New Shettleston Halls Planned for Tollcross

AS part of the major £13.7 million construction work announced this week by Shona Robison (Minister for Commonwealth Games and Sport) which will see a brand new six-lane 50 metre warm-up swimming pool to add to the existing 10 lane competition pool at Tollcross, there will also be a new community facility to replace the Shettleston Burgh Halls which were destroyed by fire in 2008. Located at the front of the existing

Leisure Centre the new community hall will provide an extended foyer/cafe, kitchen, function rooms, stores, toilets, a bar and main hall. Since the Shettleston Burgh Halls were burnt down, the residents of the area have been devoid of a fitting place to hold family functions and the like, and this announcement has been welcomed as it means no more leaving the district when a wedding venue or similar is required. The new Tollcross Aquatics Centre will

contain a further, 1000 permanent seats added to the existing 1000 seats already in place with a further 3000 temporary seats in place during the Games. Councillor Archie Graham (Executive Member for the Commonwealth Glasgow City Council) told the Re-Gen, “The Tollcross Aquatics Centre project will bring a world-class swimming facility both for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and the decades thereafter, and a new community facility. Such a venue can only increase

the appeal of Tollcross for swimmers of all abilities, attract future competitions and deliver even more success for the City of Glasgow Swim Team.” The contract to build the new facility has been awarded to Barr Construction ( a Glasgow based company). Work on the site will commence this week And it is scheduled to be completed by early 2013, (We’ll be watching the progress and costs Barclay Chalmers Managing Director of Barr Construction... So keep on track!!).

CANCER CHARITY BOOST THANKS TO CLAIREFIFTEEN-year-old Claire Crawford from Baillieston single-handedly organised a charity party night to raise awareness of ovarian cancer. Claire, who attends St Ambrose High School in Coatbridge, hosted a sell-out evening at the Kaldis in Baillieston on 17th June a year-and-a-half after her mum, Maura, was diagnosed with the disease. The night aimed to raise awareness of ovarian cancer and raise money for two important charities. There was a disco, DJ, raffle and an auction to entertain over 150 guests. Maura, 45, said: “The whole family has struggled for the 18 months. Claire was so desperate to help in some way. She wanted to show that we can always do something positive, that is why she decided to hold a fundraising event.” In 2008 Maura went to her doctor displaying signs of abdominal pain and pelvic discomfort. She was told that she was approaching the menopause and the symptoms were normal. However, they persisted and she returned to her GP several times over a year long period. In October 2009, when Maura was 43 years old, her doctor sent her to hospital and she was diagnosed with ovarian

cancer within 48 hours. She had to undergo a full radical hysterectomy. Ovarian cancer is often diagnosed at a late stage because of its vague symptoms. However, Maura was displaying the classic symptoms of the disease but was simply unaware. Now she wants to raise awareness of ovarian cancer to empower other women with knowledge of the disease in the hope that others will be diagnosed earlier. The event that daughter Claire organised raised over £4,000 to be shared between the ovarian

cancer charity and support network, Ovacome, and Cancer Research UK. While most people are fully aware of the vital work of Cancer Research UK, Ovacome is lesser known but has been equally important to Claire’s family over the past year and a half. This year Ovacome launched an awareness campaign to spell out the symptoms of ovarian cancer with the simple acronym, BEAT. B - is for bloating persistently, E - is for eating less, and feeling fuller more quickly, A - is for abdominal or pelvic pain that doesn’t come and go, T - if for

talk to your GP if you have any concerns. Claire said: “We need to tell people about ovarian cancer. We should have known what the disease was when my mum first had symptoms, but we didn’t know about them.” Maura underwent treatment, but the cancer unfortunately returned in October 2010. She recently finished her second round of chemotherapy and now the family are looking forward to the future. For further information about ovarian cancer or to donate, visit www.ovacome.org.uk.

Budhill Kids are On The Ball

LAST Thursday, Councillor Jim Coleman, Executive Member for Land and Environmental Services, joined pupils from St Timothy’s primary school for the opening of the new multi-purpose games court in Budhill Park. Budhill Park has benefited from more than £120,000 investment from Glasgow City Council and Glasgow Housing Association. An unused area within the park has been transformed into a multi-purpose games court, with artificial playing surface and flood lighting. The new games court was installed at the request of local residents. Cllr Coleman told the Re-Gen: “Play areas like this are a great way to stay fit and healthy. The games court caters for all ages so offers the perfect opportunity for youngsters in the area to get out and exercise in a fun and enjoyable way. “We continue to work in partnership to deliver local green space facilities - from footpaths and play areas to sports pitches and multi-purpose games

courts. “This is the latest addition to the upgrading of Budhill Park, as the council is planning further investment to make Budhill a true Community Park. “I have no doubt the facility will be a long lasting asset to the area.” Glasgow Housing Association’s East Area Director, Andy Ashcroft, said: “Play parks like this one in Budhill Park bring real benefits to communities. The kids have somewhere to play that’s fun and safe and parents can get together. “We’re delighted to be working with Glasgow City Council on this project which has now created or upgraded a total of 58 play parks across the city.”

Margaret Curran MP and Frank McAveety MSP high-light the proposed changes to vital community lifelineMargaret Curran and Frank McAveety visited Baillieston post office at the weekend to congratulate Mark Adrian and his staff on the service run from and the success of Baillieston Post Office. They know how valued the local post office is to the people of Baillieston. This is great news in Baillieston but legislation recently passed in the House of Commons will mean the privatisation of Royal Mail. This leads to doubts over the future of the Post Office network which can no longer be guaranteed in the years to come. Margaret who spoke in the debate made clear that the legislation is a big mistake and is not supported by the public. Margaret and Frank took the opportunity to make passing shoppers aware of the change to legislation and asked for them to pledge the support by signing a petition. Barlanark Post Office is currently for sale and unless a buyer is found its fate remains uncertain. Margaret Curran says “

Urban Post Offices often face different challenges from those in rural communities, they too deal with isolation and represent a lifeline to their communities. We need to take action now to ensure that we do not end up in a situation on which a large retailer steps in and takes over the service. An elderly

person living in Barlanark may be unable to get to any of the large retailers in the community. A single mother with 3 children and without a car relies on local services that the Post Office provides. This legislation is a forerunner of many Post Office closures because we are not taking the necessary

steps to protect the service.”Frank McAveety says “ Privatisation of the Royal Mail has the long term threat to jobs and services at a local level. I will be working with Margaret to ensure the voices of the east end are heard and all the local post offices are protected”.

