Customers withdrawing cash from the ATM machines at the Morrison Superstore in Ravenswood Road and the Airdrie Savings Bank in Glasgow Road both in Baillieston have been inadvertently putting their bank cards into machines that have Cloning devices inserted. Over the past week this has resulted in cash being withdrawn from their accounts from various other ATM machines throughout the area and even as far away as Milngavie. The victims are unaware of anything untoward happening until they receive word from their own bank telling them that cash has been withdrawn from their account. The cloning of bank cards is a very sophisticated business and is carried out by criminals inserting two plastic devices into existing ATM machines. Almost impossible to detect, the first device is put into the actual card slot, this then reads the details on the card and retains them. The second plastic device is then slotted into the opening where you punch in your personal number. Once you’ve finished your transaction and have collected your cash everything seems normal and you walk away content. Once a few transactions have been carried out the criminals then remove the devices and set about making up cards which are then used to withdraw YOUR money from YOUR account. These criminals are excellent when it comes to fitting these devices into the ATM’s otherwise they wouldn’t work but if everyone is vigilant at the machines then hopefully it will deter this sort of theft. Have a close look around the slot where you insert your card and if you see there is a discrepancy around the slot (the device is not flush with the machine for example) don’t be afraid to try and see if it will come out or moves. This won’t happen in every case but it means you are at least wary about using the machine. Newer ATM machines have now got a card slot which isn’t flush at the end (such as the new one at the Clydesdale Bank Baillieston), and this makes it harder for the criminal but at the moment there are still older ATM’s which have yet to be replaced. CLONED BANK CARDS CREATE HAVOCRESIDENTS in the East End are being targeted in a well organised scam which has already claimed around 20 victims. Customers withdrawing cash from the ATM machines at the Morrison Superstore in Ravenswood Road and the Airdrie Savings Bank in Glasgow Road both in Baillieston have been inadvertently putting their bank cards into machines that have Cloning devices inserted. Almost impossible to detect, the first device is put into the actual card slot, this then reads the details on the card and retains them. Baillieston Community CouncilOVER the past months, the newly formed Community Council have been fairly busy on behalf of residents. We’ve had presentations from City Council officials on issues such as Planning and Roads, so that we are in a better position to understand the processes, and to give us the knowledge to try to get issues properly dealt with. If you have an issue with road gritting in your bit of Baillieston, the following numbers - 0800 373635 (mobiles may be charged) or 0141 276 7000 are monitored all day, every day. You may not get an immediate response as a consequence of your call, but we are assured that each request is examined and placed in a queue and responded to. These are also the numbers to call if

your road is potholed, or the pavements need attention. We’ve also heard from Local Police Officers about the various problems and been updated on how Strathclyde police plan to increase the number of officers available at anyone time, in our area.We are, however disappointed that most of our local elected representatives, with the exception of Cllr David Turner, are unable to come to our meetings, or provide information on their activities on our behalf. Many of you will now be aware that the Report on the M8 upgrade to Scottish Ministers is now available, unfortunately the public Enquiry into the issue was before the Community Council was reformed. This upgrade will have an

impact on the Swinton and Baillieston areas.Members of the Community Council are also involved with other bodies, which means that we have access to lots more information from National and Local bodies, and gives us all a louder voice, here in Baillieston. We are also consulting with neighbouring Community Councils on matters affecting the wider issues of our part of the East End.The Community Council meets the 3rd Wednesday of each month in the Hope Hall, Church Street, Baillieton. We can be contacted by email on [email protected], or find us on Facebook, where we’re just starting out, to try to allow us to engage with as many people as possible.

Asda Foundation Helps Drop-in Centre

The Giant Asda Foundation, Charity wing of Asda stores throughout the country, has recently stepped in to the delight of “With Kids” an East end based project with a donation to the tune of £13,855. This very generous donation will enable “With Kids” to transform a derelict building in Annfield Place into a Drop-In centre for vulnerable children and families in the East end. The facility will offer a cafe/meeting place with access to the

internet, sewing machines, specialised play therapy rooms and informal meeting rooms. Angela Beattie from “With Kids” told the Re-Gen, “we are highly grateful to the Asda Foundation for this very generous donation. Speaking as a trustee of the Asda Foundation, Annmarie Rocks, the Events Co-ordinator at the Asda Superstore in Parkhead told our reporter, “We are delighted to give something back to the local community that supports

us and we are only too happy top lend a hand to “With Kids”. They are such a vital part of the local community in the east end and our donation will make a significany difference to their work.” The Asda Foundation is a charitable trust which was set up in 1988 to support local good causes chosen by their colleagues and is funded by profits from the mid-week national lottery. NEW COMMUNITY RESOURCE SERVES FREE COFFEE AND CHATA new café opened recently at Easterhouse Baptist Church is providing the East End of Glasgow with a new resource for people wanting to spend time with others as well as enjoy tea and coffee. Open every Thursday between 10.30 am and 1.30 pm the café is already proving popular with mums and their toddlers going

to nursery. Providing free tea and coffee the café also serves soup, biscuits, home baking, soft drinks at a small cost and the menu has expanded to rolls & sausage, toasties, and more as demand increases. Speaking about the cafe, Sandy Weddell Pastor of Easterhouse Baptist Church said, “Its great that our café is now

up and running. It is something we wanted to do as a way of giving the local community a place to meet and chat for little or no money.” The café is held within the new extension of Easterhouse Baptist Church, 18 Westerhouse Road, Easterhouse across the road from the Fort Shopping Centre.

Margaret Curran MP and Frank McAveety MSP high-light the proposed changes to vital community lifelineMargaret Curran and Frank McAveety visited Baillieston post office at the weekend to congratulate Mark Adrian and his staff on the service run from and the success of Baillieston Post Office. They know how valued the local post office is to the people of Baillieston. This is great news in Baillieston but legislation recently passed in the House of Commons will mean the privatisation of Royal Mail. This leads to doubts over the future of the Post Office network which can no longer be guaranteed in the years to come. Margaret who spoke in the debate made clear that the legislation is a big mistake and is not supported by the public. Margaret and Frank took the opportunity to make passing shoppers aware of the change to legislation and asked for them to pledge the support by signing a petition. Barlanark Post Office is currently for sale and unless a buyer is found its fate remains uncertain. Margaret Curran says “

Urban Post Offices often face different challenges from those in rural communities, they too deal with isolation and represent a lifeline to their communities. We need to take action now to ensure that we do not end up in a situation on which a large retailer steps in and takes over the service. An elderly

person living in Barlanark may be unable to get to any of the large retailers in the community. A single mother with 3 children and without a car relies on local services that the Post Office provides. This legislation is a forerunner of many Post Office closures because we are not taking the necessary

steps to protect the service.”Frank McAveety says “ Privatisation of the Royal Mail has the long term threat to jobs and services at a local level. I will be working with Margaret to ensure the voices of the east end are heard and all the local post offices are protected”.

