reflections on advert

Questions Advert Screen capture 1) Is your production fit for purpose? E.g. does it fulfil the codes and conventions of a TV advert? Is it 30 60seconds? My advert fulfills some of the codes and conventions of a TV advert because it has some kind of slogan and a logo which is “the network that’s full with entertainment” It is less than 60 seconds so that’s another convention it follows. It goes against the convention that the product is always in your face because in this advert it isn’t focused on a phone much it’s more focused on the freebie you get if you join the network. It uses humor to grab the attention of the audience when the male character falls down the stairs. I think my advert uses a bit of testimonials because the male character is testifying to the quality of the phone network by saying when you join the network you get the free tickets.

Questions

Advert   Screen  capture

1) Is  your  production  fit  for  purpose?  E.g.  does  it  fulfil  the  codes  and  conventions  of  a  TV  advert?  Is  it  30-‐60seconds?

2) Compare  with  original  intentions  –  have  you  achieved  what  you  set  out  to?  Refer  to  your  pre-‐production;  script,  storyboard,  shot  list  and  shooting  schedule.

My  original  intentions  were  for  the  male  and  female  characters  to  be  racing  on  public  transport  and  one  of  them  getting  to  the  cable  cars  first  to  get  to  the  O2  then  the  other  one  falls  on  the  floor  crying  hysterically  and  the  phone  network  slogan  comes  up  at  the  end.      Some  of  the  shots  that  I  put  in  my  storyboard  were  not  used  but  most  of  my  idea  worked  even  though  some  of  the  things  I  planned  did  not  work  (e.g.  going  on  the  cable  cars  and  the  public  transport  race)  However  I  achieved  the  race  part  and  I  did  it  in  a  house  instead  and  used  my  brothers  car  for  the  transport  instead.        My  original  shooting  schedule  was  during  lesson  times  and  I  did  some  filming  during  these  times  and  the  shots  were  clear  but  it  was  more  suitable  for  something  like  a  film  because  it  had  long  shots  so  when  I  changed  my  idea  I  filmed  over  the  half  term.

 3) Technical  qualities  –

are  there  any  flaws  in  the  filming  or  editing?  Does  the  advert  look  professional?

Some  of  the  clips  were  quite  shaky  and  when  filming  the  lighting  wasn’t  the  best  but  I  when  I  edited  in  Adobe  premiere  pro  I  made  the  clips  a  little  brighter.      Sometimes  the  camera  kept  going  out  of  focus  and  some  shots  kept  coming  out  blurry  so  they  needed  re-‐shooting.      Also  when  filming  with  the  tripod  it  kept  cutting  off  the  actor’s  head,  so  some  shots  were  done  without  the  tripod.      It’s  not  the  most  professional  looking  advert  but  I  tried  my  best.

4) Accessibility  to  Target  Audience  –  does  the  show  seem  appropriate  to  the  audience  that  you  identified  -‐  how/why?

I  think  it  is  appropriate  to  the  target  audience,  which  are  teenagers  and  young  adults  because  they  get  free  tickets  to  concerts  if  they  join  the  network  so  the  idea  is  appealing.    This  target  audience  is  the  one  that  is  most  likely  to  go  concerts/festivals.    Also  I  think  a  lot  of  young  people  can  relate,  because  when  tickets  go  on  sale  everyone  tries  to  get  them  and  it’s  quite  stressful  when  you  can’t  find  any  so  with  this  network  you  can  save  yourself  the  stress  and

it’s  for  free  when  you  join.

5) What  were  your  contributions  to  the  advert?  How  did  you  divide  up  the  work?  Did  you  feel  like  you  worked  well  as  a  team?

I  didn’t  like  the  original  idea  my  group  came  up  with  because  I  felt  it  was  too  boring  and  too  long  for  an  advert.  At  first  it  sounded  good  but  not  for  an  advert.        So  I  changed  the  idea  and  made  the  advert  so  it  can  focus  more  on  the  freebies  rather  than  the  actual  phone.      I  did  the  storyboard  and  a  long  script  wasn’t  needed  because  there  wasn’t  much  talking  in  the  advert.  I  just  did  a  mini  one  and  added  it  to  the  storyboard  because  there  is  some  dialogue  at  the  end.      I  also  made  a  treatment  and  a  production  schedule.  The  idea  on  my  treatment  was  quite  different  to  my  final  advert  because  I  changed  the  idea  a  bit.

6) What  have  you  learned  from  making  your  advert?  Is  there  anything  you  would  do  differently  next  time?

I  have  learned  that  adverts  should  make  more  sense  because  if  you  don’t  understand  then  the  audience  definitely  will  not  understand.    I  would  definitely  include  more  locations  and  offer  some  more  information  about  the  deal.  I  would  also  use  the

tripod  more  so  the  shot      doesn’t  look  so  shaky.    I  would  add  some  captions  in  the  advert  so  the  audience  understands  what  is  going  on  since  there  isn’t  much  dialogue.
