IARC CLASSIFIES RADIOFREQUENCY ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDSAS POSSIBLY CARCINOGENIC TO HUMANS

Lyon,France,May31,2011-TheWorldHealthOrganization/InternationalAgencyforResearch

onCancer(IARC)hasclassifiedradiofrequencyelectromagneticfieldsaspossiblycarcinogenic

tohumans(Group2B),basedonanincreasedriskforglioma,amalignanttypeofbraincancer,

associatedwithwirelessphoneuse.

Overthelastfewyears,therehasbeenmountingconcernaboutthepossibilityofadverse

healtheffectsresultingfromexposuretoradiofrequencyelectromagneticfields,suchasthoseemittedbywirelesscommunicationdevices.Thenumberofmobilephonesubscriptionsis

estimatedat5billionglobally.

TheIARCMonographWorkingGroup,consistingof31scientistsfrom14countries,was

convenedtoassessthepotentialcarcinogenichazardsfromexposuretoradiofrequency

electromagneticfields.Theydiscussedthepossibilitythattheseexposuresmightinducelong-

termhealtheffects,inparticularanincreasedriskforcancer.Thishasrelevanceforpublic

health,particularlyforusersofmobilephones,asthenumberofusersislargeandgrowing,

particularlyamongyoungadultsandchildren.Internationalexpertssharedthecomplextaskof

tacklingtheexposuredata,thestudiesofcancerinhumans,thestudiesofcancerin

experimentalanimals,andthemechanisticandotherrelevantdata.

Thedatashoweda40%increasedriskforgliomasinthehighestcategoryofheavyusers

(reportedaverage:30minutesperdayovera10-yearperiod).

DrJonathanSamet(UniversityofSouthernCalifornia,USA),overallChairmanoftheWorking

Group,indicatedthat"theevidence,whilestillaccumulating,isstrongenoughtosupporta

conclusionandthe2Bclassification.Theconclusionmeansthattherecouldbesomerisk,and

thereforeweneedtokeepaclosewatchforalinkbetweencellphonesandcancerrisk."

IARCDirectorChristopherWild,"itisimportantthatadditionalresearchbeconductedintothelong-term,heavyuseofmobilephones.Pendingtheavailabilityofsuchinformation,itis

U. S. PRESIDENTS CANCER PANEL EXPRESSES CONCERN

The2009U.S.PresidentsCancerPanel-Thepanelpointedtocellphonesandotherwireless

technologiesaspotentialcausesofcancer.Initsrecommendations,thepanelstated:

Methodsforlong-termmonitoringandquantificationofelectromagneticenergy

exposuresrelatedtocellphonesandwirelesstechnologiesareurgentlyneededgiventheescalatinguseofthesedevicesbylargerandyoungersegmentsofthepopulation

andthehigherradiofrequenciesnewerdevicesproduce.

"Theincreasingnumberofknownorsuspectedenvironmentalcarcinogenscompelsusto

action,eventhoughwemaycurrentlylackirrefutableproofofharm,"Lefall,whoischairofthe

panel,saidinastatement.

Anothersensitiveissueraisedinthereportwastheriskofbraincancerfromcellphones.

Scientistsaredividedonwhetherthereisalink.Untilmoreresearchisconducted,thepanel

recommendedthatpeoplereducetheirusagebymakingfewerandshortercalls,usinghands-freedevicessothatthephoneisnotagainsttheheadandrefrainingfromkeepingaphoneon

abeltorinapocket.

Evenifcellphonesraisetheriskofcancerslightly,somanypeopleareexposed

Cell phone radiation affects childrens brains more than adults brains

Children,however,arenotlittleadultsandaredisproportionatelyimpactedbyallenvironmental

exposures,includingcellphoneradiation.Infact,accordingtoIARC,whenusedbychildren,the

averageRFenergydepositionistwotimeshigherinthebrainand10timeshigherinthebone

marrowoftheskull,comparedwithmobilephoneusebyadultsitisessentialthatanynew

standardforcellphonesorotherwirelessdevicesbebasedonprotectingtheyoungestandmost

vulnerablepopulationstoensuretheyaresafeguardedthroughouttheirlifetimes.Dr.Robert

ThepublishedstudyExposureLimits:Theunderestimationofabsorbedcellphoneradiation,

especiallyinchildren,(Gandhietal,2011)notesthattheindustry-designedprocessforevaluating

microwaveradiationfromphonesresultsinchildrenabsorbingtwicethecellphoneradiationtotheir

heads,uptotripleintheirbrainshippocampusandhypothalamus,greaterabsorptionintheireyes,

andasmuchas10timesmoreintheirbonemarrowwhencomparedtoadults.

