Mixing the cavernous atmosphere of goth with the synth-driven dance appeal of new wave, The Faint’s 2001 effort Dance Macabre was a pioneering album that forced indie and Goth kids alike onto the dance floor. Whirling their bodies to swarming, squiggly synthesizers over tunes dealing with suicide and “poison spilling from” one’s throat, The Faint became leaders of this new wave of punk-flavored electronic dance music. This sound coming from a band based in Omaha, Nebraska, coupled with the fact that their label, Saddle Creek, also peddled Bright Eye’s emotive indie country twang, made it all the more distinctive.

Two more records followed, ’04 Wet From Birth—a more ambitious and slightly more guitar driven record and ’08 Fasciinatiion—a sleeker-yet-more-erratic self-released effort. Then the group, out of nowhere, decided to go on an indefinite hiatus, leaving oodles of electro clash-dance fans in the lurch.

“I don’t think we had any plans to play anymore, but we didn’t have plans not to either, we weren’t ready to make a record, we didn’t feel it was worth it,” said Faint’s lead singer Todd Fink in an interview with PureHoney about the band’s 2008 abrupt breakup. Fink, the soft-spoken, affable Faint vocalist was on his cell phone in-between industry shindigs at SXSW in Austin, Texas while gearing up to performing with one of his side projects Digital Leather. According to Fink, the recording of Fasciinatiion proved to be an arduous process, resulting in members formulating their own headstrong opinions so extreme that it was hard for the band to agree on anything. “We weren’t on the same page,” said Fink about the recording process. The four-year recording journey of Fasciinatiion broke the camel’s back and changed the dynamic of the gang. “I worried that if we made another record, it would feel watered down, “said Fink. Therefore, the band decided to take a break to pursue other options. “I felt like we all wanted to do something else, and together we didn’t know what we wanted to do artistically.” Fink moved from his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska to Los Angeles and then to Athens, Georgia-- a city where he met his wife Orenda Fink (they married in 2005) member of defunct dream pop duo Azure Ray. Why the move from Omaha to such polar opposite extremes such as L.A. and Athens, Georgia? “There is no sense in moving unless it’s going to be somewhere entirely different right?” affirmed Fink.

After a few years, the longing for family drove Fink and his wife back to Omaha, where Fink’s parents, grandparents and siblings reside. Additionally the couple already owned a home in the Midwest city, so the lure of not having rent to pay was rather pragmatic. Upon Fink’s return to his hometown, he started practicing music with his younger brother Clark Baechle, The Faint’s former drummer. Little by little, the original group began practicing together again, and the decision was made to go back into the studio and give it another crack.

This time around, the band decided to take a different approach than it did with Fasciinatiion. “When we came back together, we said this is going to be fun or it isn’t going to be anything at all”. The primary objective was for the entire troupe to have fun again and enjoy the process. Fink told us the sessions were extremely loose and easy-going.

While recording The Faint’s seventh full-length, Doom Abuse (out April 8), the band took a vastly different approach; they’d book studio time without a clear formulated plan of what would be recorded. “We really put ourselves on the spot,” says Fink. “We booked recording time before we had any songs really laid out, I think that pressure was good for us.”

During this process they learned that having a deadline was critical. Was their a chance they’d choke? “It was a possibility,” confirmed Fink, “but that wasn’t really an option, we all agreed that whatever we made of this record would be what we make of it, and we will be ok with it. People have asked if it’s an angry album, I think it’s more cathartic the anything else, kind of like primal scream therapy where you scream for your health.”

Doom Abuse is a raw, dark effort that seems to reference the group’s ’99 effort Blank Wave Arcade. Fink admits it is not a poppy number, but added, “We didn’t get back together to make catchy jingles, we got back together to have a blast.”

