Election Fever Hits the StreetsWITH the Scottish Parliamentary Election taking place next month the candidates have been out drumming up support throughout the area. Earlier this week the Re-Gen caught up with the Paul Martin band-wagon in Riddrie as the team met the voters. Letters to the editorSir, I saw your paper in a shop in Lambhill and decided to write to you. I am almost 80 years old and let me say firstly, I am proud to be British but it seems that being British in Glasgow at the moment is not deemed popular. Take for example Walter Hamilton who stood at the last election. He was an ex regular army soldier and one of Scotland’s unsung heroes. He risked life and limb for his country yet was pilloried when he stood for election.I have worked all my life to provide for my family as an HGV driver giving them things that I never got living in the Garscube Road. I am deaf now and blind in one eye plus I can’t walk without the aid of elbow crutches and even then it is more a “Hirple” than a walk. I am also an ex soldier like Walter and have travelled the world with the Army over the years. What is really annoying me at the moment is that recently I have been getting menaced by a group of people who have tried to intimidate me and they smashed my window with a piece of wood. They also stole a can of white paint and scribbled their initials on the footpath then threw the can at my window. The police came and took the can as evidence but I have heard no more about it. I blame those “Left-Wingers” who seem to get away with everything but if you stand up as British you are castigated. I’ve written to your paper about these things that are happening because when I’ve written to the “Quality” press they have just ignored me. The opinions and experiences of us working class people are demonised by the “Middle-Class” yobs, yet if the things being done to us were happening to the so-called “ethnic minorities” they would make front page headlines, but there again Who Really Cares? Harry Mullin Lambhill

The Power To Put Our Communities Back To WorkTravelling around Maryhill & Springburn as a parliamentary candidate has been enjoyable but frustrating. People are worried about job security and the continuous erosion the facilities which allow communities to thrive, like schools, community centres and local shops. In this constituency voters have a choice between the Labour Party - who people used to trust to protect community values - and the SNP who are standing on a proven record of protecting communities. The choice is a clear choice. The SNP has Scotland specific policies for economic growth. Employment in Scotland is rising and unemployment is falling. This has been the trend for months now, whilst in England these trends are opposite. In Scotland, the SNP has frozen the council tax for the last 4 years and the next 2 years whilst it has risen in England under both Labour and Tory/ Lib Dems. We have abolished prescription

charges whilst UK Governments have hiked them up, and we ruled out university tuition fees whilst in England they can now cost £9,000 a year - ensuring that children from poorer homes will never have the chances of their parents. It is the SNP alone who take a different stance.People I have spoken to in Maryhill and Springburn say that New Labour’s economic good times were something they heard about on the TV. Our communities were still blighted with poverty and high unemployment. They want local politicians to stand up to the Tories, to protect local jobs and to deliver quality local services. As your local MSP I will fight every day to make our communities better.

RSBi wins contract to kit out ‘athletes’ villages’A Springburn based manufacturing company has crossed the finishing line in its bid to secure a near quarter-million-pound contract supplying furniture for the world’s largest youth sporting event. Royal Strathclyde Blindcraft Industries (RSBi) – the UK’s largest and one of Europe’s leading assisted manufacturing facilities – will provide bunk beds, mattresses and bedding for the living quarters housing those taking part in the 45th International Children’s Games. The event takes place at a series of venues across Lanarkshire in August, with up to 1,500 competitors aged 12 to 15 expected to participate. The youngsters will be accompanied by coaches, administrators and delegates from around 80 cities worldwide. RSBi’s order – won following a competitive tendering process – is for 200 hanging rails, 600 bunk beds, 1,200 mattresses and 1,200 bedding sets. The furniture will be used to convert classrooms into dormitories during the school summer holidays at the following new-build high schools across Lanarkshire: St Andrew’s in Coatbridge, Holy Cross in Hamilton, and East Kilbride-based St Andrew’s & St Bride’s. The contract will help to sustain inclusive job opportunities for disabled people, and was awarded under Article 19 of the Public Procurement Directive, which effectively reserves contracts for supported organisations where more than half of the workforce has a disability. After the games have finished, the local authorities have pledged to make use of the furniture in facilities such as homeless units, ensuring the community will continue to benefit long after the games are over. Jackie Burns, deputy leader of South Lanarkshire Council and joint chair of the organising committee, said: “This is great news as the benefits will be felt throughout