AMAZING WINS FOR GLASGOW DENTAL PRACTICE AT TOP UK INDUSTRY AWARDS

The team at Spring Grove Clinic in Barrachnie Road Garrowhill is celebrating the fantastic achievement of winning two of the top UK Private Dentistry Awards of 2010, namely Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care. It was also awarded runner up in Best Community Charity Project and Outstanding Individual of the Year along with being shortlisted for Most Attractive Practice and Best Team. Winning the Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care Awards is a great endorsement of the Spring Grove Clinic teams’ commitment to providing affordable, value for money, community based, professional family oral and dental health care, advice, support and treatment to an exceptionally high standard. The award winning practice prides itself on its patient focussed approach which is always courteous, efficient and friendly, set within surroundings that are luxurious, comfortable and welcoming. Heading up the clinical team is Dr David Cunningham who established his practice in Garrowhill over 14 years ago. Winning these two Awards recognises his firmly held belief that a community based dental practice, where patient relationships and trust are key, using the latest dental technology,

can provide the same level of treatment options, care and surroundings as a large city centre based dental practice. Commenting, David Cunningham said, “The team has worked incredibly hard to make Spring Grove Clinic a fantastic place for our patients. I am delighted that our efforts have been recognised by the top UK industry professionals.” “My focus has always been to provide excellent patient care with the very best dental advice and treatment. I believe in spending time with my patients, fully explaining preventative and treatment options to them and supporting them as they choose their treatment plans. I am very grateful to our patients for their fantastic comments in support of our Awards application.” At the Awards presentation, the Spring Grove Clinic team were commended for excellence across all of the categories, for the state of the art facility, and being a team who strive to provide excellent patient care. Its’ efforts in raising funds to support Yorkhill Children’s Hospital ECMO Unit won the runner-up award for Best Community Charity Project. Spring Grove Clinic is a leader in providing dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, invisible braces, tooth whitening and family dentistry.

McAveety Slams SNP Games Funding DecisionGlasgow Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety has hit out at a decision by Scottish Enterprise to slash Commonwealth Games legacy funding by almost half. Clyde Gateway, the body responsible for regenerating the East End of Glasgow, has been hit with a 46% cut in funding for urban regeneration in 2011/2012. The agency has been told it will share around £6.8 million with five other agencies, instead of the £7 million it was initially promised. Frank said: “The Enterprise Minister seems to be more interested in facilitating meetings for his friend the Education Minister, who he wants to succeed him as an MSP than he is in the well being of the people of the East End. At this very moment he should be pulling a meeting together with Scottish Enterprise to demand that they withdraw this ridiculous proposal and get around the table with all the partners to fulfil the promises made.”Frank added: “Unlike any other renewal programme in the country commitments were made to ensure that Glasgow could make the best of the opportunities for the Games and regeneration investment. There is no better case for having an impact on Scotland’s economic performance and I am demanding an urgent meeting with the Scottish Government to urge them to ensure Scottish Enterprise withdrawal the proposal to make a massive cut in their previous commitments to the area.”

Cancer (22 June – 23 July)

You are feeling the stress of the last few weeks catch up with you and it is beginning to show on your physical and mental well being. Stop! Take time out for you have a treat, a massage or an hour in the park, away from all your families issues, try to stop accepting an unpleasant situation for the sake of peace as the confrontation will come regardless.

Taurus (21 April – 21May) The big thing on your mind this month is your financial situation and this is causing you to be a little on the cautious side pessimistic even! You are learning new skills which will benefit you in the long term and your finances are improving with you new determination to succeed this month, so take that first step forward, confident and in control!

Gemini (22 May – 21 June)

IThis month has a double edge to it, in one hand your ideas for making money are good and successful and on the other your gullibility in thinking everyone is like you, may cause you problems as you are trusting people who should not be trusted. Try to keep your business and financial information close to your chest.

Leo (24 July – 23 Aug)

You’re on your throne again, judging and handing out opinions on how others should live their life according to the disciple “Leo”! Remember pride comes before a fall and do you really need to worry about how everyone else is behaving? Relax and lighten up. Look on the bright side and you will not feel the need to walk away from that which is only an illusion.

Virgo (24th Aug 23 Sept)

We all know you like nothing more than a good debate! You enjoy being right too, but a word of caution, check out all your information and facts before signing anything of importance as there is no use shouting about it afterwards. There is good news on its way about finances connected to work and travel.

Libra (24 Sept – 23 Oct)

There are a few barriers on your path and if you stay focused and do not give in to bureaucracy you will succeed! Some of you are signing documents of a legal nature and there is much to celebrate in the next few weeks. Keep going forward with your new found vigour.

Scorpio (24 Oct – 22 Nov)

There is confusion with emotional issues, you want everything but nothing is satisfying. You are allowed to be fed up every now and then but just watch that you do not miss an opportunity which may be under your nose, and one more thing, the grass isn’t always greener on the other side!

Sagittarius (23 Nov – 21 Dec)The last few weeks have left you feeling a little dishevelled. The new moon in February gives you a much needed lift and you are focusing on long term plans for the future with your nearest and dearest, some of you will be feeling a little romantic and there could be news of wedding bells for some.

Capricorn (22 Dec – 20 Jan)

Caution is the key word for you this month, do not rush into anything until you have all the facts and take everything that is said to you with a pinch of salt. However when dealing with local authorities it is important that your own actions cannot be seen to be anything other than 100% accurate and truthful.

Aquarius (21 Jan – 19 Feb)

As one of the great thinkers, creational or logical you always have so many good ideas that you don not always pursue them, you have a chance to put your ideas in front of a company or a superior and you will be given the recognition you deserve, try not to allow you little insecurities with yourself hold you back.

Pisces (20 Feb – 20 Mar)

After a challenging time of it you are immerging from your cocoon full of new ideas how to go forward with your long term plans for your future. Your path is being cleared in order to allow you a smooth and safe passage. Your creativity is at an all time high as your surge ahead with eyes open wide and hand ready to catch all that the universe can throw at you.

Scots wha’ hae wie Wallace bled, Scots wham Bruce has aften led. Hehehee Sorry can’t help quoting our national bard on Burns night. Nothing like Burns night to bring out your Scottishness. No wonder it’s a big celebration all over the world. I hope you all had your Haggis neeps and tatties. My wee one came home from nursery regaling us with the joys of Scottish dancing and demanding tatties for dinner. I told him there are lots of Scottish foods. Not just tatties. So this week I have come up with a couple of traditional dishes, that not only taste good but are easy to make.

Herring done in oatmeal

Allow 1-2 herrings per personFine pin head oatmealOil Butter1 lemon

Wash the herring and pat dry. Press the fish both sides into the oatmeal and fry gently in a little oil and butter. Cook for 4 min each side. This is delicious served with fresh peas and buttered new potatoes. Serve with a wedge of lemon or squeeze a little over the fish as it cooks.

