MY ROTARY DAY Adapted from “Beautiful Sunday”
Thursday morning, I’m up and about
I think I’ll take a walk in the park
Hey, hey, hey, it’s a wonderful day
I’ve got someone waiting for me
When I see him I know that he’ll say
Hey, hey, hey, it’s our Rotary day
Hi, hi, hi, wonderful Thursday
This is my, my, my, Rotary day
When you say, say, say, say that you’ll meet me
Oh, hey, hey, hey, it’s our Rotary day
Birds are singing, you by my side
Let’s take a car and go for a ride
Hey, hey, hey, it’s our Rotary day
We’ll drive on and follow the sun
Makin’ Thursday go on and on
Hey, hey, hey, it’s our Rotary day
Hi, hi, hi, wonderful Thursday
This is my, my, my, Rotary day
When you say, say, say, say that you’ll meet me
Oh, hey, hey, hey, it’s our Rotary day
Hi, hi, hi, wonderful Thursday
This is my, my, my, Rotary day
When you say, say, say, say that you’ll meet me
Oh, hey, hey, hey, it’s our Rotary day

of the things we think, say or do:
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER
FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of
service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage
and foster:
First : The development of acquaintance as an
opportunity for Service;
Second : High Ethical standards in business and professions;
the Recognition of the worthiness of all useful
occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s
occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
Third : The application of the ideal of service in each
Rotarian’s personal, business and community life;
Fourth : The advancement of international understanding,
goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of
business and professional persons united in the ideal
of service.

Pres. Ogie Lim
Fellow Pasig Rotarians:
Welcome to the 46th anniversary of the Rotary Club of Pasig!
Home of the father and son AKS society members, and the RI
Director nominee!
I asked PN John Javier, the Chairman of this year’s preparation, to
make this event as frugal as possible. So, please bear the Spartan
celebration. I have always believed that organizations should give
more focus to making a difference in the society than anything
else. Although fellowship is an integral part of any organization,
here in RC Pasig, at least during my term, it is not the end of all
means.
I invited our partners in service to join us tonight. As of this
writing, they have not confirmed their participation, but I
requested the Eastern Police District (EPD), the Anti-Drug
Council of Pasig (ADCOP), the Pasig City Institute of Science and
Technology (PCIST), Barangay Pinagbuhatan, the RCC,
Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Pasig, Rizal High School and the PCA
Metroplitan Chapter to have their officers over, as our guests.
They are the vehicles to which we can channel our resources in
bringing hope to our less privileged brothers and sisters.
I hope that our celebration tonight will be fun and meaningful to
all of us. I look forward to seeing you all next year when we
celebrate our 47th anniversary.
Mabuhay ang RC Pasig!!

Tinig condoles with spouse Toti on the demise of charter member
Gus L. De Leon. Gus was similar to PPs Rhett and Sonny who
joined their respective companies in the lowest rank and within a
reasonable time, rose to the top position of CEO, without being
related to any of the owners.
After his stint with RFM where he started as a junior officer, in
Personnel, he rose slowly but surely, and, after his Masters Degree
soon joined sales and, in no time, was VP Marketing. Toti and Gus
had nine children all accomplished performers.
His daughter Mitch texted from Copenhagen about the demise last
Sunday yet. Six children already arrived per info. You may have a
chance to pay your respects because funeral Mass is Saturday yet.
I am reproducing a text entirely from PP Chris Portillo of Pasig
East: “The SPED (Special Education)’s GOT TALENT show
features children with special needs (with autism, Down’s
syndrome, and, visual impairments, with intellectual difficulties
and the blind). Special guests are international award winning
singer, Ms Thara Marie Santiago (with autism), and, on the spot
painter, Mr. Chad Stamatelaky, whose painting will be auctioned.
Chad and his wife Melay adopted a son who is a victim of war
from Iran, who is blind and deaf. They opened KIDS HOPE
MINISTRY THAT ADOPTS AND FEEDS ALL KINDS OF
STREET CHILDREN. They currently have 17 poor children
living at home with them. The objectives of the February 11 show
are: 1. To generate awareness for the children with special need to
the general public. 2. To raise funds and to generate sustained
support for the children,

