1. Summary of the event

The Bhimgoda Barrage, also referred to as the Bhimgoda Weir or Bhimgoda Head Works, is a barrage on the Ganges River near HarkiPauri in Haridwar district, Uttarakhand, India. Built as the headworks of the Upper Ganges Canal, an initial barrage was completed by 1854 and replaced twice; the final one completed in 1983. The primary purpose for the barrage is irrigation but it also serves to provide water for hydroelectric power production and control floods. The area behind the barrage is known as the Neel Dhara Bird Sanctuary and is a popular destination for various waterbirds and tourists.

Design and operation

The barrage is 455 m (1,493 ft) long and sits at the head of a 23,000 km2 (8,880 sq mi) catchment area. It contains 15 spillways gates and 7 under-sluice gates, all 18 m (59 ft) wide. The flood discharge of the barrage is 19,300 m3/s (681,573 cu ft/s). Adjacent to it, on the right bank of the river, the barrage diverts water into the Upper Ganges Canal. The canal system is immense, consisting of 6,450 km (4,008 mi) of main canal and branches, providing irrigation for up to 2,023,000 ha (4,998,942 acres). At a distance of 13 km (8 mi) down the main canal, water reaches the 20.4 MW Pathri Power Plant at 29°42′12″N 77°51′38″E. It contains three 6.8 MW Kaplan turbine-generators and has a design hydraulic head of 9.75 m (32 ft). Further down

Page 58: REPORT ON GUEST LECTURE ON GEOLOGY & CIVIL ... - COER Roorkee · Name of Guest Lecturer: Prof. AK Pachauri, Ex- Prof IIT Roorkee, Ex- Senior consultant NDMA, New Delhi 1. A summary

Building Information Modeling (BIM) Will Be Used in Large-scale Applications

More civil engineering projects this year are likely to see large-scale

utilization of the Cloud technology and Big Data. Also, latest in the list of

innovation is the Building Information Modeling (BIM). Engineers can now

create virtual models of their designs through intelligent 3D modeling

process.

Demand for Sustainable Designs - Sustainable design is the most significant

civil engineering trends in upcoming year. It is a movement that enjoys much

support from global organizations and even the government. The demand for

smart materials, intelligent electrical grids, smart buildings with embedded

sensors, and other revolutionary technologies is giving civil engineers the

push to innovate sustainable designs that are forward-looking. One of the key

areas of focus is zero-energy housing. Insulating homes with double skin

facade and integrating PV panels that facilitate better utilization of captured

energy.

Advanced Building Materials Will Shape the Civil Engineering Designs of

the Future -Advanced materials with shifting properties that adapt to

external conditions are being introduced into the civil engineering industry.

From cement composite, advanced steel, and self-healing concrete, to fiber-

reinforced polymer composites, technology is transforming the materials

being used in construction.

SECOND SESSION ( 2.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m.) : A training program of 2 hours on

Primavara software by- Mr. Digvijay Singh Chauhan Trainer, Insergo Tech

private ltd, Dehradun.

During his training he demonstrated the use of tools to create a project baseline

program (set by planning manager with the help of site planning engineer) ,

the initial program used to find the actual sequence of activities to be followed

for execution in site.

Then he displayed the initial baseline program, which is once is set and

finalized then showed us how we can now monitor the project very easily.

After that the Baseline program can be set in the program and can be

monitored. So this gives an actual site progress status. This is comparatively

very easy in primavera rather than any other software.

Primavera P6 is professional and amazing software program, which is

employed not by simply planners, and also project professionals, engineers,

schedulers, and other people involved with planning, management, project

reporting. Primavera P6 possesses benefited every industry through

aerospace to be able to manufacturing, electronics to information technology,

Telecom sector to Civil, and all other sectors that are involved in business

management.