Homemade Totty scones

Leftover cold mashed potatoPlain flour

In a bowl add enough flour to the potatoes to make a rough dry dough. Roll out gently on a floured surface and cut into any shape you like. I prefer circles. Fry in a lightly oiled heavy based pan for 2-3 min each side until just browned. Eat immediately with almost anything you fancy. I love smoked salmon and crème fraiche. Or try topped with buttery scrambled eggs. Alternatively allow to cool and eat them at your leisure fried up with some eggs and bacon.

Cock-a-leekie soup (cheats version)

2 large potatoes chopped into small pieces.1 large leek halved lengthways and sliced finelyAny leftover cold roast chicken3 chicken stock cubes.

Add all ingredients into a large pot with 2 pints of water. Bring to the boil and simmer for 10-15 min or until potatoes are cooked. Great served with buttered plain bread.

Cranachan

1 large tub of whipping cream1 cup of porridge oats1 pack of frozen or fresh raspberriesHoney

In a dry pan lightly toast the oats .Keep them moving to avoid burning. Whip the cream with a little sugar. Add the oats and berries and stir gently Serve drizzled with a little honey For adults you can add a dram of Whiskey to the cream.

FOLLOWING the tragic death of a 33 year old man who was discovered lying in Shettleston Road outside the Marquis Bar, Police are appealing for witnesses. The man was found on Saturday night around 8.45pm with a serious head injury and police officers went to the man’s aid. He was then taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary where unfortunately he succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday morning. Detectives from Shettleston CID have been carrying out investigations since Saturday night in an attempt to establish how the man came about his injuries. There is no information at present to suggest he was a victim of assault and his injuries at this time are unexplained. The police are looking at possible scenarios including whether he took unwell or indeed fell and struck his head. Speaking to the Re-Gen Detective Sergeant Eddie Waye said, “ We are extremely saddened to hear

of the man’s death and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time. From the enquiry point of view we still aren’t certain whether he was assaulted or if it was accidental and we are still looking for anyone with any information on what happened, to contact us. I would like to reiterate my appeal from the week-end to the woman who came into the police office to report the

incident. She was wearing a “Russian” style furry hat and she may have information that could help us”. He continued, “There was also a woman who called the CID on Sunday evening, however she did not leave her contact details. I would urge this woman to please get in touch with us again”. Anyone who has any information is asked to contact Shettleston Police Office on 0141 532 4836.

New Head at SwintonPICTURED here is Michelle Kay the new headmistress of Swinton Primary School in Baillieston. Michelle has been acting head-mistress for the past two years and is a very popular choice not only with the pupils but also with the parents. The new appointment comes as the school continues to progress under Michelle’s leadership and although she was brought up in the “Hielans” she certainly considers Swinton as her “Spiritual Home”. Having began her career in Littlehill Primary (which is no longer in existence) Michelle moved to Darnley and was

there for 6 years prior to her moving to Swinton Primary. The Re-Gen has covered many events Michelle along with the excellent Parent-

Teacher group have organised and we are delighted about the appointment and wish not only Michelle but the whole school continued success.

BRIDGETON UMBRELLA NAMED AS ONE OF GLASGOW’S LANDMARKSTHE Bridgeton Umbrella, which has recently undergone a facelift as a result of investment by Clyde Gateway, has been named as one of the Top 50 Glasgow Landmarks by one of the city’s most prestigious heritage groups. The Mackintosh Heritage Group has selected the final 50 from an extensive list of public nominations. The Heritage Group worked alongside a number of partners including the Glasgow Building Preservation Trust, the Glasgow City Heritage Trust, the City Council, Scottish Enterprise and Historic Scotland in determining the list. Neil Baxter of the Mackintosh Heritage Group said “The idea behind this scheme is to recognise 50 of the city’s most

architecturally, historically and socially important buildings and structures. The Bridgeton Umbrella is one of the most loved structures in the city and fully deserves its place on the list of Glasgow’s finest.” Councillor George Redmond, a member of the Clyde Gateway Board as well as elected member for the Bridgeton area said “The Umbrella is one of the the most instantly recognisable structures in Glasgow and the recent investment has restored it to the heart of the historic Bridgeton Cross and made it the focus of the area once again. It is fantastic news that it has now been honoured in this way by the

Mackintosh Heritage Group.” All 50 Glasgow Landmarks will receive a commemorative plaque, and the award for the Bridgeton Umbrella will be engraved in the paving in close proximity to the structure.

SIX police officers who were involved in one of the biggest ever confiscations of counterfeit goods in Glasgow had their achievements recognised at an awards ceremony last Friday. Inspector John Gormlie and Constables James Mitchell, Claire McKenzie, Ryan Curran and Ryan McMurray, along with Sergeant Alan Jamieson, were involved in the seizure of goods from The Barras market which would have sold for more than £2.5 million. Also receiving acknowledgement from

Strathclyde Police for operational excellence were Shettleston officers Constables Mark Stowe and Russell Sands, who received recognition for their skill and initiative in rescuing a suicidal woman from a bridge near Glasgow Green. An award to Shettleston officer Constables Simon Ashley recognised his outstanding performance and personal commitment to Community Policing. Five other Shettleston officers, Sergeant Frank Hamill and Constables Shona Mackinnon, Alexander Wilson,

Stefan Dawson and Elaine Brankin received recognition for their roles in two specific campaigns, the first designed to tackle drunken anti-social behaviour involving under-18s. The second operation has seen officers engage with over 1,000 local school children on subjects including child protection, the dangers of knife crime, racism, sectarianism and territorialism. The awards were presented by Strathclyde Police Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Wayne Mawson.

Local Police AwardsFatal Accident Witnesses SoughtPOLICE are appealing for witnesses following a fatal accident which occurred on the Edinburgh Road near the traffic lights at Baillieston cross. Around 5.00pm on Monday 17th January Baillieston resident Winifred Meechan (69) was fatally injured after being struck by a Fiat Punto car as she crossed the road heading for her brother’s home in Swinton. Winnie as she was fondly known was a well kent face in the community and had time for everyone. She will be

sadly missed. Enquiries into the cause of the accident are ongoing and in appealing for witnesses, Inspector Stevie Meikle of Helen Street Road Policing Unit

said, “ We would like anyone who may have witnessed the accident or has any information which would help us to contact the Road Policing Unit on 0141 532 6442”

