English Language Fest

Language can be described as a complex way through which one living being communicates with another. It is not restricted to human beings alone but is also used by animals and appreciated by plants. Broadly , it is a way through which one can emote and express various feelings and thoughts. It can take a variety of forms, words, songs, dances, and art. Keeping in mind, the importance and utility of English language in the modern world, an English Language Fest was celebrated by the students of Delhi Public School, Jodhpur, from August 27, 2012 to August 31, 2012. It was inaugurated by Head of the Department of English, Jai Narain Vyas University, Jodhpur, Professor Dr. Sudhi Rajiv. Prof. Sudhi Rajiv has written many articles in prominent national and international literary journals and presented many papers on various topics, at International and National Conferences and Seminars. She has been conferred with many honours & awards for her immense contribution in the field of literature. She shows a deep interest in dance, drama and debates and is a trainer for UGC workshops on ‘Capacity Building for Women in Higher Education’. After giving the Chief Guest a warm floral welcome, the inauguration ceremony commenced with mesmeriz-ing musical renditions , ‘Shake it out’ and ‘If everyone cared’, leaving the audience with their feet tapping. An informative article, highlighting the various blunders most often made in English language, was beauti-fully presented. The audience was engrossed by the enthralling dance performance, ‘Never say never’. An English play, ‘Do what you love and love what you do’, depicting the importance of reading books and pur-suing our own passion, was wonderfully presented by the students of classes X and XI, left the audience spell-bound. Through this play, the students were made aware about the life and works of various English and Indian authors and poets. The whole auditorium echoed with a huge applause. The Chief Guest Dr. Sudhi Rajiv appreciated the efforts of the students and urged them to take the road less travelled by, to en-ter into the field of art and literature and to read and write more. Emphasizing on the use of language as song, dance and drama, the Chief Guest motivated the students to go miles and miles before discovering the end for themselves. The fest week witnessed the related activities of English as today it is definitely the most powerful world language. 85% of all the knowledge of the world is available in English and that is more than twice that is available in any other language. It is the language of international diplomacy, business and commerce, science and technology, medium of instruction in schools, the language of world travel and much more. English is the primary language that is used by prominent personalities while resolving world issues. It is also the language in which most international business, trade and commercial transactions take place. Legal documents, emails, letters, reports and contracts worldwide are written in English. Not only business but also the world of computers and education is completely dependent on English. All computer software and programmes were initially designed in English and this practice continues. Even in the field of educa-tion, the knowledge of the English language is highly valued. Take the example of India. Most schools have made it the compulsory as the medium of instruction or at least its learning is important as the second language. Countries like China are hiring English speaking teachers so that their students will have a competitive edge in the future when it comes to employability. Other activities that had taken place as a part of English week, were collage making activity based on various human virtues like politeness, patience, optimism and diligence, drop and read, essay writing etc. To culminate the activities of the week an Inter House English Quiz Competition was also held to test the learning of the students in the field of language and literature.