Fink, who turned 40 this year, is looking forward to the tour which begins mid-April and looks forward to enjoying a few cortaditos (Cuban coffee) during the group’s stop in South Florida on Tuesday, May 6 at Culture Room. “We were burned out after the last record, after doing it for more than a decade, but it wasn’t that we ever got tired of playing shows, or making music, that never gets old.” Download ‘Help in the Head’ from their new album for free on this months PureHoney Promo Compilation! ~Alex Rendon

Kyle Hess A.K.A. Kyle Smile just might be willing to tackle any art form. Lately, he’s been painting murals at friends’ houses around West Palm Beach. But he’s done some serious walls, too. Last year, he did the main mural outside The Vagabond where Bob Dylan’s face once appeared. And he painted the back patio of Respectable Street with a cartoonish scene of aliens in helmets, invading an urban space as UFOs shoot laser beams from above. The West Palm Beach based artist describes his drawing style as “creepy but cute and cartoonish.” Sometimes, he creates ugly creatures doing adorable things like holding flowers in a field. Out of all of his many characters, he’s only repeated one – the dinosaur. That cute and friendly dinosaur

scored one of the fold-out centerfolds in this month’s PureHoney. And he’s showing up again at Hess’ art show later this month. On Saturday, April 12, Kyle will open up his first solo show at Coastars Coffee Bar in Lake Worth, where his works will be on display through mid-May. The exhibition will consist of original paintings, prints, and art on objects such as creepy faces on coconuts and painted up lunchboxes. Word has it a strange robot head made of reclaimed electronics will pop up, but you’ll have to go to find out. “I constantly take apart TVs, VCRs and electronics,” he says. “I have a suitcase full of weird wires and computer brains.” When Hess isn’t at his day job, he spends his free time working on a variety of projects. This can mean he’s focused on his stop motion animation or in music mode recording chilled-out ambient music. Or he plays his accordion and records whatever sound suits his mood. The prolific artist still has other goals he’d like to conquer. “If I could do whatever I wanted, I would make TV commercials,” he says. “The last ten years I’ve had this thing in the back of my mind to create them. I want to direct.” When he was a kid, commercials inspired him especially ones for Skittles. “I loved seeing Skittles commercials,” he says. “I remember they had this one with the Skittles falling from the sky. You don’t see those anymore.” But he wouldn’t stop there. “I would love to make my own movies. And a couple cartoons.” Download his song ‘Carry On’ for free on; this months PureHoney Promo Compilation. Kyle Smile Hess’ opening reception is from 7-11pm on Saturday, April 12 at Coastars Coffee Bar, located at 12 S J Street, in Lake Worth. His solo show will run through mid-May 2014. Most people know him as the “King of the Surf Guitar,” and for his enduring hit song “Miserlou,” popularized in the soundtrack to “Pulp Fiction.” But there’s a lot more to Dick Dale, the seemingly indestructible rock ‘n’ roll legend who will be making his SunFest debut this year at age 77 on Wednesday, April 30.

Dale is still battling the ravages of cancer that sidelined him for several years. But he’s made an amazing comeback, touring relentlessly and hitting South Florida clubs for the past

three years. Now he finds himself on the main SunFest stage opening for Kid Rock.

But if you know anything about Dick Dale, his resilience should come as no surprise. Over the course of nearly 60 years in the music business, he has established himself as a renaissance man determined to live life to the fullest, without drugs and alcohol. You probably know that Dale invented surf music and helped Fender develop the modern guitar amp, but here are a few more fascinating facts about a fascinating man:

Before playing electric guitar, Dale learned the drums, ukulele and trumpet. He has also mastered the banjo, piano, organ, harpsichord, trombone, xaxophone, harmonica, xylophone and accordion. He claims that he rarely picks up the guitar, except when going on stage. And though known mainly as an instrumentalist, he also sings lead vocals in his current band.

He started in the music biz in 1955 as a DJ in California, then played alongside Johnny Cash, Ernest Tubb and Gene Autry on a country music TV show.

He was the first rock guitarist to perform on television’s iconic Ed Sullivan Show in the early 1960s. (Check out the YouTube clips!)

His groundbreaking guitar technique influenced not only generations of surf guitarists, but also such rock gods as Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen.

Dale beat the odds by overcoming cancer several times in his career. During a scare in the 1970s, Hendrix referred to Dale in the song “Third Stone from the Sun” when he said: “You’ll never hear surf music again.”

Over the course of his life, Dale also became an accomplished surfer, artist, photographer, horseman, exotic animal trainer, martial arts expert, archer, pilot and home-builder. He likes to say that he thrives at being a “jack of all trades and a master of none.” Guitar fans may beg to differ with that.

