ABOUT THE WORKSHOPIndian Traditional Knowledge (TK) available in the form of practices and concepts in ancient literature is a valuable asset. During various activities of MHRD-IPR Chair, IIT Roorkee, a need was felt that Indian traditional knowledge should be used with contemporary innovation for protection and use of traditional knowledge for the larger benefit of mankind. Considering the importance of the issue, a national workshop will be organized on October 17-18, 2015 under the aegis of MHRD-IPR Chair, IIT Roorkee.

GENESIS OF THE WORKSHOP

IIT Roorkee is located in the state of Uttarakhand. Uttarakhand has large intellectual capital related to traditional knowledge. Many practices related to Ayurveda, construction of earthquake resistant housing, temples, art, etc. are available in the state. Similar practices and knowledge is available in different parts of the country as well. As a community of scientists, it is always a source of curiosity to understand the science behind these traditional practices.

To answer this zeal, MHRD-IPR chair started organizing different activities in the past one year to develop an understanding of the science behind traditional knowledge.

BACKGROUND

Traditional knowledge is a cumulative body of knowledge, know-how, practices and representations maintained and developed by all societies and derived from interaction with the natural environment. In most societies, it is largely heuristic knowledge based on statistical evidence of past success. Ancient Indian civilization has sophisticated theoretical and practical foundations as evident in domains like medicine (Ayurveda), agriculture (krishi Shastra), mathematics (ganit), architecture, fine arts and performing arts etc.

Due to the Teacher-disciple tradition (guru-shisya parampara) traditional knowledge is largely individual-dependent and is not process driven. Unfortunately, some of the traditional knowledge is in the process of being lost. Thus, it is imperative that an effort be made to document the various forms of traditional knowledge, investigate their theoretical foundations and also develop epistemologically inform bridges with science. Furthermore, dialogue between shastras and science would enrich both knowledge systems. Focus on traditional knowledge will also help to protect the Intellectual Property and can then be used for benefit of a larger part of society.

NATIONAL WORKSHOP With the central objective to promote a healthy dialogue between shastras and science for the mutual benefit, MHRD-IPR Chair is organizing a two-days national workshop on the theme “Scientific Validation of Traditional Knowledge” on October 17-18, 2015 at IIT Roorkee.

OBJECTIVES OF THE WORKSHOPThe workshop will focus on the following specific objectives:

1. To create a platform for collaboration of traditional knowledge experts and modern researchers.

2. To develop methodology for protecting traditional knowledge through its documentation.

3. To launch a national mission for documentation of science behind traditional knowledge.

4. To prepare academic curriculum for secondary and higher studies and to produce reference books for this purpose.

5. To build capacity in the field of IP protection of traditional knowledge.

MAJOR THEMESThe discussions on TK in the workshop are proposed to be on following four themes: 1. Life Science-Biology, Pharmacology, Environmental Science,

Agriculture, Health Science etc.2. Natural Science-Physics, Chemistry, Astronomy, Atmospheric

Science, Mathematics, Astrology etc.3. Engineering Science-Metallurgy, Acoustic Engineering,

Biomedical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering etc.

4. Social Science- Building and Habitat Science, Management, Music, Craft etc.

EXPECTED OUTCOME

1. Documentation of TK available in literature and in practice. 2. Developing a framework for scientific validation of

documented TK.3. To develop Encyclopedia containing scientific validation of

TK. 4. To develop academic syllabus and course contents of TK to

be delivered at secondary and higher education followed by training of teachers for effective delivery of course contents.

5. To generate a mass movement using snowball effect for creating awareness related to use of TK

WHO SHOULD ATTENDThe workshop is for academicians, scientists, architects, traditional and contemporary medicine practitioners, industry delegates, research scholars, policy makers, IP attorneys and whole intellect community who have active involvement in the governance of traditional knowledge, its documentation, innovation propulsion and IP creation. The workshop is open to all who can contribute in bringing a holistic approach in the mindset of masses towards scientific validation of traditional knowledge and its importance in present scenario.

This workshop will provide a special forum and platform for traditional knowledge experts, contemporary researchers, academicians, scientists, policy makers across the nation to present and discuss their thoughts on various aspects in the process of scientific validation of traditional knowledge and IP generation.

FORMAT OF THE WORKSHOPThe workshop is designed for invited talks, structured presentations of concept papers on the theme of the workshop.