AMAZING WINS FOR GLASGOW DENTAL PRACTICE AT TOP UK INDUSTRY AWARDS

The team at Spring Grove Clinic in Barrachnie Road Garrowhill is celebrating the fantastic achievement of winning two of the top UK Private Dentistry Awards of 2010, namely Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care. It was also awarded runner up in Best Community Charity Project and Outstanding Individual of the Year along with being shortlisted for Most Attractive Practice and Best Team. Winning the Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care Awards is a great endorsement of the Spring Grove Clinic teams’ commitment to providing affordable, value for money, community based, professional family oral and dental health care, advice, support and treatment to an exceptionally high standard. The award winning practice prides itself on its patient focussed approach which is always courteous, efficient and friendly, set within surroundings that are luxurious, comfortable and welcoming. Heading up the clinical team is Dr David Cunningham who established his practice in Garrowhill over 14 years ago. Winning these two Awards recognises his firmly held belief that a community based dental practice, where patient relationships and trust are key, using the latest dental technology,

can provide the same level of treatment options, care and surroundings as a large city centre based dental practice. Commenting, David Cunningham said, “The team has worked incredibly hard to make Spring Grove Clinic a fantastic place for our patients. I am delighted that our efforts have been recognised by the top UK industry professionals.” “My focus has always been to provide excellent patient care with the very best dental advice and treatment. I believe in spending time with my patients, fully explaining preventative and treatment options to them and supporting them as they choose their treatment plans. I am very grateful to our patients for their fantastic comments in support of our Awards application.” At the Awards presentation, the Spring Grove Clinic team were commended for excellence across all of the categories, for the state of the art facility, and being a team who strive to provide excellent patient care. Its’ efforts in raising funds to support Yorkhill Children’s Hospital ECMO Unit won the runner-up award for Best Community Charity Project. Spring Grove Clinic is a leader in providing dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, invisible braces, tooth whitening and family dentistry.

McAveety Slams SNP Games Funding DecisionGlasgow Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety has hit out at a decision by Scottish Enterprise to slash Commonwealth Games legacy funding by almost half. Clyde Gateway, the body responsible for regenerating the East End of Glasgow, has been hit with a 46% cut in funding for urban regeneration in 2011/2012. The agency has been told it will share around £6.8 million with five other agencies, instead of the £7 million it was initially promised. Frank said: “The Enterprise Minister seems to be more interested in facilitating meetings for his friend the Education Minister, who he wants to succeed him as an MSP than he is in the well being of the people of the East End. At this very moment he should be pulling a meeting together with Scottish Enterprise to demand that they withdraw this ridiculous proposal and get around the table with all the partners to fulfil the promises made.”Frank added: “Unlike any other renewal programme in the country commitments were made to ensure that Glasgow could make the best of the opportunities for the Games and regeneration investment. There is no better case for having an impact on Scotland’s economic performance and I am demanding an urgent meeting with the Scottish Government to urge them to ensure Scottish Enterprise withdrawal the proposal to make a massive cut in their previous commitments to the area.”

DIAGNOSIS NOT GOOD FOR LOCAL HOSPITALA hundred people turned out at a public meeting in St Andrew’s High School in Greenfield last week, to have their say on the proposed closure of Lightburn Hospital in the East End. Health Board representatives intimated that the Board will recommend to Nicola Sturgeon, ( Cabinet Secretary for Health, Wellbeing and Cities Strategy), that the hospital be closed and patients moved to either Stobhill or Glasgow Royal Infirmary. They then took questions from concerned locals but unfortunately seemed to have gone to the meeting unprepared as many questions remained unanswered much to the consternation of the gathered audience. The meeting was organised by local health campaigner Gerry McCann who helps run a Parkinson’s group from the facility. Local Labour MSP Paul Martin has been working closely with the campaign to try to save the hospital for

the local community. Paul told the Re-Gen: “The closure of another facility in the East End cannot be allowed to happen. The move is opposed by patients, visitors and the majority of staff. I think it is unreasonable to have patients and visitors travel long distances to get treatment.”“I just hope that the NHS managers listen to what our local community is saying. We need to keep our health services local.” Margaret Curran MP also attended the public meeting. She said: “The strength of feeling about this issue is clear. If the health board are serious about having a proper dialogue then they have to listen to the concerns that local people feel about these plans.” The Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon MSP and Shettleston MSP John Mason were

also invited, however both declined due to prior diary engagements. Gerry McCann, who originally called the meeting, said: “I am bitterly disappointed that The Health Secretary didn’t turn up, I have a lot of questions that need answers. She is the only one who has the power to reverse the management’s decision. “Maybe if she was here at the meeting she would understand that people in the East End will not take this decision lying down.” As far as those using the hospital at present are concerned and those who are really concerned as to yet another facility in the area being closed down, the fight to keep Lightburn Hospital open will continue, (although it seems the decision to close it was taken months ago).

