DC trip changes Medicare ruling

Summertime in Washington State is a little bit of paradise with its temperate, sunny days and star-filled nights. So why would we venture to the other Washington (DC) this time of year with its hot, steamy climate? To meet with federal lawmakers about issues that affect you and your family’s health. On this year’s trip we voiced our concern about a serious matter regarding medications for

hospice patients.

This spring, Medicare changed the rules for who pays for medications that hospice patients have taken before they started receiving hospice care. As a hospice agency, we pay for all drugs related to a hospice patient’s terminal condition. Unrelated medications (say, eye drops for glaucoma) were paid previously by the Part D Medicare benefit. With Medicare’s new rule, patients across the country ended up paying out-of-pocket for their unrelated prescriptions.

Congress heard about the 84-year-old man who broke down in tears at the pharmacy counter because he needed the cardiac medication he’d been on for years. We told our federal representatives about hardships faced by patients and families, and asked them to tell Medicare to put a hold on the rule for now. In DC, we met with Washington State federal legislators (Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler, and Senators Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray) — and they all signed on to a letter asking Medicare to halt implementation of the rule. As this news letter went to print, we’re happy to report that Medicare has changed its rule, making it easier for hospice patients to get their medications when they need them.

So we’re willing to leave paradise briefly to advocate for health laws in Washington DC that improve health care for Washington State patients and families.

Speaking of paradise, you can read on page 21 about our successful fundraiser A Iil’ bit of paradise. With the community’s support, nearly $115,000 was raised for charity care. We’re already planning next year’s May 1st Mexican fiesta, so mark your calendars!

It takes a Community to care for patients and families, and your gifts support dignified hospice, skilled home health, and compassionate grief services for all ages. Thank you for being a part of our Community.

Sincerely,

Greg Pang, CEO

Memorial brick program

Esther “Jinx” Victor’s memorial brick in the E. Kenneth Henderson Memorial Garden.

You are always welcome at the E. Kenneth Henderson Memorial Garden in Longview. The garden is a special place for life and renewed hope. Visit, enjoy nature and remember treasured loved ones.

Here’s a glimpse into the life of someone whose name is inscribed on a memorial garden brick.

Esther Victor embraced her nickname, “Jinx.” She was a child during the Great Depression and spent time in an orphanage and at the “poor farm.” Books provided her with knowledge and enlightened conversation. She created a life full of creative pursuits. Jinx became a singer, artist and actress.

Jinx connected with Community when her

Hope blooms here

It’s easy to order engraved memorial bricks

A single brick (4”x8”) holds one name ($200 each). A double brick (8”x8”) holds one or two names ($400 each). An American flag may be added to a double brick in memory of a veteran. Your loved ones’ memorial bricks will be lasting markers for years to come. Contact Heidi at 360.414.5405 or [email protected].

husband required hospice services during the last years of his life. She told others she was thrilled with his care and she supported Community’s mission of caring for patients and families. However, her life had changed. She was lonely and bored without her spouse; not sure how she would enjoy the days ahead.

During this time, her daughter, Debbie Peterson, joined Community as the Hospice Thrift Shop manager. “Why don’t you have a book department?” Jinx asked. Debbie encouraged her to give it a try. Jinx donated a few books. She researched, priced and displayed them, inserting notes for the next reader. The book department thrived! Jinx became “The Book Lady.” Customers bought books, enjoyed them and donated them back to the thrift shop. On the days she volunteered, Jinx could be heard singing.

Now there is an engraved memorial brick bearing her name in the Ken Henderson Garden: Jinx Victor, “The Book Lady.” The brick resides in the serene setting among beautiful plantings, water features, mossy rocks and reflection areas.

Pet Peace of Mind

Our agency recognizes the special bond between pets and their owners, so we partnered with Banfield Charitable Trust in 2012 to offer Pet Peace of Mind® (PPOM) services to Cowlitz County hospice patients with pets. PPOM services include pet food, pet walking, cat litter, financial assistance with routine veterinary care, transportation to veterinary appointments, temporary pet foster care, and pet placement (if needed). PPOM helps keeps pets and hospice owners together to the end.