Lanarkshire long after the Games. We will be providing high standard accommodation for the athletes before using it, as part of our Games legacy plan, in facilities that will assist our communities.” Jim Smith, deputy leader of North Lanarkshire Council and joint chair of the organising committee, said: “We are delighted RSBi successfully won the tender. We want to ensure the athletes and coaches are able to rest and recuperate in comfortable surroundings and I’m confident RSBi will deliver to a very high standard.” Willie Docherty is managing director of City Building – one of Scotland’s leading construction companies – which operates RSBi. He said: “This contract is a fantastic piece of business for RSBi and provides the opportunity to be involved in the delivery of a prestigious international event. “It is also an endorsement of the exceptionally high production standards of the RSBi workforce and I would urge more public bodies in Scotland to put the community first and reserve contracts for assisted manufacturing facilities under Article 19.” He added: “We are very excited by the prospect of contributing to a successful event and a lasting legacy for Lanarkshire by supplying this furniture.” RSBi employs 260 workers, of whom more than 50 per cent have a disability. It is operated by City Building.

Dear Sir,

With just over two weeks left to polling day in the Scottish Parliament elections I thought that your readers might be a bit fed up with politicians of all parties criticising one another at every opportunity. I know from my casework that employment and bus services are two of the most important issues for people in our communities so I thought that I would outline the positive measures Scottish Labour would take in respect of these two important issues. Scottish Labour will guarantee an apprenticeship to every suitably qualified young person who wants one. With skills shortages in several areas and a 349% increase in the last two years in the number of 18-24 year olds out of work for 12 months or more this is a vital step. We cannot afford a return to the 1980s. We will also re regulate the buses to ensure that bus services meet the needs of all our communities. We want to see a better service for all and improvements in weekend and evening services particularly. For more information about Labour’s other pledges click on www.scottishlabour.org.ukYour sincerely,Patricia Ferguson,Scottish Labour Candidate,Glasgow Maryhill and Springburn

Margaret Curran MP and Frank McAveety MSP high-light the proposed changes to vital community lifelineMargaret Curran and Frank McAveety visited Baillieston post office at the weekend to congratulate Mark Adrian and his staff on the service run from and the success of Baillieston Post Office. They know how valued the local post office is to the people of Baillieston. This is great news in Baillieston but legislation recently passed in the House of Commons will mean the privatisation of Royal Mail. This leads to doubts over the future of the Post Office network which can no longer be guaranteed in the years to come. Margaret who spoke in the debate made clear that the legislation is a big mistake and is not supported by the public. Margaret and Frank took the opportunity to make passing shoppers aware of the change to legislation and asked for them to pledge the support by signing a petition. Barlanark Post Office is currently for sale and unless a buyer is found its fate remains uncertain. Margaret Curran says “

Urban Post Offices often face different challenges from those in rural communities, they too deal with isolation and represent a lifeline to their communities. We need to take action now to ensure that we do not end up in a situation on which a large retailer steps in and takes over the service. An elderly

person living in Barlanark may be unable to get to any of the large retailers in the community. A single mother with 3 children and without a car relies on local services that the Post Office provides. This legislation is a forerunner of many Post Office closures because we are not taking the necessary

steps to protect the service.”Frank McAveety says “ Privatisation of the Royal Mail has the long term threat to jobs and services at a local level. I will be working with Margaret to ensure the voices of the east end are heard and all the local post offices are protected”.

AMAZING WINS FOR GLASGOW DENTAL PRACTICE AT TOP UK INDUSTRY AWARDS

The team at Spring Grove Clinic in Barrachnie Road Garrowhill is celebrating the fantastic achievement of winning two of the top UK Private Dentistry Awards of 2010, namely Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care. It was also awarded runner up in Best Community Charity Project and Outstanding Individual of the Year along with being shortlisted for Most Attractive Practice and Best Team. Winning the Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care Awards is a great endorsement of the Spring Grove Clinic teams’ commitment to providing affordable, value for money, community based, professional family oral and dental health care, advice, support and treatment to an exceptionally high standard. The award winning practice prides itself on its patient focussed approach which is always courteous, efficient and friendly, set within surroundings that are luxurious, comfortable and welcoming. Heading up the clinical team is Dr David Cunningham who established his practice in Garrowhill over 14 years ago. Winning these two Awards recognises his firmly held belief that a community based dental practice, where patient relationships and trust are key, using the latest dental technology,