Dennis’s Hair Loss means Cash for Charity

A couple of weeks ago we reported on Easterhouse lad Dennis Docherty going through the agonies of being waxed in aid of the Breast Cancer charity. Last Saturday Dennis and a group of others who ran the “Race for Life” to also help out Yorkhill Hospital Cancer Unit, met up in Shandwick Square Shopping Centre with Centre manager Renya Tysler (who’s parent company British Land also donated some cash to the cause). Dennis took up the fund-raising cause following his mother Betty being

diagnosed with breast cancer and he certainly suffered as his “Hairy Body” was removed by Linda of L&R Salon. In the “Race For Life” Sam McConnell, Michelle Laverty, Susan Roy, Tracy Cashman, Aili Ferguson, Lorraine Doleman Wallace and Sam Green, all ran their hearts out in aid of young six year old Madison Kelly who is suffering from Leukaemia. The girls raised a great amount for the Cancer Unit at Yorkhill and last Saturday Cheques were handed over to the relevant organisations.

“Strictly” Comes to GolfhillErin Boag of Strictly Come Dancing fame visited the east end last week to get the residents (and staff) of Golfhill Nursing Home in Dennistoun involved in her “Shall We Dance” initiative which she is taking around nursing homes all over Britain. Golfhill is one of the most forward looking nursing homes in Scotland and it was no surprise that Golfhill manager Ray Ainsworth accepted Erin’s invitation to visit the Hanson Street premises. When the Re-Gen went along to see what the fuss was about we got caught up in the dancing mode but it was the residents who really took to the floor and strutted their stuff. Yes a

great time was had by all and its certain that Erin enjoyed her visit although we never heard that famous Glasgow saying

being uttered, “Ye Dancing – Ye Asking- I’m Asking- I’m Dancing” perhaps Erin is not acquainted with that yet.

Dennistoun Fire EscapeA Dennistoun family had a lucky escape earlier this week when a fire broke out in their top flat home in Garthland Drive. Fire crews were called to the quiet residential street as smoke billowed from the window of the fourth floor home and the street was cordoned off as three fire tenders attended the incident. Everyone in the house was safely removed and the Strathclyde Fire and Rescue soon had the blaze under control. Investigations are continuing as to how the fire started but thankfully no one was injured thanks to the speedy response of the emergency services.

Sagittarius (23 Nov - 21 Dec)

Capricorn (22 Dec - 20 Jan)

Aquarius (21 Jan - 19 Feb)

Pisces (20 Feb - 20 Mar)

The eclipses in Sagittarius (June 15) spell change. Lucky you, you can make just about any shift work in your favor. Travel, both near and far, seems necessary and will likely be taken to further business, so keep your bags handy. The need to leave home will only increase in the coming seven weeks after your ruler, Mars, enters Gemini to stay through August 3. Not only will the eclipses bring opportunities to travel.

Romantically, you are in an ideal position, as Jupiter in your sign is the very best aspect to have if you are to meet your one true love. This only happens once every 12 years for a year, and Jupiter arrived on June 4! On top of that, you have Venus in your sign, and Mars making you one sexy person. Take a little time to improve your appearance, and you’ll be all set!

Your friends and family may not be aware of what is going on within you until Mars reaches Gemini, June 20, and beyond. You may be too busy to share any of the news, or there may be reasons you really do have to keep things confidential. Pay special attention to the dates when Mars reaches 1-3rd of. July when things will begin to show they are moving into a very different place than they were before and you begin to see what massive change is happening around you.

Sometimes we outgrow our goals. We don’t always notice that we are evolving all the time, but at eclipse time we see how far we have come. You may decide you need to have a new and improved look, and consult a hair stylist or barber, or buy different type clothing. You may lose weight suddenly, even if you couldn’t do so before, because you will feel passionate about doing so.

If you are in talks that started last month, things will continue to progress. If you have yet to find the right opportunity, you can begin now, with the aim of concluding talks at the full moon, November 10. It’s not how long the process takes that will matter most, but the final position you uncover that you like. Keep searching until you find the dazzler, accept nothing but the best!

An event related to your home or a family member, in the latter case, most likely a female relative, will be front of mind. An action will be quickly decided and initiated. As you go through this experience, you will feel the passage of time, but you will also have the opportunity to grow, you may need to relocate for your job, or you may need to make another radical lifestyle adjustment. Although something very private and personal to you will reach a final point, afterward you will be given a chance to start anew.

Romantically, Venus will be in Gemini from June 9 to July 3. Mars will be another planet dedicated to boosting your love life, and will be helpful to you from June 20 to August 3. As you see, you’ll have an ideal phase coming up for finding fun and love. If you are dating, you have started to think about making a serious promise and you seem to be moving quickly in that direction. If your partner is not ready to make a commitment to you, you will wait, but not forever.

Single Scorpios are currently benefiting from Neptune in the house of true love, currently in perfect angle to good fortune Jupiter. This month you may meet someone who truly lights your imagination. Go out and see what surprises the universe holds for you,. If you are already wed, you will find your partner does well, and as a result, you both benefit.

It is time to dust off your wish list and re-examine your priorities. Are your goals the same as they were a few years ago, or would you like to delete or change some of them? The full moon will advance the discussion you had then to a new level of sophistication now. Watch to see developments. I am happy to see that Saturn, the planet that rules your second house of earned income, has gone direct since June, this will help you manage your money more effectively and find ways to raise your income.

The solar eclipse of July 1 in your opposite sign of Cancer will be your most difficult one this month, but it will also be your last eclipse in a long series in your sign and Cancer. After the one on July 1, you can sit back and rest. Jupiter, the giver of gifts and luck, will make his monumental move into Taurus for the first time in twelve years. Jupiter will work hard to help you find your one true love. This is a very romantic vibration!

Mars will light your solar fifth house of love, romance, and children from June 20 to August 3, so you really do have a lively social life shaping up. Mars has not been helping your love life for two years, so if life’s been a tad dull, you know why! Now that you have all this support, you will want to carve out for lots of time for socializing. Push back from the computer this month. There is a whole world out there you will want to explore. You have to do your part by being open to new types, for I have not seen help like this for you in ages.

