Dear Lord,
We pray for our new members who have given
their classification talks recently, that they may
persevere in attending our weekly meetings so
they may get to enjoy the company of the old-
time members, the education derived from the
guest speakers, the fining moments, and the rest
of the weekly program.

TOP OF THE WORLD
Such a feelin's comin' over me
There is wonder in 'most ev'ry thing I see
Not a cloud in the sky, got the sun in my eyes
And I won't be surprised if it's a dream
Everything I want the world to be
Is now comin' true especially for me
And the reason is clear, it's because you are here
You're the nearest thing to heaven that I've seen
I'm on the top of the world lookin' down on creation
And the only explanation I can find
Is the love that I've found ever since you've been around
Your love's put me at the top of the world
Somethin' in the wind has learned my name
And it's tellin' me that things are not the same
In the leaves on the trees and the touch of the breeze
There's a pleasin' sense of happiness for me
There is only one wish on my mind
When this day is through I hope that I will find
That tomorrow will be just the same for you and me
All I need will be mine if you are here
I'm on the top of the world lookin' down on creation
And the only explanation I can find
Is the love that I've found ever since you've been around
Your love's put me at the top of the world
I'm on the top of the world lookin' down on creation
And the only explanation I can find
Is the love that I've found ever since you've been around
Your love's put me at the top of the world

Pres. Ner P. Laiño
Fellow Pasig Rotarians:
In the board meeting last Tuesday, October 6, 2015, it was
suggested that my president’s message should not contain detailed
reports and it should only be inspirational. In the meantime, I
would like to mention the following:
1. PP Rel paid Orchard Golf Club P7l,000.00 last September
28 when we had the golf tournament. We have, however,
paid this amount to him last October 1st. Thank you, again
PP Rel.
2. Many thanks also to PP Ducky, PP Conrad, PP Topax, PP
Benny and to all those who extended financial and material
support which made our golf tournament a success.
3. Congratulations also to Director Ray Armas. Your son
Attorney Paolo Armas has proved to be a future good
Rotarian after he successfully defended his classification
talk last October 1.
4. WCP Wency Paguiguron of our sister club RC Balayan
will be coming on October 15 to renew our sister club
agreement. He further told me his officers will join him.
As per what was suggested, the financial reports of our club
whenever necessary will have to be printed somewhere in the
Tinig. My final report on this will be submitted sometime in June
2016.

PP Benny P. De Guzman
We had a riotous meeting last week, thanks for the many principal
characters. It started always with Director Ray who could not get
anybody to join him in his community singing. Plus the good defense
of classification by his son, Atty. Paolo, who had many questions
mostly about court matters that he could not find the right answers
too. It is on the shortcomings of the courts that he earns daw, I don’t
know how but if he is earning, so let it be?
The cover of last Sunday’s Panorama had a come on what to do to
be financially secured. It was bannered that well known Financial
Expert, Francisco Colayco, had his premium basics inside the
magazine. He was cited for his various successful books. PP Toti
should know who to tap to publish books that sell. We have two
prized authors in Topax and Alex Lacson.
New Taong Bakal attended the meeting last week and 3 times ROY
Dr. Aga had nothing but praises for his toughness. When I brought
my spouse Pura to our golf tournament, many thought I was doing a
Belle Ermita,i.e., to check Rotarians like Belle Ermita’s Taong Bakal
PP Rhett Ermita.
Goods news to Pasig Rotarians, PP Bobby Paterno would soon join
us again. He has been attending his other chores but when he showed
up at the Phil Cancer Society night two weeks ago, he confirmed all
along that he is fit as a fiddle. No less than Dette confirmed it. Swerte
the other clubs as he would be attending many make-up meetings for
his three months in getting fit in secret quarters, at home lang.
To complete a de Guzman show, cousin in law of PN Aga, a Rotarian
from New Jersey attended our meeting last week. He exchanged
bannerette with WCP Ner. Many are not aware that Bobby’s Dette is

also a better de Guzman who was one of the original Bayanihan
Dancers of PWU where once her illustrious mother was the President.
We just heard the sad news that Rtn. Chony is not hosting, for the
first time in many years, our Christmas party. Ikaw man, if you
prepare for 70 people and only 30 or less would attend, would you
still host? The key is PP Conrad, if we can promise better attendance
and proper time management, baka he would reconsider. Baka lang.
I was called by the former General of Traffic Management, a cousin
of our PP Ducky, that the plan of PP Jing would be reviewed and Jing
would be allowed to make his power point presentation within this
month. Little is Jing aware that if his plans would not get approval he
would be cited for a major traffic violation of delaying the real
solution.
Please do your part, even if it means duplicity of invitation, to invite
spouses of former members who have died. We have some lists as
Chabeng Herrera (of PP Emil), of spouses of Jess Arnaldo, Del Catli,
Zorayda (of Caring Bustamante), of Johnny Alban, of Rene Berroya,
of Jun Santiago, of Lito Santiago, of Ayc Santos, of Serge Javellana,
of Oniot Garcia, of Art Delmendo, of Art Dy, of PP Leo Magtibay, of
Cesar Orosa, of Piling Castillo, of Obet Barreto, of Joe Sarmenta, and
Alon Chung. That means, the rest, we have contacted already or we
have means to do so.
There are very few husbands whose spouses went ahead like PP Kati
delos Reyes’ Fenny, Ernie Zarate’s Charie, Pol Garcia (even before
he joined our club & Ray Armas’ Guing.
Today, is Lechon Day, hosted by PPs Topax & Peping. On their real
birthday, Chinese Taiwan would celebrate their Double Ten as well
as U.P. Los Baños, their Loyalty Day.