can provide the same level of treatment options, care and surroundings as a large city centre based dental practice. Commenting, David Cunningham said, “The team has worked incredibly hard to make Spring Grove Clinic a fantastic place for our patients. I am delighted that our efforts have been recognised by the top UK industry professionals.” “My focus has always been to provide excellent patient care with the very best dental advice and treatment. I believe in spending time with my patients, fully explaining preventative and treatment options to them and supporting them as they choose their treatment plans. I am very grateful to our patients for their fantastic comments in support of our Awards application.” At the Awards presentation, the Spring Grove Clinic team were commended for excellence across all of the categories, for the state of the art facility, and being a team who strive to provide excellent patient care. Its’ efforts in raising funds to support Yorkhill Children’s Hospital ECMO Unit won the runner-up award for Best Community Charity Project. Spring Grove Clinic is a leader in providing dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, invisible braces, tooth whitening and family dentistry.

McAveety Slams SNP Games Funding DecisionGlasgow Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety has hit out at a decision by Scottish Enterprise to slash Commonwealth Games legacy funding by almost half. Clyde Gateway, the body responsible for regenerating the East End of Glasgow, has been hit with a 46% cut in funding for urban regeneration in 2011/2012. The agency has been told it will share around £6.8 million with five other agencies, instead of the £7 million it was initially promised. Frank said: “The Enterprise Minister seems to be more interested in facilitating meetings for his friend the Education Minister, who he wants to succeed him as an MSP than he is in the well being of the people of the East End. At this very moment he should be pulling a meeting together with Scottish Enterprise to demand that they withdraw this ridiculous proposal and get around the table with all the partners to fulfil the promises made.”Frank added: “Unlike any other renewal programme in the country commitments were made to ensure that Glasgow could make the best of the opportunities for the Games and regeneration investment. There is no better case for having an impact on Scotland’s economic performance and I am demanding an urgent meeting with the Scottish Government to urge them to ensure Scottish Enterprise withdrawal the proposal to make a massive cut in their previous commitments to the area.”

Audrey Takes the Quick Way DownQUEENS Cross Housing Association Chairperson Audrey Simpson attracted a large crowd of local residents and fellow workers as she carried out her promise of abseiling down a 250ft multi-story block in tribute to the Association winning their Second Stage Transfer. Dundasvale was the scene as two kilted pipers performed a selection of Scottish songs for the crowd that had gathered to see Audrey descend on a rope down the side of the building (which looked even higher than 250ft to me). The brave chairperson, who led the transfer negotiations for Queens Cross H. A. emerged from the top of the building at 10.45am to a loud cheer and then proceeded to slide her way down, taking time out to chat to one of the residents on the 3rd floor down. As she neared the ground the actual realisation of just what she had achieved dawned on the onlookers and a massive cheer went up. Audrey was greeted at the end of her abseiling by new Queens Cross Chief Executive Shona Stephen who told the Re-Gen, “I think this was a tremendous feat for Audrey to undertake to celebrate the second stage transfer. We are all amazed at the bravery she showed in sliding down the side of one

of the Dundasvale multi-stories. It certainly wouldn’t have been me,” she laughed. Bridget McGeechan (chair of the Dundasvale Area Committee) said, “We worked tirelessly with Queens Cross to achieve a turnout of over 60% of tenants and secure a successful vote. Now the tenants are looking forward to a high quality housing service from the housing association and to continuing to be involved in the way the Association is run.”

Sizzling Suzie’s Spring SpreadsSchool holidays are here again. Trying to find new and imaginative ways to amuse and occupy a toddler without breaking the bank is exhausting. Taking him swimming today which is always a winner. The only thing about that is you are starving and knackered afterwards. I am going to put a casserole in the oven on the timer to cook whilst we are out. I love doing this as you come in to a warm kitchen that smells fantastic. Because you did all the preparation in advance you feel as though it has been done for you. And since you either washed up or loaded the dishwasher the place doesn’t look like a war zone either. I also peel and quarter my totties and bring to the boil before turning them off to sit on the hob until we get back. They semi cook and you only have to re-boil them for 5 min to finish them off. Just enough time to unpack the wet cossies and towels.

