R Time for FiestaDear Parents, Carers, Governors, Friends, Staff and PupilsMost of you are aware that we traditionally hold an International Festival every year in February. In 2004 we toured Europe and in 2005 held an Ambassadors Reception with an intercontinental feast of activities. In 2006 we focussed on Brazil complete with Carnival. Since then we’ve explored India, China, Arabia, Southern Africa, Australia, The United Kingdom (for the Jubilee Year), Mexico, Russia and last year USA. This morning I was delighted to announce that this year we are focussing on Spain. I must at this

point pass on my grateful thanks to Mrs. Henderson Tucker who has been inspiring the organising committee (D.I.E.D.R.E) since September to prepare for three weeks of cultural and artistic celebration.

All classes will be looking at Spain but then taking different foci as appropriate. This will include study of the Festival of the Three Kings, Valencia and the World’s biggest food fight and the Spanish Costas. There will be a street of food and drinks to sample. You will be able to play and watch Spanish Football focussing on Barcelona and play our

R More on SPAINContinued from page 1.• Focus on different areas of Spain

with dance and music links through the year of Spanish Festivals

• Spectacular Art Projects• Spanish Language workshops • Cultural, Historical and

Geographical activities. All children shall have chance to meet members of the Spanish community living in our region.

We have teamed up with Hull Carnival Arts who will be working with us to create our opening Fiesta. It is going to be very colourful and through your donations we shall dress all the children for the parade including special sculptures representing six different Spanish festivals. We will send some additional minor requests nearer the date.

As always everyone is invited to the celebrated International Evening.

Highlights include:Decorate a beautiful crown to celebrate the Night of The Three Kings.Visit our Restaurant Street “La Carre de Montcada” in Barcelona with Tapas to sample and a Paella meal to buy. Mr. Morris (parent) is also bringing his famous Churros which will be available at the end of the Restaurant Street, an ideal dessert after your Paella. Two

‘bars’ will be selling non alcoholic Spanish themed refreshments.Investigate Spanish Football and even ‘play’ a game while watching FC Barcelona in action. Those crafty types can make and decorate a Spanish fan and the families can make carnival masks for parents to wear. The children will all make one in school prior to the event.

In addition every family will have the opportunity to have a go at Flamenco with our special guests providing authentic Flamenco dance accompanied by a Spanish Guitarist.

Each child will bring home a passport. This gives the information about the different options and activities available in all of our classrooms. I am grateful to Mr. Williams and Miss Johns who have taken the lead on the creation of the passport this year. It probably isn’t possible for everyone to visit everything so families will want to mark off favourites in advance. The activities in the passport are designed to appeal to a wide age range and are particularly created with the family in mind. It is expected that families will want to participate together.

The passport gives parents the information they require to support younger children, who will not be able to read the text themselves.

The organising committee has struggled over the role of the bull in Spanish life and particularly the concept of bull fighting and running the bulls. We are not going to engage the children in recreating either of these activities, but we shall debate the issues around them and enable the children to reflect that they remain inextricably linked to Spanish heritage. We shall however acknowledge the bull as a symbol of Spain in our parade.

In addition on the Festival Night itself, our school kitchen will be offering Paella, served from the Courtyard on a real Paella Pan, just £2.50 per meal. We are extremely grateful to Rebel’s Smokehouse in Beverley for providing the pan!

YOUR HELPParental contribution requested. As parents know, these events are not cheap to organise and are significantly subsidised. The requested contribution is maintained at £6 which is only £1 more than the cost in 2007! However I must plead with parents to support this and realise the value of the programme. There is a form

at the end of this newsletter and sent home as a hard copy.

Remember the funding helps to pay for the specialist support, special projects, costumes and hats etc. I am sure that the children are going to have a thrilling time and will enjoy sharing with you the sights, sounds and colour of Spain with you on the evening of Thursday 11th February 2016.

R THE INTERNATIONAL NIGHT BEGINS WITH A FIESTA PARADEThe ProgrammeThe international Evening will commence with a Fiesta Parade. Pupils will meet in classrooms at 5:15pm and the parade will weave around the building to the South Playground. Pupils will be making masks etc. for the event, and we shall be providing most of the costume requirements. Each class has a different fiesta.