Rusty Rietz was a Community Hospice patient and Vietnam war veteran who used PPOM services for his black

lab, Roscoe. A PPOM volunteer walked Roscoe, brought him dog food and transported him to veterinarian appointments. PPOM paid for all expenses and allowed Rusty to keep Roscoe at his side until he passed away on January 8, 2014.

With Banfield Charitable Trust’s financial support, we’re excited to bring PPOM to Clark County this fall. PPOM depends on volunteers and community partners like veterinarians, groomers and pet supply companies. If you’re a pet lover or pet services provider, we’d love to hear from you.

Contact Charlean at [email protected] or 360.253.4626.

Grateful Hearts

Grateful Hearts honorees Names in bold are Community caregiver honorees from January-June 2014. The names below them are the grateful donors.

To recognize our staff who make a difference in patients’ lives, we launched Grateful Hearts. This giving program recognizes our caregivers for going above and beyond in their work.

Honored caregivers are recognized in many ways including being listed in this newsletter (see below). Grateful Hearts honoree Wendy Beres, CNA, was recognized two times in the first few months of the program. One gift resulted from a patient’s family member who noticed the Grateful Hearts pin she wore.

Are there caregivers at Community you want to acknowledge for their exceptional care? Make Grateful Hearts gifts in their honor. Your gifts can be made in memory of loved ones while also honoring your Community caregivers.

Community Legacy Society

Children inspire planned gift

Dan and Debi Spjut have supported Community for a long time – since 2006! Over the years, you may have seen them volunteering at our events. Dan serves as president of the board of directors and has held other key roles on committees.

A few years ago, Debi decided to use her creative talents at Camp Cedars, our children’s free summer grief camp. She organized craft projects, got her friends involved with the preparations, and then worked with the children on their camp projects. As the children made memory books and talked about lost loved ones, they made new memories. They laughed, played and cried. They felt safe and comforted among people who understood their grief. When she got home, Debi shared her camp experiences with Dan. She told him about watching the transformations in the children’s lives, and how the experience touched her personally.

Many times throughout the years, the Spjuts saw the positive influence of children’s grief support services. The combined talents of volunteers and staff bring healing for all grieving children in our community – not just hospice families. Some children have returned as young adults, completed volunteer training and now help other children who experience losses.

The Spjuts were inspired to support families beyond their own lifetimes. Together, they made a decision to include Community Home Health & Hospice in their wills. Their gift will be designated for the children’s bereavement program to ensure care for children in the future.

“Community Home Health & Hospice needs planned gifts to keep all of the important services alive for future generations.” - Dan and Debi Spjut

The Spjuts are excited about Community’s newest projects. Dan said, “The new James Avery Grief Center is an amazing place for people of all ages to come and meet others who understand their grief. The younger children play games while lots of other activities keep them engaged. There is a space designated just for teens to hang; with the activities that they like, and adults can find their special place too. In addition to this wonderful space, everyone in the community can enjoy the peace and serenity of the Ken Henderson Memorial Garden which is next to the center. It’s a great place to find a quiet bench, breathe, and reflect.”

Dan is enjoying retirement and Debi will retire later this year. Both plan to continue their personal involvement and support. For their gift to Community, the Spjuts signed a simple document informing us of their plan. This automatically enrolled them in the Community Legacy Society. It is our great honor to recognize the Spjuts and others who have included Community in their estate plan.

Contact Julie at 360.414.5406 or [email protected] to plan your gift.

$115k raised for charity care

Generous community members brought in nearly $115,000 during Home At Last 2014: a lil’ bit of paradise charity care fundraiser! More than 400 people showed up to “party with a purpose” at Longview’s Cowlitz County Regional Conference Center on Friday, May 2.

Event proceeds support Community’s charity care program which provides home health and hospice services such as care for uninsured and underinsured patients, inpatient respite care, telemonitoring, grief support and translation and transportation services. Last year, the agency spent nearly one-half million dollars on charity care!

On behalf of families these dollars will support, Community thanks all the individuals and organizations who contributed to this year’s successful event.
