Q Magazine analysis

June 2014 – Lily Allen

MastheadThe masthead is in the top left hand corner and takes up about a fifth of a page (7.5cm x 7cm). It is a red background with a white Q – which is a sans serif font. The colour scheme throughout the front cover is Red, White and Black. I may use this idea for my masthead because it is a successful magazine and the masthead is a part of this. The fonts used on the front cover are all a range of sizes and the fonts also differ. The colours used in the writing is also stays within the colour scheme apart from the blue writing “Last Noel inter- view” and “Ricky Gervais”.

ImageThe image is directly in the centre of the front cover. The model – Lily Allen – look angry and fierce, it is an action shot which relates to “Kicks off”. Lily Allen is also looking in to the camera. The text is high quality and the background is in focus. It has also been manipulated through graphical editing. One third of the colour image is covered by text. The front cover connotes the magazine quality because it is a famous person that people will recognise. Also, the colours and the layout make the magazine look professional.

Cover Lines

The magazine has a plus and 4 cover stories which all suit with the purpose of the magazine. The colour scheme is continued throughout the cover lines. They are not all the same fonts or sizes. The text shows that the audience is multi-gender because it is blue and red which appeals to each gender.

House StyleThe house style is mainly Red, White and Black. The Red shoes that the model is wearing connotes this house style as it is the same as the ‘Q’ box. The layout and fonts and the boxes will become their convention because they are noticeable in many of the Q magazines.

I like the picture that overlaps the tagline because it breaks the normal conventions.