Beef and Tomato Hotpot1-2lb of stewing steakPlain seasoned flour for dusting.2 onions sliced2 carrots peeled and chopped into 1 inch pieces1 small turnip chopped into 1 inch pieces2 cans of plum tomatoes1 clove of garlic crushed1 beef stock cube.Salt and pepper1tsp of sugar.

2tbs oil.

Put the seasoned flour in a bag and shake in the meat to fully coat each piece. Heat the oil in the casserole dish and fry of the meat in batches. Allow the meat to get very brown. Set meat aside. Add the garlic, carrots, turnip and onions to the pan and using a wooden spoon scrape of the stuck pieces on bottom. Add the tomatoes, meat and sugar. Make up the stock cube with a pint of water and add this to pan. Bring to the boil, check seasoning and cover with a tight lid. Put into a moderate oven 170c and set timer to switch oven off in 2 hours.

Serve with the mashed totties to soak up all the rich gravy.

Caramel Apple Betty1 sweet pastry case ready made or make your own using 170g plain flour 170g self raising flour 120g caster sugar and 240g of margarine.4 bramley apples peeled cored and sliced1 can of nestle caramel1 Packet of crumble mix or make your own using 180g of plain flour rubbed through with 90g of butter sprinkled with 45g of sugar.

If you are baking your own from scratch blind bake the pastry base in a pie dish. Fry off you’re apples in half the caramel and a knob of butter. Add a squeeze of lemon to the apple to stop it browning and discolouring. Pour the apple into the pastry case and pour over remaining caramel. Sprinkle generously with the crumble topping and bake in a hot oven 180c for 25-30 min until golden brown , crunchy and bubbling. Serve with ice cold ice cream.

KINSHIP CARERS UPDATETHE Poverty Truth Commission concludes its two year existence on Saturday 16th April in the City Chambers, where their findings and challenges to others will be presented by those involved. The group is made up of Commissioners with first hand experience of poverty, and some of Scotland’s top decision makers. Over the past two years they have learnt to work together as fellow humans. They have explored the truth about poverty, and ways to treat it at its root and have influenced many. They have always followed their motto ‘nothing about us without us is for us’. Here Commissioner Jessie Harvey from Springburn talks about the impact of the Commission on her long struggle for Kinship Carers: There 20,000 children in Kinship Care in Scotland. These are weans that would otherwise be in foster care or care homes. They are a generation that we’ve saved from drugs, alcohol and neglect to give them the proven best chance they could have, in a loving and stable family environment. We are saving the Scottish Government at least £536

million a year, but only 2990 Kinship Carers are recognised by the system, and most of us get little or no financial, educational or psychological support that these weans desperately need. A foster child would be guaranteed these services. Our support group ‘Kinship for the Future’ in North Glasgow has 40 grans and 90 weans. We have fought for our children’s rights for years and have often been dismissed by people in power. Through the Poverty Truth Commission we were able to go straight to the top and sit round the table with civil servants, MSPs, councillors and social work - telling our stories and advising them how

to stop discriminating, use funds wisely, and provide early intervention for these kids who are our future. We now have people like the Lord Provost, Jim Wallace, Johann Lamont MSP and Maureen McGinn fighting our case with us. Most importantly we have shown that we are the experts on Kinship Care and should be round the table whenever decisions affecting these kids are made. We’ve still got a long way to go to stop the suffering and save this generation and we will not stop campaigning. People have been suppressed by poverty and lost their voice. Through this group we’ve learnt to raise up our heads, speak our truths and ask people to take note.

Han Over The Medal AlexA Glasgow art student has been announced as the winner of a competition to design the Saltire Prize Medal, which will be presented to an individual who is at the forefront of wave and tidal technologies. Scottish Renewables launched a competition for art students in Scotland to create a medal that befits Scotland’s ambitions in leading the world in the development of power generation from our seas and oceans. After a judging panel of expert from art, industry and business met, North

