Principal’s Report
Hello and welcome to the new school year!
There has been some challenging times recently,
particularly in rural areas, with bushfires and drought
conditions affecting so many, both here in South
Australia and interstate. However there has also been a tremendous
show of support for others and a strong sense of community spirit –
something that our region is well known for and should be proud of.
We had a very successful start last week, with students, staff and
families quickly settling into the numerous routines that accompany
busy school life.
At times, going back to school can be a challenge for students (and
staff), particularly managing the change of routines between home
and school life and for students, some things are out of their control
as they conform to school expectations. However, there are several
things that each of us can control everyday; our attitudes, our
words, our actions, our manners and our efforts!
‘Accomplishment comes from making positive efforts, even in the
face of negative circumstances.’ Ralph Marston
I look forward to the year ahead and accomplishing a good deal
together.

2020 School Improvement – focus on the learning
2020 promises to be another year full of opportunities and learning experiences for our students.
Staff have been very busy preparing for the year ahead and are committed to further building
upon last year’s successes.
The school is well positioned to extend our focus on three, main priorities;
High Standard of Reading
High Standard of Numeracy
High Standard of Writing
Student Voice
Upper Primary students are currently in the process of applying for the numerous leadership positions
throughout the school. It is terrific to see so many aspiring to improve themselves and take on
greater challenges/responsibility. All student leadership positions will be finalised prior to our
assembly in Week 3 where they will be announced to the school community.
Also this week, students in the Upper Primary class will have the opportunity to start the ‘Powerful
Learner Passport’ process. This involves providing evidence over three weeks, of demonstrating the
learning dispositions: problem solver, self-regulator and resilient learner to achieve the privileges and
independence that comes with holding a ‘passport’. I encourage all students to challenge
themselves to be a consistent, Powerful Learner.
Volunteering/Student Support
At Ramco Primary School we have a great opportunity to develop strong relationships within our
school community to better meet the individual needs of our learners. In recent years we have been
fortunate to have many parents and volunteers working within our school. If this is of interest to you,
I encourage you to become involved in school activities wherever possible, as you will have a
positive impact on the learning of your child. Please speak to your student’s teacher or enquire at
the office if you would like to take on a more active role.
Term 1
A Term 1 Calendar has been attached to this week’s newsletter with planned events and activities
such as assemblies, sports days etc. A copy is also in the front office and will be updated throughout
the term. This is a great resource to share and discuss with your child to help develop responsibility
and organisation skills.
2020 Student Consent
A variety of forms were distributed to families last week. Please complete and
return the swimming consent form ASAP and return the pink details form with any
required amendments. Any questions please contact Kylie at the front office.
School Bus to WOOSHC
Beginning this week, the school bus will be operating an everyday service to the Waikerie Primary
School Out Of School Hours Care in Waikerie. Forms to access this service are available from the
front office and are only for students who are registered to attend WOOSHC. Students leave from
Ramco PS after school and are signed in at WOOSHC by the bus driver (Ramco staff member).
Parents and Friends
The Parents and Friends (P&F) AGM will be held next Thursday 13 February in the Activity Room from
9.00 am. Please come along and see how you can play an active role in supporting your child and
school this year. If you have any questions please make contact with the school or Louise Thiel. Also,
please keep your eye open for the P&F newsletter that is sent home regularly throughout the year.
SunSmart
As a SunSmart school and following our school policy, we require students to be
wearing a hat every day in terms 1, 3 and 4. It is each student’s responsibility to be
organised to have a hat at school during these terms so that they can participate
in all activities.
Swimming
Next week, our Reception to Year Five students are
participating in swimming lessons at the school pool. A
swimming instructor is leading these sessions and
explicitly teaching important skills. Please check that
your child/ren has packed bathers (including a rashie or
similar to cover the shoulders) and a towel each day so
that they do not miss out on this part of the curriculum.
Year 6/7 students will be participating in Aquatics in term
4.
Acquaintance Night and Governing Council AGM
Make sure you put in your diary and come along to our school’s Acquaintance night next Tuesday
11th February. All families are invited. The barbecue will start at 6.00 pm. School will provide the BBQ
and we ask families to bring along a salad to share as well as your own paper plates, cutlery and
drinks. To ensure that we have enough meat, please return the reply slip attached to this newsletter
indicating how many adults and children will be coming by this Friday. We look forward to seeing
you all there.
Our AGM will be following on from the Acquaintance Night - all members of the Ramco Primary
School community are welcome to attend. Please consider nominating to be a member of
Governing Council for 2020/21.
Members with one year remaining are: Members whose term expires (or left):
- Ramon Thompson - Adam Davis
- Craig Thiel - Denise Shugg
- Jason Fridd - Belinda Steinert
- Natalie Kranz - Tracey Hansen
Once again welcome back to school everyone. I look forward to talking with you all throughout
the coming weeks in the school yard or at our Acquaintance Evening next Tuesday.
Regards,
Rob Smyth

PCW NEWS
Welcome to 2020! It’s got a nice sound to it don’t you think? It’s a new decade and an exciting new beginning for many here at Ramco.
I really like when I hear people refer to this year in the relaxed fashion of 20/20, because I associate 20/20 with a real and very positive concept of ‘20/20 vision’ or perfect eyesight – of which I do not
have!
Does 20/20 vision mean you have perfect eyesight? Is it possible to achieve even better than 20/20 vision? And what is "perfect vision" anyway?
Visual testing is very useful to determine your eyesight in standardized conditions, but it isn't predictive of the quality of your vision in all situations. For example, it can't predict how well you would see: objects that are similar in brightness to their background, coloured objects, or moving objects
I think that learning can be considered in a very similar way. Each child has the capacity to excel if given the right conditions for them and that is why Ramco Primary School is the perfect learning environment.
Each student is encouraged to be their own Powerful Learner, by striving for learning conditions that enable them to be problem solvers, self regulators and most importantly resilient learners.
So, if in 2020 you hear your child struggling with a new idea or concept, help remind them that it is a new year for new beginnings and ask them if they are allowing themselves to be Power Learners?
No-one or nothing is ever perfect, not even 20/20 vision, but we can all be our best selves. Enjoy looking towards a new future in 2020!
Your PCW, Tamara. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
