R un Norwich, the hugely popular 10k race through the city centre, is back on Sunday August 7, and entries are now open. Over 3,800 people entered the inaugural race in 2015, and event organisers Norwich City Community Sports Foundation (CSF) took the move to reward those who showed their support last year, by including a two-day priority entry window for past entrants. Following the closure of this priority window, general entry opened at 9am on Thursday, February 25. To date, around 7,000 people have registered their interest for Run Norwich including previous entrants, and overall race capacity will be limited to 5,000 for 2016. The entry fee has been frozen at £23 for UK Athletics affiliated runners (£25 unaffiliated) but this year, entrants have the option to take up one of the free places to run for one of the four official race charities (Norwich City Community Sports Foundation, Norfolk Accident Rescue Service, Nelson’s Journey and Age UK Norwich). There are a limited number of free charity places available (max. 150 per charity), and those that select this entry option will commit to raising a minimum of £100 for their chosen charity. Improvements to the race this year will include a revised start area and the exciting addition of the Cathedral grounds to the already picturesque route. There will be a postal option this year for those who do not wish to collect their race pack from the two-day expo at The Forum before race day, but organisers have added some excitement to the expo collection process, as 10 lucky winners will find a Run Norwich Golden Ticket in their race pack that entitles them to a host of prizes, and money-can’t-buy experiences for their Run Norwich day out. CSF director Ian Thornton said: “The success of last year’s event exceeded even our own high expectations. The city came alive, and runners, organisers, volunteers and spectators made it a special day that we want to repeat in Norwich for years to come. “Our race technical team took the feedback from last year’s runners and have come up with some improvements to the route that we think will make this year’s race even better; we’re grateful to the team from the Cathedral for allowing us to take Run Norwich through the grounds. “Yet again, the support for CSF and Norwich City FC of race board members - The Forum, Norwich BID, Visit Norfolk, and Norwich City Council - has been essential in the planning of Run Norwich 2016.” A memorable first event took place in August last year and saw thousands of people, from seasoned club runners to first timers pound the streets of Norwich around some of the city’s finest landmarks. Nick Earl (CONAC) and Tracy Barlow (Thames Valley Harriers) became the first ever Run Norwich winners, with impressive times of 31:28, and 35:46 respectively.