Amajorstudyfoundan8foldincreaseinbraintumorsin20-29yearoldsafteronly5yearsofcell

phoneuse(Hardelletal,2004).Childrenandteenswillhavealifetimeofexposure;a2011Pew

ResearchStudyfoundthat8outof10teenssleepwiththeirphonesundertheirpillows.

IFWEDONTTAKEACTIONNOWTOINFORMCITIZENSABOUTTHEKNOWNFACTSOFPOSSIBLE

HEALTHRISKSANDABOUTWAYSTHEYCANSAFELYUSETHEIRCELLPHONES,WECOULDBE

FACINGAPUBLICHEALTHEPIDEMICTHATISUNIMAGINABLEINTERMSOFFUTUREECONOMIC

2012)

Forchildren,thosewhobeganusingmobilephonesasteenagershave fourtofivetimesgreaterriskofdevelopingmalignantbraintumorscomparedto

thosewhodidnotusephonesattheseages.

Formenwhowishtobecomefathers,thosewhousetheircellphones4hours

perdayhavebeenfoundtohavehalfthespermcountofnon-users.

Forthedevelopingfetus,prolongedcellphoneuseorplacingthecellphonein

standbymodenearthefetussignificantlyincreasestheriskoflearning

problemsandmaypresentotherdangerstodevelopment.

Otherserioushealthproblemssignificantlyassociatedwithcellphoneusage

include:acousticneuroma,eye,breast,salivarygland,rectal,testicularcancer,

prostatecancer;short-termmemoryloss,sleepandattentiondisturbances,

headache,hearinglossandcognitiveimpairments.

Manypublishedstudiesoverthepast20yearshaveshownDNAdamageand

disruptionofthebloodbrainbarrieratlevels500timeslowerthantheU.S.

federalexposurelimit.

UsingaCellPhoneAgainsttheBodyExposestheUsertoMicrowaveRadiation

thatExceedstheFCCSafetyLimit

Mostpeople,especiallychildrenandyoungadults,carryandusetheirphonesdirectlyagainsttheir

bodies.Consumersdonotknowthatusingacellphonewhileinashirtorpantspocket,ortuckedintoawaistbandorbra,isapotentiallyunsafewaytouseacellphone;warningsarehiddeninthe

legalfineprintofmanualsandonmanufacturerwebsiteswheretheyarenotbeingseen.

TheFCCs16yearoldobsoletecellphoneradiationtestingstandardsdontrequiremanufacturersto

testforexposurelevelsdirectlyagainstthebody.Therefore,thosewhousephonesagainsttheir

bodiesareexposedtomicrowaveradiationlevelswhichexceedtheU.S.federalsafetylimit.

Thiswasconfirmedinthe2012GovernmentAccountabilityOffice(GAO)studywhichstated,

Someconsumersmayusemobilephonesagainstthebody,whichFCCdoesnotcurrentlytest,

andcouldresultinRFenergyexposurehigherthantheFCClimit.

Studiesshowreducedfertilityformenwhocarryandusecellphonesintheirpockets;breastcancer

surgeonsarereportingunusualbreasttumorsinyoungwomenwhocarrytheirphonesintheirbras.

YaleUniversityrecentlyreleasedresultsfromastudythatconcludedthat exposuretoradiation

fromcellphonesduringpregnancywasfoundtoaffectthebraindevelopmentofoffspringresulting

inhyperactivityandotherbehavioralabnormalities.

Citizensarenotbeingwarnedofthepotentialhealthrisksfromwearingandusingcellphones

againstthebody;peoplehavetherighttoknowthefactsandsuggestedsafeuseinstructionsthat

arebeinghiddeninthefineprintofcellphonemanuals

TherecentJuly2012GAOreportaffirmedthatcarryingorusingacellphonedirectly

againstthebodyresultsinradiationexposurethatmayexceedtheFCCssafetylimits.

ManufacturersAreDeceptivelyHidingConsumerRadiationExposureWarnings

EVERYU.S.cellphonemanufacturersengagesintheindustry-widepracticeofdeceptively

hidingconsumersafedistancedisclosuresintechnicallanguage,printedinfineprintand

locatedinsectionsoftheuserguidewhereaconsumerwillrarelyseethem.Manyofthemanufacturersnolongerincludethemanualinthepackaginganditmustbedownloaded.

1.iPhonewarningwhichappearsintheusermanualinprintbarelylegibletothenakedeye,

muchsmallerthan#8fontshown.NOTE:RECENTLYAPPLESTOPPEDDISTRIBUTINGMANUALS

"iPhone's SAR measurement may exceed the FCC exposure guidelines for body-worn operation if

positioned less than 15 mm (5/8th inch) from the body (e.g.; when carrying iPhone in your pocket)......