Mars will help out too from June 20 to August 3, by giving you the energy and determination to make your space truly your own. It looks as though this summer will be yours to build your nest. You’ll need to split your attention. You may get some excellent publicity, or at the very least, see the conclusion to an exciting professional offer. You may feel jumpy and a little overworked because of all that will be going on at home, but, there won’t be any way to divert career developments.

Hi everyone. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it looks as though summer has been and gone. I even tried a computer program to upload some good weather for us, but this is what came up……INSTALLING SUMMER███████████████░░░░░░░░░░░░░░ 44% DONE. Install delayed....please wait. Installation failed. Please try again. 404 error: Season not found. Season “Summer in Scotland” cannot be located. The season you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable. Please try again. Never mind we still have July and August. Here’s hoping we eventually see some good weather. If not for us then for the thousands of weans who are off school for 7 weeks. At least with dry weather they can get outside to play. In anticipation that we do manage a few fine days I have come up with a few mouth watering Barbie side dishes. The side dishes really do lift plain old bangers, chops and burgers, with not a lot of effort. The peanut sauce adds zing to chicken legs and most meats.

Very Cheesy tomatoes

10 medium sized tomatoes sliced in half100g Gruyere cheese or cheddar/mozzarella mix is fine.Small carton of double creamSalt and pepper to season

Arrange the tomatoes in an oven-proof dish cut side up and season. Sprinkle the cheese evenly and pour over the cream. Bake for about 30 min in a medium 170c oven until golden and bubbly. Allow to sit for 5 minutes as this is best served warm. I love it with a chop and crusty bread .

Peanut sauce

5 tbsp smooth peanut butter5 tbsp hot water1 tbsp dark soy sauce1tsp of honey.

Mix all ingredients in a small saucepan until smooth. To pep it up you can add some chopped chilli. You can use it as a dipping sauce or if you prefer brush over chicken legs in the last 5-10 min of cooking.

Roasted Vegetable Pasta Salad

1 Red pepper chopped1 medium onion chopped1 courgette chopped3 tomatoes choppedOilCooked pasta (spirals or bows are great)Mayonnaise

Place all the vegetables and oil in a medium size oven dish and roast in a hot oven for 15 min until cooked and golden. Allow to cool in the pan. Add the pasta and mix well. Stir in some mayonnaise to make a creamy alternative to coleslaw.

Bacon and Tomato Rice

2 onions diced finely2 cloves of garlic crushed4 bacon rashers chopped1 can of chopped tomatoes250g rice (long grain is fine)1 pint of boiling water2 chicken stock cubes

Fry the onion garlic and bacon in a little oil until just soft and beginning to colour .Add the rice and mix thoroughly to coat each grain. Add the tomatoes and stock cubes. Stir until cubes have dissolved. Add the boiling water. Cover with a tight lid or tin foil and simmer for 15min and the stock has absorbed. Stir thoroughly, taste for seasoning and serve.

All that’s left for me to say is have a happy and safe summer.Love Susie x

A Fond Farewell to Iain and Anne

PARENTS, Pupils and Friends gathered at an “Evening of Music” held in St Bridget’s Church to commemorate the retirement of two stalwarts of St Bridget’s Primary School namely Iain Keddilty and Anne Kane. Iain has been Headteacher at the school for 21 years and is well thought by both parents and pupils alike and this showed by the attendance at the concert. On the day that the school received the news that it would at last be given at least a face-lift by the council thanks to MP Margaret Curran’s intervention the place was buzzing as the concert began and the show was a great tribute to the way the retiring head and depute

head were regarded by the community. The school choir opened the show with the classic “Lean on Me” and this was given a rousing acclaim by the audience. Following up there were the “Guest Stars,” musicians, Aileen Reid and Julia Howard, a fantastic new talent in young vocalist Jonathan Carr,

(He’s a cert to win X Factor if he ever enters), and of course the inimitable Michelle McManus who once again was tremendous as she breezed through her set. Thanks must go to Gerry Carr who put the whole evening together and to the school choir which was tremendous in everything they did.

Cameron’s Carmyle Fun Day

PUPILS and staff from Carmyle Primary school were the driving force behind a Fun Day held last week in the school grounds thanks to their concern for a fellow pupil who has recently gone through a hard time. Young Cameron Keerns was diagnosed as having a form of leukaemia last December and since then he has literally spent most of this year in Yorkhill undergoing different treatments including chemotherapy. Luckily a donor was found for Cameron and he received his transplant at the end of May this year. Cameron has been a

wonderfully brave young boy and thankfully he is progressing very well. His fellow pupils and teachers have all had him in their thoughts since the initial diagnosis and they all came up with a fantastic idea of holding a Fun Day to raise some money so that Cameron and his family could take a well deserved holiday around his birthday which falls this month (July). That being the stimulus for the Fun Day those at Carmyle Primary School enlisted the help of others in the tiny district including St Joachim’s (the other primary school in the

area) and together they all put on a tremendous community event for the youngster. The place was packed as locals rallied round for such a great cause and with stalls, face-painting , trampoline and even a visit from the police and Strathclyde Fire and Rescue, everyone had a tremendous time. There was even a “Dancing Display” whereby the teacher bounced on the trampoline while the kids followed her instructions. The highlight of the day though was when Cameron’s mother released 200 balloons each with a “Cameron” tag attached with a message. At the time of going to press the Re-Gen has not got a final total of just how much was raised but it has been decided that there will be a certain amount goes towards a family holiday for the youngster and the rest will be sent to Cancer Research. Let’s hope they are still counting because causes like this deserve every penny they can raise.