Glasgow College student Han Yao Fu’s design was selected as the winner. Ms Fu, who is in her final year studying BA (Hons) Jewellery Design and Technology, was presented with £1,000 prize money and a certificate at the Scottish Renewables Annual Conference dinner in Glasgow by First Minister Alex Salmond. First Minister Alex Salmond said: “The Saltire Prize is Scotland’s £10 million global challenge to help advance wave and tidal energy technologies. The annual Saltire Prize Medal award

aims to recognise some of the outstanding individuals and groups who have helped us get to where we are today – with Scotland leading the world in the development of power generation from our seas and oceans. “I’m delighted that design students from across Scotland put forward so many creative and imaginative ideas for the Medal – presenting the judging panel with a difficult choice, of course.“I congratulate Han Yao Fu for having created the winning design. The judging

panel were impressed by her representation of Scotland, of energy use, of our seas and of the technology and innovation that underlies the great endeavours recognised by the Saltire Prize.”Ms Fu’s design, which has been cast in sterling silver by Orkney-based jewellers Ortak, includes images of waves, a thistle and a series of cogs to symbolise Scotland’s intellectual and technological resources. On finding out she had won the competition, Han Yao Fu said: “I couldn’t have been happier when I was told that my design had been selected for the Saltire Prize Medal, not only because I won the competition, but also because my efforts contribute to something which will make a better Scotland. As a jewellery student, winning brings me a lot more than the prize; it’s a huge encouragement for me in my further study and future career”Seona Reid, Director of The Glasgow School of Art and Chair of the judging panel said: “Han Yao’s response to the competition brief was imaginative and original, reflecting the many dimensions of harnessing renewable energy in a powerful and

visually distinctive medal. “Han Yao’s entry, as did all the entries, provides ample demonstration of the

creative talent which exists in abundance in Scotland’s emergent artists and designers.”

MOLENDINER PARK OPENS TODAYA new urban community park in Glasgow will be officially opened by the Lord Provost on Friday 15 April, 2011. Molendinar Park in the north east of the city has seen the transformation of disparate vacant spaces into a new and vibrant park for all the community to enjoy. The new £430,000 park is situated next to Royston Road and takes it name from the burn which runs through the site. It was along the Molendinar Burn that St Mungo founded his church in the 6th century and it is from this early settlement that Glasgow grew. Local residents, including many of those who have been involved in the project throughout the consultant and construction, will attend the official opening. There will be live music, fun and games, as well as, dray rides, Highland cattle, an amphibian & reptile bus and vintage vehicles. Glasgow’s Lord Provost Bob Winter, who will carry out the officially opening, said: “Molendinar Park is a great new local amenity for the area. This park is an excellent example of what can be achieved when local people are involved in creating a

community space that is individually tailored to their needs. “Everyone involved in this project should be very proud of what they have achieved with this fantastic new public amenity.” Among the changes on site is the transformation of the pond that once was on the site into a zig zagging thread of water that now runs into and through the site from a natural waterfall. The park also has a 400 metre informal running track which will circulate throughout the main site, with the inclusion of a formal six lane running track on the central sports strip. The formation of structural moundings and associated landforms has created an amphitheatre for the staging of local events. The new park also has

half courts for ball games and an area for BMXs and skateboarding which are already been well used by locals.

A youth programme which helps reduce anti-social behaviour in the North and West of Glasgow has been hailed as a success by former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson. The former Scotland international captain was among special guests at the annual awards and dance shows run by A&M Training – a programme which is part funded by Glasgow Housing Association (GHA). Run by ex-Dundee United winger Andy McLaren, the A&M Training

scheme tackles youth disorder, racism and gang violence – and encourages youngsters to keep fit through football and dance classes. Around 2000 youngsters have already signed up for Operation Reclaim in the North of the city and also the West End Diversionary Project. Birmingham City star Barry Ferguson presented trophies at the Operation Reclaim awards night at the Mitchell Theatre last month.

Barry said: “I’m delighted to support A&M Training which delivers top-quality diversionary coaching activities across Glasgow. Each week around 2000 young people benefit from these services – and they are free. “I attended the dance and awards show and was blown away by the numbers involved, the talent on show and the quality of the coaching.” GHA and the Scottish Government fund the West End Diversionary Project, which covers areas including Drumchapel, Yoker, Scotstoun and Anderston. Operation Reclaim is funded by GHA and North Glasgow Community Planning Partnership and runs in areas including Sighthill, Springburn, Milton and Royston. GHA’s Executive Director of Development and Regeneration, Alex McGuire, said: “Projects such as Operation Reclaim and the West End Diversionary Project are making a real difference to young people in the North and West of the city.“We wish the programme continued success in the future.” Former Scotland footballers Robbie Winters, Charlie Miller and Gary McSwegan are also lending their support to programme. Andy McLaren, founder of A&M

Training, said: “We’re the only sports coaching charity in Scotland providing free coaching services delivered by professional footballers and dancers. “The programme has had a tremendous benefit in reducing youth crime and disorder and improving the health and well-being of large numbers of young people.”

