A Woman’s Right to Know

In this Resource Directory you will find a list of Texas agencies and organizations that may be able to help you with financial and health care services. These resources can help you during your pregnancy and childbirth and help your newborn baby and children as they grow.

The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) does not endorse nor recommend any specific agency. This directory of organizations is provided to help you find services near you that meet your and your family’s needs.

How to use the Woman’s Right to Know Resource Directory:

1. Look for the county where you live or the county where you would like to receive services.

2. Look for the type of agency you need.

3. Call one of the agencies listed, and tell them what you need.

4. If they are not able to help you, ask them whom you should call.

You may also call 2-1-1 Texas, a toll-free, 24-hour telephone number, to get a list and description of agencies near you, the services they offer, and information about how to contact them. Dial 2-1-1 or 877-541-7905, or visit www.211Texas.org.

Many people across the state can help you. They will answer your questions or tell you whom to call. Remember: Keep asking questions until you get the help you need.

After you give birth, if you find that being a parent is too hard, you or the baby’s father can leave your baby with an emergency care provider. The baby must appear to be under 60 days old. You do not have to return for the baby, and you will not be charged with a crime if the baby is not hurt. This is called the “Baby Moses/ Safe Haven” law. Emergency care providers include emergency medical services stations, fire stations and hospitals.

You should also talk to someone if you feel weighed down about being a parent. There is help available.

The CSHCN Services Program at DSHS helps children with special health care needs and people of any age with cystic fibrosis. The program helps clients with their:

Maternity homes serve pregnant women with a broad range of services, regardless of whether or not an adoption is planned. Texas does not regulate maternity homes.

These private agencies provide pregnancy counseling and support services. Texas does not license pregnancy care centers.

Women, Infants, Children Services (WIC) Supplemental Nutrition Program

DSHS contracts with agencies and organizations to provide services under the WIC Program. WIC provides nutrition education, nutritious foods, referrals to health and human services, breastfeeding support and immunizations at some clinics. Clients receive individual nutrition counseling and nutrition classes. Many clinics offer classes especially for children.

The directory also includes state agencies that offer sonogram services at no cost and do not affiliate with, refer to or provide abortion-related services.
