Take steps to end global poverty.

Faites quelques pas pour mettre fin à la pauvreté dans le monde.

On behalf of Aga Khan Foundation Canada, I want to thank you for your extraordinary contribution toward ending global poverty.

This year’s World Partnership Walk was our best ever, thanks to your loyalty and willingness to take an active role in our mission: to develop sustainable improvements in the quality of life of poor and marginalized communities in Asia and Africa.

We have had the good fortune to meet many of you at Walks across Canada. As ambassadors, volunteers, sponsors and donors, you pound the pavement and invite friends, neighbours and colleagues to walk with you in their own meaningful way. Your efforts—raising almost $7 million and encouraging thousands of Canadians to join us on Walk Day—enable us to continue our work in the field, expand our programs and pursue new ventures.

This year’s report highlights ways in which our established programs in Pakistan, Mozambique and Egypt are evolving in step with the needs of local communities. In Mozambique, for example, we began by helping families ensure year-round access to food. Now, we are building on our experience and earlier gains by improving access to basic financial services and market development expertise. These programs will help farmers sell their surpluses and generate new income.

The success of this year’s Walk reinforces our belief that Canadians will continue to work with us to fight global poverty. As we expand our programs and respond to new challenges, your efforts will enable us to make an even greater impact.

Once again, thank you for your valued support.

Yours sincerely,

Amin Lalji Ameerally Kassim-LakhaChairman, AKFC National Committee Vice-Chairman, AKFC National Committee

Highlights from the 2011 World Partnership Walk Thousands of Canadians converged on parks and city centres this spring to take part in the 27th World Partnership Walk.

This year’s Walk raised $6.8 million to support Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC). An annual event, the Walk has raised nearly $70 million since 1985.

Ambassadors are the Walk’s lifeblood. They provide support in numerous ways, such as hosting information sessions in their workplaces, raising funds through their networks and inviting newcomers to join them on Walk day. In 2011, more than 6,000 people registered as individuals or team members, raising more than $3.75 million. Generous corporate donations and sponsorships raised $3.05 million.

Many ambassadors are motivated by personal experience with the cause they’re walking for. Sultan Mitha, a Walk supporter for over 20 years, visited AKFC programs in East Africa last year as the winner of the 2010 Walk’s “Mega Bonus Draw.”

“As we travelled through Tanzania and Mozambique,” said Ms. Mitha, “I saw how the Aga Khan Foundation is working with local communities: helping children go to school, giving families access to clean water and opportunities to earn an income. It was a remarkable experience, and it gave me great pride to see the difference we are making.”

Along with food, entertainment and “Walking the Walk” came numerous opportunities to connect with the cause. Activities in the Global Village tent and around the site offered a glimpse into programs supported by the Walk. Participants earned a chance to win a trip to visit AKFC’s programs in the field by completing a Global Village passport.

The exceptional moral and financial support lent to this year’s Walk demonstrates Canadians’ commitment to causes beyond their borders - read on in this report to learn more about the impact of that support.

Your Dollars At WorkFunds raised in this year’s World Partnership Walk are addressing the complex challenges of global poverty. By committing to the long term and responding with a range of strategies and approaches, the Foundation’s programs aren’t just changing lives, they’re changing the fortunes and future of entire communities.

In CAIrO

The Cairo Economic Livelihoods Program draws on modern business principles to revitalize the traditional crafts industry in poor districts of Egypt’s capital. With Canadian help, the program is promoting economic growth through vocational training and financial and business services.

In MOzAMBIque

A Canadian-supported program in northern Mozambique is improving the overall quality of life of women and men through improved food security and livelihood opportunities. Close to 35,000 households in seven districts in the Cabo Delgado province will benefit from the program, which is helping families to grow more food and earn a better income.

YOuTh leAdershIP Key to Prosperity

The Globe and Mail, AKFC’s long-time national media partner, profiled some of AKFC’s work in Pakistan during this year’s Walk campaign. The following story appeared in the April 30th edition of the newspaper.

Growing up in the rugged mountains of Chitral district in northern Pakistan, 25-year-old Tabasum Khan witnessed her parents’ struggle to support their eight children. Subsistence farming and seasonal income from her father’s manual labour was rarely enough to feed and clothe everyone, let alone pay school fees. In spite of her thirst for education, Ms. Khan was forced to leave school soon after she started.

Years later, when she saw a chance to learn some new skills, Ms. Khan seized it and turned it into an opportunity for her entire family. In 2007, she persuaded her reluctant parents to let her study embroidery and product development in a course offered by the Aga Khan Rural Support Program (AKRSP), which has a long track record of working with the population of this remote region near the border with Afghanistan. Ms. Khan excelled not only at producing fine needlework, but also designing new crafts. Soon she was training and mentoring others, while organizing an embroidery co-operative and holding down a job as a resource person for a handicraft trading company.

Ms. Khan became the primary income earner in the family, and vividly recalls the day she brought home the first cash from the sale of her work. “My father and mother became excited and praised me, and being a girl it was an emotional moment as it is a rare case,” Ms. Khan said through an interpreter.

“The training was a turning point in my life, that not only helped me develop a quality product, but also showed me a way to make myself an independent person.”

AKRSP was founded in 1982 in the remote valleys of the Hindu Kush and Karakoram mountains, home to many of the world’s tallest and most treacherous peaks. Canada was the first bilateral donor in 1983, and individual Canadians continue to play a vital role in supporting the development of stronger communities through donations to Aga Khan Foundation Canada.

With 70 per cent of the population younger than 25 years old, and an economy based primarily on subsistence farming, finding ways to keep well-educated youth employed and engaged in the community is a major challenge. AKRSP is working on several fronts to expand the possibilities, whether through building skills such as handicraft embroidery, developing new markets for existing crops, or by refining products produced in the region—such as gem stones or organic dried fruit.

Building strong local organizations is key to the process. The Aga Khan Foundation has helped establish voluntary organizations and women’s groups that can lead the development process and drive the initiatives. Helping youth such as Ms. Khan prepare for the labour market, creating new markets for their work and promoting their leadership skills are ways to strengthen communities and enable youth to contribute to the development process.

Since studying embroidery and product development, Tabasum Khan has started a co-op and created new employment opportunities for other women.

Meet an Ambassador: sAhezAd PArdhAndIreCTOr, CAPITAl MAnAGeMenT OxFOrd PrOPerTIes GrOuP

“AKFC’s focus on the root causes of poverty and helping communities to develop sustain-able solutions is what makes me so passion-ate about the Walk and the organization,” says Sahezad Pardhan, a Director at Oxford Proper-ties Group, a global real estate investment firm.

Sahezad brought more than knowledge and skills to Oxford when he joined the company in 2010. He brought enthusiasm and passion for the World Partnership Walk, something he had demonstrated as national Walk teams coordinator at KPMG. Over a five-year period, Sahezad helped grow KPMG’s participation from two teams to ten across Canada. In 2010 alone, KPMG’s teams raised over $150,000.

Oxford employees and executives were keen to take up the Walk challenge. They held two “lunch and learn” sessions and gave Walk volunteers access to company offices and properties to advertise and promote the Walk.

The company’s first-year results were impres-sive: Fifty team members signed on and raised over $21,000.

“Raising awareness about the Walk and AKFC is the key to building a strong corporate team and getting the support of the organization right from the executive level through to the grassroots,” says Sahezad. “AKFC’s long-term commitment to the communities it works with and the collaborative approach to its programming give me hope that Canadians can truly make a difference in helping alleviate poverty in Africa and Asia.”
