The Southern Luncheon at Twin Oaks Farm was a
great event with more than 160 ladies and a few men present.
Be sure to see article on winners for table entries. All of the
tables were beautiful. The proceeds from the luncheon will
benefit the Garden Club of Georgia Blue Star/Gold Star
Marker and the Scholarship programs. The Blue Star
Memorial Program honors service men and women who have
served in the armed services of the United States. The Gold
Star Marker, introduced into the program last year, honors
families who have lost loved ones while they were defending
our country. Scholarship funds are for deserving Georgia
college students majoring in any garden related subject.
The Expression, or calendar as we have known it, is
also for our Scholarship program. The 2016 Expression was a
sell out and the 2017 will sell out fast so place your order
early!
The South Georgia Native Plant and Wildflower
Symposium will be Wednesday March 23rd in Tifton on the
UGA Campus. You will not want to miss the regionally known
speakers. Also there will be hard to find native plants for sale
so arrive early.
Everyone is invited to attend the Garden Club of
Georgia Convention in Macon on April 13 & 14, 2016 for a fun
filled two days of meetings, fellowship and Awards Banquet.

CAMELLIA DISTRICT BOARD MEETING
January 26, 2016, Quitman, Georgia
Camellia District Board was held on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at St. James Episcopal Church
Fellowship Hall in Quitman, Georgia. Meeting was hosted by Quitman Garden Club.
Registration and coffee began at 9:45, Meeting at 10a.m. followed by Lunch at 12 noon. After business meeting and reports members were served a delicious lunch by members of Quitman Garden Club. Following lunch Carol Selph, Camellia Society Judge, presented a program entitled The Rita Campbell Story (A story of a seed, the flower, people and Betty Sheffield). Members also enjoyed preserving camellias in wax and taking them home to share.

The Camellia District of the Garden Club of Georgia held their fundraiser “Southern Luncheon at Twin Oaks
Farm” on February 10 in the Grand Barn at Twin Oaks Farm in Pineview. Genie McCook, Ti7on & Anita Allen,
Fitzgerald, chaired the event. The proceeds of the luncheon benefited the Garden Club of Georgia’s Blue Star/Gold
Star Marker and Scholarship programs. The Blue Star Memorial Program honors service men and women who have
served in the armed services of the United States. The Gold Star Marker,
introduced into the program last year, honors those families that have lost
a loved one while defending our country. The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc.
provides scholarships to deserving Georgia college students majoring in any
garden-related subject (from agricultural science to landscape architecture
and more) in an accredited college or university in Georgia.
The guest speaker was long-0me Georgia Public Television and
Atlanta radio host Walter Reeves. Known as “The Georgia Gardener”, Mr.
Reeves enlightened the audience of over 160 women (and a few of their
husbands) on how to prepare for spring plan0ng. His “what to
do” and “what not to do” was educa0onal and entertaining. Over
20 garden clubs from Macon to Hawkinsville to Thomasville set
and decorated their tables. It was a beau0ful sight to behold.
Prizes were awarded to the best tables in the categories shown in
photos.
Other special guests included Martha Price, President, The
Garden Club of Georgia and Marie Andrews, The Garden Club of
Georgia-Camellia District Director. The delicious lunch
was provided by B. J. Smith Catering of Ti7on. The
Garden Club of Georgia-Camellia District wishes to
thank the sponsor of this event, Karen and Tom Hunt of
Twin Oaks Farm Weddings. It was a cold and blustery
day but that didn’t put frost on the hearts of those
surrounded by the warmth of good gardening friends.

MAGNOLIA GARDEN CLUB CELEBRATES ARBOR DAY AT OKAPILCO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Moultrie, Georgia The Magnolia Garden Club planted a Little Gem Magnolia Tree at the
Okapilco Elementary School on Friday, February 19th, 2016 in observance of Georgia
Arbor Day. This day is set aside to reflect on the importance of trees in Georgia and
across our nation. The first Arbor day was proclaimed in December 1890. J, Sterling
Morton began Arbor Day in Nebreska, 1872. In 1941, the Georgia General Assembly
set the third Friday in February as the day of our state Arbor Day.
Trees are planted on this day to help clean the air and water, beautify neighborhoods, provide homes for
wildlife, conserve energy, prevent soil erosion and leave a legacy for future generations.
Eric Croft, principal of Okapilco school, gave his time with many of his students to be present at the tree
planting. Taking part in the ceremony was Okapilco's youngest Pre-K students, outstanding students from each
grade, teachers, staff, and ladies from the Magnolia Garden Club and others who helped in the process. Randy
Buckner dug the hole to plant the tree, Tracey Cato purchased the tree, Judd Cato assisted with the planting and the
Magnolia Garden Club donated the tree.
Thanks to the Georgia Forestry Commission for
donating the 50 pine tree seedlings for the students to take
home and plant. Jonah Hagin read the poem "Trees", by
Joyce Kilmer. Caleb Murphy read the article on Arbor
Day. Miller Tompkins, Jonah Hagin, Caleb Murphy and
Claire Combs, from the Beta Club, assisted in the plant-
ing. Magnolia Garden Club sponsored the "Smokey the
Bear" and "Woodsy the Owl" poster contest and poetry

Arbor Day with a celebration at the Thomas-
ville Garden Center, on Friday Feb. 19, 2016
with Rambler Rose Garden Club Chairing the
event. Gale Melton, President of TGCI
welcomed guests which included Thomasville
Mayor Hobbs, Georgia Forestry Commission
personnel, and 120+ students from Jerger

walls at the garden center.