Easterhouse Lodge Thanks HeroesMembers of Easterhouse Masonic Lodge last Sunday held a “Help For Heroes” presentation day to hand over a massive cheque as a thanks to those brave men and women who are in the armed forces facing danger on a daily basis. At a ceremony held in the premises in Lochdochart Road the members took pleasure in handing over the cheque to John Kerr from the “Help for Heroes” organisation. The Lodge would like to thank the following people, among others, for their help in raising such a tremendous amount, Sammy, Fin, Alan Key, Davy Edwards, Sonny, George and Carol Sommerville, and also Stacy for the Cycle Run, Sandra and DJ Steven McQueen, for

donating his services for free on the day. Following the “Official” part of the day everyone went on to have a great night as the Karaoke machine was used to its

full extent (although we doubt that the next X Factor winner will emerge from Easterhouse Masonic club.... Only Kidding, you were all great!!!).

GLASGOW CELEBRATES THE ARMED FORCESGLASGOW Armed Forces Day celebrations was held for the second year at George Square last weekend – and the whole city responded magnificently. Although the rain fell intermittently the crowds turned out in force to show their appreciation to those in the forces who risk life and limb to ensure we can maintain our freedom. Glasgow Councillors lined up with other dignitaries as Lord Provost Bob Winter joined Air Marshal Kevin Leeson at the Cenotaph, to take the salute as the troops performed a march past to the delight of the crowd. The entertainment in George Square featured live stage entertainment, live music, bands, climbing wall, refreshments,

displays, parades, tea and cake stand and plenty of fun for the whole family. The fun ended around 4.00pm with a great military musical marching tradition – ‘the beating of retreat’ The march past itself took place at 2-00pm with serving personnel and veterans taking the applause of the crowd. Military bands then struck up a few familiar tunes before Swing Sensation took the stage and soon had the onlookers dancing in the rain. Following the “Official” part of the ceremony to commemorate Armed Forces Day, Glasgow City Council laid on a civic reception in the City Chambers which was enjoyed by all members of the services who attended.

St Rollox Bowlers Show Their MettleST Rollox Bowling Club in Kennyhill Square once again held an Armed Forces Day Tournament which attracted a large turn-out of bowlers to the greens. Organised by Jim Clark, John Angus (Gus), and the St Rollox Committee, the “Boolers” had a great day and not only that, they raised

a fair amount for the “Help For Heroes.” A welcome visitor was Arthur Clark who came over from Canada where he has been based for the last 15 odd years, and was co-opted into a team and proceeded to play one of the few games of bowls of his life. Local councillor Elaine McDougall was on

hand to draw the raffle and the prizes were excellent as far as the players were concerned, (Plenty of Booze). This coupled with the amount of £1165-00 raised from a previous charity night held in the club means that the folk at St Rollox BC have once again proved their generosity when it comes to supporting great causes. Well Done everyone involved.

Estate Residents Factor Themselves

IN this day and age in many housing estates, next door neighbours rarely know each other but in the Elliesmuir Estate (Baracadale) neighbours not only know each other but also work beside each other in their leisure time to improve their area. Recently

the residents got together and painted walls and fences to brighten the place up and only a couple of weeks ago they “inveigled” the help of a workman to build a couple of planters at the entrance to the estate. These certainly add to the appearance of the estate and

the residents have further plans in place for the place. More and more residents are needed to get involved though and anyone who wishes to become part of the “Real Neighbourhood” should contact one of the committee members who will give them more information.

WHETHER he knows it or not Andrew Tidser has played a major role in changing the landscape around us. The 18-year-old apprentice Plant Operator is one of the hundreds of workers responsible for the completion of the extension of the M74, one of the most significant roads and infrastructure projects seen in Scotland for many years. Much of the once familiar landscape of the East End now looks completely different, as the five mile stretch of motorway snakes its way from Tollcross, through Cambuslang, Rutherglen and Polmadie, to the southern point of the Kingston Bridge. Scores of skilled workers were employed on the project, and at the heart of it was Dennistoun man Andrew, who was recruited to the project in September 2008 through a Modern Apprenticeship, with the support of Interlink, the project’s construction consortium, and Glasgow’s Regeneration Agency. For someone whose only work experience had been in the hotel and catering trade it was a whole new experience. “I had been working as a chef but due to a lack of business I became unemployed for the first time”, said Andrew. “I really wanted to get into the construction industry but I had no construction experience and

everywhere I looked employers were laying off workers, so I felt I had no chance.”After contacting GRA’s Employability offices Andrew secured a place as a Modern Apprentice at Interlink’s huge M74 construction base at Polmadie. Having passed in operating machinery such as roller dumpers and excavators, Andrew qualified last year and is still with the same employer. “It’s been great to be earning a wage but I also enjoy the work. I’m doing the job I have always wanted,” he said. “The staff at GRA believed in me and, in return, I have proven to everybody that it can be done but it takes hard work and a lot of support”. Andrew’s hard work has been recognized with a nomination for the 2011 Modern Apprentice Of The Year. Andrew is one of 32 young local people recruited to work on the M74 extension. According to the partners the onsite support provided by GRA staff has ensured a higher standard of performance from the recruits. In challenging economic conditions the agencies involved have delivered life changing employment opportunities for workless residents like Andrew who are based in our local communities. In addition GRA’s on-site support has ensured extremely high levels of job retention.

Councillor Patricia Chalmers, Chair of Glasgow’s Regeneration Agency stated “32 young unemployed supported by the Regeneration Agency had the joy of being part of the resounding success of Glasgow Roads teams being part of the M74 eight months ahead of time and £20 m under budget. The south and east end of the City can now look forward to the securing of manufacturing jobs in the city and the potential for 20,000 more jobs coming in as a result of that success. This is an economic triumph for the city. With the further development of the East End relief road, the success of Clyde Gateway and the Commonwealth Games Apprenticeships, the Regeneration Agency looks forward to a new and rejuvenated economy for the regeneration areas of the South and West of Glasgow.”

