2014-15 Accomplishments by Camden Intermediate School Special Education:

Students went on a field trip to practice math skills at the grocery store by planning a meal for Thanksgiving with their parents

Fiesta CHRISTMAS with Global Awareness

Students participated in Special Olympics

Students attended an “etiquette” luncheon at The Pines after Special Olympics to practice real world etiquette, manners, and ordering from a menu

Students took swimming lessons at the Elizabeth City YMCA 4th Grade:

All 4th Grade Science classes participated in the annual NC Soybean Poster Contest

Field Trip to Arts of the Albemarle to see the Center Players perform “”Bringing Down the House”

Math manipulatives, geo boards, and real-life hallway shapes made 4th Grade Math fun

Famous people presentations with PowerPoints 5th Grade”

Field Trip to Jennette’s Pier

Students learned about Camden County government and participated in a mock trial with District Attorney Andrew Womble

Guidance groups went on a scavenger hunt to locate building resources

Had a hands-on module called “Pump it Up” through Port Discover, and tied this curriculum to Walking Classroom, body systems and heart health

Crime Scene Investigation using inference

Students shared information and original stories about the Underground Railroad to Kindergarten, 1st Grade and 2nd Grade students at Grandy Primary School

Field Trip to see Center Players perform “Legally Blond, Jr.” 6th Grade:

Toni Dupree and Lori. Worthington attended a Holocaust workshop at the Museum of the Albemarle

Toni Dupree received a grant to create a “Holocaust Book Library” so that her students could check out high-interest books in her classroom

Students competed in the Camden Women’s Club Writing Contest. Shane Nadj won 1st place in the Short Story Division and competed at District. Erin Wooten won 1st place in Poetry and also competed at District.

Toni Dupree and Lori Worthington created a reading contest to encourage students to go beyond the two-books-each, nine week requirement. An AR Party was given for students that met their computer calculated AR growth goal.

Language Art students researched famous African American scientists and inventors in their Science class and presented a report as two-student teams. They are also researched famous African American authors and wrote about them for their Language Arts class.

Martin Van Buren conducted free Math tutoring after school, once a week for several weeks for his Math students.

Toni Dupree also tutored 6th Grade Language Arts students once a week for six weeks after school, when Martin Van Buren’s tutoring sessions ended.

Toni Dupree’s class learned about the Holocaust. They are read and discussed the book “The Devil’s Arithmetic” as a class project.

Field trip to the Virginia Air and Space Museum

Students heard a presentation by Donna Washington, Storyteller. She was awesome

Hands-on Science activities such as cow eye dissections, 3D plant models and school-wide recycling programs

Specials Teachers:

The 5th Grade Christmas Play was fantastic and well attended by the community. Kudos to Ellen Ferebee and Ellen Blaisdell

A fantastic job at the 6th Grade Winter Band Concert. Great job by Rose Lee

PE Teachers have been utilized many of the resources provided by the PEP Grant and incorporated them into their classrooms.

Special thanks to Ellen Blaisdell for her leadership in the First Annual 6th Grade “Cookies and Canvases” (38 students attended)

School Nurse:

Laura Watson attended a Sickle Cell Disease Symposium in October 2014

Laura Watson attended a Youth Mental Health First Aid workshop on January 15, 2015

Judy Coppersmith and Laura Watson attended the CHKD Pediatric Chronic Illness Conference on February 7, 2015, which covered a variety of pertinent health issues.

More staff than ever are trained in the use of emergency epinephrine (in case of anaphylaxis) in order to meet the new state requirements regarding the availability of epinephrine in schools

The nurses coordinated the Mobile Dentist Unit this year, through SMILE, NC for Grandy Primary School, Camden Intermediate School and Camden Middle School. This is the first year we have worked with SMILE, NC and it was very successful. Students were provided with dental screenings, x-rays, fillings and other restorative procedures

37 students were seen- all had x-rays and cleanings

86 students had restorative procedures such as fillings and extractions

Our school nurses provided preceptorships for student nurses from College of the Albemarle this past year. We will continue to do so in the future

Guidance:

