High on a granite cliff in South Dakota’sBlack Hills, tower the huge carved faces offour American presidents. Together, theyconstitute the world’s largest sculpture. Themassive tableau inspires awe andbemusement. The story of MountRushmore’s creation is as bizarre and won-derful as the monument itself.

“Mount Rushmore” on American Expe-rience is the tale of a hyperactive, tempera-mental artist whose talent and determinationpropelled the project, even as his ego andobsession threatened to tear it apart. It is thestory of hucksterism and hyperbole, of amassive public works project in the midst ofan economic depression. And it is the storyof dozens of ordinary Americans who sud-denly found themselves suspended high ona cliff face with drills and hammers, as asculptor they considered insane—GutzonBorglum—directed them in the creation ofwhat some would call a monstrosity and oth-ers a masterpiece. Michael Murphy narrates.

In 1850, theJewish populationin the UnitedStates numberedless than 50,000.On the eve of theCivil War—a mere10 years later—that number tripledas immigrants fledpersecution in cen-tral Europe. Many would choose sides dur-ing the conflict, with approximately 7,000Jewish soldiers fighting for the Union and3,000 for the Confederacy. These dividedallegiances deeply split the Jewish commu-nity and tore apart some families.

Produced to coincide with the 150th an-niversary of the beginning of the Civil War,Jewish Soldiers in Blue & Gray revealsthe little-known struggles American Jewsfaced in battle and on the home front duringthe “War Between the States.”

Period photographs, rare documents, re-cently unearthed letters and artifacts, andinterviews with descendants shed light onthis fascinating chapter in American historyand powerfully illustrate the sacrifices Jewsmade for their beliefs.

When colonial estate manager William Peppe set his workers digging at a mysterioushill in Piprahwa in Northern India in 1898, he had no idea what they’d find. Just over 20feet down, they made an amazing discovery: a huge stone coffer containing five reliquaryjars, over 1,000 separate jewels, and some ash and bone. One of the jars had an inscrip-tion that appeared to say that these were the remains of the Buddha himself. This seemedto be the most extraordinary find in Indian archaeology.

“Bones of the Buddha” on Secrets of the Dead reveals how doubt and scandal havehung over this amazing find for more than 100 years.

For some, the whole thing is an elaborate hoax. For others, it is no less than the finalresting place of the leader of one of the world’s great religions, who died nearly 2,500 yearsago. For the doubters, suspicion focuses on a key figure from the time, disgraced Germanarchaeologist Dr. Anton Fuhrer. In “Bones of the Buddha,” renowned historian CharlesAllen sets out to solve this extraordinary mystery, once and for all.

“Bones of the Buddha” on Secrets of the Dead will be broadcast Tuesday, July 23rdat 9:00 p.m. (directly following the two-hour special, Buddha) and Sunday, July 28th at10:00 a.m. On HD3-1, the program airs Tuesday, July 23rd at 9:00 p.m. and Wednesday,July 24th at 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon.

Ninety years ago in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings, the greatest archaeological find in his-tory was made: The discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb and its golden treasures. It madeTutankhamen the most famous name in ancient Egyptian history. But the real story has be-come shrouded in myth—with many mysteries around the tomb unsolved to this day.

Now “Ultimate Tut,” a two-hour special on Secrets of the Dead, brings together thelatest evidence from a team of archaeologists, anatomists, geologists, and Egyptologists,to build the ultimate picture of Tutankhamen.

“Ultimate Tut” takes a 21st century approach to ancient history. The program followsgenuinely new scientific research and presents fresh insights into how Tutankhamen wasburied, why his tomb was the only one to remain intact, and the enduring enigma aroundhow he died.

“Ultimate Tut” on Secrets of the Dead can be seen Wednesday, July 10th at 8:00 p.m.and Sunday, July 14th at 9:30 p.m. On HD3-1, “Ultimate Tut” airs Wednesday, July 10that 8:00 p.m., Saturday, July 13th at 8:00 p.m. and 12:00 midnight, and also Wednesday,July 17th at 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon.

On February 28th, 1803, President Tho-mas Jefferson won approval from Congressfor a visionary project, an endeavor thatwould become one of America’s greateststories of adventure.

Twenty-five hundred dollars were appro-priated to fund a small expeditionary group, whose mission was to explore the unchartedWest. Jefferson called the group the Corpsof Discovery. It would be led by Jefferson’ssecretary, Meriwether Lewis, and Lewis’friend,William Clark.