Keep Alive and Kicking!

The students presented their projects and received framed certificates at an Achievement Day held in Glasgow North’s Conference Centre in Ayr St.

“Every time I come to an achievement day I always learn so much myself from the experiences of the students and from the work they put into their presentations”

The certificates were presented by Ann Marie Devlin of North GlasgowHousing Association, one of the 4 partners in the project.

The Association operates Keys to Learn in partnership with Anniesland College, the Glasgow Homelessness Network and Glasgow Regeneration Agency.

Keys to Learn is aimed at helping people who have experienced homelessness or addictions.

Topics include healthy cooking and eating advice, arts and crafts, digital photography and computer skills.

Bakere Mawejje who lives locally and has just completed the Keys to Learn course said:

“I’ve really enjoyed the course, its been great to get involved in learning something new, I’ve made new friends and I’ve definitely caught the learning bug.

“I want to enrol in college later this year and I also want to try my hand at voluntary work”

FOR OVER 20 Years the Alive and Kicking project in Red Road has provided vital services and support for disabled, elderly and lonely people living in the area.

They deliver meals to people who, for whatever reason, cannot visit the project and they provide a range of activities including line dancing, keep fit and entertainment for members.

At the centre you can take part in keep fit classes, get involved in the concert party or meet up and make new friends. Members have the option to go on holiday four times a year as well as day-trips.

There’s a café which is a vital meeting place, an advice centre and the Red Road Young ‘Uns perform in variety shows.

The course forms part of the association’s twin-track approach to tackling homelessness.

Ann Marie said: “It is reallyencouraging to see this training programme is still changing people’s lives nowin its third year.

Jean McGeough (pictured above) is a member and also a volunteer at the centre, she said: “This is the best place in the world for me, I love it. I go to the keep fit, I’m ready to go to Spain for my holidays and I’m in the concert party, I love every minute of it. Alive and Kicking is vital to this community and I hope its here for a long time to come”

The project has in the past won the Lord Provost's Award and the Evening Times Local Heroes award.

Ruchill Furniture Project Celebrates A Great IdeaAWAY back in 1989 an idea was born in the Ruchill area and since then that idea has been copied, adapted and basically plagiarised by many, yet those who originated the idea are delighted by this fact. Ruchill Furniture Project was established almost 22 years ago by the Ruchill Community Council and the idea behind the project was to establish premises whereby re-cycling furniture could take place and hopefully take off. Re-Cycling twenty years ago was

unheard of and anyone thinking of getting rid of furniture in those days either dumped it late at night, left it out for the “Clenny” or put it on a bonfire. Just think about the amount of “good” furniture that has been discarded over the years. This is where Ruchill Furniture Project came to the fore, premises were obtained within the old Bryant and May warehouse in Currie Street (many will now know it as Wyndford Locks), but following redevelopment of the site (as we said Recycling was not a trendy thing at that time), the project was forced to move out of the district to Curle Street in Whiteinch. The premises were not only un-safe but impractical for health and safety reasons. The project were not put off by this though and funding was successfully obtained via Urban Aid and Ruchill Furniture Project moved back into home territory at 61 Chapel Street. Continuing to thrive for the next five years the project soon realised that larger premises were needed as the business grew and people became more and more aware that recycling furniture and goods was the way forward, (and so it has been proved as

politicians and others shout out from the roof-tops about the need to “Save the Planet” and the Carbon Footprint etc.....). From that small idea away back in 1989 it is doubtful that even those pioneers of the Ruchill Furniture Project envisaged what it would grow into. Now the project is not only a place to visit for excellent quality furniture and household goods, it has also branched into a much needed place not only for volunteers but also a source of Training and Employment for local unemployed residents.