Birrell Corrance Funeral DirectorsWith the opening of the new Birrell Corrance Funeral Directors in Main Street Baillieston recently, Robert Birrell (Funeral Services Manager) and Hugh Corrance (Funeral Director), are already serving the needs of a community which over the past month has been dealt a severe blow as far as loved ones passing is concerned. In this area alone we know of at least 14 families who have lost someone dear to them since the turn of the year. Robert and Hugh between them have around thirty years of experience within the funeral business, and dealing with the public following the traumatic experience of a loved one passing, comes second nature. From the first contact to the final resting, Birrell Corrance take the stress and worry from your shoulders and ensure that at such a private time they are there for you. Beautifully set out in their premises at 115 Main Street Baillieston there is a tastefully designed service area and two private viewing rooms where a lot of thought has gone into making them feel serene. Robert and Hugh, thanks to their vast experience, capture the empathy that families expect at such times and they ensure that those little details some people may worry about are taken care of, without intrusion. Being an independent company Birrell Corrance, offer a more personal service and in times like these, that is something that is

appreciated by clients. Personal, Professional and Passionate, are the company bywords and both Robert and Hugh stand by these words as far as the business is concerned. Both are passionate about the service they offer and they go that extra mile to ensure that everything the grieving family requests is catered for. Personal in as much as both are experienced in dealing with families at a time of stress and with their Professional manner, they deal with everything from the first enquiry to the final conclusion. Robert and Hugh understand the feelings of those who require their services and their solemn professional manner shines through at every turn. Letter to the Editor . . .My name is Rose Devlin and I come from Cambuslang. I read in the last Re-Gen that Birrell Corrance were opening a new Funeral Parlour in Baillieston and I would like to tell you of my experiences with the owners. During the past few years, I unfortunately have lost my Mum, Dad and a dear nephew and after contacting Bobby Birrell and Hugh Corrance regarding the funerals I was immediately put at ease by their professionalism and caring attitude. From the first contact, Bobby took all the worry about arranging the funeral from me and at such times this is a blessing. His caring attitude and support really helped me and my family and even a few weeks later Bobby came to my door to find out how we were and how we were coping. This was appreciated and I felt that although he didn’t have to do this, he had thought about my family and our loss. I would highly recommend anyone to get in touch with Birrell Corrance as they really care and support you through trying times.

GIVING independent advice on energy related issues to householders in their homes, is one way in which Fuel Poverty can be mitigated or reduced.

KEEPING YOUR HOME WARMInformation stalls from G-HEAT on how to save money on heating and keep your home warm are being run in local health centres in North- East Glasgow.

Residents of Carmyle are up in arms following the severe cut-back in

services from First Bus Glasgow. As far as the local travelling public are

concerned they have been very badly let down by the bus company following the cessation of the 64 service from 7-00pm on week-days and all day on a Sunday. What this means to the Carmyle folk is that if they don’t have a car then they are stuck in the village unless they get a taxi to get them out. Now many people are on tight budgets due to the present economic climate and to order taxis certainly doesn’t come into the equation for one thing but thanks to First Bus withdrawing the service at night and on a Sunday the residents of Carmyle now have to cut their cloth even more than they expected. A statement received from First Bus said, “From Sunday 16 January 2011, service 64, which operates between Carmyle and the city centre, was withdrawn after approximately 7pm Monday - Saturday and on Sundays.

“We constantly monitor our bus service provision to ensure that supply meets demand and – in the case of service 64 at these times – that demand was simply not sufficient.

“These decisions have not been taken lightly and we have duly consulted with Strathclyde Partnership for Transport to give them the opportunity to evaluate the situation and to fund a service in areas where there is a social need but no commercial viability. In this case, a tender contract has been awarded and customers should contact SPT on 0141 332 6811 for details.” Read what you want into that. A further statement

Carmyle Bus Stops – But Not at Bus Stops

from MSP Margaret Curran was received by the Re-Gen which stated, “The withdrawal of these vital services is very alarming and shows the complete lack of interest that First Bus obviously have for ordinary, hard working people. I will continue to fight to ensure that the residents of Carmyle get the access to services that they deserve. The SNP Government has really let people down on bus services. The withdrawal of the ring fenced subsidy and the opposition of the re-regulation of bus services is very worrying and really begs the question how far is this Government are prepared to let these services slide. We clearly need to be regulating companies, such as First Bus, to ensure that they aren’t abandoning whole communities, just to make profit.” Statements are great guidelines but at the end of the day the good people of Carmyle are still left without public transport after 7-00pm Monday – Saturday and all day Sunday. We’re sure the residents at the Old Wood Road Terminus in Baillieston who have to watch around five buses at a time sitting waiting for 20mins or longer, would gladly lend Carmyle a bus or two. Get it sorted out NOW.

MEMBERS of the Milnbank Housing Association held an Open Day last Saturday at Haghill Primary School in Alexandra Parade. This was just one of the regular community events the Housing Association has held over the past 12 months, whereby members of the Milnbank community get together not only to enjoy themselves (especially the kids), but also to keep up with everything that’s happening within the Association. The event on Saturday was also aimed at getting

across the “Vote Yes” message which relates to the Second Stage Transfer that Milnbank Housing

Association as well as Calvay and Easthall are about to go through. All three Housing Associations are

working towards their tenants transferring over from their existing Glasgow Housing Association to the local area associations which makes great sense as the local associations are well versed in serving their own communities. (If you are undecided at the moment please see the ads in this paper from Milnbank, Calvay and Easthall as these may help you make up your mind).

EASTHALL Park Housing Co-operative has been committed for many years to offering GHA tenants in the Easthall and Kildermorie neighbourhoods the opportunity to vote for Easthall Park to become their landlord.Easthall Park is a community controlled organisation whose history and achievements have been built on local people influencing what happens in their home and neighbourhood. The Co-operative’s mission statement is to deliver for the community – the purpose is to be more than a landlord. For nearly 20 years now, the Co-operative has demonstrated the capability to deliver responsive housing services while having an active role in supporting the

continued development of local people and the wider community. The Co-operative owns 609 houses and is presenting a transfer proposal to 85 GHA tenants in Easthall and Kildermorie tenants. If the GHA tenants vote “YES”, Easthall Park offers the following guarantees:

1. Ensure affordable rents and guarantee a rent freeze in 2011/122. Invest in tenants home and neighbourhood3. Provide local services, with increased tenant involvement and control4. Provide community facilities and support the development of the Kildermorie and Easthall communities5. Improve maintenance services

The staff of Easthall Park will visit all the GHA tenants in Easthall and Kildermorie to explain the transfer proposal and highlight to tenants the importance of voting, as the choice of landlord is a very important issue for tenants. The Co-operative has also issued newsletters, information material and will be holding open events on 31 January 11 and 14 February 11 to raise awareness of the proposal and provide an opportunity for GHA tenants to meet staff and ask any questions they may have.If you would like to discuss any aspect of the transfer, please do not hesitate to contact John McMorrow, Director of Easthall Park Housing Co-operative at the Glenburn Centre, Easthall or by telephone on 0141 781 2277.