especially for their livelihood projects to make them more
productive members of society”.
When we had spouse Cota Yabut as guest and speaker, she
acknowledged many in our club who financially assisted. Raffy
who was building his financial empire then, PP Esto and Tom, the
father of Chris and his namesake. Chris made his passion to help
these talented kids by convincing IPDG Jun to have the show for
the Discon last year and plenty, including RIDN Raffy paying
good amounts for worthy projects of these kids.
On 11 February at 7:00 p.m. is their show at Valle Verde Country
Club. A Php1,000.00 ticket covers the cost of buffet dinner and the
show. It may be a good gesture to have our sister club members,
and, their team to this dinner. A club sponsored one, or, by groups
of five be sponsored by well meaning Pasig Rotarians.
Incidentally, the fire in the belly of PP Chris shows the Rotary in
him is on high pitch. May those with keener interests in their club
work a win win formula. Can we pray the Our Father more
meaningfully and before we ask for forgiveness, learn to forgive
others?
There is a luxury cruise from Manila to Laoag to Taiwan to
Hongkong and back. IPP Ner is keenly interested. There is no
hidden agenda here but an introductory price of US$500 plus some
costs. Some extension of the fellowship a la Conrad’s birthday
bash may be organized.

Those who fail to plan are invariably planning to fail. Incoming
Prexy Dr Jess showed his plans and discussed to the fullest details.
Many, like former Health Secretary Ike Ona, new transferee
Butch, and, many others volunteered. Wait a minute, increase
membership first.
Special mention to Rtn. Manoj, the prodigal Rotarian who
attended last meeting. He promised to attend regularly from now
on. PP Peping was asking Director Bebert to bring back his dad to
the club. Better sponsor a more dedicated one. In Rotary, the best
is yet to be.

INCOMING ROTARY PRESIDENT CHALLENGES CLUBS
TO MAKE A DIFFRENCE
Rotary International President-elect Ian H.S. Riseley made the
case on Monday that protecting the environment and curbing
climate change are essential to Rotary’s goal of sustainable
service.
Riseley, a member of the Rotary Club of Sandringham, Victoria,
Australia, unveiled the 2017-18 presidential theme, Rotary:
Making a Difference, to incoming district governors at Rotary’s
International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA.
Environmental degradation and global climate change are serious
threats to everyone, Riseley said. “They are having a
disproportionate impact on those who are most vulnerable, those
to whom Rotary has the greatest responsibility. Yet environmental
issues rarely register on the Rotary agenda,” he said.

Environmental degradation is one of the major threats listed by the
UN’s High-level Panel on Threats, Challenges, and Change.
Riseley added, “The time is long past when environmental
sustainability can be dismissed as not Rotary’s concern. It is, and
must be, everyone’s concern.”

The president-elect challenged every Rotary club to make a
difference by planting a tree for each of its members between the
start of the Rotary year on 1 July and Earth Day on 22 April 2018.
Trees remove carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the
air, which slows global warming.
“It is my hope that the result of that effort will be far greater than
the environmental benefit that those 1.2 million new trees will
bring,” Riseley said. “I believe the greater result will be a Rotary
that recognizes our responsibility not only to the people on our
planet, but to the planet itself.”
Securing Rotary’s future
In his address to the 2017-18 class of district governors, Riseley
also urged clubs to improve their gender balance and lower the
average age of their members.
Only 22 percent of Rotary’s members are women, up from 13
percent 10 years ago. At that rate, Riseley said, it will take another
three decades for Rotary to achieve gender parity.
We know that we can do more together than we could ever hope to
do alone.
“Three decades is far too long to wait to achieve a Rotary that
reflects the world in which we live. We need to make it a priority
now,” he said.
Noting that 103 of the 539 incoming governors are women,
Riseley said they are the type of women we need in Rotary,
“leaders who will help Rotary connect with, and represent, and
better serve, all of the members of all our communities.”

Riseley also believes it is imperative that clubs find ways to attract
and engage younger members. Today only 5 percent of reported
members are under 40, and a majority of members are over 60,
Riseley told the audience.
“Consider what Rotary stands to look like 10 or 20 years from
now if we don’t get very serious, very soon, about bringing in
younger members,” Riseley said.
Clubs will make a difference this year through their own decisions,
said Riseley, but it will take teamwork on a global scale to move
Rotary forward and secure its future.
“We know that we can do more together than we could ever hope
to do alone,” he told incoming governors. “I ask you to keep that
spirit of teamwork and cooperation always in your minds and to
take it back with you to your districts.”