When using iPhone near your body for voice calls or for wireless data transmission over a cellular

network, keep iPhone at least 15 mm (5/8th inch) away from the body, and only use carrying cases, belt

clips or holsters that do not have metal parts and that maintain at least 15 mm (5/8th inch) separation

between iPhone and the body."

2.FineprintwarningfoundintheBlackBerryTourusermanual,buriedinthebackofthe

pamphletundercomplianceinformation:

Use hands-free operation if it is available and keep the BlackBerry device at least 0.98 in. (25 mm)

peoplehavebecomeregularusersofcellphones,with66%ofallU.S.

childrenacquiringacellphonebeforetheageof7and87%ofteenssleeping

withthemonundertheirpillows.

Citizens could be better informed about the risks of mobile phone

useThere is sufficient evidence of risk to advise people, especially children,

not to place the handset against their heads: text messaging, or hands-free kits

lead to about ten times lower radiation levels, on average, than when the

phone is pressed to the head. Governments may also wish to label mobile

handsets as a possible carcinogen, in line with the IARC decision.

(ClevelandClinic:Agarwaletal,2008)FertilityandSterility-Conclusion:Useofcellphones

decreasethesemenqualityinmenbydecreasingthespermcount,motility,viability,and

MYTH:Theoverwhelmingmajorityofstudiesthathavebeenpublishedinscientificjournalsaroundthe

worldshowthatwirelessphonesdonotposeahealthrisk.

FACT:Whenoneremovestheindustry-fundedstudies,theoverwhelmingweightoftheevidenceshowsthereisasignificantproblem.Thereareover1000peerreviewed,publishedpapersshowing

harmfulbiologicaleffectsfromthemicrowaveradiationexposuresuchasthatfromcellphones.

MYTH:Ifcellphoneswerecausingbraintumors,withsomanypeopleusingthem,weshouldbeseeing

anincreaseinbraintumorincidence,andwearenot.

FACT:Thereisalonglatencyperiodforbraintumorsfrom5toaslongas50years.Cellphoneshave

onlybeenwidelyusedintheU.S.for2decades.Despitethis,arecentlyreleasedstudy(Zadaetal,

2012)showsanincreaseinbraintumorsin3majorcancerregistriesintheUnitedStates.Theincrease

seenisinthefrontalandtemporallobes,the2regionsclosesttowhereacellphoneistypicallyheld.

MYTH:TheWorldHealthOrganization(WHO)classifiedcellphoneradiationexposureasa2Bpossible

carcinogenputtingitinthesamecategoryaspickledvegetablesandcoffee.

FACT:Thisistrue.SpecifictechniquesoffermentingAsianpickledvegetableshavebeenshownto

causelethalesophagealcancer.Studieshaveshownthatheavycoffeedrinkingislinkedtobladder

cancer.Byridiculingthesefindings,theindustryhopeswewillignorethetruththattheWHO

classifiedmicrowaveradiationexposurefromcellphonesinthesameriskcategoryasDDTandlead.

MYTH:TheWHO,NCI,FCC,andACSsaycellphonesaresafe.

FACT:TheseagenciesdoNOTdeclarethatcellphonesaresafe.Theysaythereisinconclusiveevidence

andthatmoreresearchisneeded.TopscientistswithintheU.S.NationalCancerInstitute(NCI),theFDAandtheSurgeonGeneralinsistuponundeniableproofofharmbeforetakinganyaction.Aswith

manycancers,wemaynothaveundeniableprooffordecades.

OTHERFACTSTHECELLPHONEINDUSTRYDOESNOTWANTYOUTOKNOW:

Themicrowaveradiationexposurefromcellphoneshasbeenshownbymanyindependent

studiestodamageDNAanddisruptthebloodbrainbarrieratlevels500timesbelowtheFCC

federalexposurestandards.

DuetoindustrypressureandinfluenceinCongress,cellphoneswereallowedtobemarketedin

the1990swithnopre-marketsafetytesting-inspiteofKNOWNhealthhazardsfromexposuretomicrowaveradiationbaseduponmilitarystudiesfromthe1950sand1960s.

The2012GovernmentAccountabilityOffice(GAO)reportdeterminedthatthe16yearoldFCC

testingproceduresdonotprotectusersfromexposuretothemicrowaveradiationemissions

fromcellphoneswhichareclassifiedasapossiblecarcinogenbytheWorldHealthOrganization.

Noinsurancecompanywillissueliabilityinsurancetothetelecomindustry.