Conclusion - The workshop helped assess the current level emerging technologies

and trends in Civil Engineering and civil engineering industry, like any other,

Page 60: REPORT ON GUEST LECTURE ON GEOLOGY & CIVIL ... - COER Roorkee · Name of Guest Lecturer: Prof. AK Pachauri, Ex- Prof IIT Roorkee, Ex- Senior consultant NDMA, New Delhi 1. A summary

is no stranger to evolving challenges, and is undergoing a radical

transformation from the outset of past years. The need to build sustainable

buildings, bridges and roads is higher than ever. Energy efficiency within

these structures is a major need, as well. Students definitely have learnt a lot

from these useful lectures and training program, and we are hoping that we

ArcGIS is a geographic information system (GIS) for working with maps and

geographic information. It is used for creating and using maps, compiling

geographic data, analyzing mapped information, sharing and discovering

geographic information, using maps and geographic information in a range of

applications, and managing geographic information in a database. The system

provides an infrastructure for making maps and geographic information

available throughout an organization, across a community, and openly on the

27 March, 2019, FIRST SESSION (from 9.00 a.m to 12.30 p.m): A lecture

delivered by Mr. Shashank Yadav, Assistant Professor, COER, Roorkee on

Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) and Brief Introduction of

“Data Processing by Trimble Business Center software”

Differential Global Positioning Systems (DGPS) are enhancements to

the Global Positioning System (GPS) which provide improved location

accuracy, in the range of operations of each system, from the 15-meter

nominal GPS accuracy to about 10 cm in case of the best implementations.

Each DGPS uses a network of fixed ground-based reference stations to

broadcast the difference between the positions indicated by the GPS

satellite system and known fixed positions. These stations broadcast the

difference between the measured satellite pseudo ranges and actual

(internally computed) pseudo ranges, and receiver stations may correct their

pseudo ranges by the same amount. The digital correction signal is typically

broadcast locally over ground-based transmitters of shorter range.

IIT ROORKEE

Date: 28 March, 2019

Venue: Department of Earthquake Engineering, IIT Roorkee

Number of participants: 42

Contact Person: Dr. Ravi Jakka, Assistant Professor, IIT Roorkee

1. Summary of the event

On 28 March, 2019, the Department of Civil Engineering has planned an

industrial visit to Department of Earthquake Engineering, IIT Roorkee. The

students of III year and IV year in a batch of 31 were taken for the visit with

two faculty members Dr Mridula and Ms Pallavi Chaurasia.

Department of Earthquake Engineering, IIT Roorkee

PURPOSE OF VISIT

The purpose to visit the Department of Earthquake Engineering, IIT Roorkee

was to make the students familiar with the design of an Earthquake Resistant

also how the soil plays an important role in the stability of a structure adding to this they can learn the monitoring of earthquakes. Students have a full-fledged view that how Civil Engineering can be related to the Earthquake Engineering.

INFORMATION OF THE VISIT

The visit was carried out in three stages, firstly the students were taken to soil

dynamics lab, then to structure testing lab and finally to the seismology lab.

In soil dynamics lab, Dr Ravi Jakka, briefed the students about the equipments

that are used for the testing of soils in order to determine the stability of the

structure. Sir explained about the cyclic triaxial test and then explained about

the liquefaction process and how the test is carried out in order to make the

structure safe against submergence.

After that MrSujit guided students to the pseudo and quasi structure testing lab where he give a detailed information about the testing of load carrying walls in horizontal and vertical direction. Adding to this he also briefed about the Earthquake resistant visco-elastic energy dissipator link elements used to make the structure. This covered the shock table testing then the shake table lab was also shown to the students where they saw a large table in which the framed structure is taken to the shake table which is made to test whether the structure can withstand high magnitude earthquakes especially of Zone V. Finally Dr SC Gupta interacted with the students in the seismology lab where the students were shown how the seismograph records the earthquake and the data is analysed so that detailed information can be given about the earthquake occurred in any part of India.

Conclusion

From this visit, students gained knowledge about the stability of the structure and how the data interpretation is done for the earthquake. We are thankful to the department of Earthquake Engineering, IIT Roorkee for such a delightful experience.
