Weekly News and Announcements
Hello Rotarians and Friends! We had a great crowd at this week’s meeting
with everyone anxious to hear and see the great Paul Warfield. Let me say,
he did not disappoint.
Chris Shape, aka Fellowship Bob, entertained members and guests alike by
asking the age old question “Why did the chicken cross the road?” and
providing the answers given by notable politicians. You can imagine how
ridiculous some of the answers were. We all had a good laugh and were in
fine spirits as the meeting got underway.
Guests and Visiting Rotarians – Needless to say, we had a TON of guests
this week. I apologize in advance if I get any names wrong. It’s sometimes
hard to hear introductions in the front of the room. Guests: Tim Shafner,
Joe Pape, Nancy Brown, Mark Marini, Ginny Bond, Dan Smith, John LaPolla,
Pastor Todd Johnson, Shari Harrell Shape, Phil May, Phyllis Jenkins, and
Alice Donohoe. Visiting Rotarians included Jim Tallman from Niles and Rod
Zeck from Cortland.
Expressions of Concern – We got another update today on our dear friend,
Tom Wareham. According to George Thompson, Tom is more alert, but
progress is slow. He still has a long way to go will be in the Cleveland Clinic
for another several weeks.
Warren Homecoming Concert – The concert we will be sponsoring on
Saturday, September 24th, as part of the Warren Homecoming weekend will
be the Ohio Players. The Ohio Players are an American funk and R&B band,
most popular in the 1970s. They are best known for their songs "Fire" and
"Love Rollercoaster". Gold certifications, records selling at least five
hundred thousand copies, were awarded to the singles "Funky Worm", "Skin
Tight", "Fire", and "Love Rollercoaster"; plus to their albums Skin Tight,
Fire, and Honey. On August 17, 2013, The Ohio Players were inducted into
the inaugural class of the Official R&B Music Hall of Fame that took place
at Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio. We are delighted to
sponsor this group and encourage all Rotarians to make plans to purchase
tickets when they go on sale. The concert will be held at Packard Music
Hall.
RI International Convention – As you may know, next year our club will be
celebrating its 100th anniversary. Julia Wetstein would love to have a
booth at the Convention in the House of Friendship to let our closest
35,000+ friends know what we have accomplished in our first 100 years.

The Convention will be held from June 10 to 14, 2017. Expect to hear more
about the upcoming convention in Atlanta, GA as the year goes by.
Quaker Steak and Lube Bike Night – The next Bike Night will be on
August 19. If you can help out, please let Chris Shape know.
A Programming Note – Julia Wetstein was delighted to announce today
that sometime in the next couple of months we will have some speakers
from the organization helping victims of acid attacks in Uganda. One will be
the fund administrator, Victoria, and the second will be Hanifa, the woman
we saw in the documentary film by Leonard Lies. We could not be happier
to hear that they will be joining us. Once we have firm dates from them,
we will announce it to the membership.
Speaking of Uganda – The Rotary International President in 2018-2019 will
Be Samuel Frobisher Owori, a businessman from the Rotary Club of
Kampala, Uganda. He has a truly impressive resume, as one would expect,
and Julia has high hopes that he will be supportive of our efforts to help
the victims of acid attacks in his home country. Knowing Julia, they will be
the best of friends by the time he becomes President, especially if she has
a chance to meet him at the Convention in Atlanta.
The Legendary Paul Warfield
Whether you are a football fan or not, everyone knows
the name Paul Warfield. Well, this week, we had the
opportunity to meet and listen to the man himself!
To say we were honored to welcome him is an
understatement. Mr. Warfield was in Warren to promote an event being
held as part of the Warren Homecoming in September. The funds raised
will be given to support the Warren Gridiron Club at Harding High School.
The event is entitled NFL Legends of Warren, Ohio Reunion and Celebrity
Golf Outing. It will be held at Trumbull Country Club on Monday,
September 26th.
As many of his fans could tell you, Paul was born in Warren and played
football at Harding High School. After graduating, he went onto play ball
at Ohio State University under the tutelage of Woody Hayes. He soon
attained his lifelong dream of playing for the Cleveland Browns, but was
eventually traded to the Miami Dolphins where he was part of the team
that won the Super Bowl.
Rotary
Code of
Conduct
As a Rotarian, I will:
Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal
and professional
life.
Deal fairly with others
and treat them and their
occupations with respect.
Use my
professional skills through
Rotary to mentor young people, help those with
special needs, and improve
people’s quality of life
in my community
and the world.
Avoid behavior that
reflects adversely on
Rotary or other
Rotarians.
The Golf Outing will bring back many of the NFL players who got their
start in Warren. These players have been a part of some of the most
famous teams in the NFL including the NY Giants, NY Yankees, Pittsburgh
Steelers, Oakland Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles, Cincinnati Bengals, San
Diego Chargers, and Minnesota Vikings, just to name a few.
The goal is to raise funds for the Harding football program so it can
continue to provide certified tutors for study tables, scholarships,
upgraded weight room equipment, reconditioning, football camps, meals and
additional SAT/ACT test fees. Earlier in the day, Paul spoke to the
Trumbull 100 where he obtained their commitment to support the event.
Not to be outdone, Tony Cafaro matched their commitment and challenged
Rotarians to get behind the event as well (well done, Tony!).
We also had an opportunity to ask Paul questions and listen to him tell us
some stories and share favorite memories from his time at OSU. The one
he told about Coach Woody Hayes was the best!
Anyone wishing more information on the Golf Outing or how to get involved
can go to the Warren Gridiron Club website www.wghsports.com.
Our sincere thanks go out to Mr. Warfield for joining us and to Diane
Sauer for inviting him.
