Producing the Double Page Spread (DPS)

Variant One

Blank Document

• I have made an A3 landscape document because this is the size of the Double Page Spread that I want to make, and is a conventional size of real DPS’ and therefore looks professional. Using a gradient I have applied two tones of pink to the background to create a representation of glamour girl around the pop-rock chick that the DPS is trying to convey.

Letter J

• I have used the text tool do this. I have done it because certain real magazines do this (NME). It will also act as a separator between the two columns of text and therefore makes a neater, more professional and mature layout to my DPS making it more appealing to the audience to read as it will look neater.

Column text

• Using the text tool I have added the DPS text. All articles have text so to make mine look more like a real DPS I have applied it.

• I have also applied my text in columns. All bar one of the magazines I researched into used their text in columns, so having my text in columns makes a more stereotypical, conventional and realistic looking DPS article.

Pull Quote

• I have added a pull-quote between the two columns of text. This is to draw the reader into the article and makes them want to read the article.

• It is also a convention of magazine DPS’s as my research told me so using one on mine makes a more conventional looking DPS.

Abstract

• This is another convention applied through the text tool. I have applied it in a conventional way (big, bold, noticeable, centre aligned, not in columns) as my research suggested they are used to make a more realistic looking DPS.

Photo• I have copied and pasted then placed the main photo in the place the

NME article I researched into did to make a more conventional looking DPS.

• I have blurred out the background even more using the smudge tool and applied a heavy spotlight to her to make a more interesting, appealing photo that puts the attention on her and not the surroundings. I have cropped it into a close-up to put more significance, status and attention on her.

• I have used this photo because it is bright, vibrant which creates a positive mood making the audience want to read the article even more.

Heading

• I have used two fonts on my heading because each segment of it has different connotations (Pretty little has positive happy pretty connotations whilst liar is negative and deceitful) therefore having two different fonts suits this connotation.

• I have slanted it to make it more visually interesting and appealing.

• I have used the text tool to do all of this.

Actual Page

Variant Two

Changes Made

• I have changed it from a pink gradient background to an orange one using the gradient tool. I have done this to see if orange looks any better or works better than pink in this new gradient.

Photo

• The photo has been copied, pasted and placed with the placement tool. I have cropped it to put more significance and status on her. I have applied a spot-light effect for the same reason.

• I have used this photo because it shows her happy and approachable making the audience want to read the DPS.
