to Morpeth.

PEGSWOOD DANCE CLUB (Pegswood Welfare Club)Ballroom and sequence dancing to live music with a friendly and welcoming atosphere. All abilities welcome. Dances held every Tuesday 8 till 11 pm at Pegswood Welfare Club. Admission £2.50.

PLAYTIME PLUS (St Aidan’s Church, Stobhill)Playtime Plus meets during school term times and is a group for the under 5s and their carers. Meetings start at 9.30 am and children enjoy a variety of activities. We begin with informal play in the children’s area at the back of the church where we also offer refreshments to the children and adults. After that we move to the front of the church, nearer the altar. The children are encouraged to sit on the carpet and take part in a very informal act of worship. This involves listening to a short story which is delivered using a variety of visual aids, depending on the theme, and is usually interactive due to the age of the children; then song time when one or two songs may be chosen by myself in connection with our theme but the children are also welcome to choose any particular song they wish (nursery rhymes etc.) that are familiar to them. We end the worship time with a short, sung prayer. We conclude with a simple craft which is also linked to our story and helps to reinforce the message it contains. We are a very informal group, with a mixture of people who come to Church and others who don’t and anyone interested in finding out more can contact Lesley, who runs the group, or just come along and give us a try.