Guest speakers spoke to all students of Camden Intermediate School on Bullying Prevention and CyberBullyng Prevention

Sue Walker attended the NC School Counselor Conference

Parrish Griffin, Angela Cobb, Sue Walker and many teachers and staff performed at the First Annual “Our School Rocks” Concert for Bullying Prevention that was held for students in Camden Intermediate School

Participation in the Kindness Revolution

Program for 6th Grade on CyberBullying and Social Media Awareness

PTO:

CIS PTO is revived and strong! Hot Dog Open House on September 16, 2014 was sponsored and very well attended

Organized a Food Drive- students collected food and the winning classes were awarded

Supported Brain POP, Edmentum Study Island Benchmarks, and Staff Luncheon

Sponsored two successful Socials

Landscaping the School’s front flower beds in the Fall and Spring

Provided products for SIT Team Recognition, Volunteer Appreciation and Teacher Appreciation Week

Took 18 staff members to the Scholastic Book Warehouse Sale. The staff filled 20 boxes of books to bring back to Camden Intermediate School Classroom Libraries

Staff/Community/Other:

Several Science Teachers participated in training on Orienteering

On Early Release Days, staff development occurred in our own backyard- Low Ropes Course, Reading Eggs

Team of teachers went to Co-Teaching Training Modules in Plymouth and at the Department of Public Instruction

Cindy Spruill organized the distribution of Math Multiplication Cards from Lynn Merritt of Nationwide Insurance and Jesse Carden of Precision Printing

Joyce Gallop was named Camden Intermediate School Teacher of the Year

Angela Cobb, Rachel Joyner, Melissa Harnly participated in sessions at NCCAT in the last 12 months

Partnership was formed with Church of the Redeemer. Angela Cobb visited their congregation and described some of the accomplishments and needs for the School. The Church donated many Wish List items, and is now moving forward on setting up a tutoring program

Staff development at each staff meeting concerning technology and integration, including Piktochard, The Walking Classroom, Orienteering and Mathquiz.org

Every Math teacher, John Corcoran, and Nicole Reaves have published two math tests and shard with the world to use in other classrooms. We are currently in the process of developing key words for work problems, and are hoping to make posters to be displayed in our Math classrooms

Algebra I Team placed 2nd in Regionals

Dominique Dixon placed 1st in the Pencil Drawing Category for the GFWC District Festival

Daniel Nadj placed 1st in Individual Regionals and 8th in the State Math I Competition

Alyssia Bartlett placed 1st at Busch Gardens

Haley Loyd placed 1st in the Knights of Columbus State Free Throw Competition

Camden Middle School Math students placed 3rd at the Women of Math Competition

Daniel Nadj and William Brickhouse were selected to participate in the All District Band

Zechariah Hilton was selected to participate in the All District Jazz Band

The Camden Middle School FFA placed 1st at Federation and 4th in State

The Camden Middle School FFA Biotechnology Team, Kaiyah Dooley, Bry Baker, Graham Kelly and Kendall Grant, placed 1st in the Biotechnology Competition

The Camden Middle School FFA Quiz Bowl Team, Addison Buhl, Janiyah Sutton, Jared Creech, and Luke Mills, placed 1st in the Quiz Bowl Competition

Pam Djigounian was selected as the Teacher of the Year and the 2015-2016 County Teacher of the Year

Science Olympiad Team placed 2nd at Regionals

Science Quiz Bowl placed 2nd in the Triangle Science Bowl in Raleigh

Students placed 2nd and 3rd in the Short Story Writing and Poetry Competitions held by the Camden Women’s Club

Janice Simmons selected Teacher of the Year

Chris Kozak presented at the NC Art Conference in 2014

Sophomore John Foster was admitted to the NC School of Science and Math

Groups of teachers and students will be visiting Europe this Spring

HOSA Club visited New York City as a learning opportunity for the CTE Internship, raising over $15,000 for the trip

Health Science II students and all graduating seniors were certified in basic CPR

DECA Students competed in the Regional DECA Competition for the first time, with several students qualifying to compete at the State level

Students in the Exceptional Children’s Program created “Camden Craft Corner” to raise money and teach life skills

Five HOSA Club students placed in the top 10 in the State HOSA Competition

HOSA Club members earned vision screening certification and screened 3rd Graders at Grandy Primary School and 5th Graders at Camden Intermediate School

Health Science Internship students met with 1st Graders at Grandy Primary School to teach them about Disaster Awareness

Marketing students are completing internships at local businesses and schools.