Over the next four years, the Corps ofDiscovery would travel thousands of miles, experiencing lands, rivers, and peoples thatno Americans ever had before.

During the course of the expedition, theCorps of Discovery would come into con-tact with nearly 50 Native American tribes. Some tribes had never seen a white or blackman before Lewis and Clark. Lewis and

Clark developed a ritual that they used whenmeeting a tribe for the first time. The cap-tains would explain to the tribal leaders thattheir land now belonged to the UnitedStates, and that a man far in the east—Presi-dent Thomas Jefferson—was their new“great father.” They would also give the In-dians a peace medal with Jefferson on oneside and two hands clasping on the other, aswell as some form of presents. Moreover,

the Corps members would perform a kind ofparade, marching in uniform and shootingtheir guns.

Lewis & Clark: The Journey of theCorps of Discovery, a two-part, four-hourspecial, tells the remarkable story of the en-tire corps—not just the two famous captains, but the young army men, French-Canadianboatmen, Clark’s African-American slave, and the Shoshone woman, Sacagawea, whobrought along her infant son.

Lewis & Clark: The Journey of theCorps of Discovery airs Tuesday, July 9that 7:00 p.m. (Pt. 1) and Tuesday, July 16th,7:00 p.m. (Pt. 2). It repeats Sunday, July21st at 9:30 p.m. (Pt. 1) and Sunday, July28th at 9:30 p.m. (Pt. 2).

In a quest for world domination, the Nazis built some of thebiggest and deadliest pieces of military hardware and malevolenttechnology in history. Nazi Mega Weapons, a three-part series, recounts World War II from a unique new perspective, uncover-ing the engineering secrets of iconic megastructures, telling thestories of the engineers who designed them, and revealing how thesestructures sparked a technological revolution that changed warfareforever. To protect occupied Europe from an Allied invasion, Hitler de-manded the construction of a defensive wall stretching thousandsof kilometers from France in the south to Norway in the north.“Atlantic Wall,” part one, is the story of how this vast engineeringproject sucked in huge quantities of raw materials and men fromall over the Third Reich … and faced its ultimate test on D-Day.

To create a haven in port for their lethal U-boat submarines, theNazis built massive, impenetrable concrete submarine pens. As seenin part two, “U-Boat Pens,” these structures were too immense tobe hidden; they were constructed to withstand direct hits from eventhe biggest Allied bombs. Such was their size and strength that thesepens survive today, a testament to their engineering.

Part three, “V2,” tells the story of how scientist Werner vonBraun heralded the birth of ballistic missiles and laid the techno-logical foundation for the space race.

Nazi Mega Weapons can be seen Wednesdays at 9:00 p.m. forthree weeks, beginning July 17th on both 3-2 and HD3-1. Addi-tional plays on HD3-1 are Thursdays at 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.beginning July 18th and Saturdays at 9:00 p.m. beginning July 20th.

Since 1992, Bill Moyers and Frontline have been following thestory of two ordinary, hard-working families in Milwaukee—oneblack, one white—as they spent two decades in an extraordinarybattle to keep from sliding into poverty.

“Two American Families” chronicles the struggles of theNeumanns and the Stanleys as they try to hold onto their homes, their jobs, their health insurance, and a future for their children. Aremarkable portrait of perseverance, the 90-minute film raises un-settling questions about the changing nature of the U.S. economyand the fate of a declining middle class.

Moyers and Frontline began documenting the lives of theStanleys and the Neumanns shortly after the breadwinners in bothfamilies had lost well-paying factory jobs and were struggling toadapt to a new, global economy. After fighting for living wages formore than 20 years, have they found an economic foothold? Havethey been able to hold their families together?

Great Performances “Dancing atJacob’s Pillow: Never Stand Still” revealsthe passion, discipline, and daring of thosewho choose a life in dance. Performancesfilmed live at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Fes-tival, interviews with extraordinary artists, rare archival footage, and behind the scenesinsights bring dance to life, as the specialvisits the iconic international nexus fordance: Jacob’s Pillow.

Jacob’s Pillow began in the late 1700sas a New England farm named after thebiblical story of Jacob, who laid his headupon a rock and dreamed of a ladder toheaven. In the 1800s, Jacob’s Pillowplayed a role in American history as a sta-tion on the Underground Railroad forslaves escaping to Canada.

