The all-star line-up includes: distinguished Ameri-can leader Colin L. Powell USA (Ret.); multi GrammyAward-winning music legend Gloria Estefan; “TheVoice” 2014 winner Tessanne Chin; classical cross-over artist Katherine Jenkins; and world renownedtenor Russell Watson.

More than two million men and womenserve in America’s all-volunteer militaryforce, and another three million are theirhusbands, wives, sons, and daughters. Yetover the course of two long wars in Afghani-stan and Iraq, the stories—and the service—of these military families have often beenoverlooked. The Homefront brings the truestories of these military families to a PBSaudience. The two-hour film creates a seriesof intimate portraits—following familiesthrough the difficulties of deployment, thejoys of homecoming, and the challenges ofreintegrating as a family.

General Martin Dempsey, Chairman ofthe Joint Chiefs of Staff, recalls a time whenthe military’s view on families was summedup by the phrase, “if the Army wanted youto have a family, they would have issued youone.” Now, he says, “the strength of thearmed forces of the United States is as muchabout its families as it is about its combat ca-pability.”

Viewers meet a cross-section ofAmerica’s military community: Soldiers,

Everyone has heard of Pearl Harbor and9/11, infamous attacks that are seareddeeply into our nation’s collective memory. But how many Americans are aware of thefar deadlier underwater attacks that onceraged on our shores?

Launched by German U-boats barely afew miles off our coastline, OperationDrumbeat began in the early days of 1942,inflicted devastating blows to the U.S., andoperating so close to U.S. shores that crewmembers could see the cars driving onAmerican roadways. Nova investigates thisforgotten battlefield on our doorstep in“Nazi Attack on America.”

In the program, renowned explorer andTitanic discoverer Robert Ballard and histeam make a remarkable find on the wreckof U-166, which unravels a 72-year-oldmystery about how the sub was destroyed, restores honor to a discredited U.S. naval of-ficer, and re-writes this chapter of WWIIhistory.

The investigation centers on a nearly for-gotten Nazi battlefield, over 4500 milesfrom Europe, on the doorstep of New Or-leans. Ballard and his team set out aboardhis Exploration Vessel Nautilus, surveying

NOVAthe sunken relics using remotely operatedvehicles. More than 50 wrecks litter thefloor of the Gulf of Mexico, sunk by NaziU-boats. Over three and a half years, Ger-man U-boats sank 609 ships in Americanwaters and claimed over 5,000 Americanlives. More than three million tons of cargowas lost. In return, only a handful of U-boatswould ever be sunk in American waters.

At the heart of the documentary is a fas-cinating science detective story surroundingthe wreck of U-166, sunk in the summer of1942 just 35 miles off the coast of Louisi-ana. Controversy surrounds the sinking ofthe sub shortly after the U-boat attacked apassenger ship, the S.S. Robert E. Lee.Twenty-five passengers were lost, but 404survived, rescued by Captain Herbert G.Claudius, U.S. Navy commander of escortvessel PC 566. In addition to rescuing sur-vivors, Claudius attacked the U-boat withdepth charges and concluded that he hadsunk or mortally wounded the sub. TheNavy, however, ruled that he had missed U-166; his attack was graded “F,” and he wasrelieved of command and sent back to school.

What Ballard and his team find duringthe expedition will throw the official history

In Everyday Miracles: The Genius ofSofas, Stockings and Scanners, a two-partseries, Dr. Mark Miodownik reveals how themodern world has amassed a dazzling arrayof stuff—a collection of metals, plastics, liq-uid crystals, and ceramics—all assembled invery precise ways. Miodownik is a materi-als scientist with a Ph.D. in turbine jet en-gine alloys from Oxford, whose researchareas include self-assembling materials,self-healing materials, and the psychophysi-cal properties of materials.

Miodownik begins by focusing on itemsfound in the “Home,” including razorblades, tights, plywood, and foam rubber, the last of which was discovered by mistakein the 1930s. When razor blades were in-vented by King Camp Gillette in 1901,Gillette claimed that he had saved the USeconomy $4.5 million in time saved by nothaving to visit the barber’s shop. But hecouldn’t have done it without a new massproduction technique and an insight intohow to harden steel.

“Away,” explores materials that have hada huge impact on our ability to get around. The program reveals the impact the adventof the bicycle had on the national gene pool, and how the concept of levitation providedthe spiritually inclined to set out in search oftheir inner self. The bicycle was a dead lossuntil 1888 when the right materials arrived;namely, reliable steel production and theability to make seamless steel tubing col-lided with pneumatic tires. For the first time, bicycles were light and comfortable andeasy to use. In the lab, Miodownik demon-strates “Prince Rupert’s Drops,” and ex-plains why we should be grateful for thesedroplets of exploding glass.

Everyday Miracles:

The FBI was unaccountable and untouchable until 1971, when a group of citizens un-covered its illegal domestic spying programs. On March 8th, 1971, a band of suburban par-ents, university professors, and community leaders broke into a small FBI field office inMedia, Pennsylvania, just outside Philadelphia. Calling themselves the Citizens’ Commis-sion to Investigate the FBI, the eight activists took hundreds of secret files and shared themanonymously with select members of Congress and the public. The heist yielded a troveof evidence proving that the FBI was deliberately working to intimidate civil rights activ-ists and nonviolent Vietnam War protesters, among others. The most significant revela-tion was of a massive illegal domestic surveillance program overseen by FBI director J.Edgar Hoover.

Despite one of the largest investigations ever conducted, the FBI never solved the mys-tery of the break-in, and the identities of those responsible remained a secret—until now.For the first time, the members of the Citizens’ Commission have spoken out. “1971” onIndependent Lens is their story.

Weaving together exclusive interviews with national news coverage of the burglary anddramatized scenes of the events, “1971” unfolds with the tension of a suspense thriller, withhaunting echoes of today’s questions of privacy in a new era of government surveillance.

“1971” on Independent Lens will be broadcast Monday, the 18th at 9:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it airs Monday, the 18th at 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday, the 19th at 7:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

Over 100 million Americans suffer withchronic pain every day. Dr. Mitchell Yasshas found that many suffer needlessly. ThePain Prescription suggests an approachthat can resolve pain quickly, safely, and ef-fectively without surgery or medication.

In about 90 percent of cases, the cause isactually a muscular weakness or imbalance. The Yass Method focuses on finding thetrue source of the pain and then using simpleexercises to find lifelong relief.

Yass discusses the most common areaswhere people experience pain; lays outsimple tests that examine things like rangeof motion, walking patterns, and posture;and teaches how to use this information todetermine whether your pain is muscular orstructural. If it is structural, one can choosesurgery knowing that the outcome will likelybe good. But if the pain is muscular, one canuse the easy, step-by-step exercises and rou-tines Yass offers to resolve the pain.