ROTARY AND SHELTERBOX SUPPORT SYRIAN
REFUGEES
In Syria, where a civil war has been raging since 2011, more than
6,000 people flee the country every day. As of September, more
than 4.1 million people have become refugees, and 7.6 million
more have been internally displaced.
“The plight of Syria’s refugees is a litmus test for the world's
compassion,” says Rotary International General Secretary John
Hewko. “Rotary members worldwide are profoundly disheartened
by the refugee crisis now unfolding in Syria and other parts of the
world,” which the United Nations has described as the worst in
decades.
“Rotary is following the situation closely,” Hewko says. “We
know our members have an inherent desire to act, to relieve the
suffering and uncertainty that displaced individuals and families
are facing. We call on you to respond as Rotarians have for more
than 100 years: to use your professional skills and acumen,
leverage your connections to other leaders, and mobilize your local
communities to provide the necessary resources and funding to
address the humanitarian crisis.”
Rotary members can donate to the disaster relief efforts of our
project partner ShelterBox. The organization has supported the
Syrian relief effort for close to four years and is working with the
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to distribute
relief materials. ShelterBox is also working with communities in
Greece and parts of Turkey to provide transitional housing and

supplies to displaced people passing through these regions in an
effort to reach other countries in Europe.
Rachel Harvey, a member of a ShelterBox response team that
recently returned from Greece, says Syrian refugees are making
dangerous crossings to the shores of Greece.
As many as 2,000 people arrive daily on Lesbos’ northern
beaches, says Harvey, referring to a Greek island in the Aegean
Sea off the Turkish coast. The trip from Turkey to Greece usually
takes about an hour and a half. “The flimsy rubber dinghies are
invariably overcrowded, and the majority of passengers can’t
swim,” she says.
Harvey adds: "The experience is terrifying. Another trauma added
to the layers that many of the displaced have accumulated through
war in Syria or South Sudan, insecurity in Afghanistan or
Pakistan. One man told me: 'It was a nightmare. I don’t know how
we got through that trip,' ” she says.
Says Hewko: “We appreciate our clubs and members for their
support, helping the millions of displaced people find shelter and
rebuild their lives and communities. Every refugee is in our hearts
and minds.”

Brig. Gen. HERNANDO S J LOPEZ, AFP (Ret)
Our guest speaker was born in Pandacan, Manila. His initial
education was in a public school then at a parochial school. He had
two years of engineering at UST before entering the Philippine
Military Academy. He joined the Philippine Air Force upon
graduation in 1966. He completed his pilot training at the Phil. Air
Force Flying School and was assigned to fly transport aircraft which
gave him the opportunity to visit every part of the country. He
underwent various schoolings in leadership and management both
local and abroad. He was assigned three times in Mindanao, as a
Lieutenant, a Major and finally as a Brig. General just before his
retirement in 1999. He then worked as a Chief Operating Officer
(COO) of a large manufacturing company. After which he rendered
management consultancy services to several companies.
He was a Rotarian of RC Puerto Princesa then transferred to RC
Metro Zamboanga. While in the military service, he received
multifarious medals and awards but most notable and relevant to
today’s occasion are the following :
a. The Most Outstanding Rotarian Award for the year 1998
given by RC Puerto Princesa
b. Plaque of Distinction for the Most Outstanding
contribution in the promotion of Peace in Mindanao
particularly in the province of Basilan, Jolo and
Zamboanga City in 1999, given by RC Metro
Zamboanga.

MARSEILLE
From Marseille Airport we took the Airport-St Charles bus, a
dedicated bus from the Airport that goes to St Charles Station,
Marseilles' central train station; the ride is about 30 mins. St
Charles is the train hub for trains that come and go to and from
France's other provinces, and is also a stop for Marseille's Metro, a
two-line underground subway.
At St Charles' Stn, before proceeding to our hotel, as we shall
spend one night only in Marseille, we already procured our train
tickets for Nice for the following day. The tickets cost 35 Euro
each for the 2:30pm, approximately 150km trip.
Whenever we go to Europe we shun taxis, we always take public
transpo. I find searching for buses, train stations, metro stations
exciting, that's why we never join tour groups. Our hotel in
Marseille is Ibis Styles Castellane (Ibis is a huge chain of 3-star
hotels in Europe, belonging to the Accore Hotels group), walking
distance from the Castellane stop of the Red Line of Marseille's
Metro.
It's easy to go around Marseille with its Metro. Its most famous
point of interest is the Old Port, called Vieux Port, mirroring
Marseille's past glory of being the trading capital of that region in
the Mediterrenean. The Old Port is now a busy huge three-sided
marina for numerous sailboats and yachts, lined in rows side by
side with each other. The three sides of the port is lined with 15th
and 16th century buildings, which gives a magnificent European

French-Mediterreanean view. The fourth side of the marina is the
mouth to the open sea.
Marseille is a tourist destination city like many other European
major cities; one can see hundreds of tourists at the large open
space Square fronting the Port. The city main square is common to
major European cities where visitors converge to enjoy the ancient
architecture and structures. Almost all ground floor of the
buildings surrounding the Square are cafe's and restaurants.
Although mid-September is already the onset of autumn, Marseille
is still hot and warm at mid-day till afternoon.
There's St Agustine Church along the Square, a white-painted I
would say 16th century church, so we checked the schedule of
Mass, unfortunately there was none anymore in that late afternoon
of Thursday, Sept 17. Another attraction of Marseille is the Old
Town, called Le Panier, the old town during the Roman
occupation, still preserved and inhabited.
