Rough Cut EvaluationAndrew Johnson

Codes and ConventionsOur Thriller opening incorporates many codes and conventions associated with the thriller genre. The opening shot is effective at creating suspense. This

also links with the choice of music. Editing pace quickens towards the climax of the action helping to create suspense. In addition the variety of point of view and over the shoulder shots help the audience engage with the character also increasing suspense. The diegetic scream is also a convention of thriller

films and helps to show the hybrid genre of horror. I believe our work has been influenced by classic film ‘Psycho” and the more recent film “The Blair Witch

Project “. Hitchcock's ‘Psycho’ prompted my group to use a variety of shots to create suspense whilst “The

Blair Witch Project|” influenced our work when thinking of the idea.

RepresentationsThe main representation in our Thriller opening is

the dominance of men over women. This is stereotypical representation of women who are seen as passive to the male gender in society. The use of camera angles combines with the

amount of screen time given to each character to reinforce this representation. Low angles and long takes of the male character reinforce his

dominance where as high angles and short takes of the female character show her passive and

weak nature.

Distribution

AudienceThe target audience of our Thriller opening would be

adults (15+) of both genders however it would be suited slightly more for males. This is due to the male dominance in the film. The narrative also

suggests it would be for a male audience as it is a male character who hunts down female

characters.

Attracting Audience

TechnologiesMy control over the camera and tripod has significantly

improved compared to our first filming. After each shoot it was clear as group we had progressed as the quality of footage had improved. We had the problem

of filing in the dark. This resulted in having footage which was hard to see and in some cases you couldn’t see the actors. To over come this we used additional

lights in an attempt to improve the quality of the footage however it wasn’t as good as it could have

been. This is something we will have to look to improve for our final piece. Our editing of the footage also progressed after each filming session. We where able to use the software to edited in fine detail right

down to single frames. We also used Adobe After Effects to enhance the footage however this was done

on preconviced knowledge

ProgressionOur initial research and brainstorming helped immensely when it came to our planning stage. Our research influenced our shot choice as to reflect common codes and conventions. The

creation of the animatic helped us visualize our idea and helped to show which shots worked and

those that didn't. Our communication and organization as a group was good to start with

however developed to work extremely well over time. So did our control over the equipment and

our knowledge of the editing software.
