What is a toothbrush handle?

Objectives

• The student will design a toothbrush handle using the design process as follows: Fast sketching, 3D sketching, conceptual models and ergonomic model.

Page 4: Prototypes 1 First Project

Objectives

• The student will perform testing and evaluation through focus group, in order to define the most appropriate form (to build the ergonomic model).

Example: Maestro toothbrush for the luxury by Chow Eason

Design a toothbrush handle

• The student will research (benchmarking) on the object to be designed and define a concept.

Design a toothbrush handle

• Based on a concept, you will do fast sketching and 3D Sketching for define the initial shape and dimensions.

Page 7: Prototypes 1 First Project

Design a toothbrush handle

• Based on the chosen proposal in sketching and 3D sketching, you build a conceptual model with rigid material (“pink” foam in this case).

Page 8: Prototypes 1 First Project

Design a toothbrush handle

• Then you will build four more conceptual models to evaluate in a focus group (five total).

Page 9: Prototypes 1 First Project

Conceptual model raw (resurface) to evaluate in focus group

Page 10: Prototypes 1 First Project

• Finally you will build an ergonomic model considering all the changes and comments from the previous focus group (about size, shape, perceptions, etc.).

Ergonomic model• Anthropometric and ergonomic features.

• Must to be resistant to be manipulated.

• Model in white color with details of:– Textures (smooth, rough, scratched,

sandblasted, etc..)– Concavities.– Position and size of applications (toothbrush

head).

Conceptual and ergonomic models requirements• Full-scale (1:1).• Anthropometric dimensions: realistic

dimensions, the right size to grip (handle), proper visual weight (depends on the proposal).

• Conceptual model raw (without finishes) and ergonomic model patching and painted white.

• In ergonomic model you can use standard parts (which already exist) as toothbrush head and other complements.

Homework 1: Research and sketching

• Research about the object, find the information required to generate a concept and start sketching.

• Perform a series of quick sketches (at least 5), serve them to start with the 3D sketching in class.

Surface finishes: State of the paint (not glossy with matte finishes in the same surface, should be uniform); the surface must be smooth and plain, without dots nor scratches; textures must be intentionally handled. Taking care of details.

50%

Processes: All processes such as cutting, drilling, slotting, assembling, gluing, etc.. Symmetry and forms.

40%

Presentation: Present the ergonomic and conceptual models on a base of black cardboard or black foamcore (1/8), printed label neatly trimmed with student's name and tuition, teacher´s name, course name and project name (Conceptual and Ergonomic Models: Toothbrush handle).