4 Math students competed in the State Math Competition

Faculty recognized 32 students for academics, athletics, character, the arts, and leadership with the Bruin Wall of Fame

Technology:

Principals, Amber Davis and Billie Berry are participating in the Distinguished leadership in Practice Program for Digital Learning

Created a Digital Learning Focus Group to discuss future plans for technology integration

A full-time Technology Assistant was hired

Purchased 50 Google Chromebooks for use in Math and Science classrooms

Billie Berry and Karen McPherson are presenting a the 2015 “Dare 2 Share” Conference in June

In the past 4 years, different teams of 6 teachers were sent to the NC Technology in Education Society (NCTIES) Annual Conference to increase our school’s exposure to technology

Athletics:

Chris McGee, Football Coach, was named Coach of the Year for the Coastal 10 Athletic Conference

Summer Sawyer, Volleyball Coach, was named Coach of the Year for the Coastal 10 Athletic Conference

Michael Reaves, Cross Country Coach, was named Coach of the Year for the Coastal 10 Athletic Conference

Doug Leary, Baseball Coach, was named Coach of the Year for the Coastal 10 Athletic Conference

Camden County High School Athletics was awarded the Wells Fargo Cup for the Coastal 10 Athletic Conference

Senior Brynn Fleury was named Volleyball Co-Player of the year for the Coastal 10 Athletic Conference

Junior Tyler Beyel was named Baseball Player of the Year for the Coastal 10 Athletic Conference

Junior Trevor Carr won the State Championship in the Triple Jump and was name 1A MVP for the State Track Meet

There were numerous All- Conference and All-Area selections for all sports

Fine Arts:

Competed in 4 Marching Band contests and won numerous awards

Band Members were selected and represented in the All-District Band, and were eligible to audition for the North Carolina State Honors Band

Many Band Members participated in the Albemarle Band Clinic in March

Winter Color Guard was created and competed in Raleigh

Art students presented Veterans’ Day art work at the Arts of The Albemarle in November

US Coast Guard Junior Leadership Program:

Cadets attended a week-long leadership school (COLS) at The Citadel in coordination with AF JROTC

Awarded three $1,500 scholarships for graduation Seniors (the amounts of these scholarships were increased from $1,000 to $1,500)

Conducted various Color Guard presentations throughout the community and at United States Coast Guard ceremonies

Awarded League Championship in Marksmanship for the 4th consecutive year

Hosted an annual Spring Salute to honor the Camden County Schools Teachers of the Year

Senior Jacob Dupree was accepted into the US Coast Guard Academy (the 3rd member of the Junior Leadership Program to gain acceptance to a military academy)

FFA and Agriculture:

FFA Chapter hosted the Northeast Regional FFA Fall Leadership Conference in which one of our members served as a NE Regional FFA Officer, and conducted one of the leadership workshops

Greatly expanded our Agriculture Program by adding a second Agriculture Teacher

Added an additional pathway in Agriculture Mechanics

Partnered with Grandy Primary School to host Ag Day this Spring

Agriculture students are oversaw and helped coordinate the 3rd Grade “Community Gardening ” project

Giving Back:

The Do Something Club raised over $2,800 for local families battling cancer by hosting a Staff vs. Staff Basketball Game during Spirit Week

HOSA and FCA students raised over $3,400 for a local family battling cancer by hosting a “Night out for Blue” fundraiser

Fellowship of Christian Athletes hosted a Food Drive for Christmas and Thanksgiving

2 American Red Cross Blood Drives were hosted that resulted in 140 pints of blood being donating- exceeding our goal for both drives