Arbor Day Celebration 2016
Dogwood Garden Club, Valdosta
Sallas Mahone Elementary School Fifth Grade Classes from
Mrs. Langston and Mrs. Green, recently celebrated Arbor Day. The
students learned about the History of Arbor Day. The activities
included brainstorming ideas with questions and answers about the
importance of trees and how to care for trees. The students
participated in a poster contest with awards for the winning posters
and certificates. They also watched videos of unusual and interesting
trees around the world and where chocolate comes from. A sample
of fresh organic cacao bar was passed around. Afterwards the
students were treated to chocolate candy kisses. A local forest ranger
was invited and he distributed tree
saplings to the students and teachers
to be planted in their homes. The
special event culminated with
students sampling sweet Kumquats, a type of citrus, and planting
a tree near the Club school garden. Inday Bauer, President and
members of the Dogwood Garden Club of Valdosta presented the
program.

WOW - the importance of Native Plants is becoming more and more apparent. Our pollinators need
help and water conservation is always at the forefront. Native plants are ideally suited for our local environ-
ments and therefore can more easily thrive in Georgia – handling the variation in drought and heavy rains
that occur here seasonally. The plants have already adapted to the native soil and require less water and they
are perfect for attracting local pollinators, providing both nectar and food for their young.
UGA has a program called the Georgia Native Plant Initiative (GNPI) and it is a networking program
for promoting the use of Georgia native plants in all kinds of gardening. Macon became the first city in
Georgia to take the initiative and use native plants in their public parks and spaces. Your city or garden
club can do the same by planting native plants.

Studies is the State Botanic Garden's headquarters for
native plant restoration, conservation, education,
production and safeguarding.

George Vellidis, a professor with the University of Georgia, will speak on water issues. Each decade brings
innova0on, but in the last two decades — powered by wireless communica0ons technology and GPS
satellites — Dr. George Vellidis has helped usher in a revolu0on in agricultural technology that is changing
the way the na0on farms.
Ania Majewska is a graduate student and PhD candidate from the University of Georgia. Ania is inves0-
ga0ng the effects of the human-altered habitats on bu,erfly popula0on abundance and health. Her research
focuses on the effects of bu,erfly gardens on popula0on dynamics of four common bu,erfly species.
Bill Hilton, an award winning educator from South Carolina, will present on humming birds. The symposium
falls two weeks a7er his 2016 expedi0on to Belize, so he will have “new” news to report about his humming-
bird work in the Neotropics.

National Garden Club Flower Show Judges Symposium

Oak Grove, near Newnan GA in Coweta County, GA,
Fundraiser for The Garden Clubs of Georgia, Inc., for 2016
Oak Grove will be the focus of the HH&G fundrais-er. Owned by George and Liz Tedder since 1983,
the GCG tour will include not only the gardens but also the house itself, built in the early 1800’s and
lovingly restored by the Tedders. The house, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has a
traditional farmhouse layout, with 4 rooms up and down and central hallway, originally heated by 4 huge chimneys with their fireplaces. Mrs. Tedder is
in the process of writing a book about the discovery, renewal, and years of living in the house, and the
continued growth of the gardens.
This property was on the very first GCG Historic House and Garden tour set up by James Cothran, and the cemetery garden and other gardens have been greatly expanded in the last 20 or so years. Docent-led
tours of both the house and of the gardens, an "interpretive restoration" of a plantation landscape, will be held all day.
The $35 ticket individual ticket brings you the beauty of the gardens, the uniqueness of the house,
and a boxed lunch at midday on the grounds. Saturday April 30, 2016, from 10a.m. to 4p.m. Advance-purchase tickets are $35, including lunch, and can be obtained from Emily Wilbert, phone 770-502-8381. Checks made payable to The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc., and mailed to E. Wilbert,
206 E. Camp St., Moreland GA 30259. Deadline is April 15.
With Appreciation to you! The GCG Scholarship Committee wishes to extend a big THANK YOU to
all of our participants in the Dollars Educate Scholars Fundraiser. This new
campaign was a huge success in raising an additional $7,279.17. Combined
with the generous contributions made by clubs and individuals, the Scholarship
Committee has awarded a record breaking $72,000. in GCG Scholarships to
22 very deserving students! The collective donations of our 34 Named Scholarships, along with Patrons,
club donations, Honorariums, Memorials and of course the $1.00 from so many members have made all
the difference in the lives of these students. You will notice that 10% additional funds came from our
Dollars Educate Scholars fundraiser!
We are now officially into the new GCG Scholarship giving period. We will continue with our
scholarship gifts as listed above, including Dollars Educate Scholars. What a great way for each member
to play a role in the success of a young person dedicated to the same mission as The Garden Club of
Georgia, Inc., Beautification, Conservation & Education. Again, our sincere thanks to all! The GCG

April 13-14, 2016
The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc., Annual Meeting & Convention, “Gardening Passion” will be
held in Macon at the Marriott City Center and the adjoining Edgar H. Wilson Convention Centre.
The Dogwood District is busy planning an entertaining 24 hours of fun and education, beginning
with several workshops Wednesday afternoon. An Awards Banquet will highlight Wednesday
evening, with a business meeting planned for Thursday morning. The Life Member Luncheon at
noon will conclude the 2016 convention.
Be sure to arrive on Wednesday afternoon so you can enjoy the workshops: “Nurturing the Passion”
#1- Dr. Wilf Nicholls will share the news of the Children’s Garden at SBG.
#2- Tommy Alden will educate us on the use of Camellias in our garden, and
#3- Johnny Berry will delight us with information on African Violets.
Shopping with our vendors will be great fun. Viewing the exhibits and visiting with friends from
across the state is always a treat.
Of course, we are excited about the Awards Banquet Wednesday evening - a chance to
congratulate so many hard-working clubs.
Thursday morning is our short business meeting, followed by the Life Member Luncheon,
“Devotion to the Passion”.
