2015 Recognitions

Please remember that NO ALCOHOL is to be brought on Mountaineer Field!

If you are visibly drunk, you WILL NOT be allowed to march! We are on the field as former members of “THE PRIDE OF WEST VIRGINIA”. Let’s not embarrass the group or yourself by being too drunk to perform.

Remember, if you are caught with any alcohol on or around the field you will be BANNED from the WVU Alumni Band FOR LIFE on your FIRST offense, no excuses.

Regarding Alcohol on Mountaineer Field

The recipient of the Outstanding Alumni Award was… Mr. Don Wilcox, Director of Band Emeritus at WVU and the Director of the WVU Alumni Band. Mr. Wilcox gave many years of dedication to the Pride of West Virginia and the WVU Alumni Band. He is a true gift to us all. Congratulations Mr. Wilcox!

A Lifetime Membership to the WVU Alumni Association was won by Angela Arnold. She was also the winner of the Most Senior Female member at Homecoming. Joseph Haden received the Most Senior Male member award. Congratulations to all three recipients!

Injecting yourself into a new organization can be very challenging. The tradition continues on even after your time as a member of the Pride of West Virginia comes to an end. Here are some helpful tips to get you quickly registered as a member of the WVU Alumni Band, Inc.

Becoming and Official Member and Registering for Homecoming

New members must be pre-verified before they are permitted to register for Homecoming Weekend.

After your request for membership verification has been submitted it may take up to FIVE business days to confirm your eligibility; this is to ensure that everyone who participates with the WVU Alumni Band Inc. has earned to privilege.

Register for Homecoming before September 20th to ensure your best chance to participate.

First-time newly graduated four year seniors are eligible to have their dues waived for their first year following graduation. This works by extending refunds to those newly graduated members who attend Homecoming in the amount of their dues ($20.00). Here are other helpful tips for new members

Once again we will have various instruments available to rent for the members of the WVU Alumni Band. We have Mellophones, Baritones, Tubas, Snare Drums, Bass Drums, Quads, Cymbals, and Flags (or silks). Two assistants will be selected to assist with equipment truck operations, including rental distribution and collection. In return for successful completion of their duties, the assistants will be reimbursed for their rental fee and member tickets to the party and game after Homecoming weekend festivities!

For more information, please visit the 2016 Instrument and Rental tab under the Member Only section of the website. If you wish to volunteer please e-mail Justin Hicks, WVU Alumni Band Secretary ([email protected]). Once he has received the volunteer requests he will pick two and you will be notified via e-mail if you have been selected. You can also e-mail Justin for any other information regarding rentals with the WVU Alumni Band, Inc.

Lanyards will be used again for the 2016 season as part of ticketing for admittance to the field and WVU Alumni Band stadium seating. Tickets will be integrated into the lanyard and must be showing at all times. We are going back to block seating. (We listened) We are in need of help from anyone who is not marching, or their guest, to be “ushers” to help with seating. Only ticketed members will be permitted to sit in the block. We need to make sure that all who paid for a seat has a seat. If you have season tickets and would like to sit in the block, then please purchase a block ticket. Tubas and Percussion will have appropriate space to accommodate their instruments in the stadium.

Member tickets will be $25.00 and guest tickets will be $60.00. If it is found that any member sells a game day ticket that was purchased through the WVU Alumni Band, Inc. to someone other than another member, this member will be banned from ALL WVU Alumni Band activities for 5 years. If a member has been found to have sold a WVU Alumni Band game day ticket a second time they will be banned from the WVU Alumni Band for life. More information is available on our website.

Due to the atmosphere of the game, guests seated with the WVU Alumni Band are to be 12 years of age or older. Your consideration and cooperation are greatly appreciated. We apologize for any inconvenience.

After a great party last year, and some excellent feedback from our members, we are once again having the Party for the WVU Alumni Band at Jameson’s at 374 High Street! This is a stunning venue in Morgantown! The party fee this year is $20.00. You will need to register and pre-pay for this event when you register and pay for the other homecoming activities. The staff and management at Jameson’s have some excellent food and drink specials in the works!

As always, the event will also feature the Pride of West Virginia mini-band composed of the 2016 current four-year seniors! We will also have a DJ on hand to play great music as well! Jameson’s has the perfect amount of space and the perfect atmosphere to catch up with old friends and make new ones in the WVU Alumni Band! You won’t want to miss out on this event!

To avoid the check-in lines, pick up your wristband at the equipment truck before the parade begins!

There will not be a “beer cup” this year. All alcoholic drinks will be sold directly from the bar. Water and tea are included with the buffet that is provided.

