April  28,  2012  Lakeside  Golf  Club

 Honoring  Susan  and  Victor  Georgino

Dear Providence Families,

At Providence High School, our Core Values of Respect, Compassion, Justice, Excellence, and Stewardship are a very important part of our community. These Core Values are not just listed in handbooks and posted on classroom and office walls. These values are daily goals of all of our students, faculty, and staff members. We spend a great deal of time discussing these values, and we encourage all members of the Providence community to embrace them.

This year a new way for us to promote these values and reward those students who best exemplify them is through our “Student of the Month” program. Each month our faculty and staff nominate students who best exemplify one of our Core Values. For the month of February, the Core Value of Compassion was chosen.

The faculty and staff named Sophomore Vishnu Prasad as the Student of the Month who best lives our Core Value of Compassion. Vishnu is a caring and compassionate young man. He reaches out to people in need, and he gives comfort to them. Vishnu received a certificate of recognition, an AMC movie pass, and his name was displayed on the reader boards. Congratulations to this fine young man!

For the month of March, the Student of the Month will be a student who best exemplifies our Core Value of Justice.

We have so many students who live our Core Values on a daily basis. I was lucky to help chaperone the 11th grade Close-Up trip to Washington, DC. Our 37 students were engaged, focused, and very well behaved. I was so pleased to witness their outstanding behavior on the airplane, at the hotel, and at the conference sessions. They were so responsible and mature. I have also enjoyed watching our amazing varsity basketball teams this season. The girls’ and boys’ teams play hard and are disciplined and spirited. Congratulations to Coach Bencze and Coach Baskerville on their historic seasons!

Letter from Dean of Students, Mr. Dennis Bullock

www.providencehigh.org Volume 6, Number 7

It  seems  this  year  is  moving  at  light  speed,  and  though  it  is  by  far  not  over,  it  is  time  to  start  discussing  next  year.  This  is  a  heads-‐up  for  all  returning  parents  regarding  uniforms  for  next  year—we  want  to  give  you  proper  time  to  adjust  to  our  plans.      First  of  all,  we  want  to  inform  you  that  Providence  will  have  its  basic  uniform  supplied  exclusively  by  Crown  Uniforms  in  Burbank.  No  other  uniform  company  will  supply  PHS  uniforms  any  longer.  We  have  gone  with  Crown  based  upon  convenience  and  price.  They  are  located  in  Burbank  (3800  W.  Burbank  Blvd.);  other  competing  stores  have  moved  out  of  our  immediate  area.  We  feel  confident  that  Crown  will  serve  our,  and  your,  needs  well—we  will  be  in  constant  contact  with  them  throughout  the  upcoming  Spring  and  Summer  to  assure  this.      Second,  we  want  you  to  know  that  several  aspects  of  PHS’  uniform  and  uniform  policy  will  change  for  the  2012-‐2013  school  year,  and  this  in  some  cases  will  require  some  purchases  on  your  part—but  not  in  all  cases;  we  are  sensitive  to  your  costs.  Most  notably,  pants/shorts  and  skirts/skorts,  and  polos  and  cardigans  must  be  bought  from  Crown.      There  will  be  much  more  detail  coming  in  a  letter  soon!  As  always,  feel  free  to  contact  me  with  ANY  questions  or  concerns.      GO  PIONEERS!!!

The Math Department wishes to share the results of the AMERICAN MATH COMPETITION held on February 7th.Congratulations to all the winners and participants!

Parent Service Hours Opportunities

Service Hours for the 2011-2012 school year must be completed by March 30, 2012

Involvement in fewer than 40 hours will result in a billing of $10.00 for each hour.

Ms. Paolone needs help at the Prom, as well as with the Prom fundraisers (lunch and break sales). This entails picking up food or donating bakery items. Her club, Rock and Roll A to Z, is also in need of some donations/improvements for this year. Contact: [email protected] She can offer two (2) service hours for each hour served/every $10 spent. The Annual Math/Science/Technology Fair will take place on March 13th in the SAC. We need parent volunteers, cookies, water, and other supplies. If interested in earning parent service hours please call Mrs. Ashjian ext. 265. The Math, Science and Technology Fair Committee needs 20 big-ticket items to raffle among the participating students. We need i-Pods, i-Phones, lap tops, tablets, graphing calculators... appealing items for teenagers. Contact Mr. David Bird, ext. 407 or at [email protected] Donate to the Gala Silent Auction for Service Hours. You can earn one (1) Parent Service Hour for every $10 in value of whatever you donate. For example, if you donate a $50 Best Buy gift card you would receive five (5) Parent Service Hours. Anything you bring in from soliciting businesses also counts, so you don't have to spend money to get service hour credits. Please come to room 403 to pick up solicitation letters and donor forms.

Current Service Hours recorded by Family Key can be viewed on the following: • Portal under the Parents tab - "Parent Service Hours"

Please check the portal, website, or parent newsletter for service hour and donation opportunities

The Fresh & Easy Fundraiser was a Success!

The Fresh & Easy events were a great success, thanks to your support. Between collecting receipts and our January Shopping Night, PHS will be receiving over $800! Shopping night was a lot of fun -- thank you to our cheerleaders who helped out by passing out samples to customers. Parent Board members and students were on hand to help customers bag groceries, and we gave away raffle prizes. Look for this event next year!

From the Desk of the College Counselor, Clara Gaitan Senior Parents:

• Your children are beginning to hear from college and universities. Please encourage them to continue working hard this semester. All schools will require a final transcript and admissions are always provisional - schools will rescind acceptances if grades drop!

• Encourage your seniors to continue working on scholarships. At the beginning of each month students are e-mailed a newsletter with scholarship opportunities. Ask your student to print out the newsletter for you and encourage them to apply to the scholarships listed.

• College Placement Exams: These exams are required by the California Public University Systems to determine a student’s placement in English or math courses in college. Students may be exempt from these exams based on SAT or AP scores. Check the following websites to determine if your student is exempt from taking the exams:

1. California State University: English Proficiency Test (EPT) http://www.csumentor.org/planning/high_school/ept.asp & Entry Level Mathematics Exam: http://www.csumentor.org/planning/high_school/elm.asp

2. University of California Entry Level Writing Requirement (formerly known as the Subject A Requirement): www.ucop.edu/elwr

Junior Parents,

I have met with all juniors to review their class selections for next year. Please ask your student about our meeting and continue (or begin!) discussing college plans. Juniors should begin the college search now by using Naviance, surfing the web and visiting college campuses. During our meeting, you student received access to Naviance, the College Handbook, and information regarding the SAT. Juniors and parents should take time to explore some campuses, and if possible, take advantage of spring break and schedule some college visits!

Junior tips for getting ahead:

• Begin your college search today. Naviance has two great search engines and important statistical information regarding past Providence graduates and college acceptances.

• Visit college campuses and take tours during spring break and the summer. • Register for the ACT and/or SAT and Subject tests. • Consider enrolling in an academic summer program at a university or college. • Attend the National College Fair at the Pasadena Convention Center on Monday, April 30, 2012

from 6:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m. It is a great opportunity to speak to college admissions representatives and get information regarding majors and academic opportunities. For more information on this college fair, please visit www.nacacnet.org and click on the “events/training” and then click on “college fairs”.

Family Pledge Program

The Family Pledge Program supports every student, teacher and program on campus. Click on the link below or find it on the school’s homepage. Every dollar helps a Providence Family in need.
