Telling about our Orissa t r ip in our las t l e t t e r took so much space thatwe didn ' t get to te l l you about the special visitors we had in January. The

Lee Turners have been special friends of ours fo r many years, tfe have visitedthem many times in the U S. and Pakistan; and have t r ied to get them to v i s i tus in India during one of t h e i r t r ip s to Pakistan, where they v i s i t Christ iansand churches of their previous labors. Finally, last July, we got word fromLee that he was planning a t r ip out this way during December He finally gothere January 7th. along with Jim Willoughby of Cincinnati. They arec o - o f f i c e r s in IDES and were t rave l ing in tha t connection, too. Their v i s i twa s a r e a l boos t to our morale i n more ways than one. The l o ca l KududandChurch enjoyed Lee 's preaching in Urdu; C.T.I, students enjoyed his discuss ionson various Bible subjects . Two days before they a r r ived ou r water pump went onthe blink. We thought. Oh what a time for i t to g iv e t ro ub le But surely th eLord had th e timing a ll worked out. William was dreading th e big job ofpul l ing the two pipes out of the well and r epa i r ing the foo t valve. With four

e x t r a s trong an d wil l ing hands th e r epa i r was done e a s i l y an d in record t ime.I t seems l ike February ha s been a month of bad happenings. Last month wementioned tha t two new s tuden ts had come. When Fulkuwar was h er e b ef or e we hadsent him for a checkup; bu t somehow the report got misplaced a t thehospital . Then they l e f t so no thing more was done. He i s s t i l l very much a suspect, so we sent him again for an X-ray. Sure enough he has very badly. He is now on a series of injections and oral medicines which we hope willc l e a r h im up .

One day Ishwari, the TI pr inc ipa l , sent word that he wouldn't be able toteach h is c la ss es . He had fallen on some loose bricks at their new house andinjured his foot. We suggested he should have an X-ray bu t he thought i t wasjust a bruise. After hobbling around for more than a week without i t gettingbetter he go t an X~ray which revealed a fracture; so now 'h e i s In a cast .

    Fortunately he is able to get around and take care of most of his work--evenr i d e s r i d e s , h i s b i c y c l eThen one evening about 10:00 three young men of the church came with a

    note from Ishwari. I t was a request fo r William to take the ambulance/van toBai.thalpur, 15 miles south, to get his son Jayant, who had been in an accident.Jayant and another young man had been visi t ing a Christian Fair. They werer id ing a motor cyc le when a drunken d r i v e r of a Jeep h i t them. I t Cook a loCof time to get them released from th e local hospi tal , where they had beent r e a t e d i n i t i a l l y . Then we ha d to make a po l ice repor t of t he a cc id en t. I t wasabout 2 a.m. when we f ina l ly got back to Bilaspur and admitted Jayant in th elocal government hospital. His companion stayed a t his home in Baithalpur.Jayant had a leg wound tha t required s t i t c h e s , and an ank le f r a c t u r e . Now he s i n a c a s t , t o o .

    A couple of days a f t e r Jayant was admitted in the local hospi ta l we wentto v i s i t him. We noticed an unusual crowd of people, and a l o t of pol ice . I ttu rn ed ou t Chat a murder vic t im and an i n j u red person had been taken to th ehospi ta l . Then we learned t ha t the murder had taken place j u s t outside ou rcompound wall in Kududand Village. I t was a l l th e r e su l t of a long s tandingfeud between a couple o f groups .

    A fe w days l a t e r we were v i s i t i n g Jo se s Kangaloo in th e MissionH o s pi ta K f or m e rl y D i s ci p le s >. an d learned t h a t another in jured in the Xududandfighting had been taken there. His enemies tr ied to get in there to k i l l himso both hospitals were being guarded by th e police. Joses was in th e hospitalfo r a tonsi1lectomy. He i s home now an d mending slowly, but i s having to missa l o t o f h i s t each ing an d t r a i n i n g c l a s s e s . He te ac he s in th e S chaefe rMemorial Primary School, and i s taking the government teacher- t ra in ing course.

April was the big day for the Institute studentsthe day they had been workingthree years to attain. Following the usual Sunday School classes, Williamled the worship service .in which all of the men students took part. Some read scripturesand le d in prayer. One le d the observance of Che Lord s Supper and th e collect ion oft i t h e s and o ff e r in g s . O thers serv ed as deacons.

Abhimanyu Bhoi, a 1985 graduate, preached the graduation sermon. Abhimanyu hasbeen leading the work of three churches in Che Raipur area s ince his graduation. Hebrought a ch a l l en g i n g message based on Romans 12:1.

Ishwari Lai, our principal, introduced the students by te l l ing a l i t t l e about theirbackgrounds. The Getters were able Co attend the service so Bernel delivered the chargeto the students. Jean handed out Che certificates and commendation le t te rs , and gave aspec ia l g i f t of books to each s tuden t . The women received a two volume s e t on HomeScience, and a se t of booklets from Ralph Harter. The men got a new Bible, a TopicalBible Concordance and a Bible Dictionary. These last three were purchased with a gif tof money from Brother Jim Willoughby, which he lef t with Rolands during his visi t inBi laspur l a s t Jan u a ry.

About 5 p.m. Sunday evening we headed for Raipur and Bhi la i . There were tworeasons fo r making that t r ip . One, we took Luka and Balwant fo r a doctor s checkup:two, th e Matador needed to be serviced before making th e t r ip to Mussoorie. To avoidthe middle-of-the-day heat we have had temperatures up to 117 degrees already) we

decided to stay over night in Bhilai where the servicing is done.We

had expected theVan to be ready by 4:30 p.m. Monday as at other times. They were so busy that i twasn t f in ished unti l about 9 p.m. Jean didn t get to check with the doctor aboutLuka s and Balwant s treatment as she had wanted to do. Therefore, we didn t get backto B ila sp ur un t i l about midnight.

Then came two days of packing and gett ing ready fo r the bi g t r i p l Again, toavoid the heat , we decided to travel at night and sleep and rest in hotels during themiddle of the days. We lef t Bilaspur Thursday evening at 9 p.m. The first night wasdriving mostly through th e forest area west of Bilaspur. We were t reated to the excitement of seeing some wild l i fe : a sloth bear dead), several deer, peafowl, rabbitsand lots of birds af ter day l igh t . We came within a foot of hit t ing a full antlered ,spotted deer. Three doe were standing by th e side of th e road, blinded by th e Van

l ights. We stopped to watch them. Soon they very hesitatingly moved across in frontof us and ra n into th e forest . Just as we s tar ted up we saw another movement a t th eroadside and a male darted across in f ront of us. I f William h a d n t braked hard wew o u l d h a v e t h i m

F r iday we were no t ab le to f in d a h o t e l u n t i l around noon so we had some ho tdriving to do. The hotel was just a third or fourth class lodge with only a ceilingfani The next two days, though, we were able to ge t hotels in Gwalior and Delhi, soslept and r es te d w el l. We stopped for diescl one place Sunday morning early and noticedtha t a front t i r e was going f l a t Fortunately a repa i r place was close by so th erepair jo b wasn t much trouble at a l l Between Delhi and Mussoorie we go t caughtin a very bad dust storn.
