Membership; Unfortunately it looks like we have lost Dave Gentry. The Swap Mart Project is still work in progress and also a reminder about the Karrinyup Golf Day that is coming up. Please ask family members and friends if they can help out over the 4 day period. It is a great opportunity for us with such a pristigeous event. It has already been advertised heavily on the radio as more World Class Golfers are going to attend. All volunteers get a T Shirt, Windcheater and a Cap and the Entry Pass enables us to watch some of the Tournament once we have finished our shifts. Treasurer: Andrew Kininmonth. Software package up and running and accounts all sorted now. Funds from memberships coming in. No questions for Treasurer. Secretary: currently away on leave.

Amendment to the Constitution:

75% of members present are required to accept the amendments to the Constitution of Rotary. Ray Perkins read out the Special Resolution as a motion for this clubs constitution to be amended to incorporate the changes to the Standard Rotary Club Constitution enacted by the 2013 Council on Legislation of Rotary International and that the current Constitution of this club is hereby amended to incorporate all such changes. The full list of amendments were read out and the members were asked to vote. President Norm followed up with asking the members to pass the amendments. All were in favour for the amendments to be made so the motion was carried. Director of Youth Services: Owen Douglas; RYLA is on again this year and we should allow the funds from our budget to support someone this year. There is the Quindanning Weekend Camp which our exchange students have been made aware of on the 22nd. Also there is the Sydney trip which President Norm will liase with them. Owen had Anson over the weekend and had a good time. Anson's Pool skills are improving to a respectable level. Akin was invited to speak to the members. Akin greeted everyone and said that he has been in Australia for 3 weeks now. He celebrated his host mothers birthday on Saturday and had fun. He had a BBQ on Sunday and went to Kings Park.

Page 4: Rotary bulletin 11 2013

Vocational: Neil Cook; please invite any prospective members to come along to the Vocational Visit to Paul Conti’s Winery Evening. BBQ and drinks are available. Raffle: Prize Winners; 1st Prize; Owen Douglas 2nd Prize; Ray Perkins International: Debbie Singh; Burma Children Medical Fund. I have been spending a lot of time in Thailand this year and this organisation looks after many medical conditions. Debbie mentioned about the wheelchair for Kids that donated the wheelchair she could provide for the little girl that needed it so desperately. Debbie has got a 5 minute video which she will play next week. The Burmese people are very frowned on by the Thai people so they really need help in many areas. They have a budget of $31,781.67 USD to establish the Chiang Mai Patient House and so I am asking if our club can donate to this cause. The BCMF patient house is an essential aspect of the services to provide food, a place to stay while undergoing treatment and also a place of refuge where the patients and caregivers can find social and emotional support. The journey across the border to Mae Sot and finally Chiang Mai is long and intimidating to cope with their medical conditions and lack of legal status. This is a very needy cause and the BCMF have proven to have a great track record in treating and looking after these people. Members please consider if we can help with about $3,000.00 Debbie is going there again in 4 weeks time and has had a lot of support from family and friends who have already contributed to this endeavor that she is hoping to raise $10,000.00 in total. President Norm asked for this $3,000 donation to be considered by the members to decide at the next meeting. Sargeants Session: Peter Miskelly jumped at the chance to fill in for Phil Cousins; West Perth supporters, Dockers supporters, Badges and Pins, Rebecca, Andy, Cookie, Paul, and birthdays, Raffle winners, Footy Tipping, Bill Kell, Andy Anderson all contributed. General Business Condensed: Owen mentioned about having a strategic plan for projects for a couple of years and Owen offered to help drive that when we get a full Quorum. It would go around each table and what-ever plans we have can be set out.

With new members they want to know what’s going on and what’s in it for them. We have to set down goal to follow and our vision for the next one or two years. Then when we do get new members we can say well this is what we are doing now, and this is what we are working on, and what we intend to do in the future. Once a project has been mentioned then a fund raising event should be organised to raise money for that project. Bill mentioned about including some Rotary content in the Bullettin. We need to reinforce what we do as Rotarians and possibly every week have a member stand up and speak about a particular aspect of Rotary. Debbie mentioned that Banksia United are really thriving and the project we started 2.5 years ago and the club funds the soccer kids. Every Saturday without fail and through the school holidays we don’t have any breaks just over christmas. We are up at Banksia Grove from 10.00am to 12.00pm sometimes we have a BBQ afterwards. We are looking at having a BBQ each month and would ask for any members to attend the games and BBQ's to see what is going on as this is a long term project with Joe and the volunteers. We will try to get some fixtures and times into the Bulletin for the members. President Norm asked Neil if this could be a vocational meeting when we hand over the T shirts etc. Andrew mentioned and reinforced the fact that we should have all of the fixtures in the Bulletin. President Norm reminded everyone to read the Bulletin and pay attention to the roster and to carry out their full duties. Meeting was closed.

2010: Thank you from BCMF

DEAR FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS OF BCMF,

The last 12 months has been a busy year for Burma Children Medical Fund (BCMF). This year we took on over 130 new chil-dren and special adult cases and closed over 40 cases, some with amazing success stories which we plan to share with you on our new website in the near future.

It has also been a turbulent year in Burma with the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and the November elections. In the aftermath of these elections, an escalation in violence led to an influx of refugees to the border region. Mae Tao Clinic and its partners continue to assist those who have fled and remain unable to return.

Health care in Burma continues to decline. The military regime spends an estimated 79 cents per person a year on health and education – the lowest in South East Asia. By comparison, Thailand spends $89 per person each year. The lack of investment in health care in Burma means the number of people seeking treatment at Mae Tao Clinic increases by around 25 per cent every year.

Children who are seriously ill, but cannot be treated at the Mae Tao Clinic or at the local hospital rely on the Burma Children Medical Fund to raise funds and to navigate the logistical and legal challenges involved in getting them to Chiang Mai, 400km away, for life-saving treatment. In the majority of cases, the children BCMF treats will die if their condition is left untreated. There is no health support for them in Burma and their situation is desperate. Their families bring them to BCMF as a last re-sort.

This year a BCMF patient van departed nearly every week and in 2010 transferred more than 140 people between the Mae Tao Clinic and Chiang Mai (including patients and their carers). The fund also arranged the treatment of one patient in Bang-kok as she was unable to get the specialised care she needed in Chiang Mai. In 2010 BCMF also took on its first case of the blood disease Thalassaemia. BCMF hopes to expand treatment of this disease, prevalent on the border, in 2011.

BCMF could not help these children without the kindness and funds donated by people like yourselves and all the various groups who have supported us since 2006.

On behalf of the children and families who have received your support, the staff of BCMF thank you and wish you a happy and safe 2011.

Best wishes,

Kanchana Thornton (BCMF Program Manager)