FY: El dia de los Reyes / The day of the three kings.Year 1: La Tomatina " The World's Biggest Food Fight!Year 2: Spanish Food! Year 3: Noite dos Calacus: Night of the Pumpkins:Year 4: Las Fiestas de San Fermin. Celebrating the BullYear 5: La Feria del Caballo: Horse Fair

Each of the above will be led by a group of ten Year 6 pupils who will be creating the central float.

Parents are invited to stand along the route which will be identified nearer the date. We also request that if possible parents/carers bring along the brightest torch they can find to shine onto the procession as it passes by.

At 5:55pm the school will be open.

In order to facilitate your enjoyment of the evening and the safety of all, I ask that you take a few moments to consider the following.

Movement around the building can be difficult when so many attend our International Nights. I ask therefore that wherever possible, visitors travel from room to room via the outside of the building. Every classroom has its own door to the outside. After the opening event on the South Playground or on arriving at school consider not

coming to the front entrance, but rather enter through any other of the school’s 17 entrances. The pedestrian gates to the site will remain open all evening. Please do not bring buggies, prams or push chairs into school but use the outside routes. This is in the interest of everyone’s safety particularly to avoid a fire escape blockage. Please only use the internal routes to get to the Hall and catering.

The Hall. There will be six opportunities to watch and join in with flamenco in the hall. As in previous years we are inviting guests by Family Surname. The order of these is changed every year in order to be fair. 6:00pm Families with Surname beginning with S to Z6:20pm Families with Surname beginning with A to D6:40pm Families with Surname beginning with E to H7:00pm Families with Foundation Stage Children with surnames I to R7:20pm Families with Surname beginning with I to L7:40pm Families with Surname beginning with M to R

There will be a strict one way system into the hall and out through the Fire Exit. Catering has been moved to the Central Courtyard from the Conservatory with a one way system into the Centre Point Room. Mrs. Hakner is in charge in the Hall.

Staff are not looking after children and therefore children must be under the care of a responsible adult.

ParkingWe all know that parking will be difficult, please be considerate of neighbours driveways.

Tired ChildrenIt is not expected that very young children are still here at 8pm unless of course they have the stamina!

I sincerely hope you all have a most memorable evening. Thank you for your support and encouragement and patience particularly if timings go a bit awry.

PARENTS

JOIN IN THE CARNIVAL

We would really like you to join in with the spirit of the evening. We encourage you to wear your own Carnival Mask. These can be purchased quite cheaply or self made. A simple “Zorro” style mask would look just as good as a more flamboyant style. Masks could be worn or held on sticks in front of the face. Alternatively masks can be made on the evening in one of the activity rooms for parents to wear.

As always, I am indebted to the staff and volunteers who give up so much to offer extra curricular activities to our children. Below is a list of Clubs which operate at school. R SNOW POLICY: IMPORTANTThe following is taken from the school’s Safeguarding Policy and should prepare parents/carers for what to expect when it snows. The  school  will  only  close  without  prior  no8ce  as  a  last  resort.    The  Head  Teacher  or  his  representa8ve  will  remain  on  site  un8l  the  last  child  is  collected.

Policy in Practice

What the school does to assist in the event of icy weather conditions

It is not practical to grit the entire site, but as part of the gritting policy, safe routes round the site and across the South Playground have been identified and will be gritted before giving access to the site, thereby minimising the risks to children parents and visitors. The car park will also be gritted.

Children are not allowed to make slides on the playgrounds. Playgrounds are gritted if practical before 8:30am and when not, by morning break. At playtimes a decision as to whether children are to be allowed outside will be made by the senior teacher on duty in conjunction with a member of the Senior Management Team.

Children may not throw snowballs on the playgrounds. However if the field is covered by thick snow pupils may be allowed to play on the field in the snow, make snowman and throw snowballs. Those not wishing to throw snow (or indeed be hit by snowballs) should stay on the playgrounds. The school believes that playing in and throwing snow is part of a child’s life experiences.

In extreme cases the Headteacher may decide that there is no option but to close the school if there is presented a severe health and

safety risk. This is done by the Chair of Governors and the local radio stations will be informed. A severe Health and Safety Risk would be presented if insufficient staff could reach the school or indeed the health and safety of staff meant that they should leave early. Due to the location of the school it is expected that the school will be able to remain open. Closing a school at short notice including closing mid way through a day poses considerable difficulties for parents and will only be taken as a very last resort.

