8TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Living God's Word

The pure, hot light that emanates from Christ both reveals and purifies. Like the flames that refine ore into pure gold, Christ's light burns away all that is impure or worthless in those who come close to the flame. The process may be painful and frightening. It may require sacrifice, but we are not alone.

Lenten Practices Lent offers us a time to step back from the

busyness of our lives and to take stock of

how we have been living as a follower of

Jesus Christ.

Three important questions to ask are:

Am I in right relationship with God?

Am I in good relationship with others?

Am I in a balanced relationship with

things?

Consider making the ancient practice of

prayer, fasting and almsgiving a priority in

your life this Lent.

Lenten Regulations

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and

abstinence. The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence.

Abstinence means no meat at any meal for those ages

14 and older.

To fast means 1 full meal and 2 smaller meals and noth-

ing to eat between meals for those 18 through 59 years

of age.

The Lenten practices of prayer, fasting and doing works

of charity (almsgiving) are encouraged for all Catholics.

F isch–ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer

In today’s Gospel Jesus teaches that we should be worried about securing the basic needs of life – food, shelter, clothing,

etc. That’s a pretty difficult concept even in the best of times let alone in these days of economic hardship and uncertainty. Je-sus is not telling us that we need to live in a box under a high-way overpass. But he is telling us that we need to make our trust in God the centerpiece of our lives rather than the acquisi-tion of material possessions.

Yogi Berra once said, “When you get to the fork in the road, take it.” We often try to do just that, to have things both ways. We try to give ourselves to God and wealth, but when push comes to shove it seems that grabbing a bit more material security always wins out.

Having possessions is not evil. We certainly need food and shelter and clothing to survive in a physical world. The issue is one of attitude and priorities. Jesus is telling us that we need to be more intent on growing our relationships with our Heavenly Father and our neighbors than we are on securing our material needs. Often we get so fixated and anxious about these material things, letting our fears about the future consume us, that we miss precious opportunities to engage God and others in the present moment.

Catholic author Alice Camille writes that she is an “anxiety queen” about many things in her daily life. She goes on to observe, “But the things that should concern me more, I think about less. For instance: Am I too complacent in my life? Am I a moral couch potato, lounging when I should be moving? Is my prayer earnest, or am I pre-tending? Do I keep too much for myself? What percentage of my re-sources should stay in my pocket and how much should be shared? I should worry more when Jesus says things like: No one can serve two masters. Two, huh? I wonder how many I serve. God, mammon, my ego, various ideologies, the black hole of my fear—I couldn’t begin to count them all.”

Too often we give our time and energy over to the wrong things. If we’ve put more time and energy into achieving success in our profession, into planning our retirement, or into finding a way to purchase our next car/vacation/HD TV than we have put into nurturing our spiritual life through prayer, study and service, then we’ve fallen into the trap and need to get ourselves out. How? We can start by living more simply and by cutting down on the hectic scheduling that has us running all over the place instead of spending time with each other. We can make sure that we eat our meals together as families. We can put our jobs and the time we spend at them in their proper place and spend more time at home. And spend more time doing the work of true disciples through service to the poor, the sick, the hungry. If we are consumed by worry, we need to fix our attention and trust on the Kingdom of God. Like Alice Camille, we need to ask ourselves the tough questions that really matter and recalibrate our priorities.

One of my all-time favorite comedy sketches is a classic from Jack Benny’s days on radio. You may recall that in his stage persona Jack pretended to be a tight-fisted miser who clung to every penny he ever had. In the sketch, Jack is walking down a dark street when he is approached by an armed robber. The robber sticks a gun in his back and demands, “Your money or your life!” There is a long pause. The silence stretches on seemingly for minutes... Finally, the robber says, “Wellllll???” And Jack replies, “I’m thinking! I’m thinking!” You and I are often in the same predicament: money or Life? May we have the courage to choose Life. If you wish to contact me, please leave a note in the parish office or send an email to [email protected].

Preparing for Marriage at St. Mary We rejoice with couples preparing for Christian marriage and are happy to assist brides and grooms as they reflect upon the significance of marriage as a sacrament and a way of living the Chris-tian life together.