M74 THE ROAD TO SUCCESSLAST Tuesday saw the travelling time and habits of East End motorists change dramatically as the long awaited extension of the M74 was opened by the Duke of Gloucester. On a day when the sun was splitting the skies it was fitting that the weather was on its best behaviour as the final link of the motorway which will certainly alleviate the major traffic queues which seem to haunt the Kingston Bridge area of the M8 and the long tailbacks that exist on a daily basis. The controversial extension which is estimated to cost around £692 million (although this figure could be lower in the final analysis) and has not only been completed between £15 -£20million under budget but also almost nine months ahead of schedule. The benefits the new road will bring to the east end will be tremendous as now there will be access from the motorway to all areas in the east end meaning future investment by major businesses is now a reality as the link to the motorway network is now considerably easier. Running from Carmyle in the east and linking up with the M8 in the west the construction of the new extension began in May 2008 following objections from groups such as “Friends of the Earth” which delayed the start date but thankfully sense prevailed and the go-ahead was given. The completion date was put at February 2012 but thanks to the companies involved and the expertise of the workers and apprentices, (many of them hailing from the East End of Glasgow), the job is now completed well ahead of schedule. (Bet those building the ill-fated Tram Line in Edinburgh wish they had the savvy and guile of their Glasgow counterparts). Many local people were employed on the project thanks to the foresight of Glasgow City Council and the old Glasgow East Regeneration Board teaming up with other agencies to form the M74 Employability Partnership which not only provided employment and training opportunities and facilitated career progression for local people, they also provided sub-contract and supply opportunities for local businesses. Questions were

raised as to whether the project would ever get off the ground (excuse the pun), but thankfully it did and the proof of just how worthwhile the extension will be should soon begin to come to fruition as businesses see just how the east end can be worthy of investment and begin to really look at what our area has to offer now that it has been made more accessible. One thing that may have been overlooked is that Glasgow City Council put up around £64million to ensure that there would be access roads off the new motorway to benefit the city as the plan at first was, as we are led to believe, to have a continuous road with no cut-offs for the city centre or surrounding areas. Thankfully someone in the City Chambers had other ideas and hence we now have access on and off the new motorway extension. Infrastucture Secretary Alex Neil said at the opening of the new link that, “The new road will bring major economic and social benefits to businesses, communities and industry in the west of Scotland and the country as a whole. He also stated, “The M74 extension would help generate as many as 20,000 jobs for the Scottish economy”. Glasgow City council leader Gordon Matheson described the opening of the new motorway link as a momentous day for Glasgow and for Scotland. He told the Re-Gen, “It’s completion will bring opportunities for thousands of individuals and businesses, support east end regeneration, and help us deliver the best possible Glasgow 2012 Commonwealth Games. Today marks the start of a new era for Glasgow and the West of Scotland with an enhanced transport infrastructure, ensuring the city is better connected both nationally and internationally, and ensuring easier access to, from and across Glasgow. Green MSP Patrick Harvie described the opening as a “dark day for Glasgow”. He stated that “Successive Scottish Governments have ignored the evidence and blundered on with this scheme. Hundreds of millions of pounds have been blown along with the chance to build a city designed around people and their needs. A

fraction of this vast sum could have delivered major public transport improvements and to make the city easier to cycle and walk around”. The Re-Gen would like to state that no matter the detractors who seem to find fault in anything that will create employment opportunities and investment especially to the east end of the city, which in our opinion has been neglected over the years we welcome the new motorway link.

With the work continuing of the Commonwealth Games Village, The Velodrome and the new office block at Bridgeton Cross, etc.... We feel there may be a wee bit of jealousy creeping in as the East end begins to claim its rightful place as the best place in Glasgow to not only work, rest and play but also to boast about. The New Motorway certainly gets our backing,” Well Done everyone involved”.

IMPROVING HEALTH OF EASTEND RESIDENTS

Summer Safety Tips for KidsNOW that the school holidays have started many of our kids will discover a new “Freedom” which they have never experienced before. Unfortunately with this “Freedom” comes some dangers and what we want to do here is just to reinforce a few things that may help.

1) Water is a Magnet to children. Even if the kids can swim, Make sure they know about the dangers that potential swimming areas such as local ponds, rivers, quarries and the like, can hold for them and warn them against going to these places.

2) Old Buildings are Dangerous. In the East End there are still many old buildings and kids love to explore these. One it’s probably against the law to even be on the site (but try telling that to, 11, 12, 13 years) and two, these buildings can collapse at any time. Kids can get trapped inside these and often help is not at hand until it’s too late. If there are any old sites in your area Make sure you warn the children not to venture

there.

3) Kids love to set off for picnics. On a warm hot sunny day kids love nothing more than making up sandwiches, getting a couple of bottles of ginger and setting out for a picnic. Nothing wrong with this as long as they been well warned about not talking to strangers, not getting into strange cars, not being compromised by any seemingly “Nice” men (or Women for that matter). If they feel they are being pressured into doing something they feel uncomfortable with then don’t be afraid to tell them to SCREAM their loudest and Run away to someone in authority. It may be something quite innocent but BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY.

4) Fountains Of Fun. Fire Hydrants are always a draw for kids and what amazes us is that “Parents” laugh and say what real problem are they causing by playing under the torrent of water cascading from the Hydrants. The Problems are, 1) Broken Bones as the force of the water is

unbelievable and 2) The water is needed for emergencies which could happen right on your door-step. How would you feel if a neighbour’s house caught fire and no water could be obtained due to the kids “Having Fun”. Put a STOP to this practice as soon as you realise it is happening, it could save a life.

