JANUARY 5 2014 EPIPHANY SUNDAY Reflecting on God’s Word They were men in love with the lights of night—astrologers, star-gazers, meaning-makers tuned in to the signs in the heavens, as Matthew tells it. A strange star moving across the sky led them into Israel. Arriving in Jerusalem, they asked where the newborn king of the Jews was, so they could offer homage. Herod was less than delighted, indeed “greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with him,” at hearing of a new king on the block (Matthew 2:3). But he assembled the chief priests and the scribes, who remembered that the prophet Micah had proclaimed that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem. So they set out again, with Herod’s duplicitous request whispered into their ears. The star reappeared and led them to the house where the child and his mother were. Falling down in worship, they offered gifts, and went back home. End of story—as we like to remember it. Of course, that is not the end. Receiving no word, Herod is enraged and orders the death of all children under the age of two. Joseph, Mary, and the child flee to Egypt. Power does not welcome competition, even in the form of a child. But God wills all people to know salvation. Jesus came to draw all into the reign of God and to empower them to live the God-life that is the Father’s gift. The darkness of evil continues to threaten but it will not overcome as long as there are those who seek the light, follow it, and allow it to lead them to the child. James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R. EPIPHANY SUNDAY

Reflecting on God’s Word They were men in love with the lights of night—astrologers, star-gazers, meaning-makers tuned in to the signs in the heavens, as Matthew tells it.

F isch–ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer

There are many theories about the nature of the Epiphany star. Some have offered scientific explanations (e.g. the star

was a comet, a supernova, or a conjunction of several planets). Others associate it with the guidance of an angel, much like the pillar of fire that guided the Israelites out of Egypt. To get preoc-cupied with such details is to miss the point of the story, however.

We need to recognize that God can utilize a variety of media to serve his divine purpose. Thus, it is important that we keep in mind that the

medium is not the message, particularly when it comes to Scripture. We consider the story of the magi not only because of the gifts they brought – which the early Christians saw as foreshadowing Jesus’ kingship (gold), priestly ministry (frankincense), and sacrificial death (myrrh) – but also because of the magi’s willingness to recognize and follow the call of God in whatever manner it reaches us and wherever it leads. God places countless guides and witnesses all along the course our individual paths. While each of these messengers speaks in its own unique way, the message is essentially the same for every-one: Regardless of where we are or how we travel, all human beings of every time and place, of every tongue and race, are called to salva-tion and union with God. The Feast of the Epiphany compels us to escape the narrow parochialism that splits the world into any number of “us vs. them” divisions (“They’re not from our group/parish/ neighborhood/country/race/religion...”) and to embrace the all-inclusiveness of God. We are called to do more than simply adopt this mindset; we are also expected to be its living messengers!

Sadhu Sundar Singh was born in 1889 in northern India. Singh was raised as a Sikh until converting to Christianity in early ado-lescence. He understood that God’s saving plan was universal. To illustrate his conviction that all believers in Christ must extend them-selves to everyone without exception, Singh told the following story. In the cold, mountainous regions of northern India, travelers warm themselves by placing burning coals in small vessels. Wrapping the vessel in a cloth, travelers can carry their own personal “fire” with them on their way. Three men were traveling equipped with such vessels on their way to a holy place, Amarnath. One traveler saw several pilgrims suffering with the cold. He took the fire out of his ves-sel and lit a fire so that all could warm themselves. Everyone survived the cold that night and lived to journey another day. That evening, as it grew cold and dark, the second man took out the fire in his vessel and lit a torch so that everyone could walk

along in safety. At this, the third man scoffed. “You are all fools,” he shouted. “You have wasted your fire for the sake of others.” In re-sponse, the travelers said to him, “Show us your fire!” When he broke open his vessel, there was no fire, no light, no warmth – only ashes

and dead coals. One person had given warmth with his fire; another

had given light. But the one who kept the fire only for himself was, in the end, left in the cold and dark of his own making. You and I are called to be the magi of today, to follow the star of Christ and to make his presence known in the world by giving generously to those who are poor or oppressed. It is by sharing our precious gifts, our fire, with others that we will find God in our own lives. This is the mission we carry forward from this season. Epiph-any reminds us that we need to be both Magi who follow and stars that lead. If you wish to contact me, please leave a note in the Parish Office or send an email to [email protected].

Lenten Meditation Books Continue Fr. O’Malley’s Tradition

One of our goals for our Sesquicentennial Year is to publish a Lenten book of meditations based on the daily readings of the Lenten Season. This 2014 Lenten Meditation book will be dedi-cated to Fr. Pat O’Malley whose yearly book of Lenten Mediations were so well received . The plan for this special edition of the Lenten Meditation Book is to have parishioners take one day of Lent and to write a 300 to 400 word meditation. We are now taking the names of vol-unteer authors and inviting potential authors to come to a meeting on Tuesday, January 14th, to receive more information and guid-ance on how to go about writing the meditation texts. If you’re interested, leave a message for Fr. Ron at the parish office

By 1888 the first church (two miles south of the present location) was becoming too small. A plan was made to build a new and larger church in a more central location of the parish. Four acres of land at a cost of $400 was pur-chased by Archbishop Feehan from George and Catherine Diebold on November 6, 1888, two miles north of the old site. Within one month the bishop assigned Rev. Emmerich Weber as St. Mary’s first resident pastor. Rev. Weber had experience founding a new parish with a church and school at St. Paul’s in Chicago where he was pastor from 1876 to 1888.

During our Sesquicentennial year the History Committee presents weekly selections from the treasure chest of our precious past.