In 1931, when modern dance pioneer Ted Shawn bought the abandonedfarm, he and his wife, Ruth St. Denis, were America’s leading dance couple.Their Denishawn Company had popularized a new dance form rooted in the-atrical and ethnic traditions rather than those of European ballet. Together, they spawned a new generation of dance and dancers in America, includingDenishawn company member, Martha Graham, and many others.

Today, the Pillow is an idyllic mecca for artists and audiences fromaround the world, a place where dance in all its forms—from ballet to jazzto contemporary— is performed, studied, created, and celebrated.

Great Performances “Dancing at Jacob’s Pillow: Never Stand Still” airsFriday, July 26th at 9:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it airs Friday, July 26th at 8:00p.m., Saturday, July 27th at 7:00 p.m., and Sunday, July 28th at 3:00 p.m.

“ N e u r o t y p i c a l ” o nP.O.V. is a rare film amongdocumentaries about au-tism. It relates the experi-ences of this neurologicalcondition from the point ofview of autistics themselves.Via the worlds of 4-year-oldViolet, teenager Nicholas, and middle-aged wife and mother Paula, along with pro-vocative interviews with other autistics, the film recountsthe challenges they face living among “normal” people—whom many of them call “neurotypicals.”

But the film goes further, revealing the wide spectrumof autism and the creative adaptations people use to “pass”in the normal world. It throws a searching, often comiclight on what defines the “normal” mind and calls atten-tion to the subject of neurodiversity as an urgent and multi-layered issue within the 21st-century civil rights debate.Autistics have hardly ever been heard like this. Says one,“I look at neurotypical life and I’m sorry, I really don’twant to be one of you.”

“Neurotypical” on P.O.V. airs Monday, July 29th at9:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it airs Monday, July 29th at 8:00 p.m.and Tuesday, July 30th at 7:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

Should Genetically EngineeredBabies Be Prohibited?

Imagine a world free of genetic diseases, where parents control their offspring’sheight, eye color, and intelligence. The sci-ence may be closer than you think. Genesinteract in ways that we don’t fully under-stand and there could be unintended conse-quences, new diseases that result from ourtinkering. But even if the science could beperfected, is it morally wrong? Would it leadto eugenics and a stratified society whereonly the rich enjoy the benefits of geneticenhancement? Or would the real injustice be

Gustav Mahler composed portions of hisSymphony No. 10 in the summer of 1910, whilefaced with his wife’s infidelity. The followingyear, he passed away from an infection of theheart at the age of 50. The composer’s intent wasfor the incomplete score to be burned, but hiswife (who married her lover, the famous architectWalter Gropius) managed to have the sketch or-chestrated and posthumously premiered.

The hauntingly beautiful Adagio from the Symphony No. 10 is featured in The Cleve-land Orchestra in Performance: Boulez Conducts Mahler, a 90-minute special. Theperformance was recorded at Severance Hall in Cleveland in 2010, in celebration ofMahler’s 150th birthday and 100th anniversary of his death, and Mr. Boulez’s 45th yearconducting The Cleveland Orchestra.

Mahler’s highly emotional state while beginning to compose his last symphony (andwhich prompted him to consult with Sigmund Freud) is reflected in the Adagio with ro-mantic intensity in the strings, accented by melancholy brass. The movement is often pro-grammed alone, as it was the only portion of the symphony completed solely by Mahler.

Balancing the Adagio on the program is Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn (“TheYouth’s Magic Horn”), Songs for Voice and Orchestra, with vocal soloists MagdalenaKožená, mezzo-soprano, and Christian Gerhaher, baritone.

The Cleveland Orchestra in Performance: Boulez Conducts Mahler will be broad-cast Friday, July 5th at 9:00 p.m. On HD3-1, the special can be seen Friday, July 5th at8:00 p.m. and Sunday, July 7th at 3:00 p.m.

Does Science Refute God?On the fundamental question—evolution

or creation?—Americans are on the fence.According to one survey, while 61% ofAmericans believe we have evolved overtime, 22% believe this evolution was guidedby a higher power, with another 31% on theside of creationism. For some, modern sci-ence debunks many of religion’s core beliefs, but for others, questions like “Why are wehere?” and “How did it all come about?” canonly be answered through a belief in the ex-istence of God. Can science and religion co-exist?
