When The Lounge closed after Moonfest 2011, it left a void in the 500 block of Clematis Street. But while the bar had a loyal following and filled a niche, its owners had grander plans for the small, 1,700-square-foot space.

Enter Hullabaloo, the latest venture from Rodney Mayo, who also owns Longboards and Howley’s in West Palm Beach, Dada and Tryst in Delray Beach, plus Kapow! and Dubliner in Boca Raton. Mayo was among the first entrepreneurs to revitalize Clematis Street back in 1987 when he opened Respectable Street Cafe. He continues to push the envelope in providing high-quality food and drinks, yet still retaining the edgy

vibe his establishments are known for.

At Hullabaloo, the vibe is New York City loft meets 1930s jazz. The cocktails feature fresh muddled fruits and craft spirits. The food is Italian-influenced small plates crafted by chef Fritz Cassel, formerly of Gratify gastropub in West Palm Beach. Open since Jan. 25, Hullabaloo brings a sophisticated new presence to Clematis’ west end.

It’s open from 5pm seven nights a week but may soon add lunch and Sunday brunch like the neighboring Longboards. The restaurants share a back patio and classic Airstream trailer, providing a chill-out spot that’s like being in two places at once. Pop into Longboards for lobster sliders, then back into Hullabaloo for a craft cocktail.

But Hullabaloo stands on its own as a culinary destination. Despite the small space, Cassel’s menu is extensive and highlights the wood-burning oven in the open kitchen. It includes small bites, salads, sandwiches, antipasto, pasta, pizza, steaks, pork, chicken, fresh fish and shrimp, plus desserts. There are options for any palate or budget.

Hullabaloo’s bar also fills a gap on Clematis, where craft cocktails are rare. Mayo and his old partner at The Lounge, Jon Elu, have spared no expense in stocking the finest ingredients for their mixologists. The drinks are named for recording artists who met untimely deaths, and the recipes are just as provocative. There’s also an eclectic selection of craft beer, wine, and coffee.

While Mayo and Elu say The Lounge will most likely rise again in a nearby space, they and partner Michael Mayo can stand a short rest on their laurels at Hullabaloo.

This is not just some of the best hip hop, this is some of the greatest music of our era!

Solillaquists of Sound return to South Florida after a few years of traveling the U.S. and touring though Europe. Based out of Orlando, this dynamic hip hop group will blow your mind, ears, and eyes with their intelligent (and badass) musical composition, unique aesthetics, and their politically and spiritually conscious lyrics.

Utilizing three MPC beat machines, poetry, heavenly vocals, and rhymes, Solilla explodes positive energy all over

our area, encouraging us to dance, think, and be active in our every day lives. Solilla also offers a platform and space for local activists to come and spread their message. Their music re-energizes those of us burnt out in our fight for social justice, and creates a great night out for those of us who like to party. They are a hip hop group that shares tangible ideas on how to make things better.

Solilla is on the verge of dropping their new album The Wall Part 2 and building a Creative Center for Kids in Orlando. Alexandrah (vocalist) is fronting another amazing project called “Beautiful Chorus” which is exactly what it sounds like. Swamburger (lyricist) just made a track with Aesop Rock and runs a gallery, B-Side, which promotes graffiti/underground artists, and you never know where in the world of hip hop Davinci (beat maker/composer) is going to pop up.

Solilla has shared the stage with the likes of Sage Francis, Michael Franti & Spearhead, KRS-One, Bad Brains, Ozomatli, El-P and Lyrics Born. Their music infuses elements of hip hop, dubstep, prog-rock, afrobeat, folk music, epic movie scores, and whatever else they pull from their genius minds. There are plenty of music videos online to carry you through the journey of what they have been up to in the last few years since they last visited us.

