August is Rotary Membership and Extension Month! We all are aware August is membership and extension month, as obviously laudable as this is, membership in all its aspects is at the forefront of each and every members’ thinking, especially when the Club has the tall task of inducting 23 new members set by the DG for this year. Membership is crucial for Rotary Club Dhaka as the premier club of the country as it makes the club vibrant and enthusiastic without which the Club cannot meet its aspirations. If aspirations are not met, disenchantment sets in, as there is no reason to attract existing members to continue and new people to join. New members, retention and extension are the most challenging aspects of Rotary as the success in these areas is a measure of both how Rotary is perceived and also the effectiveness with which clubs make themselves an outward looking, integrated part of the broader community. For this he club must optimize the benefits associated with various service projects designed for serving the community with an outward facing for attracting potential members. In the recent years there has been a decline in the membership of the club, which needs to be addressed seriously in order to achieve targeted of membership growth. The club should engage the full potential of the members in the Club programs thus making the members feel valued and involved which will automatically of interest to potential new members. Nothing breeds success like success and the hard work that goes into developing stimulating internal program counter-balancing the time and effort that goes into arranging and following up one off recruitment events. To achieve the membership target the club should be conscious of keeping existing members and attracting new members and it should be done within the day to day, month to month and annual activities. Membership cannot and should not be treated as a separate, isolated entity.

PRESIDENTIAL MESSAGE AUGUST, 2015

One evening, when I came into the office, I said to my father: "It's been a good day today, Dad. We've earned a little more." "Oh," said Dad, "what do you mean?" "Well, I've just been to the station with two boxes of our toy ducks for the Danish Co-op. Normally they get three coats of varnish, but since it's for the Co-op, I only gave them two. So I saved the business a bit of money." He looked at me in dismay. "Gottfried, fetch those boxes back. Unpack them and give the ducks another coat of varnish. You're not going to bed until the work's done – and you'll do it all on your own." There was no arguing with Dad. And it was a lesson for me about what quality meant.

Today, Lego's quality standards are legendary, and its products are the most popular toys in the world: Lego pieces outnumber humans 86 to 1.

We all recognize that this success stems directly from Lego's business practices – its insistence on quality, efficiency, and innovation. I compare this with our efforts in governance and accountability in Rotary, and realize that sometimes we fall short of the standards expected.

The leaders at the Rotary International, zone, district, and club levels have to maintain the highest standards in governance. The RI president and directors must serve the membership in a meaningful manner; zone leaders must deliver on the investment Rotary makes in them; district leaders must provide dynamic leadership in the district and focus on transparency in accounting and timely reporting of financials; and club leaders must adhere to proper reporting functions and get their clubs onto Rotary Club Central.

Just as Christiansen refused to consider sending a lesser product to any of his clients, so should we refuse to consider giving a lesser effort to any of our work. We must always demand the best of ourselves – in our professional lives, and especially in our Rotary work.

For in Rotary, what is our product? It is not wooden ducks or plastic bricks. It is education, water, health,

and peace. It is hope, and it is life itself. For this work, only our best is good enough. I ask you all to

remember this – and to do your very best to Be a Gift to the World.

K.R. "RAVI" RAVINDRAN RI President

In the 1930s, Ole Kirk Christiansen, a Danish carpenter, had a wooden sign hanging on his wall that read, Detbedsteerikke for godt: "Only the best is good enough." Today, Christiansen is remembered as the inventor of Lego, the colorful plastic bricks beloved by children around the world. But in the early days of the Lego Company, its signature product was a wooden duck – one built to the highest standards, out of aged beech, with three coats of clear varnish. Lego's company history tells how Christiansen used his ducks to teach a lesson in quality to his son, Godtfred Kirk:

LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE

Laughter activates the chemistry of the will to live and increases our capacity to fight disease. Laughing relaxes the body and reduces problems associated with high blood pressure, strokes, arthritis, and ulcers. The sound of roaring laughter is far more contagious than any cough, sniffle, or sneeze. It can be a domino effect of joy and amusement! And the good feeling that we get when we laugh can remain with us as an internal experience even after the laughter subsides.

MEMBER BENEFITS PROGRAM UNVEILED AS CONVENTION DRAWS TO A CLOSE

RI President K.R. Ravindran introduced a member benefits program at the 9 June closing session of the 2015 Rotary International Convention, saying that many more hands are needed to continue Rotary’s work around the world.

The program, Rotary Global Rewards, aims to boost membership and enhance member satisfaction. It will debut on 1 July.

“This innovative new program will allow Rotary members to connect with hundreds of businesses and service providers from around the world -- and that number is growing,” said Ravindran. “These establishments will offer Rotarians discounts and concessions on the everyday business that you do. And, in many cases, not only will you benefit, but our Foundation will as well, by receiving a contribution with each transaction.”

The program will include discounts on car rentals, hotels, dining, and entertainment. Discounts on more products and services from companies worldwide are expected to be added throughout the year.

“It will be another way to benefit from being a Rotarian and being part of the Rotary network,” said Ravindran, whose presidential theme for 2015-16 is Be a Gift to the World. “I urge all of you to become a part of that scheme.”

"This was a spectacular event for Rotary in terms of

fellowship, bringing together Rotarians and their

families in one grand open-air venue," says

Vahanvaty. "Rotary's work was showcased across

the racecourse through banners and audiovisuals.

We also obtained immense public relations through

newspapers, radio and

TV covering the event."

Adds Ajay Gupta,

governor of District

3140, "It was a delight

to be with so many

Rotary members and

sing our national

anthem and unfurl

both our nation's flag

and the Rotary flag."

District 3140 spear-

headed the event along with the Rotary Club of

The day at the race-course also included a fashion

"Truly, this has to be one of the most significant

RACE FOR HUMANITY! AN EVENT AT INDIAN RACETRACK

NETS $350,000 FOR SERVICE PROJECTS

Rotary members in India selected a popular

racecourse in Mumbai to promote Rotary to the

tens of thousands of racing aficionados who gather

there daily, raising more than $350,000 for club

service projects in the process.

And between races, spectators at the Mahalaxmi

Race Course were also treated to the Rotary

members' attempt at a Guinness World Record as

650 members, 75 of

them dressed in white

and 575 in black,

formed the shape of a

horse -- with the Rotary

wheel as its eye -- on

the lawn of the

members' area. District

leaders in wes- tern

India chose the Maha-

laxmi Race Course for

their Race for Humanity

event because it draws people from all segments of

Indian society. They reached out to Gulam A.

Vahanvaty, mem- ber of the Rotary Club of Bombay

who also is a member of a track committee, to

facilitate a deal that enabled Rotary clubs to name

seven of the eight races run on 23 November after

their respective service projects.

Leading up to race day, each club had raised at least

$50,000 for the projects, which support literacy,

children's health, and education, among other

causes. Betting on the races was left up to the

Rotary members but was not promoted as part of

the event.

More than 6,000 Rotary members attended the

Race for Humanity event, and club leaders

distributed 1,500 membership kits to race goers. In

addition, Rotary colors and flags lined the paths to

the complex, banners hung in every available

location, and a five-minute Rotary public service

video was shown throughout the event as well as