If you are planning to be married at St. Mary of the Annun-ciation, the first thing to do is to secure the date and time of your wed-ding at the parish. This should be done before booking a place for your reception. To secure a date and time for the wedding liturgy the engaged couple needs to make an appointment with one of the parish priests or deacons at which time a date and time for the wedding will be confirmed. We cannot schedule a wedding over the phone.

To assist engaged couples in preparing for their vocation as a married couple the Church requires a pastoral preparation that in-cludes a Pre-Cana session and participation in FOCCUS, a marriage preparation instrument administered in the months prior to the wed-ding. St. Mary of the Annunciation also has a helpful planning packet for couples, which is available at the parish office.

Your Generosity is a Blessing!

To paraphrase Matthew 25 you have heard Christ say, “Whatsoever you do the least of my brother; that you do unto me.” From the Sharing Parish Ministry here at St. Mary, the Holy Family Food Pantry of Most Blessed Trinity Parish (our Sharing Parish), and from the many needy families that will benefit from the flour, sugar and cooking oil that was recently collected, you are to be commended and thanked for the generosity and caring spirit you portrayed through your support of the collection effort. Through your willingness to “walk the talk,” to pitch in and bring those bags of sugar and flour and bottles of cooking oil to the parish for distribution at the Holy Family Food Pantry in Waukegan, we collected close to 200 bags of flour, 175 bags of sugar and more than 100 bottles of cooking oil (See above photo of collected items). In addition, a substantial amount of money was do-nated for the purpose of purchasing of sugar, oil and flour by the staff of the food pantry. Your generosity is truly a blessing, a blessing to all who gave and all those who will receive of this bounty. Your willingness to work for the “Common Good,” is truly an example of your being hear-ing the message of Pope Francis about dedicating ourselves to work-ing for the poor and less advantaged of our society. You truly come to serve and not be served. God bless you and keep you in His warm embrace.

A Visit from St. Thérèse of Lisieux, March 25, 2014

Feast Day Mass—7:00 PM Presentation—8:00 PM

We celebrate our parish feast day by gathering for Mass at 7:00 PM. At 8:00 PM St. Thérèse of Lisieux will visit us in the form of a portrayal by Marcia Whitney Schenk.

Called the “Little Flower,” Thérèse Martin died at the age of 24 in 1897 from tuberculosis, after having been a cloistered Carmelite nun for less than ten years. Sister Agnès, who was Thérèse’s sister and also a Carmelite nun, asked Thérèse to write her spiritual autobi-ography. The Story of a Soul was published 28 years after Thérèse’s death. In the Story of a Soul, St. Thérèse described her “little way” to spiritual growth, a theology anchored in the Word of God, nourished by love and strengthened in the discovery of joy in everyday tasks.

Marcia dramatizes the words of St. Thérèse, recalling her life through the photographs taken by Celine Martin, Therese’s sister who was four years older. She also portrays the formidable Sister Agnès. Marcia’s performance is a tribute to the legacy of St. Thérèse and to the enduring love and friendship between three sisters.

Rev. George G. Thiele was pastor from 1901 to 1907. Under his leadership the church received a new main altar, ceiling and central heating system. As there was no basement at that time, it was necessary to dig a trench under the church to ac-commodate the new furnace. All the work was done by hand with pick, shovel and wheel barrows. Additional space was also dug to provide room for storage of fuel. In the meantime, the plaster kept cracking and chunks of it fell from the ceiling within the church. Finally it was decided to remove the plaster and replace it with tin sheathing to eliminate the annoyance of falling objects.

During our Sesquicentennial year the History Committee presents weekly selec-tions from the treasure chest of our precious past.