Open Day at Milnbank

Second Stage Transfer ballots get go-aheadANOTHER 2000 tenants will soon have a say on plans to transfer their Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) homes to community ownership. The tenants will vote in February and March after GHA approved business plans from five community-based housing associations who want to take ownership of a total of 2262 homes under the Second Stage Transfer (SST) process. And the Scottish Housing Regulator has given approval, in principle, for GHA tenants in the five Local Housing Organisations (LHOs) to be balloted on the plans. An initial consultation period in each area has been taking place during January giving tenants the chance to consider the detailed proposals. Ballot papers will be issued in February and March, with tenants given three weeks to respond. It is expected that if a majority of tenants voting in each area are in favour of the plans, the homes will transfer in early summer 2011. The three LHOs in this area where tenants will be balloted are:

properties in Barlanark near Easterhouse would transfer to Calvay Housing Association

Easthall and Kildermorie in Easterhouse would transfer to Easthall Park Housing Cooperative

properties in Dennistoun and Haghill would transfer to Milnbank Housing Association GHA Board Chair Gordon Sloan said: “We are absolutely committed to delivering Second Stage Transfer where it is what tenants want and I’m delighted more tenants will be given a say early in the New Year on the future of their homes.” Easthall Park Housing Co-operative Chairman Joe Gracey said: “We welcome the commitment of GHA to allow tenants to proceed to complete ownership of their homes through Second Stage Transfer. The Co-operative has been working in both the Easthall and Kildermorie area delivering high-quality homes, services and facilities and looks forward to GHA

tenants getting the opportunity to transfer.”Calvay Housing Association Chairman Peter Howden said: “We are pleased that GHA’s Board has approved our proposals for SST. We look forward to discussing these with the tenants in greater detail over the next few weeks prior to the ballot when tenants will have the opportunity to vote for community ownership”. Alan Benson, Director of Milnbank HA, said: “We are delighted that GHA’s Board has agreed our proposals can be put to tenants in our area and give them the opportunity to vote for community ownership”. The three communities in the area which will go to ballot in February/March are part of an agreed programme for SST which could see up to 16,500 homes transfer in total – where it is what tenants want. So far 4000 homes have transferred since March, 2009. Another 8000 are due to transfer in the New Year.

Stock Transfer

Our promises to youCalvay promises to deliver the following should the majority of tenants vote YES to the transfer.

• Ensure affordable rents and guarantee rent rises of no more than RPI +1% until 2016.

• Invest in tenants’ homes and the neighbourhood.

• Provide local services with increased tenant involvement and control.

• Provide community facilities and support the development of the Barlanark community.

• Improve maintenance services.

MILNBANK HOUSING ASSOCIATION – VOTE YESAS the Second Stage Transfer decision approaches for many residents in the Dennistoun Area, Minbank Housing Association are gearing up for the “Big Vote.”

Since the Housing Association was registered in August 1975 and opened a local office in 1978 those involved in Milnbank have and continue to believe that housing is a lot more than bricks and mortar. Milnbank is about the Community and over the years this has been proved as the housing association constantly works hand in glove with the local community. The vast improvements made in the Haghill area are a credit to the association and these were brought about by consultation

with the local residents. The transformation at the

old Great Eastern “Hotel” into a fantastic development which is now a place to be proud of is down to Milnbank Housing Association members. The local Gala days which take place every year and where the numbers attending and enjoying

themselves increases year by year are down to Milnbank Housing Association and the reason for these and many more improvements is that Milnbank care about the local people and this “Feel-good” factor will hopefully

be maintained by voting YES when the second stage transfer process begins next month. There are many reasons that local residents should VOTE YES for transferring to Milnbank

Housing Association such as reporting repairs and having them dealt with promptly, the fact that emergency repairs will receive attention within 3 hours of the

association receiving the request and of course the Landscaping Maintenance programme which means that the front gardens in the area are always kept in good condition meaning the surroundings continue to look neat and tidy. CCTV has been installed as a deterrent against crime and to ease the residents fear of crime. The fact that there is a provision for a community hall for local residents.

These examples of concern for the tenants shows that Milnbank Housing Association cares and with a Yes Vote when the time comes will ensure that the tenants care about Milnbank.

If the majority of tenants support the Milnbank proposal for second stage transfer this would mean you would become a tenant of Milnbank Housing Association with full access to their wide range of continuously improving local housing services. It is important to stress that this transfer can only happen if you VOTE YES in the ballot.

We want you to join us and gain the benefits that our tenants enjoy as a result of local services, local decisions and local control. So, JOIN US and help create a new Milnbank, - a great place to live learn, work, visit and invest in.

JOHN Wheatley College is pleased to announce that it has appointed a new Principal to succeed from Ian Graham who retires at the end of this session. The College’s current Assistant Principal, Alan Sherry, will take over the Principal’s role in August. The thorough selection process included consultation with community representatives and each candidate made a presentation to an invited audience as part of their application. That audience included community workers and volunteers, Board and staff representatives from the College, a local Head Teacher and senior staff from local housing associations. Andy Woolley, Chair of the College’s Board of Management, said,“As the College is so intrinsically woven into the community, we were keen to consult with staff and community representatives to

ensure that we were looking for the skills and qualities best suited to the role. It was a complex task to select a new Principal from such a strong field of candidates and we are indebted to those individuals whose valuable contribution helped us to select the best candidate. “We are confident that, in appointing Alan Sherry, we have chosen the most appropriate person to take the College forward and continue the sterling job which Ian Graham has worked so hard to achieve over the years. We congratulate Alan and look forward to working with him in the years to come.” Principal Ian Graham added,“I am very pleased that the Board has made this appointment and that our community partners had the opportunity to contribute to the process. It is crucial that the College’s management team are aware of the challenges which confront learners and the wider community and Alan has certainly demonstrated his unswerving commitment to the College’s ethos over the years. “His is a strong and capable hand and I am confident that he will consistently keep the interests of College learners at the centre of all he does.” With a background in community learning & development and further education, Alan came to John Wheatley College as a lecturer at its inception in August 1989, joining the Senior Management Team in 1991 as an Assistant Principal in charge of the curriculum, quality and student services. He left for a few years, holding a senior post at Motherwell College, followed by a period working as an educational

consultant, before returning to John Wheatley College in 2004 as Assistant Principal in charge of quality and college services. Alan Sherry said,“I feel privileged to be appointed to the post of Principal at the college where I have spent the better part of the last twenty-one years. “John Wheatley College is unique in the sector due to the obvious community profile it maintains. Our present Principal, Ian Graham, will be a very hard act to follow, especially in such challenging times. However, I am sure that, with the support of a strong and effective Senior Management Team and committed staff, the College will continue to develop and innovate within, and on behalf of, the communities it serves.

“Our learners and our ethos remain at the heart of all we do and I look forward to leading the College into an exciting future.”

