Dear Co workers
in
Christ
We have exciting news from India. From
the Madras
College
of
Evangelism
Peter
Ignatius writes
that the church meeting in the College building is
doing
extraordinarily well. Several
new
families have
been
added. They were expecting
to
start
a new
congregation
in
March. Another group some distance
away
is requesting that a church bestarted among them. The College has
students
who are growing in
their desire
to
serve. Some
of
them
are
leading services
for
two
different language groups attended
by 10
to
20
people
each.
Peter
said
it is all very exciting.
But
we
do
need more
workers. So please
hurry back .
One matter of concernis an accidentPeter and one of the College teachers were in. While they were
stopped
at a red
light
a
tanker truck
ramed
into
them, pushing the
rear door
of the Van in
2-3 feet.
We
praise
God thatneither of them was hurt, buttheVan
required
extensive repairs.
When
we lastwrote wewere
preparing
for the
National Missionary
Convention. It was held in
Wichita andwasa highlight gathering. Wesawmany friends of former days and
made
new friends and
hada wonderful time. During November wehad some speaking engagements and visited some churches
in theBison area.
Two
days before Thanksgiving wehad
about
two feet of snow. Wewere deli^ted to
see the beautiful winter wonderland that we had not experienced since 1974. When weather reports
warned
of icy roads
and many
accidents we nearly warned
David and
family
not
to come as planned.
Instead
we
justlet
them
know what the
conditions
were
and
warned
them
to
drive
carefully. Fortunately
they made
the trip
from Lincoln,
IL and
back
safely.
We
had a joyous Thanksgiving celebration
with
David,
his wife
Glenda,
their son
Dan,
and two other grandsons, JohnMark and Jonathan Paul. It was
wonderful to be together, but the twodaysandnights were much tooshort.
Therewas moresnow duringDecember so we (William & Jean) had our first white Christmas
since the one in
Turkey
enroute to India in our truck-camper in
1974.
Wespentmostof the day home
alone ,
unusual for us. In India there are always worship services on Christmas morning. Then there is
visiting andgreeting and
sharing
homemade
goodies
among theChristian community. Wedidspend some
time with good
neighbors
inthe evening as
they called
us
over
fora
snack. They are
the ones
who
hadlet
us stayin their camper until ourhouse was
vacated. They have
beenso generous in
many ways.
It helped
to ease the disappointment that none of our familywas with us.
Jon Paul
came
bybus
from
Illinois
on
December 28th. David
and Ben
drove
out on the
31st.
They
were
here
to join in
seeing
theNew Year in,
and spend
a
couple
of
days
withus
again.
They all
drovebackto Illinois andwewerealone again. Therewasmoresnow off and on addingto previous snow
that had not all melted. Besides continuingto workon the house wevisitedmorearea churches. During
this time some of the La Crosse Church folk went to Russia to giveBibles, sing and teach.
During February we visited churches, Bible Colleges, retirement homes, classmates and friends
in Oklahoma, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee and Arkansas. Time does not
permit to mention namesof all friends and places we visited. We are so grateful to all who madethat trip
enjoyable and profitable. But we must mention visiting J. Lois Rees. We had good visits with her on two
different days, and werehappy to see the good retirement homeshe is in and see how comfortable and
w el l c ar ed f or she
is . She s t il l
chafes to be
back in India.
March found us back in Bison for a week to take care of a month's mail that had piled up. Urgent
business, bills and thank you notes kept us busy. Then we loaded up the Van and headed out again to
speaking dates in Kansas, Missouri, Illinois and Ohio, then back to Bison. Friends in Canton, OH had
video-taped a T.V. program aboutNoah s
Ark.
They gave us a copy of it and we have shared it with
several
othersduringour
travels.
On that trip we again renewed former friendships andmadenew friends
and told about the work in India in many churches. Thanks to all who made that trip so enjoyable. Mail
was not catching up with us, and there was business to take care of, so we returned to Bison for the last
twoweeks of April. We expect to be in this area throughMay for morevisitingand speaking. We have
already spoken in Dodge City and Bison, and visited Joplin, MO.
All of our familyhave not been together since July, 1970 when David and Glenda weremarried.
Our 50th anniversary is July 12. Henki andMaryEsthers 25th is also in July. Soweare tryingto arrange
a family reunion around that time, or perhaps in August. Paul and Helen are havingfinancial problems
with college and school expenses so don't think they can come. Henki and Mary Esther are planning a
short furlough in July and August, so we hope the rest of the family will be able to gatlier then. Plans are
not final, but St. Louis is fairly central. Henki and Mary Esther were married there in the Ferguson
Church, and ladiesof that grouparewillingto help with a reception. Thehomestead that William andhis
Dad built, and where we were married, has been destroyed, so is
not
available.
More travel is being planned for June and July to visit other friends and relativesespecially son
Charles and familyand very especially our youngest grandson whomwe haven't seen. He l:^ recently
been
diagnosed
as
hearing impaired.
Please pray for
him
and his parents. Wealso
expect
to take part in
V.B.S. activities and attend the North American Christian Convention during this trip.

