Hot Mess!
Which stories should you tell?It depends on the intent, situation and time that is hand.
Different narratives serve different situations.
• Short stories, metaphors and analogies – short presentations, conversations
• Full stories – speeches and presentations

What are metaphors and analogies?
Metaphors
Use of words or short phrases that already have stories attached to them. Allows you the power of capturing a complete story in a few words
• Example – Shark Tank
Analogy
Longer phrases that paint a picture.
• Examples – she embraced the new process just like a duck takes to water.
How to be diplomatic
using metaphors
• Thank you for sharing your great idea/suggestion with us. Let me do my do-diligence to make sure that this addition will not cause this project to go off schedule or over budget.
• Think of it like adding an extra card to a perfect card pyramid. You’ve got to be careful what to add or take away or it could cause the whole pyramid to fall. I am sure that you would hate for that to happen. Can I get back to you by ____________?

Being diplomatic using analogies
Example:
• Our analysis has shown that this new addition will be like adding one more shrimp to a plate that is overflowing – the plate will eventually break and something is going to hit the floor
• Eliminating this step is like asking for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and they forget to add the jelly – it just will not taste right!

• Pause, breathe and smile before responding – do not give a negative answer immediately even if you know that it would be the correct response
• Don’t take it personal
• Smile and use the diplomacy scripts
• Close mouth and continue to smile and breathe
When scope creep
approaches and you
are about to lose it...

If your project were a car, what type of make and model would it be?
Would it be a new Ferrari, full of gas and energy and raring to go or a 1972 Ford Pinto, coughing and spluttering along the way?
How to create simple metaphors…

Personal life – family, friends, children
Day to day encounters
Work encounters – colleagues, management, staff
Clients/customer testimonials
Second hand encounters - other people’s stories
Books, magazines, internet
Where are the stories? Everywhere!

But I can’t remember my stories…
Keep a journal
Record them –before the end of
that day for accuracy
Keep articles/stories in
a file for easy reference
Choosing the right stories…
• Will you be able to tell the story well?• Does the story resonate with you?• Do you like the story well enough to
learn and tell?• Can you see the characters in your
mind when you read or hear the story?© 2017 Core Performance Concepts Inc.
What does the listener need from the story?• They need to believe the story will
be worth their time and energy
• Each listener needs to believe that the teller likes their own story.
• Don’t memorize and recite the story, paint the picture in the listener’s mind

Concerns?• I am really bad at telling stories!
• Do stories really have that much of an impact on others?
• I am busy enough as it is, I don’t have the time to study and research all of this – it’s overwhelming!
• This seems hard and complicated, where do I start?

communication with
stakeholders (it is what it is) no judgement

develop and apply stories to
your verbal communication
process.
Watch how your influence
in your professional and personal life will slowly transform and change for the
better