A complete heating failure in the winter and/or a loss of the water supply would however result in the school having to close.

Good communication is essential. Parents receive a copy of specific instructions during the autumn and winter months via the monthly newsletters and the website. Children have the processes explained to them in the classroom. It is expected that parents adhere to these instructions and pass all relevant information to friends and relatives who may also come to school to bring and fetch children. Parents/Carers are asked to be responsible and plan more time for their journey, suitable footwear for having to walk further, wrapping up to keep warm etc....parents should not expect to be able to park close to the school at these times! Parents and visitors are expected to use the gritted paths rather than walk across the snow and ice.

Snow Policy and Procedures - information for teaching and support staff

In the event of disruption caused by heavy snow the prime concern of the school must always be the safety of the pupils and staff.

It is expected that all staff will make every reasonable effort to undertake the journey to school. It is appreciated that the journey may take longer than normal and therefore some staff may not be

able to arrive before the normal start of school time. In the event of severe weather, a decision to close the school for day pupils will be made by 7am. The Head Teacher will contact Radio Humberside and Viking Radio to ask them to broadcast the information.

PARENTS WILL BE INFORMED BY TEXT IF THE SCHOOL IS TO CLOSE.

Updates will be posted on the Twitter section of the school’s website. www.molescroftprimary.net

In the event of the normal timetable being suspended, a programme of activities will be organised for pupils who arrive at school. Teachers and Teaching Assistants will be delegated to supervise these activities.

Rather than a full closure it is more likely that the school will remain open on a reduced capacity. In such an event, parents/carers will be asked if it is possible to make alternative arrangements for pupils. Where this is not possible the school will remain open for those who need to come to school or for those who cannot go home in the case of an unexpected early closure. As the number pupils remaining decreases, they will be moved to other classes or the hall.

The  school  will  only  close  without  prior  no8ce  as  a  last  resort.    The  Head  Teacher  or  his  representa8ve  will  remain  on  site  un8l  the  last  child  is  collected.

R A DIRECT APPEAL TO THE PARENTS/CARERS OF MOLESCROFT PRIMARY SCHOOL FROM THE EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE COUNCIL

The Local Authority has sent the following text and requested that I include it in this newsletter. I urge all parents/carers and staff to read it very carefully. This is an appeal for help from East Riding of Yorkshire Council Environmental Enforcement Team. Concerns have been raised with the Enforcement Team regarding parking on the streets around Molescroft School, particularly during drop off and pick up times.

We are increasing concerned about not only the safety of children but the needs of our local residents and effect this inconsiderate parking is having on their daily lives.

It has been reported that

- Cars are being parked too close to the school endangering children

- Cars are parking on pavements. This causes an obstruction and makes it very difficult for pedestrians, particularly the elderly and people with young children and pushchairs

- People park over residents driveways – this is unfair and inconsiderate

- Cars are being parked on verges causing damage. Damaging verges in this way is illegal. Grass verges are not designed to cope with vehicles overrunning and parking on them. During winter months the verges are often soft and soon become rutted and unsightly

Parking restrictions around a school are vital. They are there to ensure your child arrives safely at school. Current national statistics by the group “Road Safety Analysis” show that with a 500 meter radius of a school, nearly 1,200 children are injured by motorists every month in the UK. This is a shocking figure. Enough children were injured every two years to fill the KC Stadium in Hull. Is this the price we want to pay to avoid been 5 minutes late?

Local Authorities believe this is too higher price to pay and try and reduce this human cost by introducing speed restrictions and keep stationary traffic away from school entrances. These steps allow motorist to see children well in advance and at a speed were they can react quickly and safely. Also children have a clear view of the traffic and have a safer area to cross the road if necessary. Any vehicle stopped in these areas nullifies the efforts of the Authority and places all children entering or leaving the school at risk of becoming another name to be added to the list of 1,200 children injured every month.

So the next time you park or speed near a school, just ask yourself “am I endangering someone else’s child to get my child safely to school?” and “is 1,200 injuries per month a price you’re willing to pay?”