COCAINE powder, freebase and crack are all forms of cocaine. They are stimulants with powerful, but short-lived, effects. Stimulants temporarily speed up the processes of your mind and body. ‘Freebase’ cocaine and ‘crack’ cocaine, can be smoked, and so can reach the brain very rapidly in high dosage. Snorted powder cocaine is absorbed more slowly. Hence, smoked freebase or crack tends to be much stronger and more addictive than snorted powder cocaine. However, all forms of cocaine prepared for injection (whether powder cocaine or crack) can also reach the brain rapidly in high doses and so can be very addictive too.Slang: Street names for drugs can vary around the country. At the start of this year many people in Scotland waited with bated breath to see if the minute’s silence to those who perished in the Ibrox Disaster would be respectfully observed by those attending the Old-Firm match. Thankfully it was and scarves and flags from both sets of supporters were seen amongst the tributes laid out at Ibrox. When the tragic death of Tommy

Burns was announced many Rangers supporters making their way home from Manchester stopped off at Celtic Park to pay their respects to a footballing legend. There are many more examples of the Old-Firm supporters uniting in times of sadness, yet when it comes to everyday life, there are still those who spout Bigotry at every turn. Everyone has their own thoughts and beliefs but that is exactly what

they are, “Their Own Thoughts”. There is absolutely no reason in the world to ram your beliefs down others throats just because they may (or may not) attend a different place of religion from you. The more we try to think of others the more tolerant we become and after all as the old saying goes, “We’re all Jock Tamson’s Bairns”. Think on, before you embarrass yourself and others.

INDECENCY – DALMARNOCKLondon Road Police Office are appealing for witnesses following an incident in the east end of Glasgow last Friday morning,(21 January). Around 08.30am, a male member of the public was driving along Swanston Street, Dalmarnock, when he saw a man closely following a woman on the footpath near to Morrisons Gym. The man on the footpath was touching himself inappropriately and the woman - when she noticed what he was doing - became extremely distressed. A passer-by stopped to help the woman, at which time the suspect made off. The suspect is described as white, approximately 45 -50 years old, around 5ft 10 in height, of stocky build, with short dark hair (greying at the side). At the time of the incident, he was wearing a black donkey style jacket, a light green/blue shirt, light coloured jeans and dark shoes.

Officers are also keen to trace the woman so that she can assist them with their enquiries. Speaking from London Road police office,

Detective Sergeant Jackie Ferrie said: “This was an appalling incident which happened in broad daylight. As well as tracing the suspect, it is vital that we find the woman who was targeted by this man. “We believe that she may have gone into a nearby business premise and I would appeal directly to her to get in touch with us. She is described as aged 25 - 28 years old, around 5ft 8 tall, of slim build, and was wearing a tan suede jacket.”She added: “I would also appeal to anyone who may have been in the area at the time and witnessed this incident, or indeed recognises the suspect, to contact police as a matter of urgency.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Jackie Ferrie at London Road Police Office on 0141 532 4636. Alternatively, contact CRIMESTOPPERS on 0800 555 111 where anonymity will be maintained.

22 YEAR-OLD MAN ROBBED – MAIN STREET, BAILLIESTONStrathclyde Police is appealing for witnesses after a 22 year-old man was robbed in Main Street, Baillieston last Saturday evening (22 January). Around 6.35pm hours, the 22 year-old man was walking along Main Street when he stopped to use the cash machine outside the Clydesdale Bank. As he carried out his transaction a man approached from his left and threatened him with what appeared to be a knife. The suspect then removed a three figure sum of cash and was last seen running North on Buchanan Street and out of sight into Buchanan lane. The suspect is described as white man, 5’10 in height, slim build. He was wearing black coloured clothing and a black hat and scarf covering his face. Officers from Shettleston CID are continuing enquiries

and checking CCTV footage in a bid to identify the man responsible. Speaking from Shettleston Police Office , Detective Constable Kevin Price told our reporter: “Fortunately, the 22 year-old man was not injured however, he was left extremely shaken as a result of the incident and it is vital that we trace the man responsible. “The area would’ve been particularly busy at the time of the incident. I would ask anyone who may have seen the suspect hanging around the area prior to the incident to contact police as a matter of urgency. “Our initial enquiries reveal that a man got out of his car to assist the victim. I would ask this man to come forward as any information no matter how seemingly insignificant may help us with our enquiries.” Anyone with information is asked to contact officers at Shettleston CID on 0141 532 4800.

Horrific Attack on Innocent ManStrathclyde Police is appealing for information after a man was seriously assaulted in Glasgow early last Saturday morning (22 January 2011). Around 0105 am on Saturday morning, a 31-year old man was walking east on Duke Street following a night out in Glasgow City Centre when two men approached him and demanded money. The victim refused and attempted to walk away, however one of the men struck him in the face with a glass bottle. The injured man managed to run off, but was followed by both men who again assaulted him with the bottle. Both then ran off in the direction of High Street. Police and ambulance services were called and the victim was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary to be treated for facial injuries. Medical staff have advised he has now undergone surgery, and is in a stable condition. Detectives from London Road CID made enquiries at the scene of the crime throughout the night, door to door enquiries were carried out, and CCTV will be checked as the week progresses. Officers believe this area of Duke Street would still have been relatively busy at 1am with people making their way home from nearby pubs, and they are hopeful someone may have seem something

that could assist the investigation. Speaking from London Road Police Office, Detective Sergeant Jackie Ferrie told the Re-Gen:“This was an appalling attack on the victim, who is in a terrible state in hospital. The suspects, not content with just trying to steal his money, have inflicted terrible injuries on him, and he will most definitely be left with permanent scarring. “Duke Street is always fairly busy at pub closing time, and is also a main thoroughfare for taxi drivers working in and around the area. I would therefore appeal to anyone who was in Duke Street, near to Tennent Caledonian Breweries around 1am Friday night/Saturday morning and saw a disturbance take place or indeed recognises the descriptions of the suspects to please let us know.”The Descriptions of the suspects are as follow: 1. White male, 18/20 years, 5ft 5 tall, slim build wearing a grey/blue hooded top with logo on chest 2. White male, 18/20yrs – no further descriptionInformation can be passed to DS Jackie Ferrie London Road CID on telephone number 0141 532 4636 or CRIMESTOPPERS can be called in confidence on 0800 555 111.

INDECENT EXPOSURE - BAILLIESTON, GLASGOWPolice are appealing for witnesses after a man indecently exposed himself to a woman in Baillieston, Glasgow on Thursday 13 January 2011.Around 3.05pm on Thursday afternoon, a 45 year old woman was walking her dog in the lane between Huntingtower Road, Tantallon Road and Kelburne Gardens, Baillieston, when a young man exposed himself to her and shouted at her when she looked in the other direction and ignored him.The man who made off via car lock ups towards Beaully Road, is described as white, about 15 years of age, 5 ft 9 in height, of slim build and short brown hair. He was wearing dark trousers, a white untucked shirt, a black jacket and he was carrying a shoulder rucksack type bag.