For more information contact Mary Pici-Harvey, WVU Alumni Band Vice President ([email protected])

Are you tired of carrying around your instrument after the parade? We can help you with that! Those members wishing to put their own personal instrument on the rental truck after the parade Friday evening can do so for $20.00. Bring your own personal instrument (not one that is rented through the WVU Alumni Band) to the rental truck before or after the parade, along with your $20 convenience fee. Your instrument will be transported to practice the next morning and to the stadium after rehearsal. It will be YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to be at the stadium to unload your own personal instrument from the rental truck when it arrives at the stadium.

You may unload your instrument at the top of the law school hill up to 30 minutes prior to the gate opening to allow the alumni band inside Mountaineer Field. If you are not there to unload your instrument it will not be in the stadium and you will not have an instrument to play during the game. In addition, after we perform on the field, if you are not sitting with the Alumni Band you must have prior arrangements for your own instrument. Instruments can NOT be left on the field for security reasons. The stadium staff has a right to take the instrument. The Alumni Band and its Committee WILL NOT be responsible for instruments not rented by the WVU Alumni Band. Thank you for your cooperation.

Parade/Reunion Party Schedule- Friday September 30, 2016 5:00-6:00 pm Gather early on North High Street in between the Chi Omega house and Panera Bread. Limited copies of music will be available. Plan to arrive early to avoid traffic and find convenient parking. Parking downtown is a challenge. If you can’t find a parking spot on the North High Street parking lot, please park in the downtown parking garages on Spruce or Chestnut Street. Parking in the garages allows you to park longer than do most of the meters on the streets.

5:05-5:45 pm The equipment truck is open at the North High Street Parking Lot. Get there early to check out your equipment for the weekend. Truck volunteers should arrive no later than 5:00PM. The truck closes and leaves promptly at 5:45PM. No exceptions!

NOTE: if you want your non-rented instrument to be housed overnight on the truck, please bring your $20 convenience fee to process the paperwork.

Also, you may pick up your wrist band for the party during parade line-up so you skip the long lines at Jameson’s! Be at the registration table by the rental truck before 5:45PM.

6:00 pm Prepare to step off and lead the parade down High Street; don’t be late for the prior rehearsal. The equipment truck will load afterward at the bottom of High Street.

7:00-10:00 pm Meet friends after the parade at the Homecoming Reunion Party held at Jameson’s at 374 High Street. Pre- pay reservations only. If you or your business would like to donate a door prize, please contact us to receive recognition. NOTE: Minors MAY NOT attend. The party ends at 10:00 pm and a map is available on our website.

Rehearsal/Game Schedule- Saturday October 1, 2016 Saturday practice times are based on a Noon kickoff. THIS WILL MOST LIKELY CHANGE (BY WVU OFFICIALS) IF KICKOFF IS LATER IN THE DAY. PLEASE CHECK FOR CHANGES POSTED ON THE WEBSITE, FACEBOOK AND BY EMAIL.

7:00-8:00 AM Pick up your registration packet, music, and band merchandise at the Shell Building, adjacent to the WVU Band Practice Field. A light continental breakfast will be provided.

10:00-11:30 AM Eat lunch and walk, take the shuttle bus, or hitch a ride to the football stadium following rehearsal. The shuttle bus is an economical and reliable way to get to and from the stadium. Enter the stadium via the southwest gate (press box side tunnel). Be prepared to have all cases and bags checked by WVU Alumni Officers before entry. Be on the field at 11:15 and prepare for an 11:30 step-0ff.

11:45 AM- ? After performing pre-game, we’ll watch the WVU Band perform from the sidelines and then exit the stadium. WVU Athletics is working out an exit plan for leaving the field. We will get the information out to everyone once a final decision has been made by WVU staff.

On page 10, you will find the Outstanding Alumni Nominations form. Please feel free to nominate any WVU Alumni Band member you feel is deserving of this award. Once you have completed the form please either attach and e-mail it to [email protected] or please send it to

WVU Alumni Band, Inc. PO Box 1028 Dellslow, WV 26531-1028

Nominations MUST BE received by September 12, 2016!

On July 6th

a group of 50 musicians met at the CAC for a day of rehearsal.

This group along with family and friends arrive in Barcelona on July 8 and immediately went site seeing. We ran into a family from the area all wearing Old Gold and Blue at our concert. Next stop was Nice and we got out just in time but I think all would go back again. Then to Genova and Monaco. Really Monte Carlo!

After Italy we went to Switzerland to Lugano and then Lucerne. Other places visited were Montserrat, Eze, Portofino, Saint Paul de Vence, and Mount Pilatus by cog Railway and back down by Ski Gondolas.

Trying to reduce 2 weeks to a paragraph is really tough with 5 Concerts and such fantastic sites to see. We arrived home very late on the 20

th due to a flight delay from Philly. All in all the trip was fantastic. Thanks to

Anita Lawson, Don Wilcox, Patrick and Elizabetha!