School Meals are Excellent Value.

Adult Guests for dinner.I am delighted that our meal service is so popular with not only our pupils but also with adult guests. There is however a limit to capacity for visitors. If you intend to come to school to have lunch, please do not promise your child that you are coming unless you have a definite booking reserved. We can take bookings up to a week in advance until capacity is reached. I thank you for your understanding.PUPIL DINNERS MUST BE PREPAID, no more than £2.30 will be accepted in arrears. Money must be sent to the classroom in a labelled envelope. PLEASE DO NOT SEND LOOSE MONEY. Each room has a post box through which letters and money (providing it is in a labelled sealed envelope) can be sent to the school office.

Meals are advertised on the website and there is always the salad with two wraps option.

Children can self serve salad, vegetables and fruit salad and can have second portions.

* Please note; there are occasions e.g at Christmas, during the show week, and on sporting tournament days when it is not possible to accommodate extra adult guests at lunchtime. The same applies on the first week in September when the priority is to reestablish systems for our pupils particularly our new starters.

Con>nuing  our  Interna>onal  Journey  of  culinary  delights  “Around  the  World  on  a  Plate”  we  have  some  specials,  which  our  children  can  look  forward  to.

Basketball Match Report Our first time at a basketball match and "Rowsell's Rockets" did a sterling job on their premiere appearance. The sports hall at Grammar School was host to 9

different schools from the Beverley area so space was tight and the tournament took on a four-on-four format with two girls always on the court. There was plenty of exciting play from the teams and our squad soon got warmed up despite a slow start. Panic-passing and shooting from too far away from the basket blighted the first matches but play improved and the baskets started to happen. Charlotte Hutt emerged as the girl to pass to as she took the mantle of team "shooter"; Isobel Long and Sam Dulson played great in defence and Ben Lazenby also put in an impressive display. Josh Willans, Henry Tippett, Zak Willey and Will Page also proved to be nippy and very determined players. Sadly a late show of confidence couldnt make up for earlier mistakes and despite some decent victories we didnt make the top three; that honour went to Walkington (3rd) Minster (2nd) and the winners were Keldmarsh. Well done to the victors; thanks to Beverley Grammar for organising the event; thank you to our children and parents for taking part and a big thank you to Mr Rowsell for organising the squad and putting in some last minute training. Change for LifeSugar APPParents are being urged to sign up for a free app which tells them the sugar content of food and drink. The "sugar smart app", from Public Health England, works by scanning barcodes and revealing total sugar in cubes or grams.Officials hope it will help combat tooth decay, obesity and type two diabetes and encourage families to choose healthier alternatives.

PHE says young children are eating three times more than the sugar limit.

Its new Change4Life advertising campaign, which includes the sugar app, suggests that on average children aged four to ten years old are consuming 22kg of added sugar a year. That's about 5,500 sugar cubes - more than the weight of an average five-year-old child. The app has been developed to raise awareness of how much sugar is contained in everyday food and drink. It works on more than 75,000 products, offering a quick guide to help parents to assess potential purchases that may harm their children's health.

We have ordered information packs for every family and they will be sent home soon.

Best wishes to Mrs. BullessLaura has started her maternity leave from 5th February.

Laura had to contact the school last week to inform me that she has been instructed to start her Maternity Leave immediately. Routines and Urban Dance Classes will therefore be suspended for the rest of the Spring Term.Clearly we shall miss her greatly but I know you will join

me in wishing her every happiness and look forward to hearing of the birth of her second child.

Clearly there are implications for the Theatre Club production but Laura and I have been planning the programme for the Summer and as Laura said “I cannot let you do the show without me” and as I replied “We need you to do the show with us”.All is well!

Over 170 pupils choose to go to our Dance Classes, which the school pays for. A great part of our health and arts programmes.

Warwick DriveA concernMany of you will be familiar with the footpath that links Warwick Drive and Copandale Road.

It has been brought to my attention that both on the morning run and after 3:30pm many parents and children are using Warwick Drive as

an extension of the footpath and are walking on the road.

I have been informed that there is a blind spot for traffic at this point and a near miss has been witnessed. I urge everyone therefore to take extra care on this part of the journey and to use the pavement, not the road to walk on.