Constable Claire Robertson, Communities Unit, Baillieston Police Office, told the Re-Gen:“This incident took place in broad daylight in the middle of the afternoon, and whilst it was distressing enough for this woman to have experienced, there could have been young children in the area at the time too.“We are keen to hear from anyone who may have been in the area and who recognises the description of the man responsible. It is possible that he has done this before and I would urge anyone who may have seen or been subject to this indecency, to contact Baillieston Police Office on telephone number 0141 532 4350.”

GFI Means Fantastic Deals for AllCOUNCILLOR James Coleman officially opened the Glasgow Furniture Initiative’s (GFI) new 5,000 square foot furniture reuse superstore in Blairtummock Road, Easter Queenslie, this week. The opening gives local people of both the East End and the North of Glasgow, the opportunity to browse and buy a massive range of quality furniture at bargain prices, and promises to deliver benefits to the wider community. Councillor Coleman said: “I am delighted to have the opportunity to open this fantastic facility, which is a welcome addition to Glasgow Furniture Initiative’s other retail outlets in Ruchill and Wellhouse.” “The GFI has been a great success in helping those who are less fortunate to make a better home for themselves as well as bringing significant benefit to our local communities and

environment.” GFI has been collecting donated furniture and white goods, and selling them at reduced cost since 2007. In the last year alone, it has helped 5,000 Glasgow families furnish their homes affordably. Robert Stewart, Chief Executive of GFI, said: “Our new superstore represents a giant leap forward for GFI. It’s our biggest centre yet and will allow us to showcase so much more to the public in one space on one level. These are difficult financial times for so many local folk. We aim to help provide a stable social environment for families by helping folk get the furniture they need.” GFI also provides jobs – with the new shop taking GFI’s staffing levels up to 14 full-time – and training opportunities to a wide range of people, including those with mental health

issues and who have been long-term unemployed. Eleanor Brown, Chair of GFI, said: “GFI’s rationale is that people are the most important resource in any community large or small. We give people the opportunity to undertake constructive and challenging tasks, which benefit their own communities while simultaneously giving them the time-discipline, self-confidence and social awareness, which such tasks promote.” GFI is a member of the Community Resources Network Scotland (CRNS), which

represents more than 130 reuse, recycling and waste prevention organisations across Scotland. Pauline Hinchion, chief executive of CRNS, said: “It’s great to see GFI expand further. Not only is it helping Glasgow people directly, it’s helping all of us by preventing thousands of tonnes of reusable furniture and other household goods from ending up in landfill every year and improving the environment in which we all live.” Glasgow Furniture Initiative (GFI) is a social enterprise with charitable status that collects donated furniture, white goods and electrical items in working condition and sells them at reduced cost to disadvantaged people in the community. Its shops are open to everyone and offer a wide range of household furniture such as suites, beds and fridges – all at low cost. All donations are collected without charge. Commercial donations are also gratefully accepted. As well as providing essential household items at low prices to people in need, GFI provides training and work opportunities to people in the local community. The Community Resources Network Scotland (CRNS) represents over 130 recycling and reuse organisations across Scotland on issues of sustainable community resource management. Most members of the CRNS are social enterprises managing waste resources at a local level through recycling, reuse, composting, waste reduction and waste education activities. They prevent tonnes of valuable product and materials from ending up in landfill, create local jobs and other economic opportunities, and typically work to help those on low incomes or who are disadvantaged.Cllrs Jim Coleman and Ruth Simpson join Eleanor Brown (Chairperson - GFI) to cut the

ribbon to officially open the new premises.

Pictured here is an old Photo which came into our possession recently. It features the very successful Gartcosh United Amateur Football club around 30 years ago. Many players featured in the pic hailed from

the Baillieston/Garrowhill/ Bargeddie areas and we thought it would be good to publish the photo which we are sure will revive some memories of their days with the club. See if you recognise

anyone, some we know of are Joe Innes, Gerry Glasgow, Eric Foy, Davie Thomson, Tam Kelly, Jim Ford, Davie Park and Gordon Ritchie plus the coaches at the back, left to right, Bob Jeffries. Davie Skinner, George

THE Glasgow 2014 Legacy Framework aimed at maximising the benefit the city’s people, business and organisations receive from the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games is already delivering huge dividends for the city, a new report reveals. Glasgow companies have won 42% (£67million) of the £158million of contracts awarded through the Commonwealth Business Portal; approximately 900 apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship school leaver places in 2009 with a further 700 school leavers from June 2010 being matched to suitable placements; and the creation of a Commonwealth Games Jobs Fund which will support the creation of 1,000 jobs in small and medium-sized enterprises by July 2012 A report on Glasgow City Council’s (GCC) progress toward achieving its stated aims for the legacy from the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games was presented and recommended to GCC’s Executive Committee last Thursday (20th January). The report updates what has been achieved in legacy terms since the council’s Legacy Framework for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games was launched just over a year ago, and an overview of the key actions that will be taken between now and March 2012 to achieve GCC’s legacy vision and objectives. There are six legacy themes in the Glasgow 2014 Legacy Framework - a more prosperous Glasgow, a more active Glasgow, a Glasgow with an enhanced international image and outlook, a greener Glasgow, a more accessible Glasgow and a more inclusive Glasgow. Other information in the report includes that Glasgow is now ranked 11th in world league of ultimate sports cities (Ultimate Sports Cities Awards) and the launch of two pilot projects - the Club, Coach and Volunteer Improvement Programme and ‘Personal Best’ - aimed at improving volunteering skills and employability The legacy plan includes nearly 50 projects which the council and its key

partners will deliver between now and 2019. These include the building of new sports facilities and transport infrastructure, work with schools and clubs to increase sports participation, and initiatives to create jobs and attract more investment and tourism to the city. Speaking at a Photo-Call at the new Velodrome in Dalmarnock, Councillor Archie Graham, Executive Member for the Commonwealth Games at Glasgow City Council, said: “The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games is a priceless opportunity that the city cannot afford not to make the most of. I am delighted to say that individuals and organisations are already benefiting from Glasgow hosting the Games. The city council’s legacy plan aims to involve as many people, businesses and organisations as we can to ensure the greatest benefit possible can be achieved. “This legacy can take many forms, whether improving the fitness of individuals, preparing people for the world of work or simply raising self-esteem. For firms and other bodies, the Games offer the chance to develop trade, skills and business networks that will benefit Glasgow as a whole, as will the massive infrastructure and environmental improvements being made ahead of Glasgow 2014. I am confident that the legacy work the council has been doing, often in collaboration with partners in both the public and private sectors, will leave a lasting legacy in the city, years after Games.” Glasgow 2014 Chief Executive John Scott said: “It is great to see that the hard work that the Council has put into planning a lasting legacy from the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games is already paying dividends. One of the lessons learned from previous Games is that a lot of planning is required to achieve lasting social, economic and sporting benefits from the hosting of major Games. Glasgow City Council made an early investment in this process back at the time of the bid, and that foresight is clearly now paying off.” The Re-Gen can cite some positive

