San Francisco 5 year Sustainability Plan

Http://www.sustainable-city.org/ Sustainabilityis a word you have to spell to people over

the phone. How can there be a community plan basedon a word that is not in common use? While the worditself has not yet come into the vernacular, the idea itrepresents encompasses an urgent need, recognized bya growing number of people around the globe, toprovide for a positive common future. This sustainabilityplan has come into being because many people in SanFrancisco are convinced that there is both a self-interested and an ethical obligation to live in a way thatconsiders the rights to livelihood of future generationsand of the other living beings on this planet.

San Francisco Leads the U.S. in Environmental Sustainability-U.S. and Canada Green City Index analyzes the environmental

sustainability of 27 major metropolitan areas in both countries

"The Green Cities Index demonstrates that America's cities are thedriving force behind the nation's sustainability efforts," said EricSpiegel, president and CEO, Siemens Corp. "Despite the fact that wedo not have a federal climate policy in the United Statesand nofederal carbon standard21 of the 27 cities in the index have

already set their own carbon reduction targets. Cities are creatingcomprehensive sustainability plans, utilizing current technology andproving everyday that we don't have to wait to create a moresustainable future."

The study of U.S. and Canadian cities provided some important keyfindings. Notably, cities that performed best in the rankings are theones that have comprehensive sustainability plans that encompass

every aspect of creating a greener future including transportation, land use, energy use, carbon dioxide emissions, and water. And whilethere is a correlation between wealth and environmentalperformance, it is weaker in the U.S. and Canada than in Europe andAsia.
