Bioenergy and Wastewater Tretament

The Bioenergy and Wastewater Treatment research line seeks tointegrate different disciplines to develop solutions in theenergy-water nexus. The main areas to tackle are: biogas,biodiesel and biojet fuel production, Nitrogen and Phosphorusremoval and use from industrial wastewater, wastewatertreatment technologies.

Gibrán Sidney Alemán Nava, PhD

Gibran Aleman has a PhD Engineering inEnvironmental Systems with a BSc in BiochemistryEngineering. Currently he is Leader of Bioenergy andWastewater Treatment area in Chair of EnvironmentalBioprocesses. He has experience in microalgaebiomass and lipid productivity optimization. Hisresearch has been focus on the optimization ofoperation conditions of medium scalephotobioreactors. Moreover, he also develops projectsrelated to anaerobic treatment for biogas production.He has been awarded with the Genera Monterrey,Hacerlo Mejor 2011 and DOW SustainabilityInnovation Student Challenge awards, and is coauthorof two pending patent.

Area of research focused on the study of nanobiotechnology forapplication in environmental and food bioprocesses. Microalgaeculture with food applications and extraction of high valuemetabolites. Microalgae cultivation for carbon dioxide captureand wastewater treatment. M.Sc. Sara P. Cuellar-Bermudez

Chemical Engineer with experience on algal cultures inphotobioreactors as well in lipid extraction andpigments. She has participated in research visits to KULeuven in Belgium and Arizona State University (USA).Her research has focus in food waste re-utilization bymicroalgae as well as lipid production for biodieselfrom cyanobacteria. Currently she leads a co-industryfunded project related with supercritical extraction ofmetabolites in different feedstock and the“Photobiological CO2 Capture and Fuel Production forthe Cement Industry” in collaboration with UCLA.

Pharmaceutical Chemistry Biologist specializing in theenvironmental area, she is graduated from theFacultad de Ciencias Químicas of the UniversidadAutonoma de Nuevo León.Has a Master of Science in Industrial Microbiology.In July 2014, she obtained his degree of Doctor ofScience in Pharmacy with thesis project: "Obtainingand characterization of arabinoxylan-oligosaccharidesfrom nixtamalized corn pericarp and determination ofprebiotic activity and antioxidant activity."In 2012 she performed a research stay at theUniversity of Vigo in "Biotechnological processes andtechnologies for determining biological activity".Has extensive experience in the area of utilization ofagro-industrial waste to obtain value-addedcompounds.

Research Area focused on the treatment of vegetal andmicrobial biomass for the production of value-addedcompounds, microbial enzymes and nutraceutical ingredients.

Dr. José Rodríguez Rodríguez

Doctor in Biological Sciences with emphasis on food and Master inChemistry with specialization in Analytical Chemistry. Experience inthe Food Industry for Gruma, SA de C. V, in the area of AnalyticalChemistry for ATLATEC and education field in the ITESM since 1996.Domain processes optimization and validation of methodologies andquality systems analytical laboratories. Currently working as co-counsel in the UANL and ITESM in research projects in the area ofFood and Chemistry of natural products on issues such as extraction,identification, quantification and stabilization of bioactive compoundsfrom agroindustrial products. Collaborates transversely with otherlines of investigation in the area of Analytical Chemistry. Has 8publications and 9 participations in national and internationalconferences.

Processing), through the identification of opportunity areas in the market by products that can be produced in the