Solilla will be playing with local hip hop movers Eric Biddines and Lox the Rippa. There will also be a producer beat battle. You can submit your events to [email protected] with subject “BEAT BATTLE”. “Ride it out, this is your day.” - www.solilla.com Solillaquists of Sound w/ Eric Biddines & Lox tha Rippa March 22 @ 8pm ~ Tuesday Lee Afton

The best headlines by the Onion, the 25-year-running parody newspaper, provoke a piquant mixture of emotions. Running on humor that’s dry as a bone, at their best, they sum up the state of the real world and beg the question if we should laugh or cry.

Take, for instance, a story last month lampooning troubled singer Chris Brown: “Chris Brown’s Agent Suggests Suicide Could Be a Great Career Move.” Sure, it’s funny because Chris Brown is an asshole who only tarnishes his image every time he leaves the house. But it’s also depressing, on a deeper level, because, well, he persists the public eye anyways, in spite of

all the Onion headline-type scolding in the world.

Think of the Onion, perhaps, as a kind of sardonic Greek chorus to the hail of bad and plain old weird news from across the country. So what better place for the publications’ crew to tackle than super-weird South Florida? On Sunday, March 10, top Onion writers arrive at Parker Playhouse in Fort Lauderdale for An Evening With the Onion. The live event is sponsored in part by a host of local thinking-people’s organizations: Radio-Active Records, Blindspot Productions, Salty Eggs, Books and Books, the Palm Beach International Film Festival, and O Cinema.

For the format of the show, think something like a live-action version of The Onion News Network, the two-year-old program on IFC. Fans can enjoy a run-down of irony-drenched, humorous takes on major national and international events, as well as a section devoted specifically to South Florida. It’s hard to guess what local madness they’ll riff on, as by the time they arrive, any number of new, bizarre events is guaranteed to have happened. Bringing things full circle with South Florida flavor is an opening set by standup comedian Adrian Mesa.

Superfans, take note: Regular admission costs $30 to $60 depending on where you sit, but for $125, you can do the ultra-deluxe version of the evening. That price gets you front-row seating; wine, cheese, and appetizers; and, most importantly, an afterparty with a meet-and-greet and autograph session.

Sunday, March 10 6:30pm at Parker Playhouse, 707 NE 8th St., Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $29.95 to $125; all ages. Call 954-462-0222, or visit wwwparkerplayhouse.com

AN EVENING WITH THE ONION

...and even more bands!

Florida is a big-ass state. The panhandle is practically its own republic, as far removed culturally from Miami and the Keys as you can get. And then there’s that plastic tourist mecca in the middle. But there’s no reason the bands that troll all 447 miles of America’s wang shouldn’t feel more connected to one another – part of the same musical bloodstream that birthed artists as disparate as Iron & Wine, Hot Water Music, Torche and Less Than Jake. And there’s a new label, Spirit Cat, that is in the very business of connecting Florida bands, packaging them together on tours and releasing their music in compilations – on cassette tape, no less.

“We liked this format because it still had the warmth and organic feel of vinyl,”

says Spirit Cat founder Djem Barree, formerly of the Gainesville band Oh Fortuna.

“It is also a lot cheaper. We also like it because we would be able to do every step of the process out of our home – making the master tape, dubbing and packaging is all done in my living room. With this comes a great feeling of pride.”

Spirit Cat released its first tape, The Voyage of the Great Dogcraft, last November, featuring four exciting bands from the Gainesville and Tallahassee regions – including the college radio-ready dream-pop of Aircraft, which Paste recently called the No. 1 Band in Florida You Should Listen to Now. Some tapes are still on sale for $5 at spiritcat.bandcamp.com; you can also purchase the label’s newest compilation tape, which was released in January, as well as full-length cassettes of some of the label’s favorite Florida artists.

“We aren’t blowing up the blog world, but that isn’t our goal,” Barree says. “We really want this to be a Florida thing. Since the bands are from Florida, we would like them to be recognized by listeners in Florida. We plan on a Spirit Cat tour coming to South Florida in the future.”

Three tracks on this month’s PureHoney free download comp come courtesy of Spirit Cat. Bands include: Ex-Breathers, Ben Varian and Woset. ~ John Thomason