examples of a more prosperous Glasgow with more than 4,500 Glasgow-based businesses registered on the Commonwealth Business Portal (36% of the total). Approximately 260 New Entrant Trainees had been secured for the long-term unemployed and those leaving education, 900 Glasgow companies have registered with Business Club Scotland plus construction started last year in conjunction with Clyde Gateway East, on a £35million development on a 14 hectare site on London Road. During the Photo call the Re-Gen spoke to some of the young people who have already benefitted from Glasgow winning the Games, including young Sotonye David-West (16), who was one of the city’s 12 Interaction Ambassadors who travelled to the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games. Sotonye told our reporter: “I moved to the UK from Nigeria when I was two years old so have grown up in Scotland and have become accustomed to the traditions and unique way of life in Glasgow. The Interaction Ambassador programme has already by far exceeded my expectations. I am completely delighted to take part in this opportunity and to share what I can with others. I look forward to learning from other people and being able to help leave a lasting legacy on Glasgow’s name. “Sensational would be how I would describe our trip to India. The hospitality of the Indian children and citizens was beyond anything I have ever come across. Meeting the British High Commissioner, our athletes and the First Minister are things you dream of. The atmosphere at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium was electric. I’ve never felt more patriotic in my life as I cheered for Scotland, alongside my fellow ambassadors, when we received the Commonwealth Flag. Our Ambassador group is made up of fellow Glaswegians from diverse ethnic backgrounds and religions, but we supported Scotland as one. I look forward to my role now in sharing these experiences with my fellow pupils and other young people,

and getting them excited about and involved in Glasgow 2014.” Dennistoun man Andrew Tidser (24) is an apprentice plant operative on the M74 Completion project, one of the £1.5billion-worth of schemes that will enhance Glasgow’s transport infrastructure, ensuring the city is better connected both nationally and internationally, ensuring easier access to, from and across Glasgow. Andrew said:“I started working as an apprentice on the M74 back in 2008, so really I’ve been here since the beginning. I’ve watched the road grow and have seen bridges built over motorways, railway lines and even the river. I have worked on different aspects of the project, such as laying drains and constructing manholes, and now I am on my way to becoming a qualified plant operative. I am hoping to secure a long-term career in this industry and have been really overwhelmed by how encouraging people have been in supporting me in my apprenticeship. I enjoy working with my colleagues and just getting on with the job. This has been a great project to work on and I will get great satisfaction when the road is finally completed and opens next year.” To show that the Games is not just benefitting just the East end but the Whole of Glasgow there are examples of other youths who are delighted to see progress take for example Nathan Courtney. Nathan (18) is a coach at Drumchapel Table Tennis Club. He said:“I’ve been coaching table tennis at Drummore Primary School for more than two years now. At the start of the six weeks, the children are not very sure and

are nervous about going to the tables, but by the end you can’t get them off! I just love the fun and seeing that in their faces. When you show them how to play a forehand, they might not get it straight away but next week you see more and more improvement. I go to college part-time and I do this coaching part-time, and I just love it. I started table tennis when I was about 13. I was hanging around the streets and getting into trouble, as young boys do. There was a table tennis taster session at the High School in Drumchapel, and I had a go. I just took to it and started going to the club every day. Now, I’ve got a job through it, I’m coaching and making some money. I go everywhere with the club. I’ve been to Belgium and it keeps me off the streets and I’m just happy. It’s changed my life, basically.” So there you have it, many people are benefitting already from Glasgow winning the 2014 Commonwealth Games and we are positive that many, many, more will continue that trend. As always no matter what the City tries to do to improve the

prospects of the residents there will still be detractors, in fact I recently read a piece by former Celtic player Davie Provan sarcastically reporting that the East End of Glasgow could certainly be doing with a Velodrome. Davie grow up, when you realise that the people in the East End (many of whom made you into a “Personality”), feel strongly about their area and any investment which comes to the Parkhead/Dalmarnock and Bridgeton districts is welcome. Especially if it means Employment, New Developments and Investment with a Health spin-off. Yes we in the East End will continue to back the City and its achievement of winning the 2014 Commonwealth Games, even if it means some, “ High Profile Reporters” who may be based in the Greenock area missing out on yet another junket to basically add a few comments which at the end of the day really don’t matter that much – Do They? The Re-Gen will continue to bring the Good News about the progress of the Legacy which will result from this fantastic Sporting Event.

Budding computer games designers are being given a unique opportunity to design a digital game for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Any student studying in Scotland is eligible for the competition which will see both the winner and runner up take home a cash prize of £2014. In addition to this the winner will work with Dundee games devel-opment firm 4J Studios to transform their concept into a working game. The game will then appear free-to-play on the official Glasgow 2014 website. To enter the competition students must come up with a digital game concept which aligns with the ideals of the Commonwealth Games Federation - humanity, destiny and equality - and the Glasgow 2014 brand - living life to the full, endeavour, responsibility, stylish, genuine and fun.

Minister for Public Health and Sport Shona Robison said: “The games development sector is a Scottish success story and a vital part of our creative industries. As a result I have no doubt that the creativity and imagination of our students will result in a game that is fitting to mark the Commonwealth Games coming to Scotland in 2014. “This groundbreaking initiative is an opportunity for Scotland to stamp its own innovative character on the Games and reflect the success that already exists in our world renowned games sector.“The 2014 Games will be an amazing experience for both Glasgow and Scotland. We are working hard to maximise the long term benefits and this contest will help contribute to that goal by encouraging crea-tive talent and forging links between education and industry.”Glasgow 2014 Chief Executive John Scott said: “Scotland has a exceptional computer games industry and we want it to play an important part of Glasgow 2014, starting with this competition to get students involved in creating a game to go on our website. “I can’t wait to see the designs that are submitted and to see the winning concept go from being on paper to a reality. Glasgow 2014 is all about getting people involved from across Scotland and inspiring people to strive to do their best. I hop that this competition achieves that.”Studio Director at 4J Frank Arnot said:

“I am delighted that 4J Studios has been awarded the contract to develop the winning entry in the Scottish Government’s Digital Game Contest and I am greatly looking forward to working together with the winning student to transform their concept into a finished product.”The judging panel will include renowned Scots game designer and entrepreneur Dave Jones who was involved in the creation of both Lemmings and Grand Theft Auto. At the launch he said: “I am very much looking forward to judging the Scottish Government’s digital games contest which undoubtedly will see ideas to match the exciting occasion of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.”
