OurspeakertonightwasPaulDastoor,Professor in Physics at the School ofMathematical and Physical Sciencesand the director of the Centre forOrganicElectronicsattheUniversityofNewcastle. Paul was accompanied byhiswifeRaniaformerRotaryexchangestudent to Japan sponsored by theRotaryClubofRaymondTerrace.
PaulandhisteamattheUniversityofNewcastleresearchglobalissuesasdiverse as the energy crisis, diabetes and mining safety, Professor PaulDastoorandhis teamareat the forefrontof theemerging fieldoforganicelectronics.Organic electronics dealswith carbon-based electronicmaterials that aresoluble in a variety of liquids. Thismakes themable to bedissolved intosolutions,whichcanbeprinted,paintedorsprayedontodifferentsurfaceswhilststillbeingabletoconductelectricalcharges.Professor Dastoor first began experimenting with the class of plasticsknown as semiconducting polymers in the mid 1990s. By breaking thesemiconducting materials down into tiny particles, Professor Dastoordevelopedamethodofsuspendingtheminwater,whichledtotheconceptofproducingasolarpaintorinkthatcouldbeappliedtosurfaces.Currently in the final stages of perfecting the process of printing water-basedsolarpaint,ProfessorDastoorandhisteamof30researchersattheUniversityofNewcastle'sCentreofOrganicElectronics areabout to startprintinghundredsofmetresofsolarcellsperday.Theyhavealsobecomethe first in theworld tobuildenergy-efficientdevices fromwater-solublesolarpaintmaterials.“PaintonEnergy”The same technology is also being adapted by the team to build a newgenerationofsensorsforarangeofindustrysectorsfromhealthtominingandsafety.Forexample,Paul’steamhasdevelopedasaliva-basedtestofglucoselevelsfordiabeticsufferers,potentiallymakingbloodtestsathingofthepast.Thetestisuptoahundredtimesmoresensitivethancurrentbloodsensorsandcanbebuiltfromaninkjetprinter.Designingrevolutionarydevicessuchassolarpaintandneedle-freeglucosetests,ProfessorDastoor'sinnovationsaresettoimprovetheenvironmentandlivesofcommunitiesaroundtheworld.It is not possible to fully summarise the content of Paul’s outstandingaddress in limited space. PCYC-AGMANDANNUALREPORT
PortStephensPCYCheldtheirAnnualGeneralMeetinglastTuesdaynightinNelsonBay.OurClubhashadaverystrongconnectiontothePCYCoverthepast4yearsprovidingmembersfortheirCommittee(Board).Some of the highlights of the PCYC’s performance during 2015/16 included returning a profit($25,600)forthefirsttimesinceClubManagerMattBrierlytookoverin2013.The Club’s new Commercial kitchen is now open thanks to a very generous grant from theNewcastlePermanentBuildingSociety.NelsonBayRotaryClub’scontributionwasrecognisedattheAGM.Community Services Director Chris Bartlett and member Tim Ireland were elected to theCommittee,alongwithSuperintendentChrisCranerfromthePortStephensLAC,anewfaceontheCommittee.ThePCYCiscurrentlyinnegotiationswithPortStephensCounciltotakeovertheYWCAfacilityinRaymond Terrace. Three other interested parties have also tendered an expression of interest.Memberswillbeupdatedwhenmoreinformationisavailable.
NELSONBAYROTARYFITNESS/EXERCISETRAILUPDATEFollowing thesuccessfulopeningofStage1of thisproject, it ispleasing toreportStage2 iswellunderway.AllthemechanicalequipmentfortheCardio/vascularstationstobeinstalledinNelsonBay(VictoriaStreetEast)andLittleBeachhasbeenorderedwithacompletiondateofmidOctoberscheduled.TheClubhasthe financeavailable, throughourtwosuccessfulgrantapplications,TheRotary Foundation ($20,000) and a Federal Community Grant ($16,000) to fund this stage. ThefinalstageatShoalBaywillhopefullybefundedviaourCharityGolfDaytobeheldon7October2016
SCIENCE&ENGINEERINGCHALLENGEVolunteers are needed for the Science & Engineering Challenge, August 1-5, at the Forum, University of Newcastle. Rotarians assist with the competition events.