Having moved into larger premises in Chapel Street after about 5 ears the project gained more premises next door to the original building and was able to establish a firm footing and a great reputation in the area. When “Those in Power” saw that Recycling was the way ahead projects such as the Ruchill

Furniture Project and others were given more credence and the Glasgow Furniture Initiative was formed in October 2009, with Ruchill being an integral part of this. New larger centralised premises were sought for the “Parent” company of GFI and after opening an outlet shop in Newhills Road in Wellhouse which proved very successful (and has again been copied by others), much searching was done before securing premises in the Queenslie area of the town. Local Councillor Jim Coleman at the “Official” opening praised the tremendous work Glasgow Furniture Initiative (incorporating Ruchill Furniture project ), is doing in both the North and East of the city. The opportunity to purchase quality furniture and household goods from GFI at tremendous prices is one that is quickly spreading not only in the North and East of Glasgow but also residents of the South-Side and even into Knightswood

, Yoker and Drumchapel are taking advantage of the excellent service that is being provided. Why not take a trip along to any of the showrooms or outlets over the next few weeks (while the holiday period is here), and see for yourself what Glasgow Furniture Initative and Ruchill Furniture Project have to offer you. You’ll be pleasantly surprised.

PLAY FOR THE JERSEY AND THE FANS!!PARTICK Thistle were three up before Falkirk realised they were in a game last Saturday and the reports of Steven “Elvis” Pressley, imminently getting the boot were rife as the “Bairns” were left to skulk away and lick their wounds. Come Tuesday night at Firhill and what a difference with Falkirk taking a 2 goal lead with a team of youngsters, prior to the Jags pulling one back in the dying seconds with Thistle making the excuse that they had seven players missing. This honestly was a lack-lustre game and to expect fans to fork out for such fare is certainly not on. Little wonder that Thistle are sitting mid-table with no chance of promotion when they don’t know the meaning of the word consistency. Last Saturday at Falkirk the Jags took the game by the scruff of the neck and goals from Erskine(2) and Doolan looked as if Thistle would cruise to a resounding victory but the writing was on the wall as Falkirk fought back and Thistle boss, Ian McCall said after the match, “All credit to Falkirk for fighting back, but we deserved to win.” “Falkirk Fighting Back” should have given the Thistle team a warning but it was ignored on

Tuesday night as the “Bairns” went into a two goal lead with a team full of youngsters who had the energy and desire to win as opposed to a Partick Thistle team who looked as though they expected to win without putting in a full shift. It’s all right saying Thistle fans are used to these sort of results but the time has come to get the team out of a mood of complacency and start weeding out those who think they are “Superstars”. As far as this season is concerned it is just a matter of playing out games as the trophies have all gone elsewhere but of course the punters will still have to pay full price for admission. That being the case then the supporters are entitled to expect 100% commitment in every game. Playing for Partick Thistle was and should be, an honour, as far as people like “Roughy” Jackie Campbell and Jackie Husband, were concerned and it has been often said “Thistle” supporters were a unique breed but the reason for this was, that the fans could depend on full commitment from the players. The problem many fans face now is that, many youngsters who turn out for Thistle think they have “Made” it and are

world beaters. When you look at past “Legends” who proudly wore the jersey and gave all for the team and then compare them with those who put on the jersey and take the field nowadays, we

wonder just how many “Legends” will make it from the present crop? It has often been said that Managers pin press cuttings on the board in the dressing room

to stimulate players, hopefully some of the players will be able to read this and re-act on the field because the Thistle fans are certainly due a turn.Let’s wait and see the outcome.

NG5K: TOTALLY OUT OF THIS WORLD!NG5K is one of the only events of its kind where participants of all ages and levels of ability take part together. And unlike similar running events in Glasgow, ng5k is completely FREE to enter with nearly 3,000 participants expected to take part. This year’s event was another sell out with registration closing over 2 weeks ago. Every ng5k fun runner will receive a medal, bottled water, fruit, and Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer! Fun runners choose

how to approach the 5K route; whether running, jogging, walking, or pushing the kids along in their buggy – it’s the taking part that counts. Our oldest participant this year, Bill Rossine, from Possilpark, is a sprightly 87 years of age and is taking part in his 3rd ng5k event. Maisie Redmond, our youngest, at only 1 month old, is taking part in her pram with her family. Organisers are also asking fun runners to don their best fancy dress with this year’s theme as ‘OUT OF THIS WORLD’ with spot prizes on the day for the best costumes. There will be lots of FREE fun activities taking place inside the ng5k Health Village before 10am, including face painting, sports massage, fitness testing, and the opportunity to visit our Health Tent, hosted by a wide range of local health organisations and community groups on hand to offer participants free health advice, information and freebies. The ng5k route will take participants along the roads surrounding Ruchill Park with plenty of entertainment along the way to keep fun runners in high spirits including drumming group She-Boom, Beat-route, and Maryhill cheerleading squads.