5) Fields of Fire. Kids with Matches and Lighters sneaking a fly smoke can end up setting fire to dry grass as the summer sun dries out acres of farmland. Not only can children be trapped and panic the damage this can cause can be very

costly. It can also cause accidents as the smoke billows across roads, drivers can’t see clearly and crashes can occur. So check to see if your kid has access to Lighters or Matches and once again let them know of the dangers. In Short BE A RESPONSIBLE PARENT. It is your duty to look after your children, not someone else’s.

If an accident occurs over the holiday period (and unfortunately they do) hopefully you have played your part in keeping our child safe.

Don’t leave it too late and regret it for ever.

Internet Survival Tips for Kids and Teens1. Never give any personal information to anyone you meet online. That means first or last names, phone numbers (they can be used to track down you home), passwords, birth dates or years, or credit card information.

2. Never meet up with anyone you don’t already know. Don’t tell anyone your schedule; don’t say where you’ll be hanging out. No party announcements. People are often not who they say they are. It’s true: 1 in 5 kids will be sexually solicited online.

3. Don’t fill out any “fun” questionnaires that are forwarded to you, even if they’re from your friends. Remember, you’re in a world where everything can get forwarded. All those personal things about you could land in the hands of someone who could use them to harm you.

4. Make sure you know everyone on your buddy list. If you haven’t met the people face-to-face, they may not be who they pretend to be. Also, Instant Messaging strangers is an invasion of their privacy.

5. You do not have to answer emails or IMs from people you don’t know. As a matter of fact, you shouldn’t. Who knows who they are? Even if they say they’re “David’s friend,” David could be a lucky guess. “Kids” you meet in chat rooms may actually be creepy adults.

6. There’s no such thing as “private” on the Internet. You may think so, but it’s not true. People can find anything they want — and keep what you post — forever.

7. Be careful about posting pictures of yourself (if you must, don’t post sexy ones or

ones showing behavior you wouldn’t want your mom, teacher, boss, or potential college advisor to see). Just because an older sibling has posted snaps on a site doesn’t make it a smart or a safe idea. Pictures with identifiers like where you go to school can be shopping lists for online predators and other creeps.

8. Don’t send pictures of other people. Forwarding an embarrassing picture of someone else is a form of

bullying. How would you like it if someone did that to you?

9. Don’t download content without your parents’ permission. Many sites have spyware that will damage your computer. Other sites have really inappropriate content. Your parents can check your computer’s URL history, so you can’t hide where you’ve been.

10.Never share your password with anyone but your parents

Shettleston Housing Association Receives Top AccoladeLITTLE wonder there has been an extra spring in the step of the staff and committee members of Shettleston Housing Association recently, as news of one of the major awards in the Housing Industry in Scotland had been won by the Pettigrew Street Organisation. Following on from their recent triumphs in awards for their new office the Association has now scooped the top award in the “Large Housing Association of the Year.” These awards are aimed at individual housing developments but there are three separate categories for Housing Associations and Shettleston had entered the “Large Housing Association of the Year” the category for organisations with more than 2,000 houses. There was stiff competition in this section with, Dumfries and Galloway Housing Partnership, Hillcrest Housing Association and Castlerock Edinvar Housing Association, also short-listed but eventually the judges opted for Shettleston. Following the award ceremony held in the

Edinburgh Conference Centre, Chairperson of Shettleston Housing Association, Mary Thomas, told the Re-Gen, “We are all very pleased to have received this award. It is an award for the Association as a whole and not any particular aspect of our work. It is a reflection of the efforts made by both the Management Committee and the staff team as a whole, including our subsidiary UPKEEP.” She continued, “As well as being a landlord Shettleston is trying to bring added benefit to our community through the different projects that we have promoted over recent years. Whether that’s promoting employment through UPKEEP, improving the lives of tenants through our allotment project or providing opportunities through our furniture shop, our efforts are aimed at making things better in Shettleston. I believe that this award reflects the full range of our activities as an Association”. Looking resplendent in his Scottish Highland Dress regalia, Shettleston Housing Association Director, Chris Cunningham, accepted the

prestigious award from Malcolm MacLeod (Director of NHBC Scotland), on behalf of the Association, and he commented that the award reflected well on the efforts of the staff team both in terms of the service that

the Association provides to its tenants and the work it does to its houses. Glasgow Shettleston MSP John Mason, a firm supporter of the excellent work carried out by the Association, told the Re-Gen, “I am delighted that Shettleston Housing Association have

been recognised in this way. I am a real fan of housing associations and the work they do, not only in providing good quality housing but in tackling wider issues like anti-social behaviour. Shettleston have had some great recent developments. And there is a clear difference between the tenement closes which they manage compared to closes which are totally in private hands.” Shettleston Housing

Association was set up in 1976 by local people who were concerned at the decline of their community and wished to do something to improve it. Since those early days the Association has gone from strength to strength and their housing stock and new build homes

are the envy of many. The main aims of the Association are, A)To deliver the highest quality of housing services and customer care to residents by providing a sensitive and efficient management and maintenance service to tenants and owners. B) Contribute to the regeneration of Shettleston through the provision of good quality housing, at affordable rents or prices, for

people in housing need who wish to live in the area.C) To broaden the services of the organisation to meet the wider needs of the community, participate in wider action initiatives and care and support services, and to work with both public and private sectors for the

benefit of the community in order to generate the maximum possible investment in Shettleston. The Association is certainly achieving these and more and under the leadership of Chris Cunningham and the excellent committee. We at the Re-Gen have no doubt they will continue to do so. Congratulations on yet another fantastic award for not only Shettleston Housing Association but also for the East End as a whole.

Shettleston Community Growing Project Grows from Strength to Strength

The spring weather may not have been to most people’s liking but it suited the Shettleston Community Growing Project (SCGP) very well. Their site at 60 Eckford Street benefitted from the sunshine and showers of the past few weeks and already project users are eating the fruits of their labour.