The Bear and Bird Boutique + Gallery is the spawn of South Florida’s pride and joy comic shop and pop culture utopia, TATE’S Comics + Toys + Videos + More. Needless to say this gallery goes beyond just art on the walls with Mrs. Tate herself, Amanda Magnetta-Ottati, as curator. The boutique element functions as “museum store” to accompany the gallery of rotating work that aims to stay inside a price range attainable by more than just the top 2%. Featuring up and coming artists, both locally and nationally, Amanda keeps it interesting by creating diverse shows such as the up coming Quintessential Quintet Art Show.

Keeping it interesting while keeping it accessible, this show features five unique artists with no other direction from Amanda other than to “do work that best reflects their interests and what they feel are their

strengths.” The five featured artists are as follows...

Danielle Estefan is playing with the idea of the “selfie” for the Quintessential Quintet exhibit. “I’m trying to capture the playfulness of it, the claiming of identity and the darker undertone…the complex need to hide or mask insecurities.”

Erika Taguchi-Newton, local illustrator and designer known under the pseudonym “Ravengirl” will be displaying her dreamlike, whimsical nature-inspired pieces.

Cary Polkovitz is currently at work on a graphic novel titled “Ukiyo”. Cary’s background has evolved from his early roots as a cartoonist in the early 90s to art direction and graphic design. His pieces demonstrate a graphic novelists ability to capture character and narrative in a single image.

In true Tates fashion, cartoonist and illustrator Jeremy Eaton is planning a series of interpretations of classic comic book imagery that he describes as “a literal carnival of high pulp drama, mystery, horror, super heroic action and humor”.

Californian artist Michael Fleming will be showing a group of watercolors with the theme he describes as “decayed civilization/overgrown nature”. Staying true to his background in children’s media and character design, he assures that this body of work will “of course feature cute critters.”

The Quintessential Quintet Art Show kicks off with an opening night reception, Friday, May 2nd from 7-10pm, and will remain on exhibit through June 21st at the Bear and Bird Boutique + Gallery located inside and upstairs at TATE’S Comics + Toys + Vidoes + More at 4566 N University Drive, Lauderhill FL. Subculture booms out of the newest addition to West Palm Beach’s famed Clematis Street at Subculture Coffee café and roaster. This coffeehouse-lover’s must-see spot expresses every facet of a new wave surrounding the coffeehouse society. I am delighted to see co-creators Rodney Mayo and Sean Scott’s vision for a coffeehouse which promotes nothing if not quality come to life. In store, decoupage pictures (Kayla Whitehurst) plaster the café’s stylishly visible air ducts with the faces of some of the inventive and radical minds that make up the underbelly of the American way. Such faces as Ken Kesey, Janis Joplin and Edgar Allen Poe commemorate the very essence of a subculture consisting of

those who promote individualism and celebrate the uniqueness of every man in opposition of a larger society that threatens to destroy it.

“We are in the third wave of coffee brewing” Scott informs me. “In the first wave,” Scott continues “coffee intake was more specifically about caffeine consumption and quality was not such a factor. Instant coffee, like Sanka for example, was huge!” Scott goes on to educate me about the arrival of today’s “third wave” movement from the first, with a second huge explosion of distributers advertising quality with quantity (i.e. the Starbucks era). What is blatantly obvious though, is that the “quality” offered by big name corporations falls short of delivering quality as is produced out of coffeehouses like Mayo and Scott’s.

Keeping with the promotion of individualism, the cafe will soon offer customers the option to choose their own style of beans to roast in-store, bag and take to-go to enjoy premium hand-roasted coffee in the comfort of their own home. Also on the horizon for Subculture Coffee is a project very close to Scott’s heart. “We’re going to be offering coffee cupping classes.” Essentially with these classes, Scott hopes to educate people about the roasting process much like a vineyard’s wine tasting would educate about viniculture.

Another exciting endeavor for the café’s owners is the distribution of their beloved beans. Much of Mayo’s other establishments (including Howley’s, The Dubliner Irish Pub and Dada) are already supplying Subculture’s finest java.

There is no better time to jump on this especially honorable and undoubtedly scrumptious bandwagon. Visit www.facebook.com/subculturecoffee to find out more and read the full article online at www.purehoneymagazine.com/subculture-coffee ~Danielle E. DiSpigna

Let’s party the American Sweatshop way. This Fort Lauderdale-based artist collective –illustrators, filmmakers and musicians-- sprung up 2 years ago in hopes to showcase underrepresented art. Paul , Adam and Greg of the group are even working as concept artists for a few new apps being released in the months to come.