“Volley for a Cure” volleyball game to raise money for breast cancer research

HOSA sold Lymphoma Awareness t-shirts raising $1,500 for the family of the student battling cancer

HOSA raised over $1,000 for children who were in need at Christmas

The Do Something Club hosted a toy drive at Christmas

The Band held a “Toys for Tots” Christmas Concert collecting toys as admission to the concert

World History students presented their “Walk for Water” project to Camden Middle School students, and created children’s books which they presented to Grandy Primary School. The students planned and carried out a fundraiser that raised over $1,000 for a well in Kenya

National Honor Society raised and donated over $3,300 for various community needs

USCG Junior Leadership Program raised over $2,000 for the family of a former student who was recently paralyzed

Students have accumulated thousands of community service hours through the Junior Leadership Program, National Honor Society, and Graduation Project

2014-15 Accomplishments by CamTech High School

Began the “Bruins Times” (school newspaper) which raised over $420 that was donated to different charities

Through 20% Projects students raised and donated $1,259.75 for Relay for Life and $271.26 for the Albemarle Food Bank

CTE 20% Project has students working with Grandy Primary School, helping students with reading

Implemented and certified 18 students through the Everfi Financial Literacy Program

Certified 33 students in Microsoft PowerPoint and 28 students in Microsoft Word

Cheyenne Rollings attended the US Naval Academy Summer Seminar

Genna Crites was accepted into the North Carolina School of Science and Math

Clayton Hall attended the NC Governor’s School

Bridge Building Team (all CamTech High School students) placed 1st in the Regional Contest and 2nd in the State Contest

Students placed 1st in the Voice of Democracy Regional Competition and 2nd in the Regional Competition

3 students placed 1st in the FRA Essay Contest and 1 student placed 3rd

Transitioned all student email to Gmail and implemented Google Apps (drive, docs, sheets, groups, etc.) into lesson plans

All teachers used Google Classroom as their learning management system

A total of 180+ books were read independently by 20 Juniors through an English project

Students began taking face-to-face courses at College of the Albemarle

3 teachers attended a Holocaust seminar and listened to a Holocaust survivor

SGA raised $400 and was able to help 4 families this year, as well as donate over $150 for Cystic Fibrosis research

Seniors went to College of the Albemarle-Currituck and toured their facility

Seniors saw a modern Macbeth play at Tidewater Community College in Norfolk, VA

Students participated in an Albemarle Food Bank and SPCA Food/Animal Drive and the winning class delivered items and toured the Albemarle Food Bank facilities

Jennifer Lilly, Glenda Armstrong and 5 students attended STEM Career Showcase for Students with Disabilities Conference in Raleigh

7 Junior and Senior students volunteered one day a week in Melissa Harnly’s classroom at Camden Intermediate School

Interact Club participated or volunteered at Grandy Primary School’s Fall Festival, Community Helper Day, Holiday Store, BINGO Night, Book Fair; Camden Intermediate School’s Early Release Dances, Camden Middle School’s AR Beach Bash and Carnival; Walk for Autism; Rotary Club’s Roadside Clean-Ups and Pancakes for Polio; Dismal Days; Benefit Dinner for Tristan Kight; PEP Grant; Salvation Army’s Christmas Bell Ringing; Christmas cards sent to soldiers overseas; SPCA; 4-H Livestock Show concessions; Senior Awards Night; Albemarle Dance Recital; and the Edenton Peanut Festival

Interact Club co-sponsored the “Night Out for Blue” fundraiser for Kaylee Rios, raising over $3,500

Annual CamTech Spring Fling raised over $500 for Walk for Autism

Michael Reaves started a Cross-Country Team for both CamTech High School and Camden County High School students

Senior Rabekah Mattix was the recipient of the Albemarle EMC Washington Youth Tour and the Improved Order of the Redman History Awards

Senior Chasante Jones signed to play volleyball at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke

$296,869 in scholarship dollars have been awarded to the Class of 2015

Camden Baxter-Baronas was selected as 4th Chair Euphonium for the 9-10 Band for the Eastern District Band Clinic with Logan Hogge selected as an Alternate
