Biochemical Biomarkers as a Tool in Chromium Induced

Toxicity to Green Tiger Prawn, Penaeus semisulcatus

(De-Haan, 1844)

Abstract Estuarine ecosystem and its biodiversity are at higher risk due to coastal contamination

by heavy metals and conservation of biodiversity can be accomplished by utilizing biomarkers of pollutant at different exposure levels. In the present study, chronic toxicity

test was conducted to evaluate the antioxidants and enzymes as the possible biomarkers

in Green Tiger Prawn, Penaeus semisulcatus. The chronic endpoint value (MATC), no-

observed effect concentration (NOEC), and low-observed effective concentration (LOEC) were also calculated to frame a criterion against chromium toxicity. The biochemical

profiles such as total protein, catalase, lipid peroxidation, acetylcholinesterase, reduced

glutathione, and glutathione-S-transferase activity were studied. The calculated no-observed effect concentration was 69.45 µg/l and low-observed effective concentration

was 33.98 µg/l, the chronic value was 48.57 µg/l for 30 days by Dunnett’s procedure

from background concentrations. Mortality was recorded to be 55 per cent in 80 µg/l on the 30th day of the toxicity test and was significant with other concentrations. Activity of

catalase and glutathione-S-transferase, lipid peroxidation process and the amount of reduced glutathione significantly (p < 0.01) increased with consecutive increase in

exposed chromium concentrations (5, 10, 20, 40, and 80 µg/l). The activity of

acetylcholinesterase was found to be significantly (p < 0.01) reduced. Hence, catalase, lipid peroxidation, acetylcholinesterase, reduced glutathione, and glutathione-S-

transferase activity was validated as the promising biomarkers for chromium toxicity with Penaeus semisulcatus.

Abstract Present study was investigated the effect of NaCl stress on seed germination, pigments content, protein and proline content of soybean (Glycine max L.). The soybean plant was

exposed to increasing concentrations of 0, 50, 100 and 150 mM NaCl salt stress. The 7th

day old plant was exposed to salt stress. The results indicated that increasing concentrations of NaCl salt solution showed decrease in the percentage of germination,

pigments concentration, root and shoot lengths, fresh and dry root weights and pigments.

Flowering Plants of Karnataka State Women’s University,

Jnanashakti, Torvi Campus, Bijapur and Its

Adjoining Area

Abstract The goal of this study is to provide the existing botanical inventory of the area. A floristic

survey was conducted in the month of September 2013 to May 2014 for the record of

flowering plant diversity in and around of Karnataka State Women’s University, Jnanashakti, Torvi Campus, Bijapur. The survey represents 257 plant species belonging

to 219 genera and 68 families were identified. Of them, the families like Poaceae, Fabaceae, Caesalpiniaceae found dominant in the campus. However, the campus is

devoid of trees due to barren rocky/stony wastes land. Moreover, based on present survey

recommended that many more number of tree/shrub species must be planted and it should be proper monitoring in future.

Preliminary Assessment of Flowering Plants with

Reference to Temple Complexes or Sacred

Groves in Bijapur

Abstract The present work was carried with the aim to document the floral diversity in the selected

sacred sites or temple complexes in Bijapur area to access their services benefiting at

regional levels to local inhabitants. A total of 139 taxa (including cultivars) belonging to 121 genera distributed in 52 families were recorded in 10 selected sites. The list of plants

and their uses were also been discussed.
