DESCRIPTION

A Game Changer is not defined by geography or ability. It is a kind of missionary. One who embodies the grace, truth and grit of Jesus Christ, whenever, wherever.

God’s spirit ...Two years ago, Cornerstone’s senior leadership team felt God’s Spirit leading us towards a renewed mission and vision... a direction to leverage the unique people, gifts and talents that God has attracted to Cornerstone during its 23 year history.

We began asking ourselves big questions:

• What are the unique needs and opportunities where God has placed us?

• What are the unique resources and capabilities that God brings together in our congregation?

• What particular focus most energizes and animates our leadership?

Common Culture, Vision, passion...During this question process, Pastor Ken was chosen to participate in the prestigious Beeson Doctoral Program through Asbury Seminary. Ken visited thriving churches all over the world, probing for the key ingredients that led to their success. Many of these churches were operating in a “multi-site” capacity, where they had

replicated their unique Spirit DNA to create a new church. Multiple locations with a common culture, vision and common passion. Ken’s studies have culminated in a doctoral dissertation focused on a process for identifying, training and sending lay individuals to become campus pastors in a multi-site strategy.

at the same time...• Cornerstone has continued to

expand its reach globally and locally.

• larger and more frequent domestic and international trips are bringing the love of Christ to the hurting and lost.

• Weekend attendance is 33% greater than three years ago.

• Clearly, the spirit of God is drawing more people to himself through this ministry.

Esther 4:14 “For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time as this?”

MULTI-SITE EXPANSION

alex Fernandez Multi-site Pastor

reaChinG the lostThe essence of our Triune God is mission-sending. The Father saw the struggle within humanity and sent the Son. The Son saw our need for continued spiritual connection and sent the Holy Spirit. As followers of Christ, Cornerstone has embraced this same approach throughout our history by sending scores of short- term mission teams throughout the world, through the continued support of missionaries, and in the support and planting of several other congregations.

WhY multi-site?Today, we are being called to the next phase of sending—one that expands our reach in ways that will increase our faith and open new forms of ministry—through that of reproduction. With an increased awareness of unstable gas prices, shrinking budgets, and a noticeable cultural shift toward people’s desire to remain in their local community, we realize that our current ability to draw people within a thirty-mile radius is not a wise long-term assumption. Therefore, we are planning to send many people from our church into other communities through a multi-site model. This is defined as one unified church meeting in multiple geographical locations.

the numbers • the multi-site movement is one of the fastest growing approaches to ministry with over 5,000 congregations currently worshipping in this type of venue. that number is expected to reach over 30,000 within the next decade

• 90% of multi-sites succeed today as opposed to the 30% success rate of the traditional church planting methods

• over five million people attend a multi-site campus each week in north america

• multi-site churches currently outnumber megachurches (2,000+ attendance)

• two-thirds of multi-sites are denominational

• the average size of a church launching a multi-site ministry is 850

• the average attendance of a campus is 361

our plan

Cornerstone plans to launch its first multi-site campus by fall 2013.

impaCtinG the WorldWe tapped into something during the Hole in Our Gospel message series in April/May of 2012. The people of Cornerstone want to impact the world for Jesus Christ.

There are many good things we can invest in, but Cornerstone believes we are called to invest in reaching people that do not have access to the Good News. Less than one percent of all American Christian giving goes to reach the unreached (defined as minimally exposed to and/or few followers of Christ).

the “Community transformation” model may include:

• Performing a community/people group assessment to determine true needs

• Creating action plans for addressing the identified needs

• Sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ

• Supporting a missionary / pastor who is committed to serving the people group and has a vision to raise up other leaders

Global Funding opportunities may include:

• Working with Bible Translators to complete a translation of the New Testament for a specific people group

• Providing an audio recording of the translated New Testament

• Placing the recording onto “Treasures” (audio Bible units)

• Distributing these Treasures through an appropriate channel (e.g., short-term missions or an existing missionary/pastor)

• Translating the Jesus Film for a specific people group

• Providing clean water sources through ZOE Waters, food, transportation, animal care or anything else that is identified during the initial assessment

• Support for local missionaries and pastors serving a people group

loCal funding opportunities will focus on the economically vulnerable, which may include:

• Partnering with Family Promise of Grand Rapids to refurbish mobile homes and give them to IHN families

• Befriending individuals and families who are going through a tough time through the Congregational Partnership Program

• Starting a matching funds program that would encourage low-income individuals to save their own money, matched by Cornerstone in order for them to purchase a home, car, or educational training

the spirit is leadinGIn the midst of an economic downturn, we felt the Spirit of God lead Cornerstone to construct a new building on 84th Street. Along the way, there were many difficult decisions made related to the size and layout of the building, but at no point did we doubt our direction to build responsibly and not incur an unreasonable amount of debt. God confirmed this approach multiple times throughout the building process.

When we left our former building on 68th Street, average weekend adult attendance was 1230, while kids averaged 230. We now average 1660 adults and 400 kids. Although our new building has over double the square footage of our 68th Street location, we have outgrown our worship center and Kids’ wing during the 11:15 service. We have been challenged to be more creative with how space is utilized in order to

steward what we’ve been given. This led to the addition of the Saturday and Monday night services, and using Base Camp for the Video Café at the 11:15 service.

In the fall of 2013, we are considering adding a Sunday service which would change our service times to 9:00am, 10:30am and 12:00pm. This would require additional parking on the north end of our property to allow for the shorter turnover time between services. We have also discussed the possibility of adding square footage to the Kids wing, creating additional worship space, or adding more classrooms.

Although we will be sending teams out as “pioneers” to launch multi-site campuses, we don’t anticipate any slowdown in our attendance growth.

God is FaithFulThrough the faithful gifts of our people, we have been able to pay off approximately $8 million in debt at our current facility. But our work is not complete. We truly want to eliminate this debt as quickly as possible in order to free-up cash for other Kingdom work.

In November 2012, we began the final financing phase with our bank; a 20-year amortized loan at a favorable interest rate. With proceeds pledged

during Project Game Change, we would like to accelerate our principal payments, making it a 10-year pay-off. This would save Cornerstone over $1 million in interest expense over the life of the loan!