St Mary Belize Mission- Join Us and with the Help of God We Will Build It Together “This is my first real mission trip and I feel like a kid. My wife and all six of our kids have gone on mission trips in the past while I have stayed back to work. Now, I finally get to go, and I’m able to use my God-given building skills as a bonus! What a blessing!” Joe Hertel will join his wife, Veronica, and the St Mary Belize Mission Team, as a “built-in builder”, even though Hand in Hand Ministries does not require any such skills. “The idea of providing the family, who will work with us while we’re there, with a roof over their heads and fresh running water. . .well, for a plumber, it doesn’t get any better than that!”, continued Joe, longtime business owner in Lake County. The group of 10 St Mary missionaries will begin their trip in 3 short weeks with a flight to Belize City via a short stopover in Atlanta. Once in Belize City, they will take residence in the Starfish House, a large communal dwelling owned by Hand in Hand Ministries. Their day will begin with breakfast at 7:30AM, transport via van to the work site where they will work with the family until approximately 5pm. Lunch will be served while at the work site. They will return to the Starfish House where dinner will be served at 6. Additional cultural activities will be provided during the evening. You can join the St Mary Sesquicentennial Belize missionaries by becoming a partner in mission. While each of the missionaries are funding their own travel, room and board, addi-tional funds are needed for building materials, i.e., plumbing supplies, lumber and hardware. Please visit the Mission Post table in the narthex and check out the building materials donation progress. Your prayers or contribution of $10, $25, $50 or more makes you a valued partner in mission! Meditation Garden Memorial Pavers The St. Mary of the Annunciation Meditation Garden is designed to provide a serene place for prayer and meditation. With the inclusion of our Holy Family and St. Francis of Assisi shrines together with many varieties of beautiful plants, trees and shrubs, the meditation garden provides a welcoming environment for prayer and reflection.

In celebrating our 150th Anniversary, we want to continue the work started in the past to en-hance this sacred space, honor those who went before us, and leave a lasting legacy for those who will come after. Therefore, we will again be installing another phase of engraved paver stones along the pathways of our meditation garden.

You can be a part of this beautiful garden by purchasing one or more engraved pavers. You may wish to mark the year you joined St. Mary, remember a deceased loved one, or show your joy as our parish celebrates 150 years of praising God and sharing our faith in Jesus Christ. Even if you have participated in a previous phase of pavers for the garden, you may have others you now wish to remem-ber or new blessings to celebrate during this special jubilee year.

Two sizes of pavers are available. Up to four lines of text may be engraved on the 6”x12” paver. Up to eight lines of text may be engraved on the 12”x12” paver. Seventeen characters are al-lowed per line, including punctuation and spaces.

Please refer to the Engraving Guidelines and use the Paver Order Form on the opposite side to order your paver(s) and specify your special engraving.

GARDEN CONCEPT The centerpiece of our meditation garden is a sculpture of the Holy Family. Engraved paver stones lead to this shrine and provide an outdoor gathering area for the community. From this central area, gravel walking paths move outward, meandering through the field. The shrine of St. Francis of Assisi is another key focal point in the garden where you’ll find a meditation bench for private prayer.

GARDEN SYMBOLISM In many ways, a garden and its season symbolize our Christian experience from the dawn of creation to the present day, from birth to life to death to rebirth.

Springtime In Spring, the garden bursts forth with variety, abundance and bloom similar to the way the creation must have unfolded when God crafted our meticulous perfect world, and us in it. The beauty and feelings of contentment and happiness a garden gives us is a powerful yet inade-quate glimpse of what life must have been like in the Garden of Eden when humanity enjoyed a world of paradise in fellowship with God.

Fall & Winter In the Fall and Winter, flowers wither and plants die, and what was once alive and full of life fades away. The ground becomes barren and we sense a loss of something dear. This is a reminder of original sin, the fall from grace, banishment from the Garden, death and life without God.

Spring & Summer In Spring and Summer, the garden reawakens as a place of beauty and happiness. Nature’s power overcomes the harshness of winter as it mysteriously resurrects life from the ground and plants return to their full glory. The sun and rain feed the garden, sustaining it and giving it the ability to thrive. This parallels the victory Christ won for us over sin and death through his Resurrection. We are sustained by the power of his promise never to forsake those who believe in him. Nourished by the gift of his word and strengthened by the Holy Spirit, we anxiously await the day when he will return to restore his Kingdom and rule over his people. Our lifelong walk along garden paths reflects the individ-ual walks each of us experiences as Christians as we discover God’s mercy, purpose for our lives and his abiding presence.