Stay Tooned is the group’s next art show featuring a nod to cartoon galore. The exhibition name is a play on words from the 1990s era when television hosts used to say, “Stay tuned,” alerting audiences that it was time to break for commercials.

The two-day show will be held at the recently opened Studio 259 in Deerfield Beach. Participating artists include Albert Lichi, Shane Watt, Christopher Ian MacFarlane, Renda Writer, Gregory N. Dirr, and Paul Mcenery.

The venue consists of three rooms and a garage next door. Each room will showcase a collection of works. Accompanying what is on display, attendees will also view hand-drawn cartoons, large enough to take a life-sized form. American Sweatshop is well known for its fine and quick live illustrations.

At most parties, the fun doesn’t begin until you soak up the room and mingle. Not this shindig. Expect a “shot-gun blast effect” when entering the doorways at Studio 259. Hey now, first impressions count big time. You’ll just have to see for yourself what zany tricks are up these guys’ sleeves.

Music fans can get their fill of high-intensity sounds. Bands Montage, Milk Spot, and Suns of the Morning Star are on the bill. Live music performances will be held in the warehouse’s garage with a bit of a twist. To elevate the listening experience, the bands will play in the loft above the audience. Heyyy, now.

The real treat is the blacklight art room where live-illustration art will engulf the walls with a mystical glow. Here, DJ OswaldoFuture will provide sincerely mood-altering tunes.

Anyone who dresses up in a wild and over-the-top costume gets in free... especially those clad as bunny rabbits, aliens and Santa Claus. Food and beverages will also be served. You’re in for a fantastical time!

Keep an eye out for next months issue which will feature an American Sweatshop poster! Sneak peek below...

Stay Tooned runs 6:30pm to 2am April 4 & 5 at Studio 259, located at 259 Goolsby Blvd., in Deerfield Beach. Call 561-305-7566. Entry is $5 or FREE with over the top costume. More Info: www.americansweatshop.usEvent video promo: www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yXUZDkOHps~Andrea Richard

Punk-rock has always been a genre that has housed disparate philosophies under a single roof. The ‘80s saw punk-rock bands experiment with a militant voice to express their disgust with the establishment, with groups like Crass and Discharge leading the assault, absolutely consumed by a shared mission to build sonic weaponry out of ideas. But there were bands simultaneously approaching the fledgling genre from a more humorous angle,

crafting irreverent satire with an attitude of being too fucked to really care. Of the myriad groups that attempted the satirical side of punk, none really pulled the trick off with the grace and charm of Philadelphia’s The Dead Milkmen.

The group was born in the tail end of 1979 out singer/songwriter/guitarist Joe Genaro’s warped, conceptual home recordings -- complete with a fictitious backstory, pseudonym’d band members (Genaro went by Joe Jack Talcum at the time), and a biting sarcasm that was always just angry enough to earn the group a space at the punk’s table. For anyone familiar with the ever hilarious “Bitchin’ Camaro,” there is no-doubt that Genaro and Co. were but a step or two away from brilliant sketch comedians. The band -- which included drummer Dean Sabatino (Dean Clean), bassist Dave Schulthise (Dave Blood), and keyboardist Rodney Linderman (Rodney Anonymous) -- were deft comedic improvisors with a collegiate charm that fueled the music’s humor. Despite the jokes, the Dead Milkmen catalog is rife with tidbits of hidden intellectual fiber for those seeking more more than just a laugh.

For a band that made its bones through its novelty, the Dead Milkmen grew a serious cult following that would eventually blossom into major success including an international hit with “Punk Rock Girl” in 1988, some love from early Mtv, and a brush with a major label that ended in as ugly a manner as one would expect considering the oil and water history of punk bands on majors.

The band split in the mid ‘90s over the stress that accompanies success and its members focused on their own intellectual pursuits like college linguistics programs and journalism. Unfortunately, original bassist Dave Schulthise tragically committed suicide in 2004, ending any reunion hopes fans may have had in the early aughts. However, 2008 saw the Dead Milkmen return to form, complete with new material, sporadic touring, and the same trademark wit that initially delivered the band from a Philly area novelty to an international success.

The Dead Milkmen will be making one of its rare appearances at Miami’s Grand Central on April 11th. The features South Florida’s own punk-rock powerhouse, Sandratz, and Hileah’s gift to eclectic pop, Humbert. ~David Von Bader
