Swimming Sports A great day was had by all with some fierce competition. Congratulations to Bob Thompson and Sophie Ockwell for setting new school records and thanks to the parents who came along on the day and supported their children. The Primary swimming display is set for the afternoon of the 26th February with a postponement date the day after.

Uniform It was so great to see the whole school together at assembly today and to see them all looking just stunning in our new uniform. Thanks to you all for supporting this changeover

Coast to Coast Success A big congratulations to our own staff member Sarah Helmore who came FIRST in her age category in the Coast to Coast Team event last weekend. She is a huge inspiration for us all.

Children’s University and Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Award Programme We have appointed Adrian Black as the co-ordinator for both of these awesome programmes for 2020. Adrian will be soon asking for expressions of interest and I encourage you to consider these extra-curricular options for your child.

Thanks Thanks to our local Fire Brigade for putting us through our paces with a simulated drill on the senior side last week. This is a powerful learning opportunity for us and we always get great feedback on how to improve. Thanks to Craig and his team for taking this time in a busy fire season! Studies show that actively contributing to your community as a volunteer will have a measurable impact on your own personal wellbeing! If you are interested in joining either the local fire brigade or the equally hard working team at St John here in Culverden as a volunteer, they would love to hear from you.

Winter Sport Whilst on the subject of volunteering, winter sport season approaches and our children need you to coach, to manage and to support our local sports teams and clubs. The biggest barrier is often just confidence, however rest assured, you do have something to offer and I encourage you to move from the side line to the court/field/pitch and make a difference to young lives through what I believe is one of the most powerful positive influences in a young persons’ life. A good team, a positive physical outlet and a connection to something bigger than self.

JJuunniioorr SScchhooooll NNeewwss Welcome to Ben L, Kyle, Isaac, Frankie D, Lucy, Tessa, Namash, Ruby, Lily, Lucas, King, George, Ben J, Frankie J, Jake, Liv, Martha, Holly, Joe, Jakob, Jay, Matthew and Xaria who have joined us in Years 1-8. I’d like to take the opportunity to welcome all of them to Amuri. The last two weeks have been a settling in period while teachers establish their classroom routines and the students get to know their classmates and teachers. The teaching staff has some new faces too. I would like to welcome Maxine Cowap, Phoebe Sopp and Alannah Moke to our primary team. Maxine was here last year as a student teacher and is now working in Te Kooti. Phoebe has joined the Tekoa hub and Alannah is part of the Terako team. Welcome to everyone and we hope you enjoy being part of our Amuri team. Formal standardised testing in Reading, Writing and Maths will begin in the next fortnight and we are working with our assessment timetable to ensure that our learners are not inundated with tests and to allow for other events to occur. Last week we had our school swimming sports, which were for all swimmers who can swim a length of our school pool. Children who gained first placings from these sports in Years 4-8 will qualify for the HPSSA (Hurunui Zone) swimming sports later this month. Wednesday the 26th of February is our primary swimming display and will involve all students in Years 1-6 for swimmers of all levels. The students will be earning points for their whanau. Further details will be sent closer to this date. Now that we are swimming, please make sure your child has their swimming togs and a towel each day at school. We only get a short time for our children to make progress with their swimming skills so we need to make the most of the time we have. Every day counts! Please also name these items as with so many items of clothing about, it becomes difficult to reunite clothing with its owner. Thank you to all parents and whanau who have supplied their children with hats. We promote

being Sun Smart in Terms 1 and 4 when outside and hats are compulsory for Years 1-8. There are several children who are wearing caps which, whilst they are hats, are not suitable in providing enough shade to protect the neck and ears. Please encourage your children to wear a wide brimmed hat to school. We do have them available in the school office. Also please make sure your child's hat is named! Bible in Schools will resume after the Amuri Show. Last year the Ministry changed their requirements for children to be opted in with written permission. This year our lists remain the same and if you wish to change your child’s status from what it was last year, please email kylee@amuri.school.nz stating what you would like to do. Amuri vs Cheviot Cricket

A team of 11 keen cricketers from Years 6-8 took on a sharp Cheviot side in a Round 1 match of the NZ Post Canterbury Cup Competition. A strong batting performance from Pippa Ussher and Jack Kelly set Amuri up with a good total but Cheviot ensured they capitalised on their opportunities, eventually taking out the win and continuing through to the next round. Huge thanks to Martin Kelly for supporting the team on the day.