Volunteers needed for Community GardenThis is the SCGP’s first growing season and members - individuals, families and

organisations - have concentrated on getting the food growing established. However, the site also includes a large area that the group is turning into a more traditional garden. The garden will be planted out with flowers to attract pollinating insects, vital for the fruit and vegetables next door and a colourful addition to the local area.

The group is now looking for volunteers to help with the garden. Sunday afternoons have been set aside for this new gardening club and anybody is welcome to come along and join in from 2pm onwards. Children are welcome too as long as they are accompanied by an adult. No previous experience is required as the project co-ordinator will be on hand to provide guidance and hand out the tools. For further information, contact SCGP co-ordinator, Marion Bate, on 763 0511 or 07530 985483.

Gardening Tools and Materials Re-use SchemeThe Shettleston Community Growing project has joined forces with

Shettleston Housing Association’s social enterprise, Upkeep, to roll out a re-use scheme for gardening tools and materials. The Gardening Tools Re-use Scheme aims to find good homes for unwanted, but serviceable gardening tools and is asking people to search their cupboards and sheds and donate anything they don’t need. The SCGP will then make the tools available free of charge to gardeners and growers who need them.

Upkeep’s contribution to this new scheme is to provide the collection and storage point for the donated tools. Any items can be handed in during normal office hours at the Upkeep premises at 24 Fenella Street G32 7JT.

For further information on this new scheme, contact SCGP co-ordinator Marion Bate on 763 0511 or 07530 985483.

Upkeep Furniture – Sofa so Good!Upkeep Furniture, the furniture re-use shop at 981 Shettleston Road, is rapidly

approaching its first anniversary. Since opening its doors in August 2010, the shop has become a firm fixture in the local area. Manager, John Thomson, is in no doubt as to why the shop has been so successful in such a short period of time.

“The people of Shettleston – and indeed, the wider East End - have given us the most fantastic support. They have taken the shop to their hearts and very much bought into the idea of a local furniture project, offering high quality items at extremely competitive prices”.

To say thank you for the support Upkeep Furniture has received and to mark national recycle week, Upkeep Furniture is holding a 20% off promotion. If any Re-gen reader brings along a copy of the newspaper during the month of July they will be entitled to 20% off the marked price of anything item in the shop.

Upkeep Furniture is always looking for donations of good quality re-usable furniture and electrical goods and offers a Glasgow-wide uplift service. We are also always looking for the right people to volunteer in our busy shop or as part of our warehouse and delivery team. If this sounds good to you, get in touch or drop in for an informal chat.

If you would like further information on Upkeep Furniture - whether you are looking to donate or purchase items, or are interested in volunteering contact us on:Telephone: 0141 778 9790 / 0141 764 3793 Email: [email protected]

Upkeep opens door to public

Shettleston Housing Association’s subsidiary company, Upkeep, celebrated its sixth year in business by opening its doors to the public. But this was not a one-off event - a new reception counter at its Fenella Street premises now allows anybody to drop in and access the full range of services Upkeep offers including:

Plumbing, joinery, painting and decorating, general building works

Handyperson servicesFurniture removalsUpkeep will be happy to

provide a free quote for any job and potential customers can be assured that the cost will be competitive and the standard of work second to none. The reception counter is staffed during normal working hours or you can contact us on 764 3794

Upkeep has come a long way since it started operation in April 2005 with five workers and one van delivering a range of unskilled, estate caretaking services. The social enterprise now employs over 30 people, including skilled tradespersons and, in addition to estate caretaking, can now offer the full range of trade services.

RECORD-BREAKING VALE WEBSITEVALE of Clyde F.C. have been linked to Scottish Junior Football since 1873, but now the famous Tollcross name is winning praise for a record-breaking website. Founder Andy Letham, a former Fullarton Park player, has ad-mitted to being “amazed at the level of public interest” over what started off as a hobby. Speaking exclusively to Re-Gen Sport, Andy told me: “The web idea had been going on for a good few years, but commit-ments kept me from taking the bull by the horns and getting the job done. “Keeping the fans’ up-to-date as best I can on a regular basis - that is why I started the whole

Tollcross-born but now living in Bellshill, Mr Letham revealed Fullarton Park has always held a special place in his heart after he was introduced to the junior club by ex-Third Lanark winger and one-time Vale boss Joe McI-nnes. He recalled: “I played for Third Lanark Amateurs and had a great time with a superbly man-

aged side. “After touring Canada with the club and whilst being looked af-ter by ex-Third players out there, we returned home unbeaten. At that time there was a proposed move to reinstate Third Lanark Football Club back into the professional ranks, but it all fell through. “That’s when wee Joe appeared at my door and pestered me constantly to sign for Vale of Clyde. I am glad he did because I had a great time as a player, and training was a pleasure un-der Mr McInnes.” Having watched his idea gener-ate over 201,000 hits in almost two years, Andy admitted: “I be-gan as an apprentice webmas-ter, and it is an overwhelming amount of people in such a short space of time. “I felt Vale of Clyde Football Club had no on-line presence where the modern-day support-

news about their team - well they have now!” Through his own initiative, Andy has added new sections within

the original format. These in-clude a Forum, Vale Veterans, Guestbook, Football Links plus Videos, and he has renewed his website url for another two years. The site is not just a front page, but an online service for the Juniors and should have eve-ryone making sure he has the most up-to-date information. Whether that has indeed hap-pened is open to debate. Added Andy: “My only disheart-enment is that for two seasons I have been asking for help - not on a large scale - from people who attend games to take some photographs, and send them on for our Match Day Reports. “Now there is a possibility I could miss Saturday games next season due to a change of work shifts, so there will be an even greater need to give me feedback from both Vale of

-porters.”* Bellshill Athletic have ap-proached Vale of Clyde with a view to ground sharing their Ful-larton Park venue next season.