We

the

and
plans
for the

Weeses. Wehad
good
fellowship with thecongregation ontheLord s day. Our next stop
was
Joliet,
where
wewere guests ofBill
McGilveiy s daughter, Rachel Richey and inily. Then on to
Kenosha,
WI.
Soon
after the
church
was
started there, Jean s father.
Sterling

resident
minister fi:om Dec. 1924 toMay
1926.
This church supported the work in India for many years.
In Buchanan, MIwe visited MotherZoenaRothermel's cousins, the Ashton
family,
andwere able
toget
copies
of
femily
pictures andprinted material on
family history.
Oneofour
projects
isgathering such
information to compQe a history of the Rotheimellives and work. In Erie, PA, thanks to Jean's cousin
Virginia Hill, we alsowere
able
to collect pictures andothervitalstatistical
information
on the Rotheimel
side
of
the
family,
including pictures
of
Staling's Mother,RebeccaGreenRotheimel.
InTonawanda, NYwewereguestsof the KeimethWoods & Carol Losch, and visitedwith Mary

thrill
to visitformercolleagues in India,Donand EleanorDavisin Henrietta, NY. We had
lost track
of
themfor someyearsand itwas sogood to findthem again. Itwas alsoa blessingtoparticipate
in the Faith PromiseRally at the BeaverRd. Church in Rochester, and see them surpass their goal.
We were eagerto reach
Baltimore
areawhere son, Charles, and family live. It was a
thrill
to see
youngest grandson, Daniel, for the first time. And wewereso pleased that he made fiiends with us at once.
Heis only four years old and though he had been fittedfor a hearing aid,he would not keep it in. But he
didmuch better understandingus thanwehad expected. Itwas a realjoy to bewiththese loved ones and
our fewdays passedmuchtoo fast. We (any ofus) never know how long it will be before we will again be
reunited with loved ones, but with us itis almost certain to be several years. But we mustgo on.
Throu^
the years since we went to Madras in 1974, the Laurel Avenue Church in Chesapeake,
VA faithfully supported the work and we were again privilegedto be with them on the morning of June
Btii. The Aubry Piiddy family hosted us. From there we rushed on to Chesterfield, VA where we
had
the
evening program at the Tri-City Church in Hopewell. We were surprised by a reception following the
servicewith a 50th anniversary cake and refreslments in our honor. Billand Ethel Gulick, our hosts and
also former co-workers in India,
had
arranged this.
The next stop was at Roanoke Bible College and the George BonDurants. George's parents had
been longtime fiiends and supporters of the Rothermel work and had saved 'India Christian News' and
personal letters from Zoena over the years. These had later been placed in the College library. Much very
valuableinformationabout the workwas preserved in this collection. Wewere allowedto bring them with
us to make photocopies for future use. We were deli^ted with this privilege.
For many years we have been interestedin the Winston-SalemBibleCollege,so wereglad for the
opportunity to be guests
of
Pres. & Mrs. Kelly and meet some
of
the leaders of that work and see their
fadlities. Also, ever since the 1930swhen Jean'smother visited Mountain Mission School, Jean has desired
to go there. It was good to meet the Swineys, staffand students and to see how much improvement has
been made in the intervening years.
Lexington,KYwas the next stop with William's brother, Clyde, and
family.
He also has a new
grandchild we
had
not seen before. We worshipped with the brethren, and also visited the retirement home.
Before we left the area we were able to visitbriefly with Seth & Betty Adamson, longtime fiiends who have
recently moved to the Berea Church. Then on to Cincinnati as guests
of
the Noel Kirks during the VBS with
