Trade Unions - Politics Strong nexus between trade unions andpolitics in India

Trade unions feel that if theyare aligned to some politicalparty (particularly the rulingparty), they will be better ableto defend their interests.

Problem: Trade unions become fragmented whenever there is fragmentation inpolitical partiesSo now unions are keeping themselves distant from political parties.

What is the role of trade unions inindustrial disputes? Most 'collective bargaining' takes place quietly and agreements arequickly reached by the union and the employer. Occasionallydisagreements do occur and the two sides cannot agree. In these cases theunion may decide to take industrial action. Industrial action takes different forms. It could mean an over time ban,a work-to-rule or a strike. There are strict laws which unions have tofollow when they take industrial action. A strike is only called as a last resort. Strikes are often in the news butare rare. Both sides have a lot to lose. Employers lose income because ofinterruptions to production or services. Employees lose their salaries andmay find that their jobs are at risk. Usually employers and employees will go to some lengths to avoid thecosts of strike action to both groups. The Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS) is oftenused to help find a solution to a dispute which is acceptable to both sides.

Positive Trends in Trade Unions Movement Unions are becoming substantiallymatured, responsive and realistic in theirthinking and action. Discussions among trade union circles areon issues like productivity, TQM,technology, MNCs, competitions, exportsand alike. In many leading companies (Telco,Philips, Voltas, Siemens, Hindustan Lever,Blue Star etc.) there are unions, but are notaffected by political parties Depoliticisation of Unions.