LocklandChristian Church, also a longtirne supporter. Next we went to Villa Grove, IL as guests of the
HowardAlbms and for services on June 27th. Doris Large treated us to lunch. Then to Griggsville for the
evening Fathers' Day program, and to spend the night witii Gordon Smith, whose home is always open for
us. Then again to Bison to catch up on business before the NACC.
John & Debbie Leonard were our hosts in Florissant, MO during the Convention. We were
blessed by the presence
of
Peter Ignatius, also a guest m this home, so we rode back & forth to the
Convention together. Also our daughter, Mary Esther, had arrived from Belgium with son James and a
fiiend and they stayed just down the street, thus we could be with them some at the Convention. We
thoroughly enjoyed the Convention. Sermons, congregational
singing,
specials, workshops, and seeingso
many fiiends and makingnew ones are all part of the blessed memory. Afterwards Mary Esther, James &
the fiiend camebackwithus to Bison. MaryEsther sorted and packedor disposedof thingsshe had stored
here for 20years ormore. She had engagements so they were on their way after a couple
of
days.
Our next trip took us to Lake James near Angola, IN for the School
of
Missions. Enroute we were
dinner guests of the Kenneth Cragos, FA for Leonard Thompsons, colleaguesin Madias. At Lake James
we had a spiritually refreshing time, not only to show and tell about our worl but also learning from
others, and enjoying the fellowship. We werehouseguests
of
the Conrad Schaeffers. When we were ready
to leave the areawe planned to stop emoute to visit fiiends who had been Meimonite missionaries near us
in India We were sad to leam that Ed had died a few days before. But his funeral was to be on Aug. 1.

ThenPaulcamehome to Bisonwithus for a few days. He'll be
visiting
churches for a couple of months before returningto Argentina.
William and Paul had a busy time learning from and teaching each other what they knew about
variouscomputerprogramsand uses. Then againwe loadedup and took Paulbackto Pittsfield. Wegot to
be withMaryEstheragainfor awhile as she came to get Paul to drivewith her to Cincinnati. Paul left her
there with fiiends who would take her on her way toward the East coast to meet her new FA, and from
there fly back to Belgium. Paul will continue to use the car she had been using until he returns to
Argentina. Meantime,
William
and Jean went on to
Indiana
to deliver some of Mary

to

At the

some information was

about

Mary.
(Mary had spent time in Madras, India whilewe werethere, and had been our
house guest and traveling companion back in the 1970s.) After Sunday morning at the Cumberland
Christian Churchwe hurried back to Pittsfield to hear son, Paul, preach.
A fewyearsago brotherClydehad communicated witha Rolandrelative inNewLondon, MO,the
area from which the Roland clan comes. Goldena had traced the femilyand had much information typed
up on the family. We spent a couple
of
hours with her and were also able to photocopy some
of
her
material. We found the cemeterywhere several ancestors are buried, and found theirgraves. Our last night
on the road was spent with Mike Curtice and family at Centralia, MO. Mike had been speaker at an All
IndiaConvention the lastyear we were in Madras, and had been our house guest duringthat time. We have
stayedwith them severaltimesto breakjoumey whilepassing through the area. Nowwe are backin Bison
_again to catch up on business.

(on Nov. 3rd and 4th) the 50th anniversary reunion

However, our projectedyearly budget expenses are stillabout 5,000 short (about $425per month). We
request your prayers that this amount willbe forth-coming before we return.
Thank you all again for your prayer support, financial support,
